Abstract:We define the notion of the generic state polytope, analogous to the generic initial ideal and prove its existence: This greatly generalizes the work of Römer and Schmitz who proved the existence of generic Gröber fans. We also show that a generic state polytope always contains the trivial character: Equivalently, in any GIT quotient problem of semisimple group representations, every point is semistable with respect to a {\it general} maximal torus. Also, we revisit Kempf's proof of the existence of the worst one parameter subgroup (1-ps) and describe the equations for determining the worst 1-ps.

Abstract:We consider faithful actions of simple algebraic groups on self-dual irreducible modules, and on the associated varieties of totally singular subspaces, under the assumption that the dimension of the group is at least as large as the dimension of the variety. We prove that in all but a finite list of cases, there is a dense open subset where the stabilizer of any point is conjugate to a fixed subgroup, called the generic stabilizer. We use these results to determine whether there exists a dense orbit. This in turn lets us complete the answer to the problem of determining all pairs of maximal connected subgroups of a classical group with a dense double coset.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a henselian valued field with ${\cal O}_K$ its valuation ring, $\Gamma$ its value group, and $\boldsymbol{k}$ its residue field. We study the definable subsets of ${\cal O}_K$ and algebraic groups definable over ${\cal O}_K$ in the case where $\boldsymbol{k}$ is algebraically closed and $\Gamma$ is a $\mathbb Z$-group. We first describe the definable subsets of ${\cal O}_K$, showing that every definable subset of ${\cal O}_K$ is either res-finite or res-cofinite (see Definition \ref{def-res-finite-cofinite}). Applying this result, we show that $\mathrm{GL}(n,{\cal O}_K)$ (the invertible $n$ by $n$ matrices over ${\cal O}_K$) are generically stable for each $n$, generalizing Y. Halevi's result, where $K$ is an algebraically closed valued field \cite{Y.Halevi}.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a closed highly homogeneous subgroup of $S_{\infty}$ not involving circular orderings. We show that the closure of a conjugacy class from $G$ contains a conjugacy class which is comeagre in it. Furthermore, we show that the family of finite partial maps extendable to elements of this conjugacy class has the cofinal amalgamation property. Similar statements are proved for automorphisms of typical ultrahomogeneous partial orderings.

Abstract:We study generic properties of topological groups in the sense of Baire category. First, we investigate countably infinite groups. We extend a classical result of B. H. Neumann, H. Simmons and A. Macintyre on algebraically closed groups and the word problem. Recently, I. Goldbring, S. Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, and Y. Lodha proved that every isomorphism class is meager among countably infinite groups. In contrast, it follows from the work of W. Hodges on model-theoretic forcing that there exists a comeager isomorphism class among countably infinite abelian groups. We present a new elementary proof of this result. Then, we turn to compact metrizable abelian groups. We use Pontryagin duality to show that there is a comeager isomorphism class among compact metrizable abelian groups. We discuss its connections to the countably infinite case. Finally, we study compact metrizable groups. We prove that the generic compact metrizable group is neither connected nor totally disconnected; also it is neither torsion-free nor a torsion group.

Abstract:A group G is said to be m-rigid if it contains a normal series of the form G = G 1 > G 2 > . . . > G m > G m+ 1 = 1, whose quotients G i / G i+ 1 are Abelian and, treated as (right) Z[ G / G i ]-modules, are torsion-free. A rigid group G is said to be divisible if elements of the quotient ρ i ( G )/ ρ i+ 1 ( G ) are divisible by nonzero elements of the ring Z[ G / ρ i ( G )]. Previously, it was proved that the theory of divisible m-rigid groups is complete and ω-stable. In the present paper, we give an algebraic description of elements and types that are generic over a divisible m-rigid group G .

Abstract:Let $G$ be an absolutely almost simple algebraic group over a field $K$. The genus ${\bf gen}_K(G)$ of $G$ is the set of $K$-isomorphism classes of $K$-forms $G'$ of $G$ that have the same $K$-isomorphism classes of maximal $K$-tori as $G$. We construct an example of outer forms of type $A_2$ with infinite genus.

Abstract:We prove that the universal solenoid is the generic (in the sense of Baire category) connected compact metrizable abelian group. We also settle the dual problem in the sense of Pontryagin duality: $(\mathbb{Q},+)$, which is the dual of the universal solenoid, is the generic countably infinite torsion-free abelian group.

Abstract:Groups definable in simple theories retain the chain conditions and decomposition properties known from stable groups, up to commensurability. In the small case, if a generic type of G is not foreign to some type q, there is a q-internal quotient. In the supersimple case, the Berline-Lascar decomposition works. One-based simple groups are finite-by-abelian-by-finite.

Abstract:This is an extended and corrected version of the author's Diplomarbeit. A class of algebras called generic pro-$p$ Hecke algebras is introduced, enlarging the class of generic Hecke algebras by considering certain extensions of (extended) Coxeter groups. Examples of generic pro-$p$ Hecke algebras are given by pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke algebras and Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. The notion of an orientation of a Coxeter group is introduced and used to define `Bernstein maps' intimately related to Bernstein's presentation and to Cherednik's cocycle. It is shown that certain relations in the Hecke algebra hold true, equivalent to Bernstein's relations in the case of Iwahori-Hecke algebras. For a certain subclass called affine pro-$p$ Hecke algebras, containing Iwahori-Hecke and pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke algebras, an explicit canonical and integral basis of the center is constructed and finiteness results are proved about the center and the module-structure of the algebra over its center, recovering results of Bernstein-Zelevinsky-Lusztig and Vignéras.

Abstract:We study general nilpotent algebras. The results obtained are new even for the classical algebras, such as associative or Lie algebras. We single out certain generic properties of finite-dimensional algebras, mostly over infinite fields. The notion of being generic in the class of $n$-generated algebras of an arbitrary primitive class of $c$-nilpotent algebras appears naturally in the following way. On the set of the isomorphism classes of such algebras one can introduce the structure of an algebraic variety. As a result, the subsets are endowed with the dimensions as algebraic varieties. A subset $Y$ of a set $X$ of lesser dimension can be viewed as negligible in $X$. For example, if $n\gg c$, we determine that an automorphism group of a generic algebra $P$ consists of the automorphisms, which are scalar modulo $P^2$. Generic ideals are in $I(P)$, the annihilator of $P$. In the case of classical nilpotent algebras as above, the generic algebras are graded by the degrees with respect to some generating sets.

On the genera of semisimple groups defined over an integral domain of a global function field

Abstract:Let $K=\mathbb{F}_q(C)$ be the global function field of rational functions over a smooth and projective curve $C$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The ring of regular functions on $C-S$ where $S \neq \emptyset$ is any finite set of closed points on $C$ is a Dedekind domain $\mathcal{O}_S$ of $K$. For a semisimple $\mathcal{O}_S$-group $\underline{G}$ with a smooth fundamental group $\underline{F}$, we aim to describe both the set of genera of $\underline{G}$ and its principal genus (the latter if $\underline{G} \otimes_{\mathcal{O}_S} K$ is isotropic at $S$) in terms of abelian groups depending on $\mathcal{O}_S$ and $\underline{F}$ only. This leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse local-global principle to hold for certain $\underline{G}$. We also use it to express the Tamagawa number $\tau(G)$ of a semisimple $K$-group $G$ by the Euler Poincaré invariant. This facilitates the computation of $\tau(G)$ for twisted $K$-groups.
