Abstract:Numerous genetic studies have contributed to reconstructing the human history of the Canary Islands population. The recent use of new ancient DNA targeted enrichment and next-generation sequencing techniques on new Canary Islands samples have greatly improved these molecular results. However, the bulk of the available data is still provided by the classic mitochondrial DNA phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies carried out on the indigenous, historical, and extant human populations of the Canary Islands. In the present study, making use of all the accumulated mitochondrial information, the existence of DNA contamination and archaeological sample misidentification in those samples is evidenced. Following a thorough review of these cases, the new phylogeographic analysis revealed the existence of a heterogeneous indigenous Canarian population, asymmetrically distributed across the various islands, which most likely descended from a unique mainland settlement. These new results and new proposed coalescent ages are compatible with a Roman-mediated arrival driven by the exploitation of the purple dye manufacture in the Canary Islands.

Abstract:One Hundred Years of Solitude, within the perimeter of magically real fiction, raises certain questions which are more historiographical than fictional, suggesting a strong fluidity in the terms like colony, state etc., more so, in the traditionally compartmentalized spaces: colonial, postcolonial and neocolonial with the result of dangerous floor-crossings of history. This paper will examine how the first settler Jose Arcadio Buendia, at the end of a typical diaspora, goes for founding Macondo, a prototype colony, and continues ruling it until the so far non-existent state intervenes to extend its territorial grip and unilateral power over Macondo through its civil and military outposts in the modus operandi a colonial center usually employs against its extended territory. The paper will further examine how the same state, presumably postcolonial, eventually turns into a de facto colony of a neocolonial center, thus thoroughly dismantling the fine myth of decolonization with the colonial question still unanswered and unburdened of.

Abstract:A combination of historical and archaeological data helps reexamine the material worlds of the Spanish colonizers in Mexico City during the sixteenth century. The historical data consist of the probate inventories of 39 Spanish colonizers, and they reveal information on the wealth of the colonizers and their personal belongings. Of the different kinds of material culture in the probate inventories, I focus only on cloth, clothing, and slaves, as well as on the wealth of colonizers. The archaeological data were obtained by the Programa de Arqueología Urbana in the historic center of Mexico City, and they consist of houses of Spanish colonizers. These data allow us to examine two daily necessities of colonizers: food (including plants and animals) and ceramic pottery. Bringing together these two lines of data reveals the patterns of consumption of colonizers in New Spain and helps us identify different strategies that guided these patterns, including reproducing an acceptable material world modeled after life in Spain, competing in the local social hierarchy, forging relationships with local indigenous people, controlling labor and production, and domesticating a foreign world to meet the expectations of the conquest.

In this epic novel, there are three kinds of states of people: love, death, solitude. Discussing preliminarily in the themes, the article shows the relationships between each two as well as the reflection on the Latin American's history. And as the writer said, the contrary of solitude is unity, that is to love each other. Only so, can we make more progress.

Abstract:In an eastern-Pacific coral assemblage at Devil’s Crown, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, two coral species, Psammocora stellata and Cycloseris (Diaseris) distorta, form dense populations of unattached colonies on sand and rubble substrata. In the Galápagos, living C. (D.) distorta is found only at this single site, whereas populations of P. stellata are found throughout the Archipelago. Six cores dating to ~ 7700 yBP showed P. stellata to be dominant throughout the history of this isolated community, but C. (D.) distorta increased in abundance from ~ 2200 yBP and reached peak abundance between 1471 yBP and the present. The relative frequency of the two coral species may be linked to millennial-scale climatic variability, and this site may represent a refuge for C. (D.) distorta from unfavorable climatic fluctuations on millennial timescales. Our results demonstrate that some corals can persist in isolated populations for millennia.

Abstract:From a comparative approach, we propose in this communication an Archaeology of some of the agrarian colonies implanted in the northwest of the Iberian peninsula: Lamas (Paredes de Coura), the colonization project of the wastelands of Montalegre and Boticas (Barroso) and the Plan de Colónización de la Tierra Llana (Lugo, Galicia). Despite being an area that shares common characteristics (same climate, small landowners, marginality), the solutions adopted have generated different materialities. From the Archaeology of the Recent Past, recently developed in Portugal, we raised theoretical and methodological questions for the study of this type of contemporary domestic space. Abstract:The future biosphere on Earth (as with its past) will be made up predominantly of unicellular microorganisms. Unicellular life was probably present for at least 2.5 Gyr before multicellular life appeared and will likely be the only form of life capable of surviving on the planet in the far future, when the ageing Sun causes environmental conditions to become more hostile to more complex forms of life. Therefore, it is statistically more likely that habitable Earth-like exoplanets we discover will be at a stage in their habitable lifetime more conducive to supporting unicellular, rather than multicellular life. The end stage of habitability on Earth is the focus of this work. A simple, latitude-based climate model incorporating eccentricity and obliquity variations is used as a guide to the temperature evolution of the Earth over the next 3 Gyr. This allows inferences to be made about potential refuges for life, particularly in mountains and cold-trap (ice) caves and what forms of life could live in these environments. Results suggest that in high latitude regions, unicellular life could persist for up to 2.8 Gyr from present. This begins to answer the question of how the habitability of Earth will evolve at local scales alongside the Sun's main sequence evolution and, by extension, how the habitability of Earth-like planets would evolve over time with their own host stars.

