Abstract:ABSTRACT Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is a darkly ingenious bestseller. The eponymous hero of the book, in his very name, indexes not only the pursuit of profit (”Kreutzer”), but also hegemonic cultural pretensions (“cross”), and oppressive claims to power (“cruiser”). The three volumes of the novel clandestinely promote European colonialism, Christian ascendancy, and white supremacy. Their message, a cover for slavery and genocide under the veil of a supposed civilizing mission, has the result of calling for a new Holy War (“crusade”). Against this backdrop, the political economy of the “Robinsonade” turns out to be anything but the solitary business of a stranded castaway. Instead, it manifests as the exploratory and exploitative world tour of an imperial strategist. Authenticated by the encrypted scheme in the naming of its hero, the “Robinsonade” is also the foundation of a “Crus(oe)-ade”, a prelude to colonization as well as global dominance.

Abstract:This paper offers a postcolonial-oriental reading of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. The study employs the postcolonial theory, principally, Edward Said’s orientalism and his concept of contrapuntal reading, which investigates the contextual circumstances of a text’s production. Such a reading demonstrates that, in plot, setting, thematic content and characterization, Robinson Crusoe is a prototypical colonial narrative, shaped by colonial discourse and reflects the dominant imperialist ideologies of its time concerning race, identity and otherness. British colonialism informs nearly every feature of Robinson Crusoe, and, in its orientalist rhetoric, the novel clearly reproduces the imperialistic ideology of its time. Friday’s existence in the text generates oriental ‘othering’ (which establishes his identity as the colonized) and serves both as a reminder of the colonial expansion of the British Empire and of the era’s dominant, imperialistic discourse and perceived superiority of Englishness. Imperialism started to influence English national identity as colonizer as early as the eighteenth centuries with the English thinking more highly of themselves on account of their contact with colonized peoples, as epitomized in the character and personality of Defoe’s protagonist, Robinson Crusoe. As narrator, Crusoe’s attitude towards non-Europeans and his use of racial slurs are clearly in line with the era’s orientalist rhetoric, which traditionally attributed traits outside British ideal values and accepted norms to the colonized or Eastern other.

It argues that this episode not only plays a pivotal role in the novel’s plot, as it ends up in disaster and Crusoe’s shipwreck, but also has historical significance once it offers a glimpse of the transnational and transcontinental nature of the slave trade in the South Atlantic, involving Portugal, England and Brazil.

It provides a comprehensive analysis of how material goods are depicted, their significance, and their impact on characters and their environment. The study explores the influence of material wealth on identity formation, examining Crusoe’s transformation through his accumulation of goods and the construction of his fortification as a manifestation of materialism and power. Additionally, it investigates the paradoxical relationship between materialism and isolation, considering how Crusoe’s material possessions offer both comfort and contribute to his sense of seclusion. The character of Friday is analyzed to critique materialism, highlighting the contrasts between Crusoe’s European materialism and Friday’s indigenous perspective. The paper also explores the link between materialism and colonialism, demonstrating how Crusoe’s actions reflect broader colonial attitudes and power dynamics. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research integrates close textual analysis with insights from prominent literary critics. Abstract:Charting an anti-colonial or even postcolonial current, this article recovers ironic and satirical meanings in Robinson Crusoe . After he leaves the island, Crusoe trades isolation for commercial opportunities in Asia. Alongside other books plundered by Defoe, Dampier's Voyages is comparable because the pirate-navigator-cartographer is one among many models. As Defoe was negotiating the politics of the English Royal Court at the time of the wars of the Spanish succession, the Farther Adventures (book two) involves Crusoe in a transformative crisis. Reading Defoe and Dampier together supports an argument about postcoloniality, understood in Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's ironic and restricted sense of a critical broadside against the decolonial hoax that smuggles in neocolonial ideologies. In parallel with Dampier, Crusoe ends up hauling opium from Bengal and running from the East India Company in Cochinchina (present-day Vietnam), as Defoe launches a Lockean critique of violence, and profit remains the currency of the realm.

Abstract:Defoe's handling of space and land is crucial to his travel narratives, especially the Tour and Robinson Crusoe. Robinson turns the land of his uncharted island into an object that he can control, enclose and develop. Nature, initially associated to a hostile force epitomized in the storm that led him to this island, becomes a source of possibilities that Robinson discovers as he restructures and mentally maps that natural space to make it his own place or dwelling. In the Tour, Defoe narrates the English space through verbal cartography, chorography and fiction, analysing the big picture and the small picture (by varying scales), the ways in which human nature inscribes itself in non-human nature, the relationship between the local and the global, between the country and the city. It is through his geographical and environmental imagination that Defoe manages to give the most graphic contemporary account of the state of Great-Britain in the first part of the eighteenth century. Both texts show a process of appropriation of space and nature by the traveller in order to promote it economically and geopolitically. It is this interaction between the traveller and the environment around him that this ecocritical reading of Defoe wants to analyse.

