Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

On the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for modular abelian surfaces

Abstract:Let $A$ be a modular abelian surface over $Q$ which either has trivial geometric endomorphism ring, or arises as the restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field which is modular and is not a $Q$-curve. In the former case, assume that there exists an odd Dirichlet character $\chi$ such that $L(A,\chi,1)\neq 0$. We prove the following implication: if $L(A, 1) \ne 0$, and the $p$-adic eigenvariety for $GSp_4$ is smooth at the point corresponding to $A$ (and some auxiliary technical hypotheses hold), then $A(Q)$ is finite, as predicted by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the $p$-part of the Tate--Shafarevich group is also finite. We also prove one inclusion of the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $A$. Moreover, we also prove analogous results for cohomological automorphic representations of $GSp_4$, removing many of the restrictive hypotheses in our earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.05960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.05960">2003.05960</a>]; for cohomological representations we do not need to assume smoothness of the eigenvariety, since it is automatic in this case. The main ingredient in the proof is the Euler system attached to the spin representations of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms constructed in our earlier work with Skinner.

Abstract:We prove the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg Conjecture for the group Z/4xZ/4 by computing the connective real k-homology of the classifying space with the Adams spectral sequence and two types of detection theorems for the kernel of the alpha invariant: one based on eta-invariants, closely following work of Botvinnik-Gilkey-Stolz, and a second one based on homological methods. Along the way, we determine differentials of the Adams spectral sequence for classifying spaces involved in the computation, and we study the cap structure of the Adams spectral sequence for sub-hopf algebras of the Steenrod algebra relevant to the computation of connective real and complex k-homology.

Abstract: In this paper, we prove Dahmen and Beukers' conjecture that the number of integral Lam\'{e} equations with index $n$ modulo scalar equivalence with the monodromy group dihedral $D_{N}$ of order $2N$ is given by \[L_{n}(N)=\frac{1}{2}\left( \frac{n(n+1)\Psi(N)}{24}-\left( a_{n}% \phi(N)+b_{n}\phi(\tfrac{N}{2}) \right) \right) +\frac{2}% {3}\varepsilon_{n}(N).\] Our main tool is the new pre-modular form $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $n(n+1)/2$ introduced by Lin and Wang \cite{LW2} and the associated modular form $M_{n,N}(\tau):=\prod_{(r,s)}Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $\Psi(N)n(n+1)/{2}$, where the product runs over all $N$-torsion points $(r,s)$ of exact order $N$. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to the precise formula of the vanishing order of $M_{n,N}(\tau)$ at infinity: \[v_{\infty}(M_{n,N}(\tau))=a_{n}\phi(N)+b_{n}\phi( N/2).\] This formula is extremely hard to prove because the explicit expression of $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ is not known for general $n$. Here we succeed to prove it by using certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. Our result also indicates that this conjecture is intimately connected with the problem of counting pole numbers of algebraic solutions of certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. The main results of this paper has been announced in \cite{Lin-CDM}.

Abstract:The Prime Graph Question for integral group rings asks if it is true that if the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of a finite group G contains an element of order pq, for some primes p and q, also G contains an element of that order. We answer this question for the three Conway sporadic simple groups after reducing it to a combinatorial question about Young tableaux and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. This finishes work of V. Bovdi, A. Konovalov and S. Linton.

An integral formula for Lie groups, and the Mathieu conjecture reduced to Abelian non-Lie conjectures

Abstract:We present an explicit integration formula for the Haar integral on a compact connected Lie group. This formula relies on a known decomposition of a compact connected simple Lie group into symplectic leaves, when one views the group as a Poisson Lie group. In this setting the Haar integral is constructed using the Kostant harmonic volume form on the corresponding flag manifold, and explicit coordinates are known for these invariant differential forms. The formula obtained is related to one found by Reshetikhin-Yakimov. Using our integration formula, we reduce the Mathieu conjecture to two stronger conjectures about Laurent polynomials in several complex variables with polynomial coefficients in several real variable polynomials. In these stronger conjectures there is no reference to Lie group theory.

Euler characteristics of arithmetic groups

Abstract:We develop a general method for computing the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups G of GL_m(O_K) where O_K is the ring of integers in a number field K. With this method we find, that for large, explicitly computed dimensions m, the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups of GL_m(O_K) vanishes. For other cases, some of them very important for spaces of multiple polylogarithms, we compute non-zero homological Euler characteristic. With the same method we find all the torsion elements in GL_3(Z) up to conjugation. Finally, our method allows us to obtain a formula for the Dedekind zeta function at -1 in terms of the ideal class set and the multiplicative group of quadratic extensions of the base ring.

