Abstract:As a kind of excellent diesel-blending component, polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn) have received widespread attention. Herein, Al-SBA-15 molecular sieves with different Si/Al ratios and pore sizes were synthesized and used to investigate the catalytic performance for the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers from methylal and trioxane. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and 27Al NMR were used to characterize the structures of obtained catalysts. Ammonia temperature-programmed desorption and pyridine adsorption were carried out to investigate the acid properties of the catalysts. Through comparison of the catalysts with different Al contents, it was found that the relatively weak acid was more suitable for the synthesis of PODEn than the relatively strong acid in the catalytic system of Al-SBA-15. On the Al-SBA-15(2)-150 catalyst, which has only a weak acid of 0.163 mmol/g, the highest TOX conversion rate and highest PODEn yield and selectivity were achieved, showing the best catalytic performance. It appears that the PODEn synthesis can be catalyzed by not only a Brönsted acid but also a Lewis acid. The catalysts with strong acid and/or with a large number of acids will cause the generation of significant amount of methyl formate byproduct. Through comparison of the catalysts with different pore sizes, it was found that a relative larger pore size of the catalyst was beneficial for the PODEn synthesis to a certain extent under the catalysts with strong acid and/or large acid amount, but on the catalyst that had only weak acid and a relatively lesser amount, the change of pore size had almost no effect on the yield and selectivity of PODEn products.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn, CH3O(CH2O)nCH3, where n ≥ 1) are receiving much attention as ideal diesel fuel additives because they can significantly reduce the emission of smoke and engine exhaust during combustion. PODEn are synthesized over acid catalysts. In this work, highly efficient sulfate titania catalysts were prepared by impregnation for the synthesis of PODEn from dimethoxymethane (DMM) and paraformaldehyde (PF). XPS and XRF were used to determine the spatial distribution of S, and NH3-TPD and Pyridine-IR were used to measure acid properties. The concentration of the precursor solution had an important effect on the catalyst activity. The spatial distribution of S influenced the acid properties and catalyst activity. A catalytic mechanism based on Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was proposed, which explained the synergistic effect of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites in the reaction for the first time.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn, CH3O(CH2O)(n)CH3, where n >= 1) are ideal diesel fuel additives. Among the PODEn compounds, PODE3-5 have the best properties as diesel additives. A theoretical analysis of the molecular size distribution of PODEn synthesized from dimethoxymethane (DMM) and paraformaldehyde (PF) was performed based on a sequential reaction mechanism. The molecular size distribution model follows the Schulz-Flory distribution, and showed a good prediction ability at different reaction temperatures (T) and DMM/CH2O mole ratios (M), which verified the sequential reaction mechanism during the formation of PODEn. The product distribution was optimized using the molecular size distribution model and response surface methodology (RSM). At optimum operating conditions of T = 105 degrees C and M = 1.1, the conversion of formaldehyde X-CH2O has a high value of 92.4%, and the fraction of PODE3-5 in the PODEn mixture is 33.2 wt%, while the fractions of PODEn>5 and PODE2 are 9.4 wt% and 24.3 wt%, respectively. Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic Metal-Organic and Nano-Metal Chemistry

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers are a new type of diesel fuel additive, and are synthesized by using trioxymethylene and methanol as raw material and ionic liquid as catalyst. In the experiment, the effect of catalyst dosage, ratio of raw materials, reaction temperature, time and pressure, and reusing times of catalyst were studied. The results showed that when the reaction was carried out under the conditions of 5wt% catalyst, m(Trioxymethylene)/m(Methanol) 1.5, temperature 110 degrees C, time 4h, pressure 2.0 MPa, conversion of trioxymethylene is 94.25%. The ionic liquids could be reused five times without noticeable drop in activity.