Abstract:This article examines the notions of dark ecology, the Capitalocene, and hyperobjects to delve into a re-reading of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera that interrogates how those literary works provide valuable ecological awareness for the present era. Additionally, the article explores how Gabo’s works present a global ecological vision that enables the reader to observe a destroyed imaginary world where humanity dies after an ecocatastrophe produced by excessive human interference in the natural world. The novels analyzed are not narratives of an idealized primordial past or a catharsis that immerses us in the natural world to clean our minds from guilty environmental reality; instead, the narratives portray tenets of dark ecology, which attempt to provide a vivid portrayal of an environmental dilemma. The novels can be read through the lens of dark ecology as evidencing closeness to the earth; in them the omnipresent theme of solitude enables the reader to be in tune with nature more than as a mere presentation of an idealized interconnection with the environment. Before delving into the analysis of the novels, the essay provides a review of recent criticism and a brief examination of new developments in ecocritical theory.

Abstract:It is clear from the outset that Out of Darkness is no ordinary survivalist thriller. It transcends the genre, leaning heavily on Platonic philosophy while criticizing self-serving narratives of settler colonialism and organized religion (at times more subtly than others — two of the leads are Adem and Eva, with Adem declaring early on that "I am the light"). The filmmakers also collaborated closely with an archaeologist (R. Dinnis, University of Aberdeen) and a linguist (D. Andersson, Umeå University). The intent was to enhance the authenticity of their film, but they achieved something altogether fresh and original at the same time: a horror film that entertains and educates simultaneously. Exemplifying this commitment is the bold decision to script the dialogue in 'Tola', a language that was invented for the film. Tola combines Arabic with Basque (Euskera), and draws on research that recognizes Euskera as the oldest living European language. A language isolate, Euskera has been spoken for at least 12,000 years 1 , which long pre-dates the origin of Indo-European languages about 8,100 years ago 2 . Its distinctiveness — even when combined with the familiar rhythms of modern Arabic — gives Tola a grammar and phonology that will be unfamiliar to most viewers.

Abstract:Japanese British author Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant tells the story of an elderly British couple’s journey of finding their son and reminiscing. He writes the unfinished story between the Britons and Saxons in the post-Arthur era in a fantastical way, focusing on the grand propositions of history, memory and human survival. This article innovatively applies the Assmann couple’s cultural memory theory to analyze the memory writing in The Buried Giant from the dimensions of media, power, and function of cultural memory. The warren, monastery and giant’s cairn in the text are not only the carriers of individual, national and state memories, but also the necessary conditions for the buried stored memories to be awakened under the fog of amnesia. And the Nordic myths, as the cohesive structure in their cultural memory, play a crucial role in reconstructing their own cultural identity. As a result of which, this paper first analyzes the positive role that cultural memory plays in reconstructing identity and healing trauma for individuals, collectives, and nations under the shadow of the Holocaust. Secondly, it explores the writer’s intention to contemplate the survival status of all humanity, comprehend the meaning of life, and call for peace in the context of globalization. Thirdly, it reveals the theme of “facing historical trauma, rejecting negative forgetting, inheriting cultural memory, achieving identity reconstruction, and pursuing harmonious coexistence”.

Abstract:The Iberian Peninsula is a key region for unraveling human settlement histories of Eurasia during the period spanning the decline of Neandertals and the emergence of anatomically modern humans (AMH). There is no evidence of human occupation in central Iberia after the disappearance of Neandertals ~42,000 years ago until approximately 26,000 years ago, rendering the region "nobody's land" during the Aurignacian period. The Abrigo de la Malia provides irrefutable evidence of human settlements dating back to 36,200 to 31,760 calibrated years before the present (cal B.P.) This site also records additional levels of occupation around 32,420 to 26,260 cal B.P., suggesting repeated settlement of this territory. Our multiproxy examination identifies a change in climate trending toward colder and more arid conditions. However, this climatic deterioration does not appear to have affected AMH subsistence strategies or their capacity to inhabit this region. These findings reveal the ability of AMH groups to colonize regions hitherto considered uninhabitable, reopening the debate on early Upper Paleolithic population dynamics of southwestern Europe.

