Abstract:In this study, the internal friction (IF) of a CuAlBe alloy during reverse martensitic transformation (MT) was investigated under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. It was found that the IF decreases regularly with the aging time in the temperature range of phase transformation. It is thought that this phenomenon is caused by the defect movement. The defects diffuse to the interfaces between martensite and austenite and pin there gradually, thus leading to the IF decrease.

Abstract:The phase transformation in the as-quenched and aged Au_7Cu_5Al_4 alloys were investigated by internal friction technique.The results show that M_s temperatures of the as-quenched and aged Au_7Cu_5Al_4 alloys are-2.7 °C and 13.8 °C,respectively.The boundary relaxation activation energy for the quenched and aged Au_7Cu_5Al_4 alloys were calculated for 131.5 kJ/mol and 93.0 kJ/mol,respectively,which indicates the difference of ordering states of the parent phases resulted by different thermal history.By high temperature internal friction measurement it is found that the B2→L2_1 ordering transition is interrupted by quenching and the parent phase state of quenched Au_7Cu_5Al_4 alloy shows B2 ordering,which suppresses martensitic transformation.
Low-temperature internal friction and thermal conductivity in plastically deformed metals due to dislocation dipoles and random stresses

Abstract:The contribution to the low frequency internal friction and the thermal conductivity due to optically vibrating edge dislocation dipoles is calculated within the modified Granato-Lucke string model. The results are compared with the recent experiments on plastically deformed samples of Al, Ta and Nb at low temperatures. It is shown that the presence of a reasonable density of optically vibrating dislocation dipoles provides a good fit to the thermal conductivity in superconducting samples. At the same time, the internal friction experiments can not be described within the standard fluttering string mechanism. We found that the problem can be solved by assuming random forces acting on the dislocation dipoles. This gives an additional contribution to the internal friction which describes well the experimental data at low temperatures while their contribution to the thermal conductivity is found to be negligible.

Abstract:Temperature is known to affect deformation mechanisms in metallic alloys. As temperature decreases, the stacking-fault energy in many face-centered cubic (fcc) alloys decreases, resulting in a change of deformation mode from dislocation slip to deformation twinning. Such an impact of temperature can be more complex in compositionally heterogeneous microstructures that exhibit, for example, local concentration fluctuation such as that in multi-principal element alloys. In this work, we compare the dislocation behavior and mechanical properties of a fcc Cr20Mn10Fe30Co30Ni10 high-entropy alloy at ambient and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. We find that a network of stacking faults is formed by uniformly extended dislocations at ambient temperatures with low stacking-fault energy, whereas at lower temperatures, uneven dissociation of dislocations becomes significant, which results in severe dislocation pile-ups together with their pronounced entanglement. Our findings indicate that as the stacking-fault energy decreases with decreasing temperature, the heterogeneity of the distribution of elements becomes more dominant in tuning the local variation of lattice resistance. As a result, the change in dislocation behavior at low temperatures strongly affects microstructural evolution and consequently leads to significantly more pronounced work hardening.

Abstract:The low frequency internal friction of the pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic transformations in three FeNiC alloys has been studied. The results show that the internal friction of the martensitic transformation is in correspondence with the model based on the hysteresis loss mechanisms associated with stress-induced motion of the interface dislocations, while that of the pearlitic and bainitic transformations obeys Postnikov's model. At a constant frequency, the internal friction peaks of the pearlitic and bainitic transformations increase as the cooling rate increases, but the temperature of the internal friction peaks decreases, and the Qmax−1 is directly proportional to the T/fmTm. When the frequency increases, the Qmax−1 of the pearlitic and bainitic transformations lowers apparently, and the temperature of the internal friction peaks increases. The internal friction of the isothermal bainitic transformation in a FeNiC alloy has also been studied, which proves that there appears a damping peak in the incubation period, and which may be attributed to the nucleation of bainite. Consequently it infers that the mechanism of the bainite reaction seems similar to that of pearlite.

Abstract:Electrical resistivity and low frequency internal friction ( IF) measurements have been performed during constant heating rate. At low frequency, a high IF peak is observed which is in good accordance with the hump appearing in electrical resistivity. It is shown that this IF is not proportional to T / f (where T is the temperature rate and f is the vibration frequency). This behavior is systematically investigated.

Abstract:In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate elementary dislocation properties in a Co-free high entropy (HEA) model alloy ($Cr_{15}Fe_{46}Mn_{17}Ni_{22}$ at. %) in comparison with a model alloy representative of Austenitic Stainless Steel (ASS) ($Cr_{20}Fe_{70}Ni_{10}$ at. %). Recently developed embedded-atom method (EAM) potentials were used to describe the atomic interactions in the alloys. Molecular Statics (MS) calculations were used to study the dislocation properties in terms of local stacking fault energy (SFE), dissociation distance while MD was used to investigate the dissociation distance under applied shear stress as a function of temperature and strain rate. It was shown that higher critical stress is required to move dislocations in the HEA alloy compared with the ASS model alloy. The theoretical investigation of simulation results of the dislocation mobility shows that a simple constitutive mobility law allows to predict dislocation velocity in both alloys over three orders of magnitude, covering the phonon drag regime and the thermally activated regime induced by dislocation unpinning from local hard configurations.

Abstract:The decomposition of Fe-Cr solid solutions during thermal aging is modeled by Atomistic Kinetic Monte Carlo (AKMC) simulations, using a rigid lattice approximation with composition dependant pair interactions that can reproduce the change of sign of the mixing energy with the alloy composition. The interactions are fitted on ab initio mixing energies and on the experimental phase diagram, as well as on the migration barriers in iron and chromium rich phases. Simulated kinetics is compared with 3D atom probe and neutron scattering experiments.

