Abstract:Digital Twins are one of the hottest digital trends. In this contribution we will shortly review the concept of Digital Twins and the chances for novel industrial applications. Mathematics are a key enabler and the impact will be highlighted along four specific examples addressing Digital Product Twins democratizing Design, Digital Production Twins enabling robots to mill, Digital Production Twins driving industrialization of additive manufacturing, and Digital Performance Twins boosting operations. We conclude the article with an outlook on the next wave of Digital Twins, Executable Digital Twins, and will review the associated challenges and opportunities for mathematics.

Abstract:Multiple forms of digital transformation are imminent. Digital Twins represent one concept. It is gaining momentum because it may offer real-time transparency. Rapid diffusion of digital duplicates faces hurdles due to lack of semantic interoperability between architectures, standards and ontologies. The technologies necessary for automated discovery are in short supply. Progression of the field depends on convergence of information technology, operational technology and protocol-agnostic telecommunications. Making sense of the data, ability to curate data and perform data analytics at the edge (or mist rather than in the fog or cloud) is key to value. Delivering engines to the edge are crucial for analytics at the edge when latency is critical. The confluence of these and other factors may chart the future path for Digital Twins. The number of unknown unknowns and the known unknowns in this process makes it imperative to create global infrastructures and organize groups to pursue the development of fundamental building blocks and new ideas through research.

Abstract:A digital twin can be defined as an adaptive model of a complex physical system. Recent advances in computational pipelines, multiphysics solvers, artificial intelligence, big data cybernetics, data processing and management tools bring the promise of digital twins and their impact on society closer to reality. Digital twinning is now an important and emerging trend in many applications. Also referred to as a computational megamodel, device shadow, mirrored system, avatar or a synchronized virtual prototype, there can be no doubt that a digital twin plays a transformative role not only in how we design and operate cyber-physical intelligent systems, but also in how we advance the modularity of multi-disciplinary systems to tackle fundamental barriers not addressed by the current, evolutionary modeling practices. In this work, we review the recent status of methodologies and techniques related to the construction of digital twins. Our aim is to provide a detailed coverage of the current challenges and enabling technologies along with recommendations and reflections for various stakeholders.

Abstract:Digital Twin was introduced over a decade ago, as an innovative all-encompassing tool, with perceived benefits including real-time monitoring, simulation and forecasting. However, the theoretical framework and practical implementations of digital twins (DT) are still far from this vision. Although successful implementations exist, sufficient implementation details are not publicly available, therefore it is difficult to assess their effectiveness, draw comparisons and jointly advance the DT methodology. This work explores the various DT features and current approaches, the shortcomings and reasons behind the delay in the implementation and adoption of digital twin. Advancements in machine learning, internet of things and big data have contributed hugely to the improvements in DT with regards to its real-time monitoring and forecasting properties. Despite this progress and individual company-based efforts, certain research gaps exist in the field, which have caused delay in the widespread adoption of this concept. We reviewed relevant works and identified that the major reasons for this delay are the lack of a universal reference framework, domain dependence, security concerns of shared data, reliance of digital twin on other technologies, and lack of quantitative metrics. We define the necessary components of a digital twin required for a universal reference framework, which also validate its uniqueness as a concept compared to similar concepts like simulation, autonomous systems, etc. This work further assesses the digital twin applications in different domains and the current state of machine learning and big data in it. It thus answers and identifies novel research questions, both of which will help to better understand and advance the theory and practice of digital twins.

Abstract:A developing technology gaining interest from numerous researchers in current commercial and academic domains is known as “digital twinning” (DT). Growth has accelerated thanks to technological advances, particularly in the industrial industries. Data from both physical and virtual machines are combined in both directions. The Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are two examples of the many difficulties, applications, and technical integrations that come with digital twinning. This work thoroughly reviews and explores the notion of digital twinning. The study topics that were the focus of this survey were health care, business, smart cities, and weatherbased applications. It reflects how people currently view the research field. Examining enabling twinning technologies, open problems, and applications of digital twinning are made easier by this study.

Abstract:A Digital Twin (DT) is a set of computer-generated models that map a physical object into a virtual space. Both physical and virtual elements exchange information to monitor, simulate, predict, diagnose and control the state and behavior of the physical object within the virtual space. DTs supply a system with information and operating status, providing capabilities to create new business models. In this paper, we focus on the construction of DTs. More specifically, we focus on determining (methodologically) how to design, create and connect physical objects with their virtual counterpart. We explore the problem into several phases: from functional requirement selection and architecture planning to integration and verification of the final (digital) models. We address as well how physical components exchange real-time information with DTs, as well as experimental platforms to build DTs (including protocols and standards). We conclude with a discussion and open challenges.

