Abstract:The integrated optical chip (IOC) is one of the most critical parts of the interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG). Unfortunately, the integral implementation of the IOC has a number of undesirable effects, which includes the modulation phase error. The inflexible influence of the modulation phase error on the bias error is analyzed in theory. For demonstrating, a method is found to measure the modulation phase error quantitatively. By experiment, the quantized parameter and its effect on bias error are presented. In addition, we offer a practical method to compensate the mentioned effect in IFOG, which is proved by the quantitative measurement. Abstract:The multifunction integrated optical chip (MIOC) is one of the most critical parts of the interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG), and research on the halfwave voltage of the MIOC is meaningful for a high-precision IFOG. In this paper, the correlation between the frequency and halfwave voltage, which affects the interference light intensity of IFOG, is presented theoretically. A widespread measurement method for frequency dependence of the halfwave voltage, based on lock-in amplification and sinusoidal modulation, is proposed. Further, the measurement result and the oscillation of interference light intensity in the Sagnac interferometer are presented, which are in great agreement with the theory. This paper proposes the frequency dependence of the halfwave voltage and provides a new error research direction for the improvement of the MIOC in a high-precision IFOG.

Abstract:An integrated optical chip (IOC) is the phase modulation actuator in a closed-loop interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG). Research on temperature characteristic of IOC is meaningful for high-precision IFOG working in harsh environment. We focus on the temperature modeling of the IOC modulation phase error. In theoretical analysis, based on the temperature dependence of the IOC equivalent capacitance, a model between IOC modulation phase error and temperature is proposed. Through experiments, the variation tendency of the IOC equivalent capacitance with temperature is first presented. Subsequently, the IOC modulation phase error is demonstrated to be linear with temperature, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed model. Abstract:The multifunctional optical integrated circuit (MIOC) is a key component of interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (IFOG), and the phase error in its signal modulation process will inevitably bring output signal error to the IFOG. This article theoretically analyzes and simulates the modulation and output of gyroscopes from the perspective of energy loss caused by MIOC resonance. This article establishes an IFOG testing system and it is found that the fluctuation frequency of the gyroscope output is consistent with the resonance frequency of the MIOC, which proves the correlation between the two. This article also achieves the effect of reducing the output fluctuation of the gyroscope by adjusting the frequency composition of the modulation signal to avoid the resonance frequency of MIOC, which has strong engineering practicality.

Abstract:Many researchers from scientific and industrial fields have devoted their efforts to the laser interferometer, aiming to improve the measurement accuracy and extend the practical applications. Here, we present a modified homodyne laser interferometer based on phase modulation for simultaneously measuring displacement and angle. The active sawtooth wave phase modulation enhances immunity of this interferometer to the environmental fluctuations and laser power drift. Based on polarized optic theory and the sinusoidal measurement retro-reflector, a modified Michelson-type interferometer configuration is designed to simultaneously measure displacement and angle. Phase difference between the reference and measurement interference signals can be obtained using the sawtooth wave phase modulation and zero crossing detection technique, where the real-time displacement and angle values can be derived directly. Experimental results demonstrate our proposed interferometer has good static and dynamic performance.

Abstract:In a sinusoidal phase-modulating interferometer, sinusoidal modulation of the phase of the laser or the reference wave is necessary. However, modulation of the phase also involves an intensity modulation of the light, which leads to a measurement error if conventional signal processing is used. In addition, the error of modulation depth and the phase delay of demodulation also increase the measurement error. A novel signal processing, with ellipse fitting and a correction method, is proposed. Numerical simulation results and experimental results prove that the novel signal processing can compensate for the measurement error caused by the intensity modulation, the error of modulation depth, and the phase delay of demodulation.

Abstract:Modulation error is a main error source of phase-shifting technique in the field of interferometric fiber optic sensing. To solve this problem, a multistep phase-shifting method with modulation error correction capability using rectangular-pulse binary phase modulation is proposed in this paper. In this method, a pair of three-step interference signals are obtained with the $\pi $ /2 phase modulation to generate multistep phase-shifting interference signals. The cross-correlation operation of the two signals with the same phase shift is calculated. Then, precise control of $\pi $ /2 modulation can be realized using simulated annealing algorithm to correct the modulation error. In addition, compared with the three-step phase-shifting algorithm, the extracted five-step phase-shifting algorithm itself has a higher ability to suppress the modulation error. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that this method can be used to demodulate the phase result with high effectiveness and stability, improve the time domain signal and reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD), which provides a novel perspective for high-performance fiber-optic sensing and phase-shifting technique. In the actual experiment, after the calibration of modulation error, THD is effectively reduced from 7.5% to 4.5%. In addition, the method is verified by the demodulation of 200 Hz and 1000 Hz signals. The method also shows excellent repeatability and linearity in demodulation of sensing signals.

