Abstract:<p>Mathematical learning disabilities or difficulties (MLD) are an increasing source of educational inequalities. This article explores research about MLD in Mathematics Education over the past ten years. The methodology focuses on specific, validated keywords. These keywords are used to identify articles in leading journals in mathematics education. Our work makes several new contributions to the field of mathematics education, notably: a reusable methodology and keywords for a literature review; an exhaustive list of articles about MLD in leading mathematics education journals; a discussion of the definitions and features of MLD used in these articles; and a tool to classify research dealing with MLD (categories that characterize students with MLD). We also highlight some unexplored dimensions regarding MLD in Mathematics Education research.</p>
Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics Research

History and Overview

Abstract:Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics Research discusses how information about what the mathematical literature contains can be formalized and made easier to express, encode, and explore. Many of the tools necessary to make this information system a reality will require much more than indexing and will instead depend on community input paired with machine learning, where mathematicians' expertise can fill the gaps of automatization. This report proposes the establishment of an organization; the development of a set of platforms, tools, and services; the deployment of an ongoing applied research program to complement the development work; and the mobilization and coordination of the mathematical community to take the first steps toward these capabilities. The report recommends building on the extensive work done by many dedicated individuals under the rubric of the World Digital Mathematical Library, as well as many other community initiatives. Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics envisions a combination of machine learning methods and community-based editorial effort that makes a significantly greater portion of the information and knowledge in the global mathematical corpus available to researchers as linked open data through a central organizational entity-referred to in the report as the Digital Mathematics Library. This report describes how such a library might operate - discussing development and research needs, role in facilitating discover and interaction, and establishing partnerships with publishers.

Abstract:In this paper the authors show an overview of Virtual Digital Mathematics Library in Japan (DML-JP), contents of which consist of metadata harvested from institutional repositories in Japan and digital repositories in the world. DML-JP is, in a sense, a subject specific repository which collaborate with various digital repositories. Beyond portal website, DML-JP provides subject-specific metadata through OAI-ORE. By the schema it is enabled that digital repositories can load the rich metadata which were added by mathematicians.

Abstract:Some aspects of Computer Algebra (notably Computation Group Theory and Computational Number Theory) have some good databases of examples, typically of the form "all the X up to size n". But most of the others, especially on the polynomial side, are lacking such, despite the utility they have demonstrated in the related fields of SAT and SMT solving. We claim that the field would be enhanced by such community-maintained databases, rather than each author hand-selecting a few, which are often too large or error-prone to print, and therefore difficult for subsequent authors to reproduce.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in leveraging Language Models (LMs), encompassing Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) and Large-scale Language Models (LLMs), within the domain of mathematics. This paper conducts a comprehensive survey of mathematical LMs, systematically categorizing pivotal research endeavors from two distinct perspectives: tasks and methodologies. The landscape reveals a large number of proposed mathematical LLMs, which are further delineated into instruction learning, tool-based methods, fundamental CoT techniques, and advanced CoT methodologies. In addition, our survey entails the compilation of over 60 mathematical datasets, including training datasets, benchmark datasets, and augmented datasets. Addressing the primary challenges and delineating future trajectories within the field of mathematical LMs, this survey is positioned as a valuable resource, poised to facilitate and inspire future innovation among researchers invested in advancing this domain.

Abstract:Purpose: We seek to explore the realm of literature about digital libraries. We specifically seek to ascertain how interest in this subject has evolved, its impact, the most productive journals and countries, the number of occurrences of digital libraries, the relationships and dynamics of the main concepts mentioned, and the dynamics of metadata formats.Methods: We extracted corpora from the Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Search bibliographic databases. We analyzed the named entities and concepts contained within these corpora with the help of text mining technologies, CorTexT in particular.Results: While the number of publications on the subject of digital libraries is increasing, their average number of citations is decreasing. China, the United States and India are the most productive countries on the subject. Literature about conservation and national libraries has gradually been replaced by literature about open access, university libraries and the relationship with users. Internet Archive is the most cited digital library in literature and continues to grow. Dublin Core is the most talked about metadata format, however the subject of metadata formats is declining in the corpus today.Conclusion: Digital libraries now seem to be reaching the age of maturity.