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dialkyl ethers, which can be blended into diesel fuels, have attracted increasing attentions due to their advantages for fuel additives. It can utilize bioethanol and biomass syngas, helping to achieve the carbon neutral target earlier. Polyoxymethylene diethyl ethers (PODEEn) synthesis requires efficient catalysts with high performance. In this work, the mesoporous acidic functional N-containing ZrNxOy catalysts were prepared with a Sol-Gel assisted solvothermal method. The acid nature and strength, morphology, crystalline structure and pore distribution of catalysts were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, pyridine-adsorption infrared spectra (Py-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) etc, showing catalyst possessing crystalline-amorphous mixed domains with smaller defective tetragonal nanoparticles and mesopores. The catalysts were applied in PODEEn synthesis, showing excellent activity and selectivity under mild conditions. And the high trioxane (TOX) conversion of 93 % and excellent PODEE2−8 selectivity of 98 % can be achieved at 80 °C under atmospheric pressure owning to the superior properties.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn) is a promising blend fuel for diesel, with high cetane number, volatility and molecular oxygen content. It has abundant feedstocks and mature technology for synthesis process. PODE3 and PODE4 are the most optimal components, and in practice 70.9% PODE3-5 can be acquired from dimethoxymethane and trioxane by using the alkanesulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquids as the catalyst. Blending PODEn in diesel improves the spray and atomization quality, verified by the increase of spray cone angle in non-evaporation conditions and the decrease of spray mean diameter. PODEn addition increases the blue combustion flame, decreases the yellow flame, increases the combustion temperature and reduces the KL factor. The chemical kinetic mechanism of PODE3 indicates that PODEn can generate active OH radicals at both low and high temperature environment, which is favorable for accelerating the combustion speed, promoting the heat release, increasing the diffusion combustion intensity and thereby increasing the combustion efficiency. Engines fueled with diesel PODEn blend fuels can remarkably improve the combustion process, increase the brake thermal efficiency (BTE), and reduce the PM, HC and CO emissions, while increase the NOx emissions. Besides, the PM distribution moved to smaller particle size and the mean diameter also decrease. Further, the nanostructure of PM proves that it can be easier oxidized. Through comprehensive analysis on fuel property, BTE and engine combustion and emission, it is suggested that the mixing volume ratio of PODEn should be no more than 20%.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether(PODEn) are ideal novel green oxygenated diesel blending compounds,which can not only utilize the excess methanol in China but also relieve the air pollution of haze. The present work provided an overview of the progress of PODEn research in China and abroad,with the focus on the research background and significance,advantages of PODEn, properties and quantitatively analysis methods,synthesis methods,process and reactor instruments. Meanwhile,the industrialization status of PODEn were introduced followed by a summarization of the characteristics of different technologies and processes. Finally,potential applications of PODEn were analyzed,and it is prospected that they are favorable to be used as diesel blending compounds,solvents or low temperature flow improver for diesel fuel.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn, CH3O(CH2O)nCH3, where n ≥ 1) are environmentally friendly diesel fuel additives because they can significantly reduce the emission of engine exhaust during combustion. It is an efficient way to synthesize PODEn from dimethoxymethane (DMM) and paraformaldehyde (PF) over solid acid catalysts. The synthesis process consisted of two steps: the depolymerization of PF and the polymerization of PODEn. In this work, the first step was proved to be the rate-determining step by analyzing the product distribution and the rate of reactions with and without PF. NKC-9 resins of different size were used to prove that the internal diffusion in catalyst was a key factor to affect the depolymerization process. The SO42−/TiO2 and SO42−/TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts were used to further prove that the catalysts with larger pores were more active for the synthesis of PODEn.

