Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn, CH3O(CH2O)nCH3, where n ≥ 1) are receiving much attention as ideal diesel fuel additives because they can significantly reduce the emission of smoke and engine exhaust during combustion. PODEn are synthesized over acid catalysts. In this work, highly efficient sulfate titania catalysts were prepared by impregnation for the synthesis of PODEn from dimethoxymethane (DMM) and paraformaldehyde (PF). XPS and XRF were used to determine the spatial distribution of S, and NH3-TPD and Pyridine-IR were used to measure acid properties. The concentration of the precursor solution had an important effect on the catalyst activity. The spatial distribution of S influenced the acid properties and catalyst activity. A catalytic mechanism based on Brønsted and Lewis acid sites was proposed, which explained the synergistic effect of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites in the reaction for the first time.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (PODEn) is a clean, effective and promising diesel additive. In this work, acidic sulfonated resin modified by zirconium (Zr4+-SR), which possess both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, was employed to catalyze the synthesis of PODEn from methanol (MeOH) and formaldehyde (FA) solution. The catalysts were investigated by various characterization methods including SEM, BET, XPS, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, Pyridine FT-IR, TG-MS and ICP-OES. It was found that the introduction of Zr4+ into cationic exchange resin formed the Lewis acid sites and improvement of the catalytic performance in PODEn synthesis from methanol and formaldehyde solution was attributed to the synergistic effect of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites. With the increase of zirconium loading, the amount of Lewis acid sites and weak acidity of the Zr4+-SR catalyst increased gradually, and the catalytic activity of the catalysts for the PODEn synthesis reaction exhibited a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. In the methanol and formaldehyde solution, Brønsted acid sites were active for the acetalization of hemiformal and methanol, while Lewis acid sites were conducive to the activation of the methylene glycol. A possible reaction route for the PODEn synthesis from methanol and formaldehyde solution was proposed. 61.1% methanol conversion, 98.7% PODE1–6 and 22.4% PODE3–6 selectivity were achieved under optimal reaction conditions. The reusability investigation of the Zr4+-SR catalyst showed a stable catalytic activity for the synthesis of PODEn from methanol and formaldehyde solution and revealed that the decrease of catalyst activity was attributed to the partial loss of the zirconium.

Abstract:As a kind of excellent diesel-blending component, polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn) have received widespread attention. Herein, Al-SBA-15 molecular sieves with different Si/Al ratios and pore sizes were synthesized and used to investigate the catalytic performance for the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers from methylal and trioxane. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and 27Al NMR were used to characterize the structures of obtained catalysts. Ammonia temperature-programmed desorption and pyridine adsorption were carried out to investigate the acid properties of the catalysts. Through comparison of the catalysts with different Al contents, it was found that the relatively weak acid was more suitable for the synthesis of PODEn than the relatively strong acid in the catalytic system of Al-SBA-15. On the Al-SBA-15(2)-150 catalyst, which has only a weak acid of 0.163 mmol/g, the highest TOX conversion rate and highest PODEn yield and selectivity were achieved, showing the best catalytic performance. It appears that the PODEn synthesis can be catalyzed by not only a Brönsted acid but also a Lewis acid. The catalysts with strong acid and/or with a large number of acids will cause the generation of significant amount of methyl formate byproduct. Through comparison of the catalysts with different pore sizes, it was found that a relative larger pore size of the catalyst was beneficial for the PODEn synthesis to a certain extent under the catalysts with strong acid and/or large acid amount, but on the catalyst that had only weak acid and a relatively lesser amount, the change of pore size had almost no effect on the yield and selectivity of PODEn products.