Abstract:The Digital Twins (DT) has quickly become a hot topic since it was proposed. It not only appears in all kinds of commercial propaganda, but also is widely quoted by academic circles. However, there are misstatements and misuse of the term DT in business and academy. This paper revisits Digital Twins and defines it to be a more advanced system/product/service modelling and simulation environment that combines the most modern Information Communication Technology (ICTs) and engineering mechanisms digitization, and characterized by system/product/service life cycle management, physically geometric visualization, real-time sensing and measurement of system operating conditions, predictability of system performance/safety/lifespan, complete engineering mechanisms-based simulations. The idea of Digital Twins originates from modelling and simulation practices of engineering informatization, including Virtual Manufacturing (VM), Model Predictive Control (MPC), and Building Information Model (BIM). Based on the two-element VM model, we propose a three-element model to represent Digital Twins. Digital Twins does not have its own unique technical characteristics; the existing practices of Digital Twins are extensions of the engineering informatization embracing modern ICTs. These insights clarify the origin of Digital Twins and its technical essentials.

Abstract:Digital twinning is a rapidly growing area of research. Digital twins combine models and data to provide up-to-date information about the state of a system. They support reliable decision-making in fields such as structural monitoring and advanced manufacturing. The use of metrology data to update models in this way offers benefits in many areas, including metrology itself. The recent activities in digitalisation of metrology offer a great opportunity to make metrology data "twin-friendly" and to incorporate digital twins into metrological processes. This paper discusses key features of digital twins that will inform their use in metrology and measurement, highlights the links between digital twins and virtual metrology, outlines what use metrology can make of digital twins and how metrology and measured data can support the use of digital twins, and suggests potential future developments that will maximise the benefits achieved.

A Probabilistic Graphical Model Foundation for Enabling Predictive Digital Twins at Scale

Abstract:A unifying mathematical formulation is needed to move from one-off digital twins built through custom implementations to robust digital twin implementations at scale. This work proposes a probabilistic graphical model as a formal mathematical representation of a digital twin and its associated physical asset. We create an abstraction of the asset-twin system as a set of coupled dynamical systems, evolving over time through their respective state-spaces and interacting via observed data and control inputs. The formal definition of this coupled system as a probabilistic graphical model enables us to draw upon well-established theory and methods from Bayesian statistics, dynamical systems, and control theory. The declarative and general nature of the proposed digital twin model make it rigorous yet flexible, enabling its application at scale in a diverse range of application areas. We demonstrate how the model is instantiated to enable a structural digital twin of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The digital twin is calibrated using experimental data from a physical UAV asset. Its use in dynamic decision making is then illustrated in a synthetic example where the UAV undergoes an in-flight damage event and the digital twin is dynamically updated using sensor data. The graphical model foundation ensures that the digital twin calibration and updating process is principled, unified, and able to scale to an entire fleet of digital twins.

Abstract:The concept of the digital twin, also known colloquially as the DT, is a fundamental principle within Industry 4.0 framework. In recent years, the concept of digital siblings has generated considerable academic and practical interest. However, academia and industry have used a variety of interpretations, and the scientific literature lacks a unified and consistent definition of this term. The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the definitional landscape of the digital twin concept as outlined in scholarly literature, beginning with its origins in the aerospace domain and extending to its contemporary interpretations in the manufacturing industry. Notably, this investigation will focus on the research conducted on Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing, elucidating the diverse applications of digital twins in fields including aerospace, intelligent manufacturing, intelligent transportation, and intelligent cities, among others.

Abstract:The digital twin (DT) is a concept widely used in industry to create digital replicas of physical objects or systems. The dynamic, bi-directional link between the physical entity and its digital counterpart enables a real-time update of the digital entity. It can predict perturbations related to the physical object's function. The obvious applications of DTs in healthcare and medicine are extremely attractive prospects that have the potential to revolutionize patient diagnosis and treatment. However, challenges including technical obstacles, biological heterogeneity, and ethical considerations make it difficult to achieve the desired goal. Advances in multi-modal deep learning methods, embodied AI agents, and the metaverse may mitigate some difficulties. Here, we discuss the basic concepts underlying DTs, the requirements for implementing DTs in medicine, and their current and potential healthcare uses. We also provide our perspective on five hallmarks for a healthcare DT system to advance research in this field.

