Abstract:We precisely determined an $\bN$-graded structure of Zhu's poisson algebra $V/C_2(V)$ of vertex operator algebras $V$ of moonshine type. Namely, if $V$ is a vertex operator algebra of moonshine type with a central charge $24$, then $C_2(V)=\sum_{n=5}^{\infty}V_n+L(-1)V$.

Abstract:We study the Lie algebra of physical states associated with certain vertex operator algebras of central charge 24. By applying the no-ghost theorem from string theory we express the corresponding Lie brackets in terms of vertex algebra operations. In the special case of the Moonshine module this result answers a question of Borcherds, posed in his paper on the Monstrous moonshine conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study new classes of subVOAs of the lattice vertex operator algebras, which we call the conic, Borel, and parabolic-type subVOAs. These CFT-type VOAs, which are not necessarily strongly finitely generated, satisfy similar properties with the usual Borel and parabolic subalgebras of a Lie algebra. For the lowest-rank nontrivial example of Borel-type subVOA $V_{B}$ of $V_{\Z\al}$, we explicitly determine its Zhu's algebra $A(V_B)$ in terms of generators and relations.

Abstract:For the simple Lie algebra 50(m), we study the commutant vertex operator algebra of L (50) over cap (m)(n,0) in the n-fold tensor product L (50) over cap (m) (1,0)(circle times n). It turns out that this commutant vertex operator algebra can be realized as a fixed point subalgebra of L (50) over cap (n) (m, 0) (or its simple current extension) associated with a certain abelian group. This result may be viewed as a version of level-rank duality.

Abstract:Given a vertex operator algebra V , one can attach a graded Poisson algebra called the C2-algebra R(V). The associate Poisson scheme provides an important invariant for V and has been studied by Arakawa as the associated variety. In this article, we define and examine the cohomological variety of a vertex algebra, a notion cohomologically dual to that of the associated variety, which measures the smoothness of the associated scheme at the vertex point. We study its basic properties and then construct a closed subvariety of the cohomological variety for rational affine vertex operator algebras constructed from finite dimensional simple Lie algebras. We also determine the cohomological varieties of the simple Virasoro vertex operator algebras. These examples indicate that, although the associated variety for a rational C2-cofinite vertex operator algebra is always a simple point, the cohomological variety can have as large a dimension as possible. In this paper, we study R(V) as a commutative algebra only and do not use the property of its Poisson structure, which is expected to provide more refined invariants. The goal of this work is to study the cohomological supports of modules for vertex algebras as the cohomological support varieties for finite groups and restricted Lie algebras.

Abstract:It is proved that Zhu's algebra for vertex operator algebra associated to a positive-definite even lattice of rank one is a finite-dimensional semiprimitive quotient algebra of certain associative algebra introduced by Smith. Zhu's algebra for vertex operator algebra associated to any positive-definite even lattice is also calculated and is related to a generalization of Smith's algebra.

Abstract:In this article, we construct explicitly certain moonshine type vertex operator algebras generated by a set of Ising vectors $I$ such that (1) for any $e\neq f\in I$, the subVOA $\mathrm{VOA}(e,f)$ generated by $e$ and $f$ is isomorphic to either $U_{2B}$ or $U_{3C}$; and (2)the subgroup generated by the corresponding Miyamoto involutions $\{\tau_e|\,e\in I\}$ is isomorphic to the Weyl group of a root system of type $A_n$, $D_n$, $E_6$, $E_7$ or $E_8$. The structures of the corresponding vertex operator algebras and their Griess algebras are also studied. In particular, the central charge of these vertex operator algebras are determined.

Simple Vertex Algebras Arising From Congruence Subgroups

Abstract:Chiral de Rham complex introduced by Malikov et al. in 1998, is a sheaf of vertex algebras on any complex analytic manifold or non-singular algebraic variety. Starting from the vertex algebra of global sections of chiral de Rham complex on the upper half plane, we consider the subspace of $\Gamma$-invariant sections that are meromorphic at the cusps. The space is again a vertex operator algebra, with a linear basis consisting of lifting formulas of meromorphic modular forms. We will describe two types of lifting formulas, and generalize the Rankin-Cohen bracket to the meromorphic modular forms. As an application, we will show that the vertex algebras constructed by congruence subgroups are simple.