Abstract:For the first time, a significant noise source in the resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) called intermodulation induced error is proposed and deeply analyzed in this paper. The intermodulation error is produced by the laser frequency noise at even multiples of the modulation frequency due to an intermodulation effect, which will seriously limit the random noise performance of the RFOG. Experiments are designed and conducted to verify and measure the intermodulation induced error in the RFOG. The experimental results confirm the existence of intermodulation error, and fit well with the theory. As for the design of the RFOG, light sources with a narrow intrinsic linewidth and a high modulation frequency are preferable to achieve a high rotation-rate sensitivity. Abstract:A resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on the reciprocal phase modulation-demodulation technique is proposed and demonstrated. The residual amplitude modulation induced error of the phase modulator, and the effect of laser frequency noise are all suppressed thanks to the reciprocity of the proposed signal processing scheme. Compared with the past separate modulation-demodulation RFOG, the angular random walk is improved by a factor of 15 times from 0.08 degrees/root h to 0.0052 degrees/root h, and the bias stability is improved from 0.3 degrees/h to 0.06 degrees/h. Abstract:The phase modulation and demodulation technique is widely used in resonant optical gyroscopes to accurately detect resonance frequencies, which directly affect gyro sensitivity. In order to overcome the influences of the system phase fluctuations, an in-phase and quadrature (IQ) demodulation technique is introduced for a resonant micro-optic gyroscope (RMOG). The phase fluctuations in the RMOG are measured, and their influence on the demodulation slope at the resonance point is compared between the traditional sinusoidal demodulation and the IQ demodulation both theoretically and experimentally. It can be concluded that the output of the proposed IQ demodulation is not affected by any phase fluctuations. The demodulation slope is always at its maximum value, thus improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the detection system. By using the IQ demodulation technique, a random walk coefficient of 0.5°/√h is carried out. A long-term bias stability of 9°/h is successfully observed, which is improved by a factor of 1.6 compared with that obtained using the traditional phase-sensitive sinusoidal demodulation technique.
Residual Intensity Modulation in Resonator Fiber Optic Gyros with Sinusoidal Wave Phase Modulation

Abstract:We present how residual intensity modulation (RIM) affects the performance of a resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) through a sinusoidal wave phase modulation technique. The expression for the R-FOG system’s demodulation curve under RIM is obtained. Through numerical simulation with different RIM coefficients and modulation frequencies, we find that a zero deviation is induced by the RIM effect on the demodulation curve, and this zero deviation varies with the RIM coefficient and modulation frequency. The expression for the system error due to this zero deviation is derived. Simulation results show that the RIM-induced error varies with the RIM coefficient and modulation frequency. There also exists optimum values for the RIM coefficient and modulation frequency to totally eliminate the RIM-induced error, and the error increases as the RIM coefficient or modulation frequency deviates from its optimum value; however, in practical situations, these two parameters would not be exactly fixed but fluctuate from their respective optimum values, and a large system error is induced even if there exists a very small deviation of these two critical parameters from their optimum values. Simulation results indicate that the RIM-induced error should be considered when designing and evaluating an R-FOG system.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyro(R-FOG) is a novel optical sensor whose resonant frequency is changed due to the Sagnac effect.The detection technique and system noises affect the detection precision greatly.In the R-FOG based on the phase modulation spectroscopy technique,not only the optical power difference between the clockwise(CW) and counterclockwise(CCW) light waves induces the bias drift,but also the two different modulation indexes do.The bias drift caused by optical Kerr effect is indistinguishable from the rotational-induced Sagnac frequency shift.Using the optical field overlapping method,the analytical expression for the rotation-rate error due to the optical Kerr effect is derived.For the bias drift caused by the optical Kerr effect does not change with the rotation-rate,using a simple open-loop operation,the drift caused by the optical Kerr effect is observed in the gyro output curve.

Abstract:The effect of optical phase modulation instability on the scale factor (SF) in Sagnac interferometer-type optic-fiber current sensor (OCS) is theoretically analyzed in this letter. The inherent temperature dependence of the optical phase modulation and the drive signal noise are the main reasons of increasing SF error. By means of employing calibration process and feedback configuration in modulation depth of the optical phase modulator, the SF error is improved within the range of 1%, verifying the class 0.5 S, which successfully inhibits the effects of those disturbances.

