Abstract:This is an expository paper aiming to introduce Zilber's Exponential Closedness conjecture to a general audience. Exponential Closedness predicts when (systems of) equations involving addition, multiplication, and exponentiation have solutions in the complex numbers. It is a natural statement at the boundary between complex geometry and algebraic geometry. While it is open in full generality, many special cases and variants have been proven in the last two decades. In the first part of the paper we give a proof of a special case of the conjecture, namely, we show that exponential sums in a single complex variable, such as $e^{\sqrt{2}z}+3i e^{5z}+\pi$, always have infinitely many zeroes. This follows from well-known results in the literature and can actually be proven by standard complex analytic tools. We present a proof, motivated by the ideas of Zilber and Gallinaro, which uses simplified versions of some ingredients of more advanced techniques in the area, thus allowing the reader to explore these advanced proofs on a simple example. Our approach uses only elementary techniques (from standard undergraduate algebra and complex analysis), and the proofs of some of the main ingredients appear to be new. Moreover, these ingredients come from various areas of mathematics, such as functional transcendence and complex geometry, and are a useful way of introducing some classical concepts in these areas to the reader. In the second part we explain the Exponential Closedness conjecture and discuss some known special cases, not least the so-called ``raising to powers'' case (due to Gallinaro) which generalises the above-mentioned result and whose proof uses advanced versions of the tools presented in the first part of the paper.

Abstract:Quasiminimal structures play an important role in non-elementary categoricity. In this paper we explore possibilities of constructing quasiminimal models of a given first-order theory. We present several constructions with increasing control of the properties of the outcome using increasingly stronger assumptions on the theory. We also establish an upper bound on the Hanf number of the existence of arbitrarily large quasiminimal models.

Abstract:We describe an efficient algorithm to calculate generators of power integral bases in composites of totally real fields and imaginary quadratic fields with coprime discriminants. We show that the calculation can be reduced to solving index form equations in the original totally real fields. We illustrate our method by investigating monogenity in the infinite parametric family of imaginary quadratic extensions of the simplest quartic fields.

Abstract:Let A be an idempotent algebra on a finite domain. We combine results of Chen, Zhuk and Carvalho et al. to argue that if A satisfies the polynomially generated powers property (PGP), then QCSP(Inv(A)) is in NP. We then use the result of Zhuk to prove a converse, that if QCSP(Inv(A)) satisfies the exponentially generated powers property (EGP), then QCSP(Inv(A)) is co-NP-hard. Since Zhuk proved that only PGP and EGP are possible, we derive a full dichotomy for the QCSP, justifying the moral correctness of what we term the Chen Conjecture. We examine in closer detail the situation for domains of size three. Over any finite domain, the only type of PGP that can occur is switchability. Switchability was introduced by Chen as a generalisation of the already-known Collapsibility. For three-element domain algebras A that are Switchable, we prove that for every finite subset Delta of Inv(A), Pol(Delta) is Collapsible. The significance of this is that, for QCSP on finite structures (over three-element domain), all QCSP tractability explained by Switchability is already explained by Collapsibility. Finally, we present a three-element domain complexity classification vignette, using known as well as derived results.

Elliptic units for complex cubic fields

Abstract:We propose a conjecture extending the classical construction of elliptic units to complex cubic number fields $K$. The conjecture concerns special values of the elliptic gamma function, a holomorphic function of three complex variables arising in mathematical physics whose transformation properties under $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbf{Z})$ were studied by Felder and Varchenko in the early 2000s. Using this function we construct complex numbers that we conjecture to be units in narrow ray class fields of $K$. We also propose a reciprocity law for the action of the Galois group on these units in the style of Shimura. To support our conjecture we offer numerical evidence and also prove a new type of Kronecker limit formula relating the logarithm of the modulus of these complex numbers to the derivatives at $s = 0$ of partial zeta functions of $K$. Our constructions unveil the role played by the elliptic gamma function in Hilbert's twelfth problem for complex cubic fields.

On the Complexity of Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:We initiate a study of the complexity of quantum field theories (QFTs) by proposing a measure of information contained in a QFT and its observables. We show that from minimal assertions, one is naturally led to measure complexity by two integers, called format and degree, which characterize the information content of the functions and domains required to specify a theory or an observable. The strength of this proposal is that it applies to any physical quantity, and can therefore be used for analyzing complexities within an individual QFT, as well as studying the entire space of QFTs. We discuss the physical interpretation of our approach in the context of perturbation theory, symmetries, and the renormalization group. Key applications include the detection of complexity reductions in observables, for example due to algebraic relations, and understanding the emergence of simplicity when considering limits. The mathematical foundations of our constructions lie in the framework of sharp o-minimality, which ensures that the proposed complexity measure exhibits general properties inferred from consistency and universality.