Abstract:Topological Data Analysis (TDA) is a rigorous framework that borrows techniques from geometric and algebraic topology, category theory, and combinatorics in order to study the "shape" of such complex high-dimensional data. Research in this area has grown significantly over the last several years bringing a deeply rooted theory to bear on practical applications in areas such as genomics, natural language processing, medicine, cybersecurity, energy, and climate change. Within some of these areas, TDA has also been used to augment AI and ML techniques. We believe there is further utility to be gained in this space that can be facilitated by a workshop bringing together experts (both theorists and practitioners) and non-experts. Currently there is an active community of pure mathematicians with research interests in developing and exploring the theoretical and computational aspects of TDA. Applied mathematicians and other practitioners are also present in community but do not represent a majority. This speaks to the primary aim of this workshop which is to grow a wider community of interest in TDA. By fostering meaningful exchanges between these groups, from across the government, academia, and industry, we hope to create new synergies that can only come through building a mutual comprehensive awareness of the problem and solution spaces.

Abstract:Digital Twin (DT) refers to the virtual copy or model of any physical entity (physical twin) both of which are interconnected via exchange of data in real time. Conceptually, a DT mimics the state of its physical twin in real time and vice versa. Application of DT includes real-time monitoring, designing/planning, optimization, maintenance, remote access, etc. Its implementation is expected to grow exponentially in the coming decades. The advent of Industry 4.0 has brought complex industrial systems that are more autonomous, smart, and highly interconnected. These systems generate considerable amounts of data useful for several applications such as improving performance, predictive maintenance, training, etc. A sudden influx in the number of publications related to ‘Digital Twin’ has led to confusion between different terminologies related to the digitalization of industries. Another problem that has arisen due to the growing popularity of DT is a lack of consensus on the description of DT as well as so many different types of DT, which adds to the confusion. This paper intends to consolidate the different types of DT and different definitions of DT throughout the literature for easy identification of DT from the rest of the complimentary terms such as ‘product avatar’, ‘digital thread’, ‘digital model’, and ‘digital shadow’. The paper looks at the concept of DT since its inception to its predicted future to realize the value it can bring to certain sectors. Understanding the characteristics and types of DT while weighing its pros and cons is essential for any researcher, business, or sector before investing in the technology.

Abstract:The accelerated change in our planet due to human activities has led to grand societal challenges including health crises, intensified extreme weather events, food security, environmental injustice, etc. Digital twin systems combined with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and edge computing provide opportunities to support planning and decision-making to address these challenges. Digital twins for Earth systems (DT4ESs) are defined as the digital representation of the complex integrated Earth system including both natural processes and human activities. They have the potential to enable a diverse range of users to explore what-if scenarios across spatial and temporal scales to improve our understanding, prediction, mitigation, and adaptation to grand societal challenges. The 4th NOAA AI Workshop convened around 100 members who are developing or interested in participating in the development of DT4ES to discuss a shared community vision and path forward on fostering a future ecosystem of interoperable DT4ES. This paper summarizes the workshop discussions around DT4ES. We first defined the foundational features of a viable digital twins for Earth system that can be used to guide the development of various use cases of DT4ES. Finally, we made practical recommendations for the community on different aspects of collaboration in order to enable a future ecosystem of interoperable DT4ES, including equity-centered use case development, community-driven investigation of interoperability for DT4ES, trust-oriented co-development, and developing a community of practice.

Abstract:The paper presents the main approaches to digital twin formation taking into account many years of research. A concept for the creation of digital twins is proposed, with regard to the evolution of the current state of the object. A digital twin is an innovative concept that is becoming increasingly relevant with the development of the fourth industrial revolution and the transition to intelligent manufacturing. The paper provides an analysis of works in the field of digital twins, considers specific features of the concept application in manufacturing, and analyzes the main problems associated with its practical implementation and their possible solutions. The work places particular emphasis on the features of the multiphysics model formation, the specifics of working with large arrays of heterogeneous data for digital twins, and the requirements for cyber-physical technological systems that are their prototypes.