Abstract:In the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE n ) from formaldehyde (FA) and methanol (MeOH) solution, the methanol conversion and PODE n selectivity are unsatisfactory because the presence of water limits the adsorption of reactants on acid sites and leads to the hydrolysis of some products. Herein, polystyrene-based hybrid solid acids with tunable hydrophobicity and high acid density were synthesized by post-synthesis grafting method in this work. The prepared catalysts were investigated by BET, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and acid-base titration. The results demonstrated that the surface property of the catalyst could be changed from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity with the increase of organic group chain length, which effectively improved methanol conversion and PODE 3-6 selectivity. The correlation between contact angles and turnover frequency (TOF) was investigated, suggesting that the TOF of polystyrene-based hybrid solid acids treated with octadecyl trichlorosilane was 2.0 times higher than that of untreated ones. Moreover, a supposed reaction pathway for the synthesis of PODE n from formaldehyde and methanol was proposed, indicating that the improvement of hydrophobicity promoted the decrease of local water concentration in the catalyst, thus facilitating the stabilization of carbocations.

Abstract:The acetalization reactions of isobutyraldehyde with 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) for the synthesis of 2,4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane were carried out under mild reaction conditions using four water-stable Brønsted-acidic task-specific ionic liquids ([HMIM]BF4, —SO3H functionalized acidic ionic liquid, —COOH functionalized acidic ionic liquid, [NMP][HSO4]) as environmentally benign catalysts for the first time. The process is highly effective and very selective. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid with the two acid sites (IL-3) exhibited the most excellent catalytic performance under mild reaction conditions. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid could be conveniently separated from the product and easily recycled in subsequent runs.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEs) with physical properties similar to those of diesel has received significant attention as green additives for soot emission suppression. Herein, series of SO42-/ZrO2‐TiO2 catalysts were developed for OMEs production from dimethoxymethane (DMM) and 1,3,5-trioxane through sequential formaldehyde monomer insertion into CO bond of DMM. Not Lewis but Brønsted acid sites were identified to be active for the decomposition of 1,3,5-trioxane into formaldehyde unit, however, both of them are effective for the chain propagation of DMM via formaldehyde unit insertion into CO bond. Kinetic studies indicated each chain growth step exhibited the same parameters and activation barrier on corresponding Brønsted and Lewis acid sites due to the same reaction mechanism and very similar chemical structure of OMEs. Also, the catalytic stability investigation suggested the deactivation behavior was derived from the carbon deposition, and the decay factor could be exponentially correlated with the amount of coke accumulation.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) were synthesized from the reaction of paraformaldehyde with dimethoxymethane (DMM) over different acid catalysts at different conditions. Products were found to follow the Schulz-Flory distribution law. The chain propagation proceeds through the insertion of an individual segment of CH2O one by one, while the simultaneous insertion of a few CH2O segments or their assembly is unlikely. Due to the restriction of this law, it is difficult to increase the selectivity to the desired products (e.g., PODE3-4).
Interface Synergy of Exposed Oxygen Vacancy and Pd Lewis Acid Sites Enabling Superior Cooperative Photoredox Synthesis

Abstract:Photo-driven cross-coupling of o-arylenediamines and alcohols has emerged as an alternative for the synthesis of bio-active benzimidazoles. However, tackling the key problem related to efficient adsorption and activation of both coupling partners over photocatalysts towards activity enhancement remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate an efficient interface synergy strategy by coupling exposed oxygen vacancies (VO) and Pd Lewis acid sites for benzimidazole and hydrogen (H2) coproduction over Pd-loaded TiO2 nanospheres with the highest photoredox activity compared to previous works so far. The results show that the introduction of VO optimizes the energy band structure and supplies coordinatively unsaturated sites for adsorbing and activating ethanol molecules, affording acetaldehyde active intermediates. Pd acts as a Lewis acid site, enhancing the adsorption of alkaline amine moleculesvia Lewis acid-base pair interactions and driving the condensation process. Furthermore, VO and Pd synergistically promote interfacial charge transfer and separation. This work offers new insightful guidance for the rational design of semiconductor-based photocatalysts with interface synergy at the molecular level towards the high-performance coproduction of renewable fuels and value-added feedstocks.

