Abstract:Quasiminimal structures play an important role in non-elementary categoricity. In this paper we explore possibilities of constructing quasiminimal models of a given first-order theory. We present several constructions with increasing control of the properties of the outcome using increasingly stronger assumptions on the theory. We also establish an upper bound on the Hanf number of the existence of arbitrarily large quasiminimal models.

Abstract:Abstract Quasiminimal pregeometry classes were introduced by [6] to isolate the model theoretical core of several interesting examples. He proves that a quasiminimal pregeometry class satisfying an additional axiom, called excellence, is categorical in all uncountable cardinalities. Recently, [2] showed that the excellence axiom follows from the rest of the axioms. In this paper we present a direct proof of the categoricity result without using excellence.

Abstract:We give a new, direct proof of the tetrachotomy classification for the model-checking problem of positive equality-free logic parameterised by the model. The four complexity classes are Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete. The previous proof of this result relied on notions from universal algebra and core-like structures called U-X-cores. This new proof uses only relations, and works for infinite structures also in the distinction between Logspace and NP-hard under Turing reductions. For finite domains, the membership in NP and co-NP follows from a simple argument, which breaks down already over an infinite set with a binary relation. We develop some interesting new algorithms to solve NP and co-NP membership for a variety of infinite structures. We begin with those first-order definable in (Q;=), the so-called equality languages, then move to those first-order definable in (Q;<), the so-called temporal languages. However, it is first-order expansions of the Random Graph (V,E) that provide the most interesting examples. In all of these cases, the derived classification is a tetrachotomy between Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete.

Abstract:We sketch recent interactions between model theory and a roughly 150-year old study of analytic functions involving complex analysis, algebraic topology, and number theory, centered in canonicity of universal covers. Towards this goal we discuss in a systematic and unified way several examples indicating the main ideas of the proofs and the necessary changes in method for different situations: exponential covers, modular and Shimura curves, Shimura and abelian varieties, and coherent families of smooth covers.

Abstract:This paper studies logical aspects of the notion of better quasi order, which has been introduced by C. Nash-Williams (Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society 1965 & 1968). A central tool in the theory of better quasi orders is the minimal bad array lemma. We show that this lemma is exceptionally strong from the viewpoint of reverse mathematics, a framework from mathematical logic. Specifically, it is equivalent to the set existence principle of $\Pi^1_2$-comprehension, over the base theory $\mathsf{ATR_0}$.

Abstract:The first papers on o-minimal structures appeared in the mid 1980s, since then the subject has grown into a wide ranging generalisation of semialgebraic, subanalytic and subpfaffian geometry. In these notes we try to show that this is in fact the case by presenting several examples of o-minimal structures and by listing some geometric properties of sets and maps definable in o-minimal structures. We omit here any reference to the pure model theory of o-minimal structures and to the theory of groups and rings definable in o-minimal structures.

Abstract:Elimination of quantifiers is shown to fail dramatically for a group of well-known mathematical theories (classically enjoying the property) against a wide range of relevant logical backgrounds. Furthermore, it is suggested that only by moving to more extensional underlying logics can we get the property back.

Furthermore, the symmetric difference is shown to be algebraically analogous to the modular difference of two numbers. Abstract:The ZW-calculus is a graphical language capable of representing 2-dimensional quantum systems (qubit) through its diagrams, and manipulating them through its equational theory. We extend the formalism to accommodate finite dimensional Hilbert spaces beyond qubit systems. First we define a qu$d$it version of the language, where all systems have the same arbitrary finite dimension $d$, and show that the provided equational theory is both complete -- i.e. semantical equivalence is entirely captured by the equations -- and minimal -- i.e. none of the equations are consequences of the others. We then extend the graphical language further to allow for mixed-dimensional systems. We again show the completeness and minimality of the provided equational theory.

Abstract:Let $R$ be an o-minimal expansion of a group in a language in which $\textrm{Th}(R)$ eliminates quantifiers, and let $C$ be a predicate for a valuational cut in $R$. We identify a condition that implies quantifier elimination for $\textrm{Th}(R,C)$ in the language of $R$ expanded by $C$ and a small number of constants, and which, in turn, is implied by $\textrm{Th}(R,C)$ having quantifier elimination and being universally axiomatizable. The condition applies for example in the case when $C$ is a convex subring of an o-minimal field $R$ and its residue field is o-minimal.

Abstract:We establish a Quillen equivalence between the Kan-Quillen model structure and a model structure, derived from a cubical model of homotopy type theory, on the category of cartesian cubical sets with one connection. We thereby identify a second model structure which both constructively models homotopy type theory and presents infinity-groupoids, the first example being the equivariant cartesian model of Awodey-Cavallo-Coquand-Riehl-Sattler.

Abstract:We investigate two constructive approaches to defining quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes (qcqs-schemes), namely qcqs-schemes as locally ringed lattices and as functors from rings to sets. We work in Homotopy Type Theory and Univalent Foundations, but reason informally. The main result is a constructive and univalent proof that the two definitions coincide, giving an equivalence between the respective categories of qcqs-schemes.

Abstract:We present a smorgasbord of results on the stabiliser ZX-calculus for odd prime-dimensional qudits (i.e. qupits). We derive a simplified rule set that closely resembles the original rules of qubit ZX-calculus. Using these rules, we demonstrate analogues of the spider-removing local complementation and pivoting rules. This allows for efficient reduction of diagrams to the affine with phases normal form. We also demonstrate a reduction to a unique form, providing an alternative and simpler proof of completeness. Furthermore, we introduce a different reduction to the graph state with local Cliffords normal form, which leads to a novel layered decomposition for qupit Clifford unitaries. Additionally, we propose a new approach to handle scalars formally, closely reflecting their practical usage. Finally, we have implemented many of these findings in DiZX, a new open-source Python library for qudit ZX-diagrammatic reasoning.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to initiate a development of a new non-pointed counterpart of semi-abelian categorical algebra. We are making, however, only the first step in it by giving equivalent definitions of what we call ideally exact categories, and showing that these categories admit a description of quotient objects by means of intrinsically defined ideals, in spite of being non-pointed. As a tool we involve a new notion of essentially nullary monad, and show that Bourn protomodularity condition makes cartesian monads essentially nullary. All semi-abelian categories, all non-trivial Bourn protomodular varieties of universal algebras, and all cotoposes are ideally exact.

Abstract:We introduce a model category of spaces based on the definable sets of an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. As a model category, it resembles the category of topological spaces, but its underlying category is a coherent topos. We will show in future work that its cofibrant objects are precisely the "weak polytopes" of Knebusch.
