Abstract:For simple theories with a strong version of amalgamation we obtain the canonical hyperdefinable group from the group configuration. This provides a generalization to simple theories of the group configuration theorem for stable theories.

Abstract:We show that an infinite group G definable in a -h-minimal field admits a strictly K-differentiable structure with respect to which G is a (weak) Lie group, and we show that definable local subgroups sharing the same Lie algebra have the same germ at the identity. We conclude that infinite fields definable in K are definably isomorphic to finite extensions of K and that -dimensional groups definable in K are finite-by-abelian-by-finite. Along the way, we develop the basic theory of definable weak K-manifolds and definable morphisms between them.

Abstract:The group $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ is obtained from $G\ast G$ by forcing each element $g$ in the first free factor to commute with the copy of $g$ in the second free factor. We make significant additions to the list of properties that the functor $\mathfrak{X}$ is known to preserve. We also investigate the geometry and complexity of the word problem for $\mathfrak{X}(G)$. Subtle features of $\mathfrak{X}$ are encoded in a normal abelian subgroup $W<\mathfrak{X}(G)$ that is a module over $\mathbb{Z} Q$, where $Q= H_1(G,\mathbb{Z})$. We establish a structural result for this module and illustrate its utility by proving that $\mathfrak{X}$ preserves virtual nilpotence, the Engel condition, and growth type -- polynomial, exponential, or intermediate. We also use it to establish isoperimetric inequalities for $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ when $G$ lies in a class that includes Thompson's group $F$ and all non-fibered Kähler groups. The word problem is solvable in $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ if and only if it is solvable in $G$. The Dehn function of $\mathfrak{X}(G)$ is bounded below by a cubic polynomial if $G$ maps onto a non-abelian free group.

Abstract:Abstract We continue our study from Peterzil et al. (2022, Preprint , arXiv:2208.08293) of finite-dimensional definable groups in models of the theory $T_{\partial }$ , the model companion of an o-minimal ${\mathcal {L}}$ -theory T expanded by a generic derivation $\partial $ as in Fornasiero and Kaplan (2021, Journal of Mathematical Logic 21, 2150007). We generalize Buium’s notion of an algebraic D -group to ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable D -groups, namely $(G,s)$ , where G is an ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable group in a model of T , and $s:G\to \tau (G)$ is an ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable group section. Our main theorem says that every definable group of finite dimension in a model of $T_\partial $ is definably isomorphic to a group of the form $$ \begin{align*}(G,s)^\partial=\{g\in G:s(g)=\nabla g\},\end{align*} $$ for some ${\mathcal {L}}$ -definable D -group $(G,s)$ (where $\nabla (g)=(g,\partial g)$ ). We obtain analogous results when T is either the theory of p -adically closed fields or the theory of pseudo-finite fields of characteristic $0$ .

Abstract:In 1971 J. Stallings introduced a generalisation of amalgamated products of groups -- called a pregroup, which is a particular kind of a partial group. He defined the universal group U(P) of a pregroup P to be a universal object (in the sense of category theory) extending the partial operations on P to group operations on U(P). This turns out to be a versatile and convenient generalisation of classical group constructions: HNN-extensions and amalgamated products. In this respect the following general question arises. Which properties of pregroups, or relations between pregroups, carry over to the respective universal groups? In this paper it is proved that universal equivalence of pregroups extends to universal equivalence of universal groups. Applications to free products with amalgamation and HNN-extensions are then described.

Abstract:Groups definable in simple theories retain the chain conditions and decomposition properties known from stable groups, up to commensurability. In the small case, if a generic type of G is not foreign to some type q, there is a q-internal quotient. In the supersimple case, the Berline-Lascar decomposition works. One-based simple groups are finite-by-abelian-by-finite.

When are Duality Defects Group-Theoretical?

Abstract:A quantum field theory with a finite abelian symmetry $G$ may be equipped with a non-invertible duality defect associated with gauging $G$. For certain $G$, duality defects admit an alternative construction where one starts with invertible symmetries with certain 't Hooft anomaly, and gauging a non-anomalous subgroup. This special type of duality defects are termed group theoretical. In this work, we determine when duality defects are group theoretical, among $G=\mathbb{Z}_N^{(0)}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_N^{(1)}$ in $2$d and 4d quantum field theories, respectively. A duality defect is group theoretical if and only if its Symmetry TFT is a Dijkgraaf-Witten theory, and we argue that this is equivalent to a certain stability condition of the topological boundary conditions of the $G$ gauge theory. By solving the stability condition, we find that a $\mathbb{Z}_N^{(0)}$ duality defect in 2d is group theoretical if and only if $N$ is a perfect square, and under certain assumptions a $\mathbb{Z}_N^{(1)}$ duality defect in 4d is group theoretical if and only if $N=L^2 M$ where $-1$ is a quadratic residue of $M$. For these subset of $N$, we construct explicit topological manipulations that map the non-invertible duality defects to invertible defects. We also comment on the connection between our results and the recent discussion of obstruction to duality-preserving gapped phases.

Abstract:Given a finite group G, a central subgroup H of G, and an operator space X equipped with an action of H by complete isometries, we construct an operator space $X_G$ equipped with an action of G which is unique under a `reasonable' condition. This generalizes the operator space complexification $X_c$ of $X$. As a linear space $X_G$ is the space obtained from inducing the representation of H to G (in the sense of Frobenius).

