Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:The Prime Graph Question for integral group rings asks if it is true that if the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of a finite group G contains an element of order pq, for some primes p and q, also G contains an element of that order. We answer this question for the three Conway sporadic simple groups after reducing it to a combinatorial question about Young tableaux and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. This finishes work of V. Bovdi, A. Konovalov and S. Linton.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Monstrous Moonshine for integral group rings

Abstract:We propose a conjecture that is a substantial generalization of the genus zero assertions in both Monstrous Moonshine and Modular Moonshine. Our conjecture essentially asserts that if we are given any homomorphism to the complex numbers from a representation ring of a group ring for a subgroup of the Monster, we obtain a Hauptmodul by applying this homomorphism to a self-dual integral form of the Moonshine module. We reduce this conjecture to the genus-zero problem for "quasi-replicable" functions, by applying Borcherds's integral form of the Goddard-Thorn no-ghost theorem together with some analysis of the Laplacian on an integral form of the Monster Lie algebra. We prove our conjecture for cyclic subgroups of the Monster generated by elements in class 4A, and we explicitly determine the multiplicities for a decomposition of the integral Moonshine Module into indecomposable modules of the integral group rings for these groups.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective curve over a finite field F with q elements. For m⩾1, let Xm be the curve X over the finite field Fm, the m-th extension of F. Let Kn(m) be the K-group Kn(Xm) of the smooth projective curve Xm. In this paper, we study the structure of the groups Kn(m). If l is a prime, we establish an analogue of Iwasawa theorem in algebraic number theory for the orders of the l-primary part Kn(lm){l} of Kn(lm). In particular, when X is an elliptic curve E defined over F, our method determines the structure of Kn(E). Our results can be applied to construct an efficient DL system in elliptic cryptography.
The Bieri-Neumann-Strebel sets of quasi-projective groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex quasi-projective variety and $\Gamma=\pi_1(X)$. Let $\chi \colon \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$ be an additive character. We prove that the ray $[\chi]$ does not belong to the BNS set $\Sigma(\Gamma)$ if and only if it comes as a pullback along an algebraic fibration $f \colon X \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. We also prove that if $\pi_1(X)$ admits a solvable quotient which is not virtually nilpotent, there exists a finite étale cover $X_1 \to X$ and a fibration $f \colon X_1 \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. Both of these results were proved by Delzant in the case when $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We deduce that $\Gamma$ is virtually solvable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent, generalising the theorems of Delzant and Arapura-Nori. As a byproduct, we prove a version of Simpson's Lefschetz Theorem for the integral leaves of logarithmic $1$-forms that do not extend to any partial compactification. We give two applications of our results. First, we strengthen the recent theorem of Cadorel-Deng-Yamanoi on virtual nilpotency of fundamental groups of quasi-projective $h$-special and weakly special manifolds. Second, we prove the sharpness of Suciu's tropical bound for the fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective varieties and answer a question of Suciu on the topology of hyperplane arrangements.