Abstract:This report introduces LLaMandement, a state-of-the-art Large Language Model, fine-tuned by the French government and designed to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of processing parliamentary sessions (including the production of bench memoranda and documents required for interministerial meetings) by generating neutral summaries of legislative proposals. Addressing the administrative challenges of manually processing a growing volume of legislative amendments, LLaMandement stands as a significant legal technological milestone, providing a solution that exceeds the scalability of traditional human efforts while matching the robustness of a specialized legal drafter. We release all our fine-tuned models and training data to the community.

Abstract:We present a natural language modelization method which is strongely relying on mathematics. This method, called "Formal Semantics," has been initiated by the American linguist Richard M. Montague in the 1970's. It uses mathematical tools such as formal languages and grammars, first-order logic, type theory and $\lambda$-calculus. Our goal is to have the reader discover both Montagovian formal semantics and the mathematical tools that he used in his method. ----- Nous présentons une méthode de modélisation de la langue naturelle qui est fortement basée sur les mathématiques. Cette méthode, appelée «sémantique formelle», a été initiée par le linguiste américain Richard M. Montague dans les années 1970. Elle utilise des outils mathématiques tels que les langages et grammaires formels, la logique du 1er ordre, la théorie de types et le $\lambda$-calcul. Nous nous proposons de faire découvrir au lecteur tant la sémantique formelle de Montague que les outils mathématiques dont il s'est servi.

Discovering Mathematical Objects of Interest -- A Study of Mathematical Notations

Abstract:Mathematical notation, i.e., the writing system used to communicate concepts in mathematics, encodes valuable information for a variety of information search and retrieval systems. Yet, mathematical notations remain mostly unutilized by today's systems. In this paper, we present the first in-depth study on the distributions of mathematical notation in two large scientific corpora: the open access arXiv (2.5B mathematical objects) and the mathematical reviewing service for pure and applied mathematics zbMATH (61M mathematical objects). Our study lays a foundation for future research projects on mathematical information retrieval for large scientific corpora. Further, we demonstrate the relevance of our results to a variety of use-cases. For example, to assist semantic extraction systems, to improve scientific search engines, and to facilitate specialized math recommendation systems. The contributions of our presented research are as follows: (1) we present the first distributional analysis of mathematical formulae on arXiv and zbMATH; (2) we retrieve relevant mathematical objects for given textual search queries (e.g., linking $P_{n}^{(\alpha, \beta)}\!\left(x\right)$ with `Jacobi polynomial'); (3) we extend zbMATH's search engine by providing relevant mathematical formulae; and (4) we exemplify the applicability of the results by presenting auto-completion for math inputs as the first contribution to math recommendation systems. To expedite future research projects, we have made available our source code and data.

Quantifying French Document Complexity

Abstract:Measuring a document's complexity level is an open challenge, particularly when one is working on a diverse corpus of documents rather than comparing several documents on a similar topic or working on a language other than English. In this paper, we define a methodology to measure the complexity of French documents, using a new general and diversified corpus of texts, the "French Canadian complexity level corpus", and a wide range of metrics. We compare different learning algorithms to this task and contrast their performances and their observations on which characteristics of the texts are more significant to their complexity. Our results show that our methodology gives a general-purpose measurement of text complexity in French.

Abstract:MathRepo, located at https://mathrepo.mis.mpg.de, is an online repository for mathematical research data. In mathematics, research data comes in many different flavours. For instance, in computer algebra it most often takes the form of mathematical documents, notebooks, research-software packages and libraries, computer algebra systems, algorithms, and collections of mathematical objects. In this work we give an overview of the type of contributions hosted by MathRepo, we discuss the principles that should be followed to make a research-data repository good, and the current challenges we are facing as MathRepo's maintainers.
