Abstract:Mixed Tate motives are central objects in the study of cohomology groups of algebraic varieties and their arithmetic invariants. They also play a crucial role in a wide variety of questions related to multiple zeta values and polylogarithms, algebraic K-theory, hyperbolic geometry, and particle physics among others. This survey article is an introduction to mixed Tate motives and their many facets. It was written for the proceedings of the Summer School on Motives and Arithmetic Groups held in Strasbourg in June 2022.

Abstract:This book discusses the construction of triangulated categories of mixed motives over a noetherian scheme of finite dimension, extending Voevodsky's definition of motives over a field. In particular, it is shown that motives with rational coefficients satisfy the formalism of the six operations of Grothendieck. This is achieved by studying descent properties of motives, as well as by comparing different presentations of these categories, following and extending insights and constructions of Deligne, Beilinson, Bloch, Thomason, Gabber, Levine, Morel, Voevodsky, Ayoub, Spitzweck, Röndigs, Østvær, and others. In particular, the relation of motives with $K$-theory is addressed in full, and we prove the absolute purity theorem with rational coefficients, using Quillen's localization theorem in algebraic $K$-theory together with a variation on the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. Using resolution of singularities via alterations of de Jong-Gabber, this leads to a version of Grothendieck-Verdier duality for constructible motivic sheaves with rational coefficients over rather general base schemes. We also study versions with integral coefficients, constructed via sheaves with transfers, for which we obtain partial results. Finally, we associate to any mixed Weil cohomology a system of categories of coefficients and well behaved realization functors, establishing a correspondence between mixed Weil cohomologies and suitable systems of coefficients. The results of this book have already served as ground reference in many subsequent works on motivic sheaves and their realizations, and pointers to the most recent developments of the theory are given in the introduction.

Abstract:We survey some recent developments at the interface of algebraic geometry, surface topology, and the theory of ordinary differential equations. Motivated by "non-abelian" analogues of standard conjectures on the cohomology of algebraic varieties, we study mapping class group actions on character varieties and their algebro-geometric avatar -- isomonodromy differential equations -- from the point of view of both complex and arithmetic geometry. We then collect some open questions and conjectures on these topics. These notes are an extended version of my talk at the April 2024 Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard.

Generic motives and motivic cohomology of fields

Abstract:These notes are devoted to the study of generic motives and their application to the structure of the motivic cohomology of fields. Related to Voevodsky's homotopy $t$-structure on motivic complexes, generic motives are also central to the conjectural motivic $t$-structure, as was shown by Beilinson. Morphisms of generic motives are closely related to the functoriality of Rost's cycle modules. e obtain some new computations of generic motives, and deduce computations of morphisms of generic motives, which draw a conjectural picture. The structure of generic motives reflects into that of motivic cohomology of fields. After giving a new argument for determining weights in the K-theory of number fields using Borel's isomorphism, we deduce that many motivic cohomology groups of fields have infinite rank, usually of the same cardinality as the field itself. As an example motivic cohomology groups of the real or complex numbers are shown to be uncountable in many degrees and twists. Despite these results, we formulate a hope on their behavior with respect to transcendental elements, providing a counterpart to the Beilinson-Soulé vanishing conjecture.

Abstract:Over qcqs finite-dimensional schemes, we prove that étale motives of geometric origin can be characterised by a constructibility property which is purely categorical, giving a full answer to the question "Do all constructible étale motives come from geometry?" which dates back to Cisinski and Déglise's work. We also show that they afford the continuity property and satisfy h-descent and Milnor excision.

Abstract:The Mordell conjecture: origins, approaches, generalizations -- The Mordell conjecture predicts that a diophantine equation defining a smooth projective curve of genus at least two has only finity many solutions in a given number field. The century that ran since its statement, in 1922, gave rise to several approaches, several proofs, and vast extensions most of which are still conjectural. This text is based on the oral presentation and aims at recalling this story. La conjecture de Mordell prédit qu'une équation diophantienne définissant une courbe projective lisse de genre au moins deux n'a qu'un nombre fini de solutions dans un corps de nombres donné. Le siècle qui s'est écoulé depuis son énoncé, en 1922, a vu plusieurs approches, plusieurs démonstrations, ainsi que de vastes extensions dont la plupart sont encore conjecturales. Ce texte, qui reprend l'exposé oral, s'efforce de retracer cette histoire.

Abstract:Given a pure motive $M$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a multilinear algebraic structure $\mathsf{s}$ on $M$, and given a representation $V$ of the group respecting $\mathsf{s}$, we describe a functorial transfer $M^V$. We formulate a criterion that guarantees when the two periods of $M^V$ are equal. This has an implication for the critical values of the $L$-function attached to $M^V.$ The criterion is explicated in a variety of examples such as: tensor product motives and Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions; orthogonal motives and the standard $L$-function for even orthogonal groups; twisted tensor motives and Asai $L$-functions.