The McKay Conjecture on character degrees

Abstract:McKay's conjecture (1971) on character degrees was reduced by Isaacs-Malle-Navarro (2007) to a so-called inductive condition on characters of finite quasisimple groups [IMN07], thus opening the way to a proof of McKay's conjecture using the classification of finite simple groups. After [Ma07], [Ma08], [S12], [CS13], [KS16], [MS16], [CS17a], [CS17b], [CS19], [S23a], [S23b], we complete here the last step of a proof with an analysis of the representations of certain normalizers ${\mathrm N}_G({\mathbf S})$ in $G={\mathbf G}^F$ of maximal $d$-tori ${\mathbf S}$ ($d\geq 3$) of the ambient simple simply-connected algebraic group ${\mathbf G}$ of type ${\mathrm D}_l$ ($l\geq 4$) for which $F$ is a Frobenius endomorphism. To establish the so-called local conditions A$(d)$ and B$(d)$, we introduce a certain class of $F$-stable reductive subgroups ${\mathbf M}\leq {\mathbf G}$ of maximal rank where ${\mathbf M}^\circ$ is of type ${\mathrm D}_{l_1}\times {\mathrm D}_{l-l_1}$ with ${\mathbf M}/{\mathbf M}^\circ$ of order 2. They are an efficient substitute for ${\mathrm N}_G({\mathbf S})$ or the local subgroups in non-defining characteristic relevant to McKay's abstract statement. For a general class of those subgroups ${\mathbf M}^F$ we describe their characters and the action of $\operatorname {Aut}({\mathbf G}^F)_{{\mathbf M}^F}$ on them, showing in particular that $\mathrm{Irr}({\mathbf M}^F)$ and $\mathrm {Irr}({\mathbf G}^F)$ share some key features in that regard. With this established, McKay's conjecture is now a theorem stating $\textit{McKay's equality}$: For any prime $\ell$, any finite group has as many irreducible complex characters of degree prime to $\ell$ as the normalizers of its Sylow $\ell$-subgroups.

Abstract:We construct a finite subgroup of Brauer-Manin obstruction for detecting the existence of integral points on integral models of homogeneous spaces of linear algebraic groups of multiplicative type. As application, the strong approximation theorem for linear algebraic groups of multiplicative type is established. Moreover, the sum of two integral squares over some quadratic fields is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate geometric and combinatorial aspects of the mysterious relationship between the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental group of the projective line punctured at zero, infinity, and N-th roots of unity, and the geometry of modular manifolds for the congruence subgroup Y(m;N) of GL(m,Z) fixing (0, ... , 0, 1) modulo N. To achieve this, we consider a canonical collection of elements in the image of the motivic Galois Lie algebra, spanning it over Q. These elements are the motivic correlators at N-th roots of unity. We assign to them chains in the complex computing cohomology of certain local systems on the space Y(m;N). Their geometric properties reflect, in a mysterious way, properties of motivic correlators. This construction allows to establish the relationship with high precision for m up to 4. The m=2, 3 cases were investigated by the author before in the Hodge and the Galois set-up.

Abstract:Let $N$ be a positive integer and $\Gamma$ be a subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ containing $\Gamma_1(N)$. Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $\mathcal{O}$ be an order of discriminant $D_\mathcal{O}$ in $K$. Under some assumptions, we show that $\Gamma$ induces a form class group of discriminant $D_\mathcal{O}$ (or of order $\mathcal{O}$) and level $N$ if and only if there is a certain canonical model of the modular curve for $\Gamma$ defined over a suitably small number field. In this way we can find an interesting link between two different subjects, which will be useful in the study of certain quadratic Diophantine equations in terms of primes $p$.

