Individualism,Religion and Marginalization of Family: A Reinterpretation of Robinson Crusoe

Abstract:Following Ian Watt ' s canonical analysis of Robinson Crusoe ' s economic individualism in The Rise of the Novel,sociological and economic interpretation of the novel has figured prominently in the criticism of Robinson Crusoe.However,some scholars hold that Crusoe ' s Protestantism,instead of his economic individualism,is the dominant force in his life.The present study argues that it is not enough to consider only the relationship between economic individualism and religious forces.Individualism gained its prominence and importance at the expense of some traditional domestic relations.In this light,it is both appropriate and necessary to consider the issue of marginalizing family in the discussion of the individualism in Robinson Crusoe.
