Abstract:In earlier work we initiated a program to study relationships between finite groups and arithmetic geometric invariants of modular curves in a systematic way. In the present work we continue this program, with a focus on the two smallest sporadic simple Mathieu groups. To do this we first elucidate a connection between a special case of umbral moonshine and the imaginary quadratic class numbers. Then we use this connection to classify a distinguished set of modules for the smallest sporadic Mathieu group. Finally we establish consequences of the classification for the congruent number problem of antiquity.

Abstract:We describe the finite subgraph $\mathfrak{M}$ of Conway's Big Picture required to describe all $171$ genus zero groups appearing in monstrous moonshine. We determine the local structure of $\mathfrak{M}$ and give a purely group-theoretic description of this picture, based on powers of the conjugacy classes $24J$ and $8C$. We expect similar results to hold for umbral moonshine groups and give the details for the largest Mathieu group $M_{24}$.

Abstract:A recent observation by Eguchi, Ooguri and Tachikawa (EOT) suggests a relationship between the largest Mathieu group M24 and the elliptic genus of K3. This correspondence would be naturally explained by the existence of a non-linear sigma-model on K3 with the Mathieu group as its group of symmetries. However, all possible symmetry groups of K3 models have been recently classified and none of them contains M24. We review the evidence in favour of the EOT conjecture and discuss the open problems in its physical interpretation.

Monstrous Moonshine for integral group rings

Abstract:We propose a conjecture that is a substantial generalization of the genus zero assertions in both Monstrous Moonshine and Modular Moonshine. Our conjecture essentially asserts that if we are given any homomorphism to the complex numbers from a representation ring of a group ring for a subgroup of the Monster, we obtain a Hauptmodul by applying this homomorphism to a self-dual integral form of the Moonshine module. We reduce this conjecture to the genus-zero problem for "quasi-replicable" functions, by applying Borcherds's integral form of the Goddard-Thorn no-ghost theorem together with some analysis of the Laplacian on an integral form of the Monster Lie algebra. We prove our conjecture for cyclic subgroups of the Monster generated by elements in class 4A, and we explicitly determine the multiplicities for a decomposition of the integral Moonshine Module into indecomposable modules of the integral group rings for these groups.

They talk about the notches on the Ishango bone and the various uses of psi in maths and physics; they arrive at dessins d’enfants, moonshine concepts, Rademacher sums and their significance in the quantum world. You should not miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell’s theorem to the Baby Monster group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

Topological modularity of Monstrous Moonshine

Abstract:We explore connections among Monstrous Moonshine, orbifolds, the Kitaev chain and topological modular forms. Symmetric orbifolds of the Monster CFT, together with further orbifolds by subgroups of Monster, are studied and found to satisfy the divisibility property, which was recently used to rule out extremal holomorphic conformal field theories. For orbifolds by cyclic subgroups of Monster, we arrive at divisibility properties involving the full McKay-Thompson series. Orbifolds by non-abelian subgroups of Monster are further considered by utilizing the data of Generalized Moonshine.

Abstract:In these notes, based on lectures given in Istanbul, we give an introduction both to Monstrous Moonshine and to the classification of rational conformal field theories, using this as an excuse to explore several related structures and go on a little tour of modern math. We will discuss Lie algebras, modular functions, the finite simple group classification, vertex operator algebras, Fermat's Last Theorem, category theory, (generalised) Kac-Moody algebras, denominator identities, the A-D-E meta-pattern, representations of affine algebras, Galois theory, etc. This work is informal and pedagogical, and aimed mostly at grad students in math or math phys, but I hope that many interested nonexperts will find something of value here -- like any good Walt Disney movie I try not to completely ignore the `grown-ups'. My emphasis is on ideas and motivations, so these notes are intended to complement other papers and books where this material is presented with more technical detail. The level of difficulty varies significantly from topic to topic. The two parts -- in fact any of the sections -- can be read independently.