Abstract:We define the $\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2}$-graded meromorphic open-string vertex algebra that is an appropriate noncommutative generalization of the vertex operator superalgebra. We also illustrate an example that can be viewed as a noncommutative generalization of the free fermion vertex operator superalgebra. The example is bulit upon a universal half-integer-graded non-anti-commutative Fock space where a creation operator and an annihilation operator satisfy the fermionic anti-commutativity relation, while no relations exist among the creation operators. The former feature allows us to define the normal ordering, while the latter feature allows us to describe interactions among the fermions. With respect to the normal ordering, Wick's theorem holds and leads to a proof of weak associativity and a closed formula of correlation functions.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study nullity-[math] toroidal extended affine Lie algebras in the context of vertex algebras and their [math]-coordinated modules. Among the main results, we introduce a variant of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, associate vertex algebras to the variant Lie algebras, and establish a canonical connection between modules for toroidal extended affine Lie algebras and [math]-coordinated modules for these vertex algebras. Furthermore, by employing some results of Billig, we obtain an explicit realization of a class of irreducible modules for the variant Lie algebras.

Abstract:Certain vertex operator algebras have integral forms (integral spans of bases which are closed under the countable set of products). It is unclear when they (or integral multiples of them) are integral as lattices under the natural bilinear form on the VOA. We show that lattice-integrality may be arranged under some hypotheses, including cases of integral forms invariant by finite groups. In particular, there exists a lattice-integral Monster-invariant integral form in the Moonshine VOA.

Classification of Self-Dual Vertex Operator Superalgebras of Central Charge at Most 24

Abstract:We classify the self-dual (or holomorphic) vertex operator superalgebras of central charge 24, or in physics parlance the purely left-moving, fermionic 2-dimensional conformal field theories with just one primary field. There are exactly 969 such vertex operator superalgebras under suitable regularity assumptions (essentially strong rationality) and the assumption that the shorter moonshine module $V\!B^\natural$ is the unique self-dual vertex operator superalgebra of central charge 23.5 whose weight-1/2 and weight-1 spaces vanish. Additionally, there might be self-dual vertex operator superalgebras arising as fake copies of $V\!B^\natural$ tensored with a free fermion $F$. We construct and classify the self-dual vertex operator superalgebras by determining the 2-neighbourhood graph of the self-dual vertex operator algebras of central charge 24 and also by realising them as simple-current extensions of a dual pair containing a certain maximal lattice vertex operator algebra. We show that all vertex operator superalgebras besides $V\!B^\natural\otimes F$ and potential fake copies thereof stem from elements of the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_0$, the automorphism group of the Leech lattice $\Lambda$. By splitting off free fermions $F$, if possible, we obtain the classification for all central charges less than or equal to 24.

Abstract:In this article we prove that the full automorphism group of the baby-monster vertex operator superalgebra constructed by Hoehn is isomorphic to 2xB, where B is the baby-monster sporadic finite simple group and determine irreducible modules for the baby-monster vertex operator algebra. Our result has many corollaries. In particular, we can prove that the Z_2-orbifold construction with respect to a 2A-involution of the Monster applied to the moonshine vertex operator algebra yields the moonshine vertex operator algebra itself again.

Abstract:The coset (commutant) construction is a fundamental tool to construct vertex operator algebras from known vertex operator algebras. The aim of this paper is to provide a fundamental example of the commutants of vertex algebras ouside vertex operator algebras. Namely, the commutant $C$ of the principal subalgebra $W$ of the $A_1$ lattice vertex operator algebra $V_{A_1}$ is investigated. An explicit minimal set of generators of $C$, which consists of infinitely many elements and strongly generates $C$, is introduced. It implies that the algebra $C$ is not finitely generated. Furthermore, Zhu's Poisson algebra of $C$ is shown to be isomorphic to an infinite-dimensional algebra $\mathbb{C}[x_1,x_2,\ldots]/(x_ix_j\,|\,i,j=1,2,\ldots)$. In particular, the associated variety of $C$ consists of a point. Moreover, $W$ and $C$ are verified to form a dual pair in $V_{A_1}$.