Abstract:Stern-Gerlach experiment is a paradigm of measurement theory in quantum mechanics. Notwithstanding several analysis given in literature, no clear understanding of the apparent collapse has been given so far. Indeed, one can imagine a Stern-Gerlach device where all environmental effects are removed and ask the question on how the measurement goes on. In this letter we will prove that a the Stern-Gerlach device behaves as a true measurement apparatus, as expected by the Copenaghen interpretation, by the Ehrenfest theorem. In this way we recover, by other means, a limit on the Stern-Gerlach device, given by Bohm, based on scrambling of phases due to a large oscillation frequency.

Abstract:We state conditions for which a definable local homomorphism between two locally definable groups G , G′ can be uniquely extended when G is simply connected (Theorem 2.1). As an application of this result we obtain an easy proof of [3, Theorem 9.1] (cf. Corollary 2.3). We also prove that [3, Theorem 10.2] also holds for any definably connected definably compact semialgebraic group G not necessarily abelian over a sufficiently saturated real closed field R ; namely, that the o‐minimal universal covering group G∼ of G is an open locally definable subgroup of H(R)0∼ for some R ‐algebraic group H (Theorem 3.3). Finally, for an abelian definably connected semialgebraic group G over R , we describe G∼ as a locally definable extension of subgroups of the o‐minimal universal covering groups of commutative R ‐algebraic groups (Theorem 3.4).

Hyperbolic actions of Thompson's group $F$ and generalizations

Abstract:We study the poset of hyperbolic structures on Thompson's group $F$ and its generalizations $F_n$ for $n \geq 2$. The global structure of this poset is as simple as one would expect, with the maximal non-elementary elements being two quasi-parabolic actions corresponding to well-known ascending HNN-extension expressions of $F_n$. However, the local structure turns out to be incredibly rich, in stark contrast with the situation for the $T$ and $V$ counterparts. We show that the subposet of quasi-parabolic hyperbolic structures consists of two isomorphic posets, each of which contains uncountably many subposets of \emph{lamplike} structures, which can be described combinatorially in terms of certain hyperbolic structures on related lamplighter groups. Moreover, each of these subposets, as well as intersections and complements thereof, is very large, in that it contains a copy of the power set of the natural numbers. We also prove that these uncountably many uncountable subposets are not the entire picture, indeed there exists a copy of the power set of the natural numbers consisting entirely of non-lamplike structures. We also prove that this entire vast array of hyperbolic structures on $F_n$ collapses as soon as one takes a natural semidirect product with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. These results are all proved via a detailed analysis of confining subsets, and along the way we establish a number of fundamental results in the theory of confining subsets of groups.

Compact Hypergroups from Discrete Subfactors

Abstract:Conformal inclusions of chiral conformal field theories, or more generally inclusions of quantum field theories, are described in the von Neumann algebraic setting by nets of subfactors, possibly with infinite Jones index if one takes non-rational theories into account. With this situation in mind, we study in a purely subfactor theoretical context a certain class of braided discrete subfactors with an additional commutativity constraint, that we call locality, and which corresponds to the commutation relations between field operators at space-like distance in quantum field theory. Examples of subfactors of this type come from taking a minimal action of a compact group on a factor and considering the fixed point subalgebra. We show that to every irreducible local discrete subfactor $\mathcal{N}\subset\mathcal{M}$ of type ${I\!I\!I}$ there is an associated canonical compact hypergroup (an invariant for the subfactor) which acts on $\mathcal{M}$ by unital completely positive (ucp) maps and which gives $\mathcal{N}$ as fixed points. To show this, we establish a duality pairing between the set of all $\mathcal{N}$-bimodular ucp maps on $\mathcal{M}$ and a certain commutative unital $C^*$-algebra, whose spectrum we identify with the compact hypergroup. If the subfactor has depth 2, the compact hypergroup turns out to be a compact group. This rules out the occurrence of compact \emph{quantum} groups acting as global gauge symmetries in local conformal field theory.

Abstract:Wise's Quasiconvex Hierarchy Theorem classifying hyperbolic virtually compact special groups in terms of quasiconvex hierarchies played an essential role in Agol's proof of the Virtual Haken Conjecture. Answering a question of Wise, we construct a new virtual quasiconvex hierarchy for relatively hyperbolic virtually compact special groups. We use this hierarchy to prove a generalization of Wise's Malnormal Special Quotient Theorem for relatively hyperbolic virtually compact special groups with arbitrary peripheral subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Along the way it brings new combinatorics to the theory, but our diagrams represent true submanifolds of configuration spaces and combinatorial relations between them translate actual twisted homological relations.

Abstract:We give a simple construction of Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter groups of arbitrarily large virtual cohomological dimension. Our construction provides new examples of such groups. Using this one can construct e.g. new groups having some interesting asphericity properties.

Abstract:We present a general framework to represent discrete configuration systems using hypergraphs. This representation allows one to transfer combinatorial removal lemmas to their analogues for configuration systems. These removal lemmas claim that a system without many configurations can be made configuration-free by removing a few of its constituent elements. As applications of this approach we give, an alternative proof of the removal lemma for permutations by Cooper, a general version of a removal lemma for linear systems in finite abelian groups, an interpretation of the mentioned removal lemma in terms of subgroups, and an alternative proof of the counting version of the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem in abelian groups with generalizations.

Abstract:Let H be a differential graded Hopf algebra over a field k. This paper gives an explicit construction of a triple cochain complex that defines the Hochschild-Cartier cohomology of H. A certain truncation of this complex is the appropriate setting for deforming H as an H(q)-structure. The direct limit of all such truncations is the appropriate setting for deforming H as a strongly homotopy associative structure. Sign complications are systematically controlled. The connection between rational perturbation theory and the deformation theory of certain free commutative differential graded algebras is clarified.