By thoroughly examining the novel's portrayal of material possessions, their significance, and their impact on the characters and their environment, this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the materialist themes embedded within the narrative.The research objectives include analyzing the role of material wealth in establishing identity, exploring the symbolism of Crusoe's fortification as a manifestation of materialism and power dynamics, investigating the paradoxical relationship between materialism and isolation, examining the transformation of the character Friday and its critique of materialism, and exploring the connection between materialism and colonialism within the novel.To achieve these objectives, the study employs a combination of close textual analysis and engaging with relevant critical perspectives. The analysis is supported by direct quotes from the novel, with proper references including the author's name and page numbers. Additionally, insights from prominent literary critics are incorporated, further enriching the exploration of materialist themes in Robinson Crusoe.The findings of this research shed light on the multifaceted nature of materialism within the novel. Abstract:Religion has a reproductive power, and the effect of its ideas should be dealt with in areas unrelated to its divine principles. Being shipwrecked and due to the feelings of loneliness, Robison Crusoe's relationship with God and religion became very strong. Christian belief became the center of life on that deserted island. Therefore, everything that occurs has a connection with Christianity. Consequently, this paper sets itself the task of investigating the religious atmosphere and the main pillar's that make up the religious background underlying Daniel Defoe's novel 'Robinson Crusoe'. Accordingly, the present paper opens by highlighting certain points in the political and religious situation during Daniel Defoe's life. After that, the paper endeavors to discuss what is meant by religion and whether it is a vague or clear concept. Then, the paper expounds the innate linkage between the above mentioned novel and Max Weber's monograph that uncovers the critical relation between the Protestant religion and the enterprise of Capitalism. Next, the paper moves to illustrate the utilization of certain religious ideas in the novel such as sin and punishment. Then, an attempt is made to explain what Defoe wants to show by portraying Crusoe as a religious teacher teaching Friday about Christianity. Finally, an effort is made to present certain religious Opinions on authority expressed in this novel

Abstract:Robinson Crusoe is more than a myth of modern individualism as labeled by Ian Watt, it is an embodiment of Enlightenment ideology. Since this modern myth first arrived in China via Japan at the turn of the 20th century, it was intentionally appropriated. This paper proposes the use of the concept of trans-vision to examine the first published Chinese translation of Robinson Crusoe, Juedao Piaoliu Ji, to reflect on its migration into China and on how, in an attempt to continue the Chinese tradition of wenren (literati), translated discourses are expected to contribute to the renewal and transformation of society in a painful period of transition.

Abstract:In his bookThe Experience of the Foreign: Culture and Translation in Romantic Germanythat focuses on the German culturalprocess before and after the nineteenth century, Antoine Berman carries out a historical “archaeology” on the origins, developments and tendencies of German translation activities and theories since Luther. His analyses and conclusive statements on some fundamental issues in translation eventually lead to his definition of translation as “the experience of the foreign”. This paper, starting from the implicit logic of Berman’s translation thoughts, attempts to clarify certain misunderstandings related to the interpretation and understanding of Berman’s theories that still exist in the current academic translation circle in the perspective of text analysis and “interpretants”.

Abstract:This study aims to find out the leadership style and individual development of Robinson Crusoe in Daniel Defoe's novel, this research is expected to be a reference for further researchers. The data source used in this research is Robinson Crusoe's Novel. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive research method. The data were obtained by using reading, note-taking, and analyzing techniques through a sociological approach to literary works and to classify the leadership styles contained in the novel, the researcher used the theory of John Adair and McClelland. The results of the research show that the leadership of Robinson Crusoe could make and execute strategies and vision well, found ideas to find plans, and created and implement Robinson Crusoe's self-development to be felt and improved. Researchers could conclude that Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe explored how humans change from helpless creatures to leaders. The visionary leadership, it could be concluded that Robinson Crusoe was able to adapt himself as a leader who was responsible for the decisions he would carry out and Robinson Crusoe was learned to lead himself.

Abstract:Following Ian Watt ' s canonical analysis of Robinson Crusoe ' s economic individualism in The Rise of the Novel,sociological and economic interpretation of the novel has figured prominently in the criticism of Robinson Crusoe.However,some scholars hold that Crusoe ' s Protestantism,instead of his economic individualism,is the dominant force in his life.The present study argues that it is not enough to consider only the relationship between economic individualism and religious forces.Individualism gained its prominence and importance at the expense of some traditional domestic relations.In this light,it is both appropriate and necessary to consider the issue of marginalizing family in the discussion of the individualism in Robinson Crusoe.

Abstract:Robinson Crusoe is among the world's most mythologized fictional characters. As homo economicus , economic man, Crusoe is a byword for rugged individualism. Crusoe has been linked to the emergent bourgeois individual, and this role offers a way to reconsider, after 300 years of circulation, an alternate economic reading of the character. This article rereads Crusoe's role in Marx's theory of commodity fetishism, prompted by an art installation, REFUGIO – after Selkirk, after Crusoe by Roger Palmer, which explores a visually doubled figure of Crusoe relocated to the Pacific Ocean. This trope of doubling is reinterpreted with Marx's concept of "economic character masks" and J.M. Coetzee's postcolonial re-imagining of the Crusoe story, Foe , showing that Crusoe's economic character mask continues to operate in the capitalist world while his body is absent. Homo economicus is a fiction that obscures the capitalist individual's imbrication with globalizing networks of exchange, accumulation, and exploitation.
