Abstract:We generalize Hrushovski's group configuration theorem to the case where the type of the configuration is generically stable, without assuming tameness of the ambient theory. The properties of generically stable types, which we recall in the first section, enable us to adapt the proof known in the stable context.

Abstract:We define the notion of the generic state polytope, analogous to the generic initial ideal and prove its existence: This greatly generalizes the work of Römer and Schmitz who proved the existence of generic Gröber fans. We also show that a generic state polytope always contains the trivial character: Equivalently, in any GIT quotient problem of semisimple group representations, every point is semistable with respect to a {\it general} maximal torus. Also, we revisit Kempf's proof of the existence of the worst one parameter subgroup (1-ps) and describe the equations for determining the worst 1-ps.

Abstract:Groups definable in simple theories retain the chain conditions and decomposition properties known from stable groups, up to commensurability. In the small case, if a generic type of G is not foreign to some type q, there is a q-internal quotient. In the supersimple case, the Berline-Lascar decomposition works. Abstract:We prove a structure theorem for stable functions on amenable groups, which extends the arithmetic regularity lemma for stable subsets of finite groups. Given a group $G$, a function $f\colon G\to [-1,1]$ is called stable if the binary function $f(x\cdot y)$ is stable in the sense of continuous logic. Roughly speaking, our main result says that if $G$ is amenable, then any stable function on $G$ is almost constant on all translates of a unitary Bohr neighborhood in $G$ of bounded complexity. The proof uses ingredients from topological dynamics and continuous model theory. We also prove several applications which generalize results in arithmetic combinatorics to nonabelian groups.

Abstract:We extend previous work on Hrushovski's stabilizer's theorem and prove a measure-theoretic version of a well-known result of Pillay-Scanlon-Wagner on products of three types. This generalizes results of Gowers on products of three sets and yields model-theoretic proofs of existing asymptotic results for quasirandom groups. We also obtain a model-theoretic proof of Roth's theorem on the existence of arithmetic progressions of length $3$ for subsets of positive density in suitable definably amenable groups, such as countable amenable abelian groups without involutions and ultraproducts of finite abelian groups of odd order.

Homological stability for general linear groups over Dedekind domains

Abstract:We prove a new kind of homological stability theorem for automorphism groups of finitely-generated projective modules over Dedekind domains, which takes into account all possible stabilisation maps between these, rather than only stabilisation by the free module of rank 1. We show the same kind of stability holds for Clausen and Jansen's reductive Borel--Serre spaces.

Abstract:We prove a representation stability result for the second homology groups of Torelli subgroups of mapping class groups and automorphism groups of free groups. This strengthens the results of Boldsen-Hauge Dollerup and Day-Putman. We also prove a new representation stability result for the homology of certain congruence subgroups, partially improving upon the work of Putman-Sam. These results follow from a general theorem on syzygies of certain modules with finite polynomial degree.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a henselian valued field with ${\cal O}_K$ its valuation ring, $\Gamma$ its value group, and $\boldsymbol{k}$ its residue field. We study the definable subsets of ${\cal O}_K$ and algebraic groups definable over ${\cal O}_K$ in the case where $\boldsymbol{k}$ is algebraically closed and $\Gamma$ is a $\mathbb Z$-group. We first describe the definable subsets of ${\cal O}_K$, showing that every definable subset of ${\cal O}_K$ is either res-finite or res-cofinite (see Definition \ref{def-res-finite-cofinite}). Applying this result, we show that $\mathrm{GL}(n,{\cal O}_K)$ (the invertible $n$ by $n$ matrices over ${\cal O}_K$) are generically stable for each $n$, generalizing Y. Halevi's result, where $K$ is an algebraically closed valued field \cite{Y.Halevi}.

Abstract:We prove a homological stability theorem for families of discrete groups (e.g. mapping class groups, automorphism groups of free groups, braid groups) with coefficients in a sequence of irreducible algebraic representations of arithmetic groups. The novelty is that the stable range is independent of the choice of representation. Combined with earlier work of Bergström--Diaconu--Petersen--Westerland this proves the Conrey--Farmer--Keating--Rubinstein--Snaith predictions for all moments of the family of quadratic $L$-functions over function fields, for sufficiently large odd prime powers.