Abstract:Mesoporous Y composites which exhibit both crystallized micropores and large mesopores with narrow mesopore diameter distributions and controlled pore diameters were successfully synthesized. The composite is synthesized through an elaborate design of the SiO2@cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (SiO2@CTAB) micelle swelled by an appropriate amount of 1,3,5-trimenthylbenzene (TMB); it is subsequently fabricated from the condensing of the Y zeolite precursors, which contain Y zeolite seeds, on the mesoscale micelle followed by a hydrothermal crystallization process. The effect of synthesis conditions such as the amounts of CTAB, TMB and TEOS added to the synthesis system on the physicochemical properties of the obtained products was examined. The as-synthesized materials were carefully characterized by employing XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM and pyridine-adsorbed FTIR techniques. The mesoporous Y zeolite exhibited both the typical diffraction characteristics of Y zeolites in the wide-angle XRD pattern, and the typical diffraction characteristics of a narrowly dispersed mesopore structure in the small-angle XRD pattern is successfully synthesized for the first time. Finally, the adsorption capacity for DBT and 4,6-DMDBT by samples with different mesopore diameters were assessed by a batch method. Sample MY-0.5C-0.35T-0.9B showed the highest capacity for adsorbing DBT in model diesel, and sample MY-0.5C-0.35T-1.5B showed the highest capacity for adsorbing 4,6-DMDBT in model diesel. Most importantly, sample MY-0.5C-0.35T-1.5B showed the highest adsorptive rate for both DBT and 4,6-DMDBT, which is at least 10 times faster than that of sample MY-0C-0.35T-0B because of the elimination of the diffusion limitation.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (PODEn) is a clean, effective and promising diesel additive. In this work, acidic sulfonated resin modified by zirconium (Zr4+-SR), which possess both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, was employed to catalyze the synthesis of PODEn from methanol (MeOH) and formaldehyde (FA) solution. The catalysts were investigated by various characterization methods including SEM, BET, XPS, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, Pyridine FT-IR, TG-MS and ICP-OES. It was found that the introduction of Zr4+ into cationic exchange resin formed the Lewis acid sites and improvement of the catalytic performance in PODEn synthesis from methanol and formaldehyde solution was attributed to the synergistic effect of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites. With the increase of zirconium loading, the amount of Lewis acid sites and weak acidity of the Zr4+-SR catalyst increased gradually, and the catalytic activity of the catalysts for the PODEn synthesis reaction exhibited a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. In the methanol and formaldehyde solution, Brønsted acid sites were active for the acetalization of hemiformal and methanol, while Lewis acid sites were conducive to the activation of the methylene glycol. A possible reaction route for the PODEn synthesis from methanol and formaldehyde solution was proposed. 61.1% methanol conversion, 98.7% PODE1–6 and 22.4% PODE3–6 selectivity were achieved under optimal reaction conditions. The reusability investigation of the Zr4+-SR catalyst showed a stable catalytic activity for the synthesis of PODEn from methanol and formaldehyde solution and revealed that the decrease of catalyst activity was attributed to the partial loss of the zirconium.

Abstract:To evaluate the Influence of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) on particulate matter (PM) chemical features, PM samples emitted from diesel fuel and PODE/diesel blends at volume ratios of 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % (P10, P20, and P30) were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR). Results showed that adding PODE in diesel fuel could increase the proportions of the lower carbon-atom-number components and the contents of oxygen-containing compounds in the soluble organic fractions extracted from PM samples. The ratio of oxygen to carbon (O/C), the functional groups, and the nanostructure of dry soot obtained from XPS showed that the O/C rose as the PODE volume ratio increased. The graphitization degree of dry soot decreased in the order: diesel fuel > P10 > P30 > P20. The relative content of hydroxyl functional groups exhibited the same trend, while the relative content of carbonyl functional groups exhibited an opposite trend with the graphitization degree. Moreover, according to FT-IR, both the branching degree and the relative content of hydrocarbon functional groups of aliphatics are influenced by the graphitization degree of dry soot. A turning point at P20 observed by analysis results above indicated that the chemical characteristics of PM could be affected not only by fuel properties but also by the process of fuel combustion and PM formation.

Abstract:PODEn (Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers) have high oxygen content, cetane number and good solubility in diesel fuel. In this work, pure diesel and PODE3-4/diesel blends with 10–20% PODE3-4 by volume were tested in a light-duty direct injection diesel engine without any modifications on the engine fuel supply system. Engine performance, combustion and emission characteristics were compared at various loads. The results show that PODE3-4/diesel blends can improve engine efficiency and reduce engine-out emissions significantly, especially soot emissions. It is proved that PODE3-4, of which the mass production has been achieved recently, is a promising blending component for diesel fuel.