Abstract:In this paper we study (logical) types and isotypical equivalence of torsion free Abelian groups. We describe all possible types of elements and standard 2-tuples of elements in these groups and classify separable torsion free Abelian groups up to isotypicity.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of torsion-simple objects in an abelian category: these are the objects which are always either torsion or torsion-free with respect to any torsion pair. We present some general results concerning their properties, and then proceed to investigate the notion in various contexts, such as the category of modules over an artin algebra or a commutative noetherian ring, and the category of quasi-coherent sheaves over the projective line.

Abstract:By extending type theory with a universe of definitionally associative and unital polynomial monads, we show how to arrive at a definition of opetopic type which is able to encode a number of fully coherent algebraic structures. In particular, our approach leads to a definition of $\infty$-groupoid internal to type theory and we prove that the type of such $\infty$-groupoids is equivalent to the universe of types. That is, every type admits the structure of an $\infty$-groupoid internally, and this structure is unique.

Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .
Isotypical equivalence of periodic Abelian groups

Abstract:In this paper we give invariants that characterize isotypically equivalent Abelian periodic groups. Also, we describe types of standart tuples of elements in these groups. As the particular case we prove that two Abelian $p$-groups with separable reduced parts are isotypically equivalent if and only if their divisible parts and their basic subgroups are elementarily equivalent. Also as a corollary we prove that any Abelian $p$-group with a separable reduced part is $\omega$-strongly homogeneous.

Abstract:It has been proved in [5] that the collection of all torsion classes over a finite-dimensional algebra is always a completely semidistributive lattice. In the present paper, we considered the semimodularity and distributivity of the collection of (functorially finite) torsion classes. Abstract:Torsion theories are a pinnacle in the theory of abelian categories. They are a generalization of torsion abelian groups and in this generalization one of the most studied is that whose torsionfree class consists of nonsingular modules. To introduce the concept of singular interval we use the symmetric idea of torsion theories, that is the torsion class determines the torsionfree class and vice-versa, thus to introduce nonsingular intervals over an upper-continuous modular complete lattice, (a.k.a idiom, a.k.a modular preframe) we define the concept of \emph{division free} set. We introduce the division free set of nonsingular intervals which defines a division set of singular intervals in a canonical way. Several properties of division free sets and some consequences of nonsingular intervals are explored allowing us to develop a small part of a point-free nonsingular theory.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the possible torsion subgroups of twists of abelian varieties with good reduction. As an application, we prove a theorem concerning ramified primes over any quadratic extension where odd-order torsion growth is achieved. In particular, we show that for every rational elliptic curve and every imaginary quadratic field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ satisfying the Heegner hypothesis no odd-order torsion growth can occur.

Abstract:Let $C,A$ be countable abelian groups. In this paper we determine the complexity of classifying extensions $C$ by $A$, in the cases when $C$ is torsion-free and $A$ is a $p$-group, a torsion group with bounded primary components, or a free $R$-module for some subring $R\subseteq \mathbb{Q}$. Precisely, for such $C$ and $A$ we describe in terms of $C$ and $A$ the potential complexity class in the sense of Borel complexity theory of the equivalence relation $\mathcal{R}_{\mathbf{Ext}\left( C,A\right) }$ of isomorphism of extensions of $C$ by $A$. This complements a previous result by the same author, settling the case when $C$ is torsion and $A$ is arbitrary. We establish the main result within the framework of Borel-definable homological algebra, recently introduced in collaboration with Bergfalk and Panagiotopoulos. As a consequence of our main results, we will obtain that if $C$ is torsion-free and $A$ is either a free $R$-module or a torsion group with bounded components, then an extension of $C$ by $A$ splits if and only if it splits on all finite-rank subgroups of $C$. This is a purely algebraic statements obtained with methods from Borel-definable homological algebra.
Finiteness properties of torsion fields of abelian varieties

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a field $K.$ We study finite generation properties of the profinite group $\mathrm{Gal}(\Omega/K)$ and of certain closed normal subgroups thereof, where $\Omega$ is the torsion field of $A$ over $K$. In fact, we establish more general finite generation properties for monodromy groups attached to smooth projective varieties via étale cohomology. We apply this in order to give an independent proof and generalizations of a recent result of Checcoli and Dill about small exponent subfields of $\Omega/K$ in the number field case. We also give an application of our finite generation results in the realm of permanence principles for varieties with the weak Hilbert property.

Abstract:We prove that the generic type of a non-cyclic torsion-free hyperbolic group G is foreign to any interpretable abelian group, hence also to any interpretable field. This result depends, among other things, on the definable simplicity of a non-cyclic torsion-free hyperbolic group, and we take the opportunity to give a proof of the latter using Sela's description of imaginaries in torsion-free hyperbolic groups. We also use the description of imaginaries to prove that if F is a free group of rank > 2 then no orbit of a finite tuple from F under Aut(F) is definable.

