Abstract:We investigate the geometry of correspondences between curves, and prove that correspondences over a non-Archimedean valued field have potentially stable reduction, generalising and strengthening results of Coleman and Liu. This yields a concrete description of the operator on the cohomology of the generic fibres arising from linearisation of the correspondence, via the weight-monodromy filtration and Picard-Lefschetz theory. We explicitly determine stable models of Hecke operators on various quaternionic Shimura curves, and prove a generalisation of the geometric theory of canonical subgroups by Goren and Kassaei.
Hecke Actions on Loops and Periods of Iterated Shimura Integrals

Abstract:In this paper we show that the action of the classical Hecke operators T_N, N>0, act on the free abelian groups generated by the conjugacy classes of the modular group SL_2(Z) and the conjugacy classes of its profinite completion. We show that this action induces a dual action on the ring of class functions of a certain relative unipotent completion of the modular group. This ring contains all iterated integrals of modular forms that are constant on conjugacy classes. It possesses a natural mixed Hodge structure and, after tensoring with Q_ell$, a natural action of the absolute Galois group. Each Hecke operator preserves this mixed Hodge structure and commutes with the action of the absolute Galois group. Unlike in the classical case, the algebra generated by these Hecke operators is not commutative. The appendix by Pham Tiep is not included. Hecke orbits and the Mordell-Lang conjecture in distinguished categories

Abstract:Inspired by recent work of Aslanyan and Daw, we introduce the notion of $\Sigma$-orbits in the general framework of distinguished categories. In the setting of connected Shimura varieties, this concept contains many instances of (generalized) Hecke orbits from the literature. In the setting of semiabelian varieties, a $\Sigma$-orbit is a subgroup of finite rank. We show that our $\Sigma$-orbits have useful functorial properties and we use them to formulate two general statements of Mordell-Lang type (a weak one and an apparently stronger one). We prove an analogue of a recent theorem of Aslanyan and Daw in this general setting, which we apply to deduce an unconditional result about unlikely intersections in a fibered power of the Legendre family.

Systems of Hecke eigenvalues on subschemes of Shimura varieties

Abstract:We show that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues that appear in the coherent cohomology with coefficients in automorphic line bundles of any mod $p$ abelian type compact Shimura variety at hyperspecial level are the same as those appearing in any Hecke-equivariant closed subscheme. We also prove analogous results for noncompact Shimura varieties or nonclosed subschemes, such as Ekedahl-Oort strata, length strata and central leaves.

Abstract:There is a natural action of a kind of Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_n$ on the $n$th Morava $E$-theory of spaces. We construct Hecke operators in an amalgamated cohomology theory of the $n$th and the $(n+1)$st Morava $E$-theories. These operations are natural extensions of the Hecke operators in the $(n+1)$st Morava $E$-theory, and they induce an action of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_{n+1}$ on the $n$th Morava $E$-theory of spaces. We study a relationship between the actions of the Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}_n$ and $\mathcal{H}_{n+1}$ on the $n$th Morava $E$-theory, and show that the $\mathcal{H}_{n+1}$-module structure is obtained from the $\mathcal{H}_n$-module structure by the restriction along an algebra homomorphism from $\mathcal{H}_{n+1}$ to $\mathcal{H}_n$.

Abstract:We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.

ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_p^2 . ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_2^2 . Furthermore, we determine some invariant subspaces of the cusp forms for the Hecke operators.
Elliptic surfaces and toroidal superalgebras

Abstract:The equivariant cohomology of certain moduli spaces of sheaves on isotrivial elliptic surfaces are shown to admit representations of infinite dimensional Lie (super)algebras. The construction is based on work of Billig and Chen-Li-Tan on vertex representations of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, and a geometric interpretation of bc-ghost systems on Hilbert schemes of points on ruled surfaces. The role of higher-nullity toroidal extended affine lie algebras are discussed in relation to tensor products of modules of a Yangian-like associative algebra. Applications to enumerative geometry are discussed in the introduction.

Abstract:We construct a basis for the space of half-integral weight Siegel Eisenstein series of level 4N where N is odd and square-free. Then we restrict our attention to those Eisenstein series generated from elements of $\Gamma_0(4)$, commenting on why this restriction is necessary for our methods. We directly apply to these forms all Hecke operators attached to odd primes, and we realize the images explicitly as linear combinations of Siegel Eisenstein series. Using this information, we diagonalize the subspace of Eisenstein series generated from elements of $\Gamma_0(4)$, obtaining a multiplicity-one result.

Hecke and Galois Properties of Special Cycles on Unitary Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Using methods and recent results of Koskivirta, we prove the congruence relation in this case. Finally, using the action of the local Hecke algebra on the Bruhat--Tits building, we establish explicit relations (distribution relations) between the Hecke action and the Galois action on the special cycles. These relations are key for a work in progress by the author on constructing a new Euler system from these cycles and using it to prove instances of the Bloch{Kato{ Beilinson conjecture for certain Galois representations associated to automorphic forms on unitary groups.

