Abstract:We introduce a model category of spaces based on the definable sets of an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. As a model category, it resembles the category of topological spaces, but its underlying category is a coherent topos. We will show in future work that its cofibrant objects are precisely the "weak polytopes" of Knebusch.

Abstract:The first papers on o-minimal structures appeared in the mid 1980s, since then the subject has grown into a wide ranging generalisation of semialgebraic, subanalytic and subpfaffian geometry. In these notes we try to show that this is in fact the case by presenting several examples of o-minimal structures and by listing some geometric properties of sets and maps definable in o-minimal structures. We omit here any reference to the pure model theory of o-minimal structures and to the theory of groups and rings definable in o-minimal structures.

Abstract:Quasiminimal structures play an important role in non-elementary categoricity. In this paper we explore possibilities of constructing quasiminimal models of a given first-order theory. We present several constructions with increasing control of the properties of the outcome using increasingly stronger assumptions on the theory. We also establish an upper bound on the Hanf number of the existence of arbitrarily large quasiminimal models.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain several model structures on {\bf DblCat}, the category of small double categories. Our model structures have three sources. We first transfer across a categorification-nerve adjunction. Secondly, we view double categories as internal categories in {\bf Cat} and take as our weak equivalences various internal equivalences defined via Grothendieck topologies. Thirdly, {\bf DblCat} inherits a model structure as a category of algebras over a 2-monad. Some of these model structures coincide and the different points of view give us further results about cofibrant replacements and cofibrant objects. As part of this program we give explicit descriptions and discuss properties of free double categories, quotient double categories, colimits of double categories, several nerves, and horizontal categorification.

Abstract:Inspired by recent work on the categorical semantics of dependent type theories, we investigate the following question: When is logical structure (crucially, dependent-product and subobject-classifier structure) induced from a category to categories of diagrams in it? Our work offers several answers, providing a variety of conditions on both the category itself and the indexing category of diagrams. Additionally, motivated by homotopical considerations, we investigate the case when the indexing category is equipped with a class of weak equivalences and study conditions under which the localization map induces a structure-preserving functor between presheaf categories.

Abstract:Models of dependent type theories are contextual categories with some additional structure. We prove that if a theory $T$ has enough structure, then the category $T\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}$ of its models carries the structure of a model category. We also show that if $T$ has $\Sigma$ types, then weak equivalences can be characterized in terms of homotopy categories of models.

Abstract:In this paper we study categories O over quantizations of symplectic resolutions admitting Hamiltonian tori actions with finitely many fixed points. In this generality, these categories were introduced by Braden, Licata, Proudfoot and Webster. We establish a family of standardly stratified structures (in the sense of the author and Webster) on these categories O. We use these structures to study shuffling functors of Braden, Licata, Proudfoot and Webster (called cross-walling functors in this paper). Most importantly, we prove that all cross-walling functors are derived equivalences that define an action of the Deligne groupoid of a suitable real hyperplane arrangement.

Abstract:After explaining the importance of model categories in abstract homotopy theory, we provide concrete examples demonstrating that various categories of manifolds do not have all finite colimits, and hence cannot be model categories. We then consider various enlargements of our categories of manifolds, culminating in categories of presheaves. We explain how to produce model structures on these enlarged categories, culminating with answering an open problem involving Poincaré spaces.

Abstract:We define model structures on exact categories which we call exact model structures. We look at the relationship between these model structures and cotorsion pairs on the exact category. In particular, when the underlying category is weakly idempotent complete we get Hovey's one-to-one correspondence between model structures and complete cotorsion pairs. We classify the right and left homotopy relation in terms of the cotorsion pairs and look at examples of exact model structures. In particular, we see that given any hereditary abelian model category, the full subcategories of cofibrant, fibrant and cofibrant-fibrant subobjects each have natural exact model structures equivalent to the original model structure. These model structures each have interesting characteristics. For example, the cofibrant-fibrant subobjects form a Frobenius category whose stable category is the same thing as the homotopy category of its model structure.

Abstract:A model structure on a category is a formal way of introducing a homotopy theory on that category, and if the model structure is abelian and hereditary, its homotopy category is known to be triangulated. So a good way to both build and model a triangulated category is to build a hereditary abelian model structure. Given a ring $R$ and a (non necessarily semidualizing) left $R$-module $C$, we introduce and study new concepts of relative Gorenstein cotorsion and cotorsion modules: $\rm G_C$-cotorsion and (strongly) $\mathcal{C}_C$-cotorsion. As an application, we prove that there is a unique hereditary abelian model structure on the category of left $R$-modules, in which the cofibrations are the monomorphisms with $\rm G_C$-flat cokernel and the fibrations are the epimorphisms with $\mathcal{C}_C$-cotorsion kernel belonging to the Bass class $\mathcal{B}_C(R)$. In the second part, when $C$ is a semidualizing $(R,S)$-bimodule, we investigate the existence of abelian model structures on the category of left (resp., right) $R$-modules where the cofibrations are the epimorphisms (resp., monomorphisms) with kernel (resp., cokernel) belonging to the Bass (resp., Auslander) class $\mathcal{B}_C(R)$ (resp., $\mathcal{A}_C(R)$). We also study the class of $\rm G_C$-flat modules and the Bass class from the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory point of view. We show that they are part of weak AB-contexts. As the concept of weak AB-context can be dualized, we also give dual results that involve the class of $\rm G_C$-cotorsion modules and the Auslander class.