Abstract:For a group $ G $ we consider its tensor square $G \otimes G$ and exterior square $G \wedge G$. We prove that for a circularly orderable group $G$, under some assumptions on $H_1(G)$ and $H_2(G)$, its exterior square and tensor square are left-orderable. This yields an obstruction for a circularly orderable group $G$ to have torsion. We apply these results to study circular orderability of tabulated virtual knot groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian length category containing a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that a subcategory of $\mathcal{M}$ is a $d$-torsion class if and only if it is closed under $d$-extensions and $d$-quotients. This generalises an important result for classical torsion classes. As an application, we prove that the $d$-torsion classes in $\mathcal{M}$ form a complete lattice. Moreover, we use the characterisation to classify the $d$-torsion classes associated to higher Auslander algebras of type $\mathbb{A}$, and give an algorithm to compute them explicitly. The classification is furthermore extended to the setup of higher Nakayama algebras.

Abstract:We present the notion of non-abelian descent type, which classifies torsors up to twisting by a Galois cocycle. This relies on the previous construction of kernels and non-abelian Galois 2-cohomology due to Springer and Borovoi. The necessity of descent types arises in the context of the descent theory where no torsors are given a priori, for example, when we wish to study the arithmetic properties such as the Brauer--Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle on homogeneous spaces without rational points. This new definition also unifies the types by Colliot-Thélène--Sansuc, the extended types by Harari--Skorobogatov, and the finite descent type by Harpaz--Wittenberg.

Abstract:Loop torsors over Laurent polynomial rings in characteristic 0 were originally introduced in relation to infinite dimensional Lie theory. Applications to other areas require a theory that can yields results in positive characteristic, and for group schemes that are not of finite type. The relation between loop and so-called toral torsors, is one of the central questions in the area. The present paper addresses this question in full generality.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field and let $G$ be an affine $k$-algebraic group. Call a $G$-torsor weakly versal for a class of $k$-schemes $\mathscr{C}$ if it specializes to every $G$-torsor over a scheme in $\mathscr{C}$. A recent result of the first author, Reichstein and Williams says that for any $d\geq 0$, there exists a $G$-torsor over a finite type $k$-scheme that is weakly versal for finite type affine $k$-schemes of dimension at most $d$. The first author also observed that if $G$ is unipotent, then $G$ admits a torsor over a finite type $k$-scheme that is weakly versal for all affine $k$-schemes, and that the converse holds if $\operatorname{char} k=0$. In this work, we extend this to all fields, showing that $G$ is unipotent if and only if it admits a $G$-torsor over a quasi-compact base that is weakly versal for all finite type regular affine $k$-schemes. Our proof is characteristic-free and it also gives rise to a quantitative statement: If $G$ is a non-unipotent subgroup of $\mathbf{GL}_n$, then a $G$-torsor over a quasi-projective $k$-scheme of dimension $d$ is not weakly versal for finite type regular affine $k$-schemes of dimension $n(d+1)+2$. This means in particular that every such $G$ admits a nontrivial torsor over a regular affine $(n+2)$-dimensional variety. When $G$ contains a nontrivial torus, we show that nontrivial torsors already exist over $3$-dimensional smooth affine varieties (even when $G$ is special), and this is optimal in general.

Building pretorsion theories from torsion theories

Abstract:Torsion theories play an important role in abelian categories and they have been widely studied in the last sixty years. In recent years, with the introduction of pretorsion theories, the definition has been extended to general (non-pointed) categories. Many examples have been investigated in several different contexts, such as topological spaces and topological groups, internal preorders, preordered groups, toposes, V-groups, crossed modules, etc. In this paper, we show that pretorsion theories naturally appear also in the "classical" framework, namely in abelian categories. We propose two ways of obtaining pretorsion theories starting from torsion theories. The first one uses "comparable" torsion theories, while the second one extends a torsion theory with a Serre subcategory. We also give a universal way of obtaining a torsion theory from a given pretorsion theory in additive categories. We conclude by providing several applications in module categories, internal groupoids, recollements and representation theory.

Abstract:An almost Abelian Lie group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. We show that all discrete subgroups of complex simply connected almost Abelian groups are finitely generated. The topology of connected almost Abelian Lie groups is studied by expressing each connected almost Abelian Lie group as a quotient of its universal covering group by a discrete normal subgroup. We then prove that no complex connected almost Abelian group is compact, and give conditions for the compactness of connected subgroups of such groups. Towards studying the homotopy type of complex connected almost Abelian groups, we investigate the maximal compact subgroups of such groups.