Abstract:The co-existence of spinodal decomposition and ordering in Fe-Al alloy was studied by internal friction method combined with TEM and XRD. The results show that spinodal decomposition and ording coexist during solution followed by quenching, and alpha ->alpha+FeAl occurs during this peocess. Two notable internal friction peaks appear for the as-quenched samples at 150 and 300 degrees C, which can not be observed for the annealed-specimens. The peak at 300 degrees C can be attributed to the relaxation movement of Fe-Al-V-Fe, dipole; and the peak at 150 degrees C is result from the relaxation movement of double vacancies dipole. The two peaks indicate that spinodal decomposition and ordering co-exist during quenching.

Abstract:An analysis of the processes of plastic deformation and acoustic relaxation in a high-entropy alloy Al$_{0.5}$CoCrCuFeNi was carried out. The following have been established: dominant dislocation defects; types of barriers that prevent the movement of dislocations; mechanisms of thermally activated movement of various elements of dislocation lines through barriers at room and low temperatures. Based on modern dislocation theory, quantitative estimates have been obtained for the most important characteristics of dislocations and their interaction with barriers.

Abstract:The internal friction and elastic modulus variations caused by the structural rearrangement fcc <-> fct in Mn-Fe(Cu) antiferromagnetic alloys were studied in this paper. Antiferromagnetic transition exhibits weak first-order features due to the formation of microtwins by modulus softening mechanism. Antiferromagnetic transition also assists subsequent transformation to form twinned martensite. The small hysteresis between direct and reveres martensitic transformations indicates the thermoelastic feature. Both the martensitic and its reverse transformations also depend on the modulus softening mechanism.

Abstract:The internal friction peak associated with the process of martensite and reverse martensite transformation in Au-Cd alloy were measured by torsion pendulum. There is a linear relation between the peak value and rate of heating. The stable peak (heating rate=0) is much higher than that of Fe-Mn alloy and the internal friction value is independent of frequency which is characteristic of static hysteresis loss. The height of the internal friction peak is related to the grain size of Martensites. There also appears a peak during the process of isothermal martensite transition According to these experimental results, we attributed this internal friction induced by martensite transition to those movable coherent interface under the action of vibrating stress.

Abstract:An internal friction peak associated with the viscous motion of interfaces was measured in the 50–150kHz range for the Cu-Al-Zn-Ni sample. The internal friction formula based on the viscous motion of interfaces has been derived. Also, corresponding parameters, which play an important role in shape memory effect such as viscosity coefficient, pinned force constant etc., were obtained.

Abstract:<p>High-entropy alloys (HEA) present high hardness, but low tensile ductility. Here, deformation behaviour of the nanotwinned Cu/HEA FeCoCrNi nanolaminates prepared by the previous experiment is investigated using atomic simulations. The result shows the nucleation and glide of lattice dislocations in the Cu layers dominate the initial plastic deformation in Cu/HEA multilayers, and these gliding dislocations are deposited at the twinning boundary. With the increasing strain, the dislocations are activated in HEA layer, and deposited in the Cu-HEA interface, finally facilitate slip transmission from the HEA layer to the Cu layer. The flow stress decreases and keeps a constant value with increasing nanotwinned Cu/HEA FeCoCrNi layer number, which depends upon the slip transmission and interfacial dislocation to govern strain hardening.</p>

Abstract:Accounting for longitudinal spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state, we calculate elastic constants and stacking fault energy as a function of temperature and chemical composition for Cr–Co–Ni alloys. The longitudinal spin fluctuations are demonstrated to be important for the quantitative description of the thermo-mechanical properties and the corresponding chemical and temperature dependences. Replacing Ni with Cr and Co is found to yield opposite influence on the mechanical properties at finite temperature. A high thermal stability in plasticity is predicted in the low Cr regime in Cr–Co–Ni alloys, while a good thermal stability in elasticity can be achieved in the high Cr and low Co regime. The present advance in thermo-chemical-magnetic-property enhances the understanding required for an intelligent design of multicomponent alloys toward high-technology applications.

Abstract:The aging behaviors of Cu–Cr alloys in the early stage at different temperatures are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. First principles potentials are used for the interactions between Cu and Cr atoms. The initial behavior of precipitation is characterized by transmission electron microscope and electron energy disperse spectroscopy. The results showed that Cu–Cr supersaturated solid solution is thermodynamically unstable. The mean-square displacements of the atoms are used to describe the diffusivity. At room temperature, the atoms only show harmonic vibrations near the equilibrium positions. The mutual diffusion at 873 K is different from the unidirectional diffusion in low temperatures. The calculation shows that aging process is accelerated with increasing temperature, which is not only due to the lower diffusion activation energy of Cr at higher temperature, but also because Cu atoms are also participated in the aging process. When “aging” at 1073 K, the precipitation of Cr element is dissolved again into Cu matrix, which is an “over-aging” state of Cu–Cr alloy at high temperature.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to study the interaction mechanisms between dislocations and nano-precipitates in CuFe alloys. On one hand, the critical shear stress to activate nucleation of dislocations around alpha-Fe nano-precipitates is substantially reduced, which promotes twinning deformation and dislocation gliding away from the nano-precipitates. On the other hand, nano-precipitates could also prevent dislocations from moving towards themselves. A hybrid model is developed to demonstrate the strengthening behaviors with an enhancing efficiency factor (beta) introduced. Large alpha-Fe nano-precipitates lead to high strengthening efficiency, but an optimized size is obtained owing to the softening effect of large nano-precipitates. Moreover, the strengthening effects of nano-precipitates will disappear if the loading speed exceeds a critical value.