The Bieri-Neumann-Strebel sets of quasi-projective groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex quasi-projective variety and $\Gamma=\pi_1(X)$. Let $\chi \colon \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$ be an additive character. We prove that the ray $[\chi]$ does not belong to the BNS set $\Sigma(\Gamma)$ if and only if it comes as a pullback along an algebraic fibration $f \colon X \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. We also prove that if $\pi_1(X)$ admits a solvable quotient which is not virtually nilpotent, there exists a finite étale cover $X_1 \to X$ and a fibration $f \colon X_1 \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. Both of these results were proved by Delzant in the case when $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We deduce that $\Gamma$ is virtually solvable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent, generalising the theorems of Delzant and Arapura-Nori. As a byproduct, we prove a version of Simpson's Lefschetz Theorem for the integral leaves of logarithmic $1$-forms that do not extend to any partial compactification. We give two applications of our results. First, we strengthen the recent theorem of Cadorel-Deng-Yamanoi on virtual nilpotency of fundamental groups of quasi-projective $h$-special and weakly special manifolds. Second, we prove the sharpness of Suciu's tropical bound for the fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective varieties and answer a question of Suciu on the topology of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:In earlier work we initiated a program to study relationships between finite groups and arithmetic geometric invariants of modular curves in a systematic way. In the present work we continue this program, with a focus on the two smallest sporadic simple Mathieu groups. To do this we first elucidate a connection between a special case of umbral moonshine and the imaginary quadratic class numbers. Then we use this connection to classify a distinguished set of modules for the smallest sporadic Mathieu group. Finally we establish consequences of the classification for the congruent number problem of antiquity.

Abstract:A recent observation by Eguchi, Ooguri and Tachikawa (EOT) suggests a relationship between the largest Mathieu group M24 and the elliptic genus of K3. This correspondence would be naturally explained by the existence of a non-linear sigma-model on K3 with the Mathieu group as its group of symmetries. However, all possible symmetry groups of K3 models have been recently classified and none of them contains M24. We review the evidence in favour of the EOT conjecture and discuss the open problems in its physical interpretation.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the torsion points of $E$ generate over $F$ an abelian extension of $K$. In this paper we prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/F$ in analytic rank $1$ for primes $p>3$ split in $K$. This was previously known for $F=\mathbb{Q}$ by work of Rubin as a consequence of his proof of the Mazur--Swinnerton-Dyer ``main conjecture'' for rational CM elliptic curves, but the problem remained wide open for general $F$. The approach in this paper, based on a novel application of an idea of Bertolini--Darmon--Prasanna to consider a carefully chosen decomposable Rankin--Selberg convolution of two CM modular forms having the Hecke $L$-function of interest as one of the factors, circumvents the use of $p$-adic heights and Bertrand's $p$-adic transcendence results in previous approaches. It also yields a proof of similar results for CM abelian varieties $A/K$, and for CM modular forms of higher weight.

On fine Mordell-Weil groups over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Greenberg has posed a question whether the structure of the fine Selmer group over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ can be described by cyclotomic polynomials in a certain precise manner. A recent work of Lei has made progress on this problem by proving that the fine Mordell-Weil group (in the sense of Wuthrich) does have this required property. The goal of this paper is study the analogous question of Greenberg over various $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field $F$. In particular, when the elliptic curve has complex multiplication by the ring of integers of the imaginary quadratic field, we obtain analogous results of Lei over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension and anti-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. In the event that the elliptic curve has good ordinary reduction at the prime $p$, we further obtain a result over the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$ unramified outside precisely one of the prime of $F$ above $p$. Finally, we study the situation of an elliptic curve over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension under the generalized Heegner hypothesis. Along the way, we establish an analogous result for the BDP-Selmer group. This latter result is then applied to obtain a relation between the BDP $p$-adic $L$-function and the Mordell-Weil rank growth in the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Building on work of M. Müger and L. Tuset, we reduce the Mathieu conjecture, formulated by O. Mathieu in 1997, for $SU(N)$ to a simpler conjecture in purely abelian terms. We sketch a similar reduction for $SO(N)$. The proofs rely on Euler-style parametrizations of these groups, which we discuss including proofs.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that the special-value conjecture for the zeta function of a proper, regular, flat arithmetic surface formulated in [6] at $s=1$ is equivalent to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the Jacobian of the generic fibre. There are two key results in the proof. The first is the triviality of the correction factor of [6, Conjecture 5.12], which we show for arbitrary regular proper arithmetic schemes. In the proof we need to develop some results for the eh-topology on schemes over finite fields which might be of independent interest. The second result is a different proof of a formula due to Geisser, relating the cardinalities of the Brauer and the Tate–Shafarevich group, which applies to arbitrary rather than only totally imaginary base fields.