Abstract:In this work we construct a compactly generated tensor-triangulated stable category for a large class of infinite groups, including those in Kropholler's hierarchy $\mathrm{LH}\mathfrak{F}$. This can be constructed as the homotopy category of a certain model category structure, which we show is Quillen equivalent to several other model categories, including those constructed by Bravo, Gillespie, and Hovey in their work on stable module categories for general rings. We also investigate the compact objects in this category. In particular, we give a characterisation of those groups of finite global Gorenstein AC-projective dimension such that the trivial representation $\mathbb{Z}$ is compact.

Abstract:In this short note we prove a local version of Philip Hall's theorem on the nilpotency of the stability group of a chain of subgroups by only using elementary commutator calculus (Hall's theorem is a direct consequence of our result). Abstract:McDuff and Segal proved that unordered configuration spaces of open manifolds satisfy homological stability: there is a stabilization map $\sigma: C_n(M)\to C_{n+1}(M)$ which is an isomorphism on $H_d(-;\mathbb{Z})$ for $n\gg d$. For a finite group $G$ and an open $G$-manifold $M$, under some hypotheses we define a family of equivariant stabilization maps $\sigma_{G/H}:C_n(M)\to C_{n+|G/H|}(M)$ for $H\leq G$. In general, these do not induce stability for Bredon homology, the equivariant analogue of singular homology. Instead, we show that each $\sigma_{G/H}$ induces isomorphisms on the ordinary homology of the fixed points of $C_n(M)$, and if the group is Dedekind (e.g. abelian), we obtain the following Bredon homological stability statement: $H^G_d(\bigsqcup_{n\geq 0}C_n(M))$ is finitely generated over $\mathbb{Z}[\sigma_{G/H} : H\leq G]$. This reduces to the classical statement when $G=e$.

Delooping generated groups in homotopy type theory

Abstract:Homotopy type theory is a logical setting based on Martin-Löf type theory in which one can perform geometric constructions and proofs in a synthetic way. Namely, types can be interpreted as spaces (up to continuous deformation) and proofs as homotopy invariant constructions. In this context, the loop spaces of types with a distinguished element (more precisely, pointed connected groupoids), provide a natural representation of groups, what we call here internal groups. The construction which internalizes a given group is called delooping, because it is a formal inverse to the loop space operator. As we recall in the article, this delooping operation has a concrete definition for any group G given by the type of G-torsors. Those are particular sets together with an action of G, which means that they come equipped with an endomorphism for every element of G. We show that, when a generating set is known for the group, we can construct a smaller representation of the type of G-torsors, using the fact that we only need automorphisms for the elements of the generating set. We thus obtain a concise definition of (internal) groups in homotopy type theory, which can be useful to define deloopings without resorting to higher inductive types, or to perform computations on those. We also investigate an abstract construction for the Cayley group of a generated group. Most of the developments performed in the article have been formalized using the cubical version of the Agda proof assistant.

Characterizations of Stability via Morse Limit Sets

Abstract:Subgroup stability is a strong notion of quasiconvexity that generalizes convex cocompactness in a variety of settings. In this paper, we characterize stability of a subgroup by properties of its limit set on the Morse boundary. Given $H<G$, both finitely generated, $H$ is stable exactly when all the limit points of $H$ are conical, or equivalently when all the limit points of $H$ are horospherical, as long as the limit set of $H$ is a compact subset of the Morse boundary for $G$.

For example, the well-known Jordan-Hölder type theorem for chief series of finite groups has been rather useful in studying the structure of finite groups. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to generalize and improve two of the main model-theoretic results of "Stable group theory and approximate subgroups" by E. Hrushovski to the context of piecewise hyperdefinable sets. The first one is the existence of Lie models. The second one is the stabilizer theorem. In the process, a systematic study of the structure of piecewise hyperdefinable sets is developed. In particular, we show the most significant properties of their logic topologies.