Abstract:We study the behavior of the abstract sectional category in the Quillen, the Strom and the Mixed proper model structures on topological spaces and prove that, under certain reasonable conditions, all of them coincide with the classical notion. As a result, the same conclusions hold for the abstract Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and the abstract topological complexity of a space.

Abstract:When a category is equipped with a 2-cell structure it becomes a sesquicategory but not necessarily a 2-category. It is widely accepted that the latter property is equivalent to the middle interchange law. However, little attention has been given to the study of the category of all 2-cell structures (seen as sesquicategories with a fixed underlying base category) other than as a generalization for 2-categories. The purpose of this work is to highlight the significance of such a study, which can prove valuable in identifying intrinsic features pertaining to the base category. These ideas are expanded upon through the guiding example of the category of monoids. Specifically, when a monoid is viewed as a one-object category, its 2-cell structures resemble semibimodules.

Abstract:Motivated by team semantics and existential second-order logic, we develop a model-theoretic framework for studying second-order objects such as sets and relations. We introduce a notion of abstract elementary team categories that generalizes the standard notion of abstract elementary class, and show that it is an example of an accessible category. We apply our framework to show that the logic $\mathsf{FOT}$ introduced by Kontinen and Yang satisfies a version of Lindström's Theorem. Finally, we consider the problem of transferring categoricity between different cardinalities for complete theories in existential second-order logic (or independence logic) and prove both a downwards and an upwards categoricity transfer result.

Abstract:We prove that categories enriched in the Thomason model structure admit a model structure that is Quillen equivalent to the Bergner model structure on simplicial categories, providing a new model for (infinity,1)-categories. Along the way, we construct model structures on modules and monoids in the Thomason model structure and prove that any model structure on the category of small categories that has the same weak equivalences as the Thomason model structure is not a cartesian model structure.

Abstract:In this article, we extend results of J. Leray and B. Vallette on homotopical properties of pre-Calabi-Yau algebras to the case of pre-Calabi-Yau categories. We give direct proofs of the results adapting techniques used by D. Petersen for the case of coalgebras, instead of using properadic calculus. More precisely, we prove that given quasi-isomorphic dg quivers and a pre-Calabi-Yau structure on one of them there exists a pre-Calabi-Yau structure on the other as well as a pre-Calabi-Yau morphism between the two. Moreover, we show that a pre-Calabi-Yau morphism whose first component is an isomorphism of dg quivers is an isomorphism in the category of pre-Calabi-Yau categories. We incidentally show that any pre-Calabi-Yau category has a minimal model. Finally, we prove that any quasi-isomorphism of pre-Calabi-Yau categories admits a quasi-inverse.

Abstract:Führmann introduced Abstract Kleisli structures to model call-by-value programming languages with side effects, and showed that they correspond to monads satisfying a certain equalising condition on the unit. We first extend this theory to non-strict morphisms of monads, and to incorporate $2$-cells of monads. We then further extend this to a theory of abstract Kleisli structures on $2$-categories, characterising when the original pseudomonad can be recovered by the abstract Kleisli structure on its $2$-category of free-pseudoalgebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an overview of some recent work on applying tools from category theory in finite model theory, descriptive complexity, constraint satisfaction, and combinatorics. The motivations for this work come from Computer Science, but there may also be something of interest for model theorists and other logicians. The basic setting involves studying the category of relational structures via a resource-indexed family of adjunctions with some process category - which unfolds relational structures into treelike forms, allowing natural resource parameters to be assigned to these unfoldings. One basic instance of this scheme allows us to recover, in a purely structural, syntax-free way: the Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse~game; the quantifier rank fragments of first-order logic; the equivalences on structures induced by (i) the quantifier rank fragments, (ii) the restriction of this fragment to the existential positive part, and (iii) the extension with counting quantifiers; and the combinatorial parameter of tree-depth (Nesetril and Ossona de Mendez). Another instance recovers the k-pebble game, the finite-variable fragments, the corresponding equivalences, and the combinatorial parameter of treewidth. Other instances cover modal, guarded and hybrid fragments, generalized quantifiers, and a wide range of combinatorial parameters. This whole scheme has been axiomatized in a very general setting, of arboreal categories and arboreal covers. Beyond this basic level, a landscape is beginning to emerge, in which structural features of the resource categories, adjunctions and comonads are reflected in degrees of logical and computational tractability of the corresponding languages. Examples include semantic characterisation and preservation theorems, and Lovasz-type results on counting homomorphisms.