Abstract:As collaborative robot (Cobot) adoption in many sectors grows, so does the interest in integrating digital twins in human-robot collaboration (HRC). Virtual representations of physical systems (PT) and assets, known as digital twins, can revolutionize human-robot collaboration by enabling real-time simulation, monitoring, and control. In this article, we present a review of the state-of-the-art and our perspective on the future of digital twins (DT) in human-robot collaboration. We argue that DT will be crucial in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of these systems by presenting compelling evidence and a concise vision of the future of DT in human-robot collaboration, as well as insights into the possible advantages and challenges associated with their integration.

Abstract:As a promising technology to converge the traditional industry with the digital economy, digital twin (DT) is being investigated by researchers and practitioners across many different fields. The importance of data to DT cannot be overstated. Data plays critical roles in constructing virtual models, building cyber-physical connections, and executing intelligent operations. The unique characteristics of DT put forward a set of new requirements on data. Against this background, this paper discusses the emerging requirements on DT-related data with respect to data gathering, interaction, universality, mining, fusion, iterative optimization, and on-demand usage. A new notion, namely digital twin data (DTD), is introduced. This paper explores some basic principles and methods for DTD gathering, interaction, storage, association, fusion, evolution and servitization, as well as the key enabling technologies. Based on the theoretical underpinning provided in this paper, it is expected that more DT researchers and practitioners can incorporate DTD into their DT development process.

Abstract:A Digital Twin (DT) is a virtual replica of a physical object or system, created to monitor, analyze, and optimize its behavior and characteristics. A Spatial Digital Twin (SDT) is a specific type of digital twin that emphasizes the geospatial aspects of the physical entity, incorporating precise location and dimensional attributes for a comprehensive understanding within its spatial environment. The current body of research on SDTs primarily concentrates on analyzing their potential impact and opportunities within various application domains. As building an SDT is a complex process and requires a variety of spatial computing technologies, it is not straightforward for practitioners and researchers of this multi-disciplinary domain to grasp the underlying details of enabling technologies of the SDT. In this paper, we are the first to systematically analyze different spatial technologies relevant to building an SDT in layered approach (starting from data acquisition to visualization). More specifically, we present the key components of SDTs into four layers of technologies: (i) data acquisition; (ii) spatial database management \& big data analytics systems; (iii) GIS middleware software, maps \& APIs; and (iv) key functional components such as visualizing, querying, mining, simulation and prediction. Moreover, we discuss how modern technologies such as AI/ML, blockchains, and cloud computing can be effectively utilized in enabling and enhancing SDTs. Finally, we identify a number of research challenges and opportunities in SDTs. This work serves as an important resource for SDT researchers and practitioners as it explicitly distinguishes SDTs from traditional DTs, identifies unique applications, outlines the essential technological components of SDTs, and presents a vision for their future development along with the challenges that lie ahead.

Abstract:The development of Digital Twins (DTs) represents a transformative advance for simulating and optimizing complex systems in a controlled digital space. Despite their potential, the challenge of constructing DTs that accurately replicate and predict the dynamics of real-world systems remains substantial. This paper introduces an intelligent framework for the construction and evaluation of DTs, specifically designed to enhance the accuracy and utility of DTs in testing algorithmic performance. We propose a novel construction methodology that integrates deep learning-based policy gradient techniques to dynamically tune the DT parameters, ensuring high fidelity in the digital replication of physical systems. Moreover, the Mean STate Error (MSTE) is proposed as a robust metric for evaluating the performance of algorithms within these digital space. The efficacy of our framework is demonstrated through extensive simulations that show our DT not only accurately mirrors the physical reality but also provides a reliable platform for algorithm evaluation. This work lays a foundation for future research into DT technologies, highlighting pathways for both theoretical enhancements and practical implementations in various industries.

Abstract:Digital Twins (DTs) are becoming popular in Additive Manufacturing (AM) due to their ability to create virtual replicas of physical components of AM machines, which helps in real-time production monitoring. Advanced techniques such as Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality (AR), and simulation-based models play key roles in developing intelligent and adaptable DTs in manufacturing processes. However, questions remain regarding scalability, the integration of high-quality data, and the computational power required for real-time applications in developing DTs. Understanding the current state of DTs in AM is essential to address these challenges and fully utilize their potential in advancing AM processes. Considering this opportunity, this work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of DTs in AM by addressing the following four research questions: (1) What are the key types of DTs used in AM and their specific applications? (2) What are the recent developments and implementations of DTs? (3) How are DTs employed in process improvement and hybrid manufacturing? (4) How are DTs integrated with Industry 4.0 technologies? By discussing current applications and techniques, we aim to offer a better understanding and potential future research directions for researchers and practitioners in AM and DTs.