Hecke operators on topological modular forms

Abstract:The cohomology theory TMF of topological modular forms is a derived algebro-geometric interpretation of the classical ring of complex modular forms from number theory. In this article, we refine the classical Adams operations, Hecke operators, and Atkin--Lehner involutions from endomorphisms of classical modular forms to stable operators on TMF. Our algebro-geometric formulation of these operators leads to simple proofs of their many remarkable properties and computations. From these properties, we use techniques from homotopy theory to make simple number-theoretic deductions, including a rederivation of some classical congruences of Ramanujan and providing new infinite families of classical Hecke operators which satisfy Maeda's conjecture.

Hecke operators and analytic Langlands correspondence for curves over local fields

Abstract:We construct analogues of the Hecke operators for the moduli space of G-bundles on a curve X over a local field F with parabolic structures at finitely many points. We conjecture that they define commuting compact normal operators on the Hilbert space of half-densities on this moduli space. In the case F=C, we also conjecture that their joint spectrum is in a natural bijection with the set of opers on X for the Langlands dual group with real monodromy. This may be viewed as an analytic version of the Langlands correspondence for complex curves. Furthermore, we conjecture an explicit formula relating the eigenvalues of the Hecke operators and the global differential operators studied in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1908.09677" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.09677">arXiv:1908.09677</a>. Assuming the compactness conjecture, this formula follows from a certain system of differential equations satisfied by the Hecke operators, which we prove in this paper for G=PGL(n).

Mixed Hodge structures and Siegel operators

Abstract:In this paper we study mixed Hodge structures on the cohomology of locally symmetric varieties and give an application to modular forms. After proving vanishing of some Hodge numbers, we focus on the weight filtration on the last Hodge subspace of the middle degree cohomology. We prove that the weight filtration coincides with the corank filtration on the space of modular forms of canonical weight defined by the Siegel operators, and calculate the graded quotients. As an application, we deduce surjectivity of the total Siegel operators in many cases, and identify an obstruction space in the remaining case.

Mod $\ell$ multiplicities in certain $U(4)$ Shimura varieties

Abstract:We use the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method to investigate the multiplicities with which Hecke eigensystems appear in the mod-$\ell$ cohomology of unitary Shimura sets, associated to central simple algebras of the form $B=M_2(D)$, for $D$ a nonsplit quaternion algebra over a $CM$ field. We follow a similar strategy to the one used in our prior work for Shimura curves, exploiting the natural self-duality in this setting. Our method requires a careful analysis of certain irreducible components of local deformation rings. We introduce and analyze a new local model for local deformation rings specific to the case of a banal prime, which is significantly better behaved than the standard local models for local deformation rings. Our main result is a "multiplicity $2^a$ result", in the case where quaternion algebra $D$ ramifies only at banal primes, where $a$ is the number of places in the discriminant of $D$ which satisfy a certain Galois theoretic condition. We also prove an additional statement about the endomorphism ring of the cohomology of the Shimura set, which has an application to the study of congruence modules.

Abstract:Following an outline of Rezk, we give a construction of complex-analytic $G$-equivariant elliptic cohomology for an arbitrary compact Lie group $G$ and we prove some of its fundamental properties. The construction is parametrised over the orbit category of the groupoid of principal $G$-bundles over 2-dimensional tori and generalises Grojnowski's construction of equivariant elliptic cohomology.

Abstract:We derive identities from Hecke operators acting on a family of Eisenstein-eta quotients, yielding congruences for their coefficients modulo powers of primes. As an application we derive systematic congruences for several higher-order smallest parts functions modulo prime powers, resolving a question of Garvan for these cases. We also relate moments of cranks and ranks to the partition function modulo prime powers. Some of our results strengthen and generalize those of a 2023 paper by Wang and Yang.

Abstract:Let $T_m(N,2k)$ denote the $m$-th Hecke operator on the space $S_{2k}(\Gamma_0(N))$ of cuspidal modular forms of weight $2k$ and level $N$. In this paper, we study the non-repetition of the second coefficient of the characteristic polynomial of $T_m(N,2k)$. We obtain results in the horizontal aspect (where $m$ varies), the vertical aspect (where $k$ varies), and the level aspect (where $N$ varies). Finally, we use these non-repetition results to extend a result of Vilardi and Xue on distinguishing Hecke eigenforms.

Eichler-Shimura theory for general congruence subgroups

Abstract:This article aims to extend the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem for cusp forms on a congruence subgroup of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ to the whole space of modular forms. To regularize the Eichler-Shimura integral at infinity we reconstruct the standard formalism of the Eichler-Shimura theory starting from an abstract differential definition of the integral. The article also provides new proof of Hida's twisted Eichler-Shimura isomorphism for the modular forms with nebentypus using the isomorphism theorem mentioned above. We compute the Eichler-Shimura homomorphism for a family of Eisenstein series on $\Gamma(N)$ and prove algebraicity results for the cohomology classes attached to a basis of the space of Eisenstein series on a general congruence subgroup.