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) have higher cetane number and oxygen content than mostly used oxygenated fuels. Thus, PODE are believed to be a promising fuel substitute for compression ignition engines and have been intensively studied in compression ignition engines. In recent 5 years, due to the technical breakthrough for industrialized production of PODE in China, PODE property measurement, synthesis technology and application in compression ignition engines have been investigated extensively. This article summarizes the findings concerning PODE synthesis mainly in China and PODE application in compression ignition engines around the world. The measuring results of properties of PODE with different polymerization degrees and effects of PODE on the properties of PODE/diesel blends are integrated. Then, the present synthesis technologies which have realized industrialized production and the potential synthesis technologies in future are discussed. Furthermore, the results of application of PODE in the conventional diesel combustion mode and new compression modes are discussed. Finally, the preliminary findings of PODE oxidation mechanism are demonstrated. In all the polymers of PODE, PODE4-5 exhibit better properties for engine application based on measuring data. Blending PODE into diesel increases fuel cetane number moderately. PODE have been proved to improve combustion and emission characteristics both in conventional and new compression ignition modes in most of the experimental investigations. The absence of C-C bond in the molecule structure, avoiding the pathways of the formation of alkenes, provides more potential in reducing soot emissions. Although significant achievements have been achieved in the synthesis of PODE, realization of PODE synthesis from methanol/formaldehyde still need to be investigated.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn) are promising diesel additives that can reduce the exhaust emission remarkably. Although the thermodynamic model has been proposed for the homogenous syn-thesis of PODEn, the thermodynamics of heterogeneous synthesis of PODEn from paraformaldehyde and dimethoxymethane is still a challenge because of the complicated characteristics of paraformaldehyde. In this work, a thermodynamic model containing solid paraformaldehyde and liquid dimethoxymethane, methanol and water was established. Experimental validation showed that this model was applicable in a wide range of reaction temperature and feeding composition. This thermodynamic model was then used to study the influence of the reaction temperature, feeding ratio, and addition of water/methanol on the equilibrium conversion. The different starting compositions from heterogeneous and homogenous reactants for the synthesis of PODEn were compared based on thermodynamic analysis, showing that using paraformaldehyde and dimethoxymethane as feedstock gave the highest CH2O conversion and PODE3-5 yield.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) were synthesized from the reaction of paraformaldehyde with dimethoxymethane (DMM) over different acid catalysts at different conditions. Products were found to follow the Schulz-Flory distribution law. The chain propagation proceeds through the insertion of an individual segment of CH2O one by one, while the simultaneous insertion of a few CH2O segments or their assembly is unlikely. Due to the restriction of this law, it is difficult to increase the selectivity to the desired products (e.g., PODE3-4).

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (CH3–O–(CH2O)n–CH3, PODEn, n>1) are new concerned environmental benign alternative components for diesel fuels. This work aimed to investigate the kinetics of synthesis of PODEn from paraformaldehyde and dimethoxymethane catalyzed by ion-exchange resin NKC-9. Experiments were conducted in a designed space, namely reaction temperatures (60, 70, and 80°C) vs. reaction times (2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, and 90min), in a batch stirred autoclave. The transient molecular size distribution of PODEn compounds from paraformaldehyde and methylal followed Schulz–Flory distribution model. In this system, the concentration of formaldehyde in the homogenous solution (CF) was nearly constant. The sequential reversible reactions to produce PODEn were verified to follow a second-order kinetics for propagation and a first-order kinetics for depolymerization. The rate constants of propagation (kp) and depolymerization (kd) and the reaction equilibrium constant Kn were the same for the series of PODEn synthesis reactions. Respecting to 5wt% dosage of NKC-9 resin catalyst, the pre-exponential factors Ap for propagation and Ad for depolymerization were 1.84×107Lmol–1min–1 and 5.36×106min–1, respectively. The activation energy Ep (39.52kJmol–1) for propagation was lower than Ed (52.01kJmol–1) for depolymerization, validating that the reversible reactions of producing PODEn compounds were exothermic.
Spray and Combustion Characteristics of Polyoxymethylene Dimethyl Ethers and Diesel Blends in a Constant Volume Chamber

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) are newly appeared promising oxygenated additive which can significantly reduce soot emissions of diesel engines. In this study, the spray and combustion characteristics of the blends of diesel with different PODE blending ratio of 0%, 20%, 50% and 100% by volume are investigated in a constant volume chamber (CVC) under 100 MPa, 120 MPa and 140 MPa injection pressures. The spray results show that liquid spray tip penetration (STP), average spray angle (ASA) and spray projected area (SPA) all decrease with PODE blending ratio under 4 MPa ambient pressure and 573 K ambient temperature. The addition of PODE in diesel can significantly reduce the soot formation and the integrated natural flame luminosity (INFL). Under 100 MPa injection pressure, the time integral sum KL in whole combustion duration of D100, P20, P50 and P100 are namely 107.35, 2.66, 0.27 and 0.08. When the PODE blending ratio are 50% and 100%, nearly no yellow flame can be observed in the combustion duration. The chemical structure of PODE plays an important role in reducing soot formation.
