Abstract:Microdisk resonators (MDRs) have emerged as promising elements in silicon photonic systems due to their small mode volume, high-quality factor, and ease of fabrication. Although MDRs can support multiple radial mode transmissions, this can result in crosstalk and loss between modes, thereby hindering improvements in device performance and scalability of the array. This paper presents an innovative approach to leverage an MDR for scalable and reconfigurable photonic memory, achieved by overlaying an optical phase change material (PCM), Ge 2 Sb 2 Se 4 Te 1 (GSST). By carefully selecting the appropriate coupling gap for the wrapped waveguide and ensuring phase matching with the resonator mode, the high-order modes of the MDR are considerably suppressed. The suppression ratios of the first and second modes reached an impressive 15.20 dB. The GSST-based MDR memory at 1555.65 nm exhibits an insertion loss (IL) of 0.63 dB and an extinction ratio (ER) of 17.90 dB at the through port, and 2.03 dB and 13.62 dB, respectively, at the drop port. The write and erase operations can be performed using Gaussian laser pulses of 66 ns-15 mW and 20 ns-35 mW, respectively. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates the potential use of this proposed optical memory in directed logic operations. By applying detection pulses of varying wavelengths, AND, OR, NAND, and NOR logic functions were successfully implemented, showing high extinction ratios (over 10 dB) and promising scalability. This device paves the way for the practical design of compact, non-volatile photonic integrated circuits beneficial for memory array applications in the future.