Abstract:Recent trends of interferometric wavefront sensing tend to focus on high precision, anti-vibration, compact, along with much more involved of electric and computer technology. And the optical principles employed not only limit to interference but also include diffraction, scattering, polarization, etc. In this paper, some selected examples basing on the research works in our group will be given to illustrate the trends mentioned above. To achieve extra high accuracy, phase-shifting point diffraction interferometry (PS-PDI) is believed to be a good candidate as it employs a nearly perfect point diffraction spherical wavefront as the reference and also takes advantage of the high precision of phase-shifting algorithms. Cyclic radial shearing interferometry (C-RSI) successively demonstrate the anti-vibration characteristic and can diagnose transient wavefront with only one single shot by employing a three-mirror common-path configuration and a synchronizing system. In contrast sharply with those early interferometers, interferometers with very compact configuration are more suitable to develop portable wavefront sensing instruments. Cross-grating lateral shearing interferometer (CG-LSI) is a very compact interferometer that adopts a cross-grating of millimeters to produce lateral shearing of the diffraction wave of the test wavefront. Be aware that, computer technique has been used a lot in all of the above interferometers but the non-null annual sub-aperture stitching interferometer (NASSI) for general aspheric surface testing mostly relies on the computer model of the physical interferometer setup and iterative ray-tracing optimization. The principles of the above mentioned interferometric wavefront sensing methods would be given in detail.

Abstract:Quantum information processing with geometric features of quantum states may provide promising noise-resilient schemes for quantum metrology. In this work, we theoretically explore phase-space geometric Sagnac interferometers with trapped atomic clocks for rotation sensing, which could be intrinsically robust to certain decoherence noises and reach high precision. With the wave guide provided by sweeping ring-traps, we give criteria under which the well-known Sagnac phase is a pure or unconventional geometric phase with respect to the phase space. Furthermore, corresponding schemes for geometric Sagnac interferometers with designed sweeping angular velocity and interrogation time are presented, and the experimental feasibility is also discussed. Such geometric Sagnac interferometers are capable of saturating the ultimate precision limit given by the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound.
Residuary Intensity Modulation of the Phase Modulator in IFOG and Its Measurement

Abstract:The effect of the Residuary Intensity Modulation (RIM) of the phase modulators on Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyroscope (IFOG) was reasoned out by the deduction of interference signal with sin wave modulation of IFOG in open loop operation. It is pointed out that the RIM can generate signal bias or increase noise in the case of the variation of either the modulation frequency or the transition time of the light in the fiber loop. For 0.01 degree per hour of the high-resolution IFOGs, the allowable max RIM value is 13ppm in a typical calculation. As for 0.1 degree per hour IFOGs, the requirement of RIM value is below 81ppm in another typical condition. The precise measurement method of the RIM value with a phase lock amplifier was proposed and applied on a homemade phase modulator. Its RIM value meets the requirements of middle-resolution IFOG.

In this work, we study a new type of non-reciprocity existed in optical fiber Sagnac interferometer where the polarization dependent loss is taken into consideration. In particular, this non-reciprocity is irrelevant to the physical effects that being considered in previous studies, which originates from the geometric phases induced by continuous-weak-measurement. In consequence, it has a unique phenomenon of sudden phase transition, which may open a new way for the future design of high precision optical fiber sensors.

Abstract:In fiber-optic interferometers with laser frequency modulation, carrier phase delay and accompanied optical intensity modulation (AOIM) in phase-generated-carrier (PGC) demodulation inevitably produce nonlinear errors that can seriously hamper displacement measurement accuracy. As for the existing improved PGC scheme, they are only capable to compensate for one of these effects. As the only method that is effective in eliminating the two effects simultaneously, typical ellipse fitting methods require target movements lambda(laser)/4, and fail when the PGC carrier phase delay is proximate to certain values (e.g., n pi +pi/4, n pi +pi/2). Herein, a modified nonlinear-error correction method for errors due to PGC carrier phase delay and AOIM is proposed. Active laser-wavelength scanning by constant variation of the laser drive temperature is used to replace the target movement. A fiber-optic Michelson interferometer is constructed and experiments are performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The experimental results show that after correction, the nonlinear error is reduced to less than 1 nm, and nanoscale displacement measurement is achieved. Abstract:We propose the modulation period and amplitude of the typical square wave phase bias modulation (SWPBM) applicable to a resonator-based interferometric fiber-optic gyroscope (R-IFOG) and theoretically study the performance of the R-IFOG under SWPBM. Under SWPBM of the proposed modulation period and amplitude, the R-IFOG possesses a performance distinct from that under the hypothetical time-independent phase bias. Also, the sensitivity of the R-IFOG with SWPBM to a slow rotation rate is boosted in comparison to that without phase bias, and the rotation direction can be indicated. Furthermore, the ultrahigh sensitivity can be attained by an R-IFOG of an extremely short fiber length when the R-IFOG with SWPBM consists of a high finesse resonator. Therefore, the SWPBM of the proposed modulation period and amplitude enables highly sensitive and compact integrated closed-loop R-IFOGs.