Abstract:Biophysical conditions played a fundamental role in early human colonization of insular territories, particularly in food-producing societies dealing with limited resources and the challenges of maintaining a sustainable carrying capacity. Studies on past human colonization of small oceanic islands thus offer insights into economic plasticity, ecological impacts, and adaptation of early food-producing groups. On the coast of southern Chile, early evidence is dated to 950 cal BP of island colonization by coastal populations with mainland subsistence systems based on the exploitation of marine resources, along with gathering, managing, and cultivating plants and hunting terrestrial animals. Strikingly, the extent to which these mixed economies contributed to insular colonization efforts is largely unknown. Here we used organic residue analysis of ceramic artifacts to shed light on the subsistence of populations on Mocha Island in southern Chile. We extracted and analyzed lipids from 51 pottery sherds associated with the El Vergel cultural complex that flourished in southern Chile between 950 and 400 cal BP. Chemical and stable isotope analysis of the extracts identified a range of food products, including C 3 and C 4 plants and marine organisms. The results reveal the central role of mixed subsistence systems in fueling the colonization of Mocha Island.

Abstract:Oceanic islands are vulnerable ecosystems and their flora has been under pressure since the arrival of the first humans. Human activities and both deliberately and inadvertently introduced biota have had and continue to have a severe impact on island endemic plants. The number of alien plants has increased nearly linearly on many islands, perhaps resulting in extinction-based saturation of island floras. Here, we provide evidence for such a scenario in Alejandro Selkirk, Robinson Crusoe Islands (Archipelago Juan Fernández, Chile). We compared species richness and species composition of historical vegetation samples from 1917 with recent ones from 2011. Changes in species' relative occurrence frequency were related to their taxonomic affiliation, dispersal mode, distribution status, and humidity and temperature preferences. While total species richness of vascular plants remained relatively similar, species composition changed significantly. Plants endemic to the Robinson Crusoe Islands declined, exotic species increased substantially within the period of ca. 100 years. Further, the relative occurrence frequency of plants with preferences for very warm and humid climate decreased, while the opposite was found for plants preferring drier and colder environments. Potential drivers responsible for this dramatic shift in the vegetation within only one century might have been the large goat population affecting especially small populations of endemic plants and climatic changes. Taking into account a substantial extinction debt, we expect further shifts in the vegetation of this small oceanic island toward alien plants. This would have significant negative consequences on global biodiversity, considering that island floras contribute substantially to global plant species richness due to their high proportion of endemics.

Abstract:Tragically, human history has always been determined by the experience of being exiled. This has been discussed in historical documents and especially in literary texts throughout time. The present essay first reflects on the wide range of examples for this topic, and then illustrates it through a critical reading of the Old High German heroic poem, “Hildebrandslied,” and the Middle High German heroic epic, Nibelungenlied. Each time, the experience of exile is described in moving, horrific terms and utilized as a metaphor of the tragedy of the human existence. Insofar as these two medieval examples strike us as so timeless and universal, we can recognize here, once again, the great significance of medieval literature for the exploration of fundamental aspects in our lives, particularly in extreme cases.

By traversing the narratives of writers, wanderers, mariners, prisoners, recluses, and soldiers, this book offers writers and readers a chance to re-think the parameters of their own circumstances. Exploring a broad range of themes, from writing during a pandemic (COVID-19), travel writing, writing from incarceration, and writing within war and conflict zones, each chapter will look at historical contexts as well as contemporary examples within these themes to demonstrate the rich history and current relevance of writing during confinement and isolation. Abstract:Every individual who has not been born on an island is a foreigner, an intruder. Consequently, the construction of human island identity involves a contrast with the other, the non-islander. The objective of this study is to ascertain the historical origin of the identity of the Macaronesian islander. The island areas that are being addressed are conditioned by their geographical location in relation to their surrounding territories. That is, their proximity to Africa, their link to America and their dependence on Europe. In short, social, economic and cultural development is determined by the related dynamic ocean environment, i.e., the Atlantic. This research analyses the fluid contacts, complementarity and historical dependencies between the Macaronesian islands that promoted not only a feeling of belonging to supranational Iberian monarchies, but also a sense of belonging to the same region formed by a Portuguese and Spanish population of extra-peninsular origin with its nexus being its insularity.
