Abstract:A non-trivial element of a group is a generalized torsion element if some products of its conjugates is the identity. The minimum number of such conjugates is called a generalized torsion order. We provide several restrictions for generalized torsion orders by using $G$-invariant norm and Alexander polynomials.

Abstract:A generalized torsion element in a group is a non-trivial element such that some products of its conjugates is the identity element. This is an obstruction for a group being bi-orderable. Though it is known that there is a non-bi-orderable group without generalized torsion elements, it is conjectured that 3-manifold groups without generalized torsion elements are bi-orderable. In this paper, we find generalized torsion elements in the fundamental groups of once punctured torus bundles which are not bi-orderable, and this implies that the conjecture is true for the fundamental groups of once punctured torus bundles. Our result contains examples of generalized torsion elements in the fundamental groups of tunnel number two hyperbolic once punctured torus bundles.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group and $g$ a non-trivial element in $G$. If some non-empty finite product of conjugates of $g$ equals to the identity, then $g$ is called a generalized torsion element. The minimum number of conjugates in such a product is called the order of $g$. We will classify $3$-manifolds $M$, each of whose fundamental group has a generalized torsion element of order two. Furthermore, we will classify such elements in $\pi_1(M)$. We also prove that $R$-group and $\overline{R}$-group coincide for $3$-manifold groups, and classify $3$-manifold groups which are $R$-groups (and hence $\overline{R}$-groups).

Abstract:We show that a group whose generalized torsion elements are torsion elements (which we call a $TR^{*}$-group) is torsion-by-$R^{*}$ group, an extension of torsion group by a group without generalized torsion elements. We also discuss a generalized torsion group, a group all of whose non-trivial elements are generalized torsion elements.

Abstract:In a group, a generalized torsion element is a non-identity element whose some non-empty finite product of its conjugates yields the identity. Such an element is an obstruction for a group to be bi-orderable. We show that the Weeks manifold, the figure-eight sister manifold, and the complement of Whitehead sister link admit generalized torsion elements in their fundamental groups. In particular, the Whitehead sister link, which is the pretzel link of type (−2,3,8) , can be generalized to hyperbolic pretzel links of type (−2,3,2n) (n≥4) . These give the first examples of hyperbolic links whose link groups admit generalized torsion elements.

Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this paper we study the possible torsion in even-dimensional higher class groups Cl 2n (Λ)(n ≥ 1) of an order Λ in a semisimple algebra A over a number field F with a ring of integers 𝒪 F . We show that for certain orders, called generalized Eichler orders, bip-torsion in Cl 2n (Λ) can only occur for primes p dividing prime ideals ℘ of 𝒪 F , at which Λ is not maximal. In particular, the results apply to Eichler orders in quaternion algebras and to hereditary orders.

Abstract:We determine the mean number of 2-torsion elements in class groups of cubic orders, when such orders are enumerated by discriminant. Specifically, we prove that when isomorphism classes of totally real (resp., complex) cubic orders are enumerated by discriminant, the average 2 -torsion in the class group is 1 + \frac{1}{4} imes \frac{\zeta(2)}{\zeta(4)} (resp., 1 + \frac{1}{2} imes \frac{\zeta(2)}{\zeta(4)} ). In particular, we find that the average 2 -torsion in the class group increases when one ranges over all orders in cubic fields instead of restricting to the subfamily of rings of integers of cubic fields, where the average 2 -torsion in the class group was first determined in work of Bhargava to be \frac{5}{4} (resp., \frac{3}{2} ).By work of Bhargava–Varma, proving this result amounts to obtaining an asymptotic count of the number of "reducible" \operatorname{SL}_{3}(\mathbb{Z}) -orbits on the space \mathbb{Z}^{2} \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\operatorname{Sym}^{2} \mathbb{Z}^{3} of 3 imes 3 symmetric integer matrices having bounded invariants and satisfying local conditions. Abstract:For a group $ G $ we consider its tensor square $G \otimes G$ and exterior square $G \wedge G$. We prove that for a circularly orderable group $G$, under some assumptions on $H_1(G)$ and $H_2(G)$, its exterior square and tensor square are left-orderable. This yields an obstruction for a circularly orderable group $G$ to have torsion. We apply these results to study circular orderability of tabulated virtual knot groups.

Torsion invariants of complexes of groups

Abstract:Suppose a residually finite group $G$ acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain $Q$, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroups. Let $\partial Q$ be the subcomplex of $Q$ with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of $G$. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of $\partial Q$, shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the universal and the usual $L^2$-torsion of $G$ in terms of the torsion of stabilizers and topology of $\partial Q$. In particular, we get complete answers for right-angled Artin groups, which shows they satisfy a torsion analogue of the Lück approximation theorem.