Noncommutative Motives I: A Universal Characterization of the Motivic Stable Homotopy Theory of Schemes

Abstract:Let $\V$ be a symmetric monoidal model category and let $X$ be an object in $\V$. From this we can construct a new symmetric monoidal model category $Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$ of symmetric spectra objects in $\V$ with respect to $X$, together with a left Quillen monoidal map $\V\to Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$ sending $X$ to an invertible object. In this paper we use the recent developments in the subject of Higher Algebra to understand the nature of this construction. Every symmetric monoidal model category has an underlying symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-category and the first notion should be understood as a mere "presentation" of the second. Our main result is the characterization of the underlying symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of $Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$, by means of a universal property inside the world of symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-categories. In the process we also describe the link between the construction of ordinary spectra and the one of symmetric spectra. As a corollary, we obtain a precise universal characterization for the motivic stable homotopy theory of schemes with its symmetric monoidal structure. This characterization trivializes the problem of finding motivic monoidal realizations and opens the way to compare the motivic theory of schemes with other motivic theories. As an application we provide a new approach to the theory of noncommutative motives by constructing a stable motivic homotopy theory for the noncommutative spaces of Kontsevich. For that we introduce an analogue for the Nisnevich topology in the noncommutative setting. Our universal property for the classical theory for schemes provides a canonical monoidal map towards these new noncommutative motives and allows us to compare the two theories.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to raise the possibility that there exists a meaningful theory of `motives' associated to certain hypergeometric integrals, viewed as functions of their parameters. It goes beyond the classical theory of motives, but should be compatible with it. Such a theory would explain a recent and surprising conjecture arising in the context of scattering amplitudes for a motivic Galois group action on Gauss' ${}_2F_1$ hypergeometric function, which we prove in this paper by direct means. More generally, we consider Lauricella hypergeometric functions and show on the one hand how the coefficients in their Taylor expansions can be promoted, via the theory of motivic fundamental groups, to motivic multiple polylogarithms. The latter are periods of ordinary motives and admit an action of the usual motivic Galois group, which we call the `local' action. On the other hand, we define lifts of the full Lauricella functions as matrix coefficients in a Tannakian category of twisted cohomology, which inherit an action of the corresponding Tannaka group. We call this the `global' action. We prove that these two actions, local and global, are compatible with each other, even though they are defined in completely different ways. The main technical tool is to prove that metabelian quotients of generalised Drinfeld associators on the punctured Riemann sphere are hypergeometric functions. We also study single-valued versions of these hypergeometric functions, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:This article gives a short step-by-step introduction to the representation of parametric Feynman integrals in scalar perturbative quantum field theory as periods of motives. The application of motivic Galois theory to the algebro-geometric and categorical structures underlying Feynman graphs is reviewed up to the current state of research. The example of primitive log-divergent Feynman graphs in scalar massless $\phi^4$ quantum field theory is analysed in detail.

Abstract: We study Galois descents for categories of mixed Tate motives over $\mathcal{O}_{N}[1/N]$, for $N\in \left\{2, 3, 4, 8\right\}$ or $\mathcal{O}_{N}$ for $N=6$, with $\mathcal{O}_{N}$ the ring of integers of the $N^{\text{th}}$ cyclotomic field, and construct families of motivic iterated integrals with prescribed properties. In particular this gives a basis of honorary multiple zeta values (linear combinations of iterated integrals at roots of unity $\mu_{N}$ which are multiple zeta values). It also gives a new proof, via Goncharov's coproduct, of Deligne's results: the category of mixed Tate motives over $\mathcal{O}_{k_{N}}[1/N]$, for $N\in \left\{2, 3, 4,8\right\}$ is spanned by the motivic fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1}\setminus\left\{0,\mu_{N},\infty \right\}$ with an explicit basis. By applying the period map, we obtain a generating family for multiple zeta values relative to $\mu_{N}$.

Abstract:In this thesis we give two applications of Ayoub's motivic nearby cycles functor: First we give a generalization of Grothendieck's classical local monodromy theorem. In the classical setup we show that the inertia group acts quasi-unipotently on the étale cohomology of sheaves 'coming from motives'. Second we study the notion of universal local acyclicity for motives and show that for étale motives universal local acyclicity over an excellent 1- dimensional regular base scheme is detected by the motivic nearby cycles functor. Along the way we prove properties of the motivic nearby cycles functor which might be of independent interest. In particular we show that with rational coefficients the unipotent motivic nearby cycles functor is a direct summand of the total motivic nearby cycles functor.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{k}$ be a field of characteristic $p$. We introduce a formalism of mixed sheaves with coefficients in $\mathbb{k}$ and showcase its use in representation theory. More precisely, we construct for all quasi-projective schemes $X$ over an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_p$ a $\mathbb{k}$-linear triangulated category of motives on $X$. Using work of Ayoub (2007), Cisinski-Deglise (2012) and Geisser-Levine (2000), we show that this system of categories has a six functors formalism and computes higher Chow groups. Indeed, it behaves similarly to other categories of sheaves that one is used to. We attempt to make its construction also accessible to non-experts. We then consider the subcategory of stratified mixed Tate motives defined for affinely stratified varieties $X$, discuss perverse and parity motives and prove formality results. As an example, we combine these results and Soergel (2000) to construct a geometric and graded version of Soergel's modular category $\mathscr O(G)$, consisting of rational representations of a split semisimple group $G/\mathbb{k}$, and thereby equip it with a full six functor formalism (see Riche-Soergel-Williamson (2014) and Achar-Riche (2016) for other approaches). The main idea of using motives in geometric representation theory in this way as well as many results about stratified mixed Tate motives are directly borrowed from Soergel and Wendt, who tell the story in characteristic zero.