On the monogenity of totally complex pure octic fields

Abstract:Let $0,1\ne m\in Z$ and $\alpha=\sqrt[8]{m}$. According to the results of I. Gaál and L. El Fadil, $\alpha$ generates a power integral basis in $K=Q(\alpha)$, if and only if $m$ is square-free and $m\not\equiv 1\;(\bmod\; 4)$. In the present paper we consider totally complex pure octic fields, that is the case $m<0$, with $m$ satisfiying the above property. In this case $(1,\alpha,\alpha^2,\ldots,\alpha^7)$ is an integral basis. Our purpose is to investigate whether $K$ admits any other generators of power integral bases, inequivalent to $\alpha$. We present an efficient method to calculate generators of power integral bases in this type of fields with coefficients $<10^{200}$ in the above integral basis. We report on the results of our calculation for this type of fields with $0>m>-5000$, which yields 2024 fields.

Existence of minimal models for threefold generalized pairs in positive characteristic

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>5$. We show the existence of minimal models for pseudo-effective NQC klt generalized pairs in dimension three over $\mathbb{K}$. As a consequence, we prove the termination of flips for pseudo-effective threefold NQC klt generalized pairs over $\mathbb{K}$. This provides a new proof on the termination of flips for pseudo-effective pairs over $\mathbb{K}$ without using the non-vanishing theorems. A key ingredient of our proof is the ACC for lc thresholds in dimension $\leq 3$ and the global ACC in dimension $\leq 2$ for generalized pairs over $\mathbb{K}$.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the power quandle of a group, an algebraic structure that forgets the multiplication but keeps the conjugation and the power maps. Compared with plain quandles, power quandles are much better invariants of groups. We show that they determine the central quotient of any group and the center of any finite group. Any group can be canonically approximated by the associated group of its power quandle, which we show to be a central extension, with a universal property, and a computable kernel. This allows us to present any group as a quotient of a group with a power-conjugation presentation by an abelian subgroup that is determined by the power quandle and low-dimensional homological invariants.

C-minimal fields have the exchange property

Abstract:We show that C-minimal fields (i.e., C-minimal expansions of ACVF) have the exchange property, answering a question of Haskell and Macpherson. Additionally, we strengthen some theorems of Cubides Kovacsics and Delon on C-minimal fields. First, we show that definably complete C-minimal fields of characteristic 0 have generic differentiability. Second, we show that if the induced structure on the residue field is a pure ACF, then polynomial boundedness holds. In fact, polynomial boundedness can only fail if there are unexpected definable automorphisms of the multiplicative group of the residue field.

Abstract:Concerning quartics, two particular quantifier elimination (QE) problems of historical interests and practical values are studied. We solve the problems by the theory of complete discrimination systems and negative root discriminant sequences for polynomials that provide a method for real (positive/negative) and complex root classification for polynomials. The equivalent quantifier-free formulas are obtained mainly be hand and are simpler than those obtained automatically by previous methods or QE tools. Also, applications of the results to program verification and determination of positivity of symmetric polynomials are showed.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.

Power-bounded quaternionic operators

Abstract:Recently, the conception of slice regular functions was allowed to introduce a new quaternionic functional calculus, among which the theory of semigroups of linear operators was developed into the quaternionic setting, even in a more general case of real alternative $*$-algebras. In this paper, we initiate to study the discrete case and introduce the notion of power-bounded quaternionic operators. In particular, by the spherical Yosida approximation, we establish a discrete Hille-Yosida-Phillips theorem to give an equivalent characterization of quaternionic linear operators being power-bounded. A sufficient condition of the power-boundedness for quaternionic linear operators is also given. In addition, a non-commutative version of the Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem (J. Funct. Anal. 68: 313-328, 1986) for power-bounded quaternionic operators is formulated in terms of the $S$-spectrum.

Abstract:We prove an elimination of imaginaires results for (almost all) henselian valued fields of equicharacteristic zero. To do so, we consider a mix of sorts introduced in earlier works of the two authors and define a generalized version of the k-linear imaginaries. For a large class of value groups containing all subgroups of (\mathbb{R}^n) for some (n), we prove that the imaginaries of such a valued field can be elimininated in the field, the k-linear imaginaries and the imaginaries of the value group.

Abstract:Unit group computations are a cryptographic primitive for which one has a fast quantum algorithm, but the required number of qubits is $\tilde O(m^5)$. In this work we propose a modification of the algorithm for which the number of qubits is $\tilde O(m^2)$ in the case of cyclotomic fields. Moreover, under a recent conjecture on the size of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_m + \zeta_m^{-1})$, the quantum algorithms is much simpler because it is a hidden subgroup problem (HSP) algorithm rather than its error estimation counterpart: continuous hidden subgroup problem (CHSP). We also discuss the (minor) speed-up obtained when exploiting Galois automorphisms thanks to the Buchmann-Pohst algorithm over $\mathcal{O}_K$-lattices.