Abstract:Let $G(\mathbb{Q})$ be a simply connected Chevalley group over $\mathbb{Q}$ corresponding to a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $V$ be a finite dimensional faithful highest weight $\mathfrak g$-module and let $V_\mathbb{Z}$ be a Chevalley $\mathbb{Z}$-form of $V$. Let $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$ be the subgroup of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ that preserves $V_{\mathbb{Z}}$ and let $G(\mathbb{Z})$ be the group of $\mathbb{Z}$-points of $G(\mathbb{Q})$. Then $G(\mathbb{Q})$ is \emph{integral} if $G(\mathbb{Z})=\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$. Chevalley's original work constructs a scheme-theoretic integral form of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ which equals $\Gamma(\mathbb{Z})$. Here we give a representation-theoretic proof of integrality of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ using only the action of $G(\mathbb{Q})$ on $V$, rather than the language of group schemes. We discuss the challenges and open problems that arise in trying to extend this to a proof of integrality for Kac-Moody groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:An MV-algebra (equivalently, a lattice-ordered Abelian group with a distinguished order unit) is strongly semisimple if all of its quotients modulo finitely generated congruences are semisimple. All MV-algebras satisfy a Chinese Reminder Theorem, as was first shown by Keimel four decades ago in the context of lattice-groups. In this note we prove that the Chinese Remainder Theorem admits a considerable strengthening for strongly semisimple structures.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix with corresponding Kac--Moody algebra $\frak{g}$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. Let $V=V^{\lambda}$ be an integrable highest weight $\frak{g}$-module and let $V_{\mathbb Z}=V^{\lambda}_{\mathbb Z}$ be a ${\mathbb Z}Z$-form of $V$. Let $G$ be an associated minimal representation-theoretic Kac--Moody group and let $G({\mathbb Z})$ be its integral subgroup. Let $\Gamma({\mathbb Z})$ be the Chevalley subgroup of $G$, that is, the subgroup that stabilizes the lattice $V_{{\mathbb Z}}$ in $V$. For a subgroup $M$ of $G$, we say that $M$ is integral if $M\cap G({\mathbb Z})=M\cap \Gamma({\mathbb Z})$ and that $M$ is strongly integral if there exists $v\in V^{\lambda}_{\mathbb Z}$ such that, for all $g\in M$, $g\cdot v\in V_{\mathbb{Z}}$ implies $g\in G({\mathbb{Z}})$. We prove strong integrality of inversion subgroups $U_{(w)}$ of $G$ where, for $w\in W$, $U_{(w)}$ is the the group generated by positive real root groups that are flipped to negative roots by $w^{-1}$. We use this to prove strong integrality of subgroups of the unipotent subgroup $U$ of $G$ generated by commuting real root groups. When $A$ has rank 2, this gives strong integrality of subgroups $U_1$ and $U_2$ where $U=U_{1}{\Large{*}}\ U_{2}$ and each $U_{i}$ is generated by `half' the positive real roots.

Abstract:We define some formal moduli space of quasi-isogenies of isoclinic $p$-divisible groups with a non-reductive group as the "structure group". We then formulate new Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma conjectures for Bessel subgroups in the context of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. Some (very limited) evidence is presented.

Abstract:Zassenhaus Conjecture for torsion units states that every augmentation one torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group G is conjugate to an element of G in the units of rational group algebra QG. This conjecture has been proved for nilpotent groups, metacyclic groups and some other families of groups. We prove the conjecture for cyclic-by-abelian groups.

Abstract:By classifying $S$-maximal amenable subgroups of algebraic groups over a global field of characteristic zero, we obtain a complete classification of maximal amenable subgroups up to commensurability in the respective arithmetic groups. Futhermore, we prove that these commensurably maximal amenable subgroups are singular and therefore give rise to maximal amenable von Neumann subalgebras.

Linear Chern-Hopf-Thurston conjecture

Abstract:If $X$ is a closed $2n$-dimensional aspherical manifold, i.e., the universal cover of $X$ is contractible, then the Chern-Hopf-Thurston conjecture predicts that $(-1)^n\chi(X)\geq 0$. We prove this conjecture when $X$ is a complex projective manifold whose fundamental group admits an almost faithful linear representation over any field. In fact, we prove a much stronger statement that if $X$ is a complex projective manifold with large fundamental group and $\pi_1(X)$ admits an almost faithful linear representation, then $\chi(X, \mathcal{P})\geq 0$ for any perverse sheaf $\mathcal{P}$ on $X$. To prove this, we introduce a vanishing cycle functor of multivalued one-forms and apply techniques from non-abelian Hodge theory, both in archimedean and non-archimedean settings. These techniques allow us to deduce the desired positivity from the geometric properties of pure and mixed period maps.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth, geometrically connected variety over a p-adic local field. We show that the pro-unipotent fundamental group of X (in both the etale and crystalline settings) satisfies the weight-monodromy conjecture, following Vologodsky. We deduce (in the etale setting) that Frobenii act semisimply on the Lie algebra of the pro-unipotent fundamental group of X, and (in the crystalline setting) that the same is true for a K-linear power of the crystalline Frobenius. We give applications to the representability and geometry of the Selmer varieties appearing in the Chabauty-Kim program, even in cases of bad reduction.