Abstract:The change of acidity of catalyst site during the catalytic reaction may enforce great influence on the efficiency of catalyst. Here, the WOx catalyst highly dispersed on surface of SiO2 molecular sieve is synthesized, which is found to possess strong Lewis acidity and great catalytic ability for producing paraxylene through the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction of 2,5-dimethylfuran and ethylene. Based on a comprehensive density functional theory study, we find that the water generated during the reaction can convert the Lewis acid sites into Brønsted acid sites, thereby, turn the Lewis acid catalytic reaction into the Brønsted acid assisted reaction. The kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations reveal that the selectivity of PX relative to the by-product 2,5-hexanedione increases with reaction temperature, which is consistent with the experimental observation. The unravelling of the interconversion of Lewis acid and Brønsted acid gives us new insight of the mechanism of acid-catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Cation exchange resins are widely utilized in polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn) synthesis due to considerable catalytic performance. However, low specific surface area and strong hydrophilicity hinder the generation of long-chain PODEn and industrial applications. Herein, polymer-based solid acids with adjustable textural and hydrophobic properties were prepared by hydrothermal method. Results indicated that the use of tetrahydrofuran and water as solvents in the preparation process resulted in a significant increase in the specific surface area and pore size distribution of the catalysts. Meanwhile, hydrophobic catalysts prepared by copolymerization under optimal solvent exhibited superior performance over commercial resins. Moreover, two reaction pathways for the reaction of hemiformal (HF1, CH3OCH2OH) with formaldehyde and methanol were investigated by DFT calculations. The intermediate formed by combining sulfonic acid group with carbocation is favorable for embedding formaldehyde in HF1 to promote chain growth, while the direct attack of methanol on HF1 is conducive to chain termination.

Abstract:The direct epoxidation of propylene with molecular oxygen represents a desired route for propylene oxide (PO) production with 100% theoretical atomic economy. However, this aerobic epoxidation reaction suffers from the apparent trade-off between propylene conversion and PO selectivity, and remains a key challenge in catalysis. We report that Ti-Beta zeolites containing isolated framework Ti species can efficiently catalyze the aerobic epoxidation of propylene. Stable propylene conversion of 25% and PO selectivity of up to 90% are achieved at the same time, matching the levels of industrial ethylene aerobic epoxidation processes. H-terminated pentacoordinated Ti species in Beta zeolite frameworks are identified as the preferred active sites for propylene aerobic epoxidation and the reaction is initiated by the participation of lattice oxygen in Ti-OH. These results are expected to spark new technology for the industrial production of PO toward more sustainable chemistry and chemical engineering.

Abstract:Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODEn, CH3O(CH2O)nCH3, where n ≥ 1) are environmentally friendly diesel fuel additives because they can significantly reduce the emission of engine exhaust during combustion. It is an efficient way to synthesize PODEn from dimethoxymethane (DMM) and paraformaldehyde (PF) over solid acid catalysts. The synthesis process consisted of two steps: the depolymerization of PF and the polymerization of PODEn. In this work, the first step was proved to be the rate-determining step by analyzing the product distribution and the rate of reactions with and without PF. NKC-9 resins of different size were used to prove that the internal diffusion in catalyst was a key factor to affect the depolymerization process. The SO42−/TiO2 and SO42−/TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts were used to further prove that the catalysts with larger pores were more active for the synthesis of PODEn.

Abstract:Development of a simple and efficient catalytic system is significant for the synthesis of 1,3-diynes in the organic synthesis. Herein, acidic mesoporous ZSM-5 supported Pd catalyst (Pd@MZSM-5) was able to transform terminal alkynes to 1,3-diynes without any additive under oxygen atmosphere. The Brønsted acid sites in Pd@MZSM-5 catalyst could promote the adsorption of alkyne through the interaction of C≡C bond with the hydroxyl group, which benefits the active Pd species bonding with C≡C bond to form alkynyl-palladium(II) complex. This complex was underwent a reductive elimination process to form 1,3-diynes product.