Generalized torsion elements in the fundamental groups of 3-manifolds obtained by the 0-surgeries along some double twist knots

Abstract:We consider the 3-manifold obtained by the 0-surgery along a double twist knot. We construct a candidate for a generalized torsion element in the fundamental group of the surged manifold, and see that there exists the cases where the candidate is actually a generalized torsion element. For a proof, we use the JSJ-decomposition of the surged manifold. We also prove that the fundamental group of the 3-manifold obtained from the 0-surgery along a double twist knot is bi-orderable if and only if it admits no generalized torsion elements. We also list some examples of the surged manifolds whose fundamental groups admit generalized torsion elements.

Abstract:We study torsion generators for the (extended) mapping class group or the extended mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus g. We show that for every g is grater than or equal to 14, mapping class group can be generated by two torsion elements of order g+1 if g is even, and of orders g+1 and g+1 if g is odd. Also for g grater than or equal to 16, mapping class group can be generated by two torsion elements of orders g+1 if g+1 is not divisible by 3, and of orders g+1 and g+1 if g+1 is divisible by 3. Similarly, we obtain two torsion elements generating extended mapping class groups.

Abstract:We prove a Freiman--Ruzsa-type theorem with polynomial bounds in arbitrary abelian groups with bounded torsion, thereby proving (in full generality) a conjecture of Marton. Specifically, let $G$ be an abelian group of torsion $m$ (meaning $mg=0$ for all $g \in G$) and suppose that $A$ is a non-empty subset of $G$ with $|A+A| \leq K|A|$. Then $A$ can be covered by at most $(2K)^{O(m^3)}$ translates of a subgroup of $H \leq G$ of cardinality at most $|A|$. The argument is a variant of that used in the case $G = \mathbf{F}_2^n$ in a recent paper of the authors.

Obstructing two-torsion in the rational knot concordance group

Abstract:It is well known that there are many 2-torsion elements in the classical knot concordance group. On the other hand, it is not known if there is any torsion element in the rational knot concordance group $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Cha defined the algebraic rational concordance group $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$, an analogue of the classical algebraic concordance group, and showed that $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}\cong\mathbb{Z}^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_2^\infty\oplus\mathbb{Z}_4^\infty$. The knots that represent 2-torsions in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ potentially have order $2$ in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper, we provide an obstruction for knots of order $2$ in $\mathcal{AC}_\mathbb{Q}$ from being of finite order in $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we give a family consisting of such knots that generates an infinite rank subgroup of $\mathcal{C}_\mathbb{Q}$. We also note that Cha proved that in higher dimensions, the algebraic rational concordance order is the same as the rational knot concordance order. Our obstruction is based on the localized von Neumann $\rho$-invariant.

Abstract:Given $\mathbf{n}=(n_{1},\ldots,n_{r})\in\mathbb{N}^r$, let $\Gamma_{\mathbf{n}}$ be a group presentable as $\left\langle \gamma_{1},\ldots,\gamma_{k}\:|\:\gamma_{1}^{n_{1}}=\gamma_{2}^{n_{2}}=\cdots=\gamma_{r}^{n_{r}}\right\rangle. $ If $\gcd(n_i,n_j)=1$ for all $i\not=j$, we say $\Gamma_{\mathbf{n}}$ is a "generalized torus knot group" and otherwise say it is a "generalized torus link group." This definition includes torus knot and link groups ($r=2$), that is, fundamental groups of the complement of a torus knot or link in $S^{3}$. Let $G$ be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group. We show that the $G$-character varieties of generalized torus knot groups are path-connected. We then count the number of irreducible components of the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-character varieties of $\Gamma_{\mathbf{n}}$ when $n_i$ is odd for all $i$.

Abstract:We show there exist polynomial bounds on torsion of elliptic curves which come from a fixed geometric isogeny class. More precisely, for an elliptic curve $E_0$ defined over a number field $F_0$, for each $\epsilon>0$ there exist constants $c_\epsilon:=c_\epsilon(E_0,F_0),C_\epsilon:=C_\epsilon(E_0,F_0)>0$ such that for any elliptic curve $E_{/F}$ geometrically isogenous to $E_0$, if $E(F)$ has a point of order $N$ then \[ N\leq c_\epsilon\cdot [F:\mathbb{Q}]^{1/2+\epsilon}, \] and one also has \[ \# E(F)[\textrm{tors}] \leq C_\epsilon\cdot [F:\mathbb{Q}]^{1+\epsilon}. \]

Abstract:Abstract We study two classes of torsion classes that generalize functorially finite torsion classes, that is, semistable torsion classes and morphism torsion classes. Semistable torsion classes are parametrized by the elements in the real Grothendieck group up to TF equivalence. We give a close connection between TF equivalence classes and the cones given by canonical decompositions of the spaces of projective presentations due to Derksen–Fei. More strongly, for ‐tame algebras and hereditary algebras, we prove that TF equivalence classes containing lattice points are exactly the cones given by canonical decompositions. One of the key steps in our proof is a general description of semistable torsion classes in terms of morphism torsion classes. We also answer a question by Derksen–Fei negatively by giving examples of algebras that do not satisfy the ray condition. As an application of our results, we give an explicit description of TF equivalence classes of preprojective algebras of type .