Abstract:In this expository note, we review the recent developments about Maulik and Okounkov’s stable bases for the Springer resolution \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$T^*(G/B)$$\end{document}. In the cohomology case, we compute the action of the graded affine Hecke algebra on the stable basis, which is used to obtain the localization formulae. We further identify the stable bases with the Chern–Schwartz–MacPherson classes of the Schubert cells. This relation is used to prove the positivity conjecture of Aluffi and Mihalcea. For the K theory stable basis, we first compute the action of the affine Hecke algebra on it, which is used to deduce the localization formulae via root polynomial method. Similar as the cohomology case, they are also identified with the motivic Chern classes of the Schubert cells. This identification is used to prove the Bump–Nakasuji–Naruse conjecture about the unramified principal series of the Langlands dual group over non-Archimedean local fields. In the end, we study the wall R-matrices, which relate stable bases for different alcoves. As an application, we give a categorification of the stable bases via the localization of Lie algebras over positive characteristic fields.
Modular invariance groups and defect McKay-Thompson series

Abstract:It has been known since 1992 that the McKay-Thompson series $T_g(q)$ of the Moonshine module form Hauptmoduln for genus zero subgroups of $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$. In 2021, Lin and Shao constructed a series analogous to the McKay-Thompson series (a twined partition function of the Monster CFT), but using a non-invertible topological defect rather than an element of the Monster group $\mathcal{M}$. This "defect McKay-Thompson series" was found to be invariant under a genus zero subgroup of $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$, but was shown not to be the Hauptmodul of the subgroup. Nevertheless, one might wonder if a weaker version of Borcherds' theorem holds for non-invertible defects: perhaps defect McKay-Thompson series enjoy genus zero invariance groups in $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$, whether or not they are Hauptmoduln for those groups. Using the decompositions of the monster stress tensor found in Bae et al. (2021), we construct several new defect McKay-Thompson series, study their modular properties, and determine their invariance groups in $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$. We discover that many of the invariance groups are not genus zero.

Abstract:The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.

Abstract:We present new methods of generating Prouhet-Tarry-Escott partitions of arbitrarily large regularity. One of these methods generalizes the construction of the Thue-Morse sequence to finite alphabets with more than two letters. We show how one can use such partitions to (theoretically) pour the same volume coffee from an urn into a finite number of cups so that each cup gets almost the same amount of caffeine.

Abstract:The Moonshine module is a $c=24$ conformal field theory (CFT) whose automorphism group is the Monster group. It was argued by Dixon, Ginsparg, and Harvey in \cite{Dixon:1988qd} that there exists a spin lift of the Moonshine CFT with superconformal symmetry. Reference \cite{Dixon:1988qd} did not provide an explicit construction of a superconformal current. The present paper fills that gap. In fact, we will construct several superconformal currents in a spin lift of the Moonshine CFT using techniques developed in \cite{Harvey:2020jvu}. In particular, our construction relies on error correcting codes.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

An interpolation between special linear and general algebraic cobordism $\text{MSL}$ and $\text{MGL}$

Abstract:Conner and Floyd determined the torsion in the special unitary bordism $\text{MSU}$ back in the late 1960s. One of the ingredients of their work was an interpolation between $\text{MSU}$ and unitary bordism $\text{MU}$. In this work, we prove an exactly similar relation between the special, and general linear algebraic cobordism $\text{MSL}$, and $\text{MGL}$ in the stable motivic homotopy category over any Noetherian base scheme of finite Krull dimension. This gives a filtration of $\text{MGL}$ in terms of $\text{MSL}$, and the skeletal filtration of $\mathbb{P}^{\infty}$. Using that, we compute the first slice of $\text{MSL}$ over characteristic zero fields. We also compute the first line of the stable homotopy groups of $\text{MSL}$ over fields of characteristic zero.

Abstract:For finite dimensional algebras over algebraically closed fields, we study the sets of pairwise Hom-orthogonal modules and obtain new results on some open conjectures on the behaviour of bricks and several related problems, which we generally refer to as brick-Brauer-Thrall (bBT) conjectures. Using some algebraic and geometric tools, and in terms of the notion of Hom-orthogonality, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of infinite families of bricks of the same dimension. This sheds new lights on the bBT conjectures and we prove many of them for some new families of algebras. Our results imply some interesting algebraic and geometric characterizations of brick-finite algebras as conceptual generalizations of local algebras. We also verify the bBT conjectures for any algebra whose Auslander-Reiten quiver has a generalized standard component. On the one hand, our work relates and develops some recent studies of the bBT conjectures which are conducted in several directions. On the other hand, it extends some earlier results of Chindris-Kinser-Weyman, where the algebras with preprojective components were treated.

Abstract:We prove, under suitable assumptions, that $p$-torsion Tate-Shafarevich classes for elliptic curves over the rationals are visible in quotients of Jacobians of modular curves, as predicted by a conjecture of Jetchev-Stein. The key ingredient is the non-triviality of the Bertolini-Darmon bipartite Kolyvagin system, which implies that suitable cohomology classes of the system form a basis of the Selmer group modulo $p$.