Abstract:In order to probe into the effect of bipodal Ti species on the catalytic performance, the propylene epoxidation with H 2 O 2 over TS-1 catalyst with bipodal Ti site has been studied using an embedded quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach, and the results shown that the bipodal Ti site has strong Brønsted and Lewis acidity, which not only greatly facilitates the epoxidation reaction but also lower selectivity toward the epoxy products. The excellent epoxidation activity is attributed to the Lewis acidity, in which, H 2 O 2 easily activated to generate active intermediates ( i.e. , Ti-η 1 -OOH and Ti-η 2 -OOH) that is facile to transfer O atom to oxidize the propylene. The poor selectivity toward PO is also due to the Lewis acidity, which leads to the stronger adsorption ability of PO and excellent ring-opening ability of Ti-OH nucleophile to PO. The introduction of methoxy (CH3O) group is beneficial for the enhancement of the selectivity of PO, although it enhances the activation free energy for epoxidation to generate PO. The identifications about the relationship of the intrinsic selectivity and activity with bipodal Ti site would provide a clue for designing highly-efficient TS-1 catalysts in propylene epoxidation to PO from the theoretical point of view.

Mechanistic Insight into Propylene Epoxidation with H2O2 over Titanium Silicalite-1: Effects of Zeolite Confinement and Solvent

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the effects of zeolite confinement and solvent on propylene epoxidation with H2O2 over the titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) catalyst. The 144T and 143T cluster models containing typical 10MR channels of TS-1 were constructed to represent the tripodal(2I) and Ti/defect sites. It was found that the confinement of the zeolite pore channel not only impacts the adsorption stability of guest molecules but also alters reaction barriers, as compared to the results obtained based on small cluster models. When dispersion corrections were considered, an enhancement of the adsorption stability of guest molecules was observed because of the important contribution from van der Waals interactions, especially for propylene adsorption. An explicit protic methanol molecule was introduced into the catalytic system to probe the influence of the solvent on propylene epoxidation, based on which a significant enhancement of CH3OH-H2O2 co-adsorption was obtained owing to H-bond formation. More importantly, the energy barrier for H2O2 dissociation was largely reduced by ∼13 kcal/mol because of the participation of the methanol in the H-transfer process and the formation of H-bond network, resulting in an alteration of the rate-limiting step. By comparison, adding an aprotic acetonitrile solvent did not have substantial effect on reaction path and kinetics. The calculation results clearly demonstrate the important role of the protic methanol solvent, which not only strengthens the adsorption of guest molecules but also promotes the kinetics for propylene epoxidation with H2O2 over TS-1 catalyst.

Abstract:Either the ethylene or isobutene-based route for industrial production of methyl methacrylate (MMA) contains the esterification step between methacrylic acid (MAA) and methanol, therefore it is necessary to develop highly active and stable catalyst. Herein, series of superacid catalysts of SO4 2-/TiO2-SiO2 were prepared for esterification of MAA with methanol to produce MMA. The Brønsted and Lewis acid site densities and their ratios in SO4 2-/TiO2-SiO2 could be modulated by controlling the impregnated (NH4)2SO4 concentration, which were identified by pyridine titration and FT-IR. And no changes in structural skeleton and crystal phase of the SO4 2-/TiO2-SiO2 during the acid properties regulation process were noticed with FT-IR and XRD. The cooperative catalytic effects between Brønsted and Lewis acid sites were observed through catalytic evaluation. The kinetic studies indicated the catalytic pathway followed L-H mechanism and the activation barrier of forward esterification (48 kJ/mol) was greater than that of reverse hydrolysis (40 kJ/mol) step.

The introduction of methoxy (CH3O) group is beneficial for the enhancement of the selectivity of PO, although it enhances the activation free energy for epoxidation to generate PO. The identifications about the relationship of the intrinsic selectivity and activity with bipodal Ti site would provide a clue for designing highly-efficient TS-1 catalysts in propylene epoxidation to PO from the theoretical point of view.
