Abstract:Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics Research discusses how information about what the mathematical literature contains can be formalized and made easier to express, encode, and explore. Many of the tools necessary to make this information system a reality will require much more than indexing and will instead depend on community input paired with machine learning, where mathematicians' expertise can fill the gaps of automatization. This report proposes the establishment of an organization; the development of a set of platforms, tools, and services; the deployment of an ongoing applied research program to complement the development work; and the mobilization and coordination of the mathematical community to take the first steps toward these capabilities. The report recommends building on the extensive work done by many dedicated individuals under the rubric of the World Digital Mathematical Library, as well as many other community initiatives. Developing a 21st Century Global Library for Mathematics envisions a combination of machine learning methods and community-based editorial effort that makes a significantly greater portion of the information and knowledge in the global mathematical corpus available to researchers as linked open data through a central organizational entity-referred to in the report as the Digital Mathematics Library. This report describes how such a library might operate - discussing development and research needs, role in facilitating discover and interaction, and establishing partnerships with publishers.

Beyond indexing and abstracting, it serves as a unified quality-assured infrastructure for finding, evaluating, and connecting mathematical information that advances mathematical research as well as interdisciplinary exploration. zbMATH Open enables scientific quality control by post-publication reviews and promotes connections between researchers, institutions, and research outputs. This paper represents the functionalities of the most significant features of this open-access service, highlighting its role in shaping the future of mathematical information retrieval.

Abstract:The current research activities of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI — BAS) include the study and application of knowledge-based methods for the creation, integration and development of multimedia digital libraries with applications in cultural heritage. This report presents IMI- BAS’s developments at the digital library management systems and portals, i.e. the Bulgarian Iconographical Digital Library, the Bulgarian Folklore Digital Library and the Bulgarian Folklore Artery, etc. developed during the several national and international projects: - ―Digital Libraries with Multimedia Content and its Application in Bulgarian Cultural Heritage‖ (contract 8/21.07.2005 between the IMI– BAS, and the State Agency for Information Technologies and Communications; - FP6/IST/P-027451 PROJECT LOGOS "Knowledge-on-Demand for Ubiquitous Learning", EU FP6, IST, Priority 2.4.13 "Strengthening the Integration of the ICT research effort in an Enlarged Europe" - NSF project D-002- 189 SINUS ―S emantic Technologies for Web Services and Technology Enhanced Learning‖. - NSF project IO-03- 03/2006 ―Development of Digital Libraries and Information Portal with Virtual Exposition ―Bulgarian Folklore Heritage‖‖. The presented prototypes aims to provide flexible and effective access to the multimedia presentation of the cultural heritage artefacts and collections, maintaining different forms and format of the digitized information content and rich functionality for interaction. The developments are a result of longstanding interests and work in the technological developments in information systems, knowledge processing and content management systems. The current research activities aims at creating innovative solutions for assembling multimedia digital libraries for collaborative use in specific cultural heritage context, maintaining their semantic interoperability and creating new services for dynamic aggregation of their resources, access improvement, personification, intelligent curation of content, and content protection. The investigations are directed towards the development of distributed tools for aggregating heterogeneous content and ensuring semantic compatibility with the European digital library EUROPEANA, thus providing possibilities for pan- European access to rich digitalised collections of Bulgarian cultural heritage.

Abstract:The PROBADO project is a research effort to develop and operate advanced Digital Library support for non-textual documents. The main goal is to contribute to all parts of the Digital Library work flow from content acquisition over indexing to search and presentation. While not limited in terms of supported document types, reference support is developed for classical digital music and 3D architectural models. In this paper, we review the overall goals, approaches taken, and lessons learned so far in a highly integrated effort of university researchers and library experts. We address the problem of technology transfer, aspects of repository compilation, and the problem of inter-domain retrieval. The experiences are relevant for other project efforts in the non-textual Digital Library domain.

Abstract:Traditionally, mathematical knowledge is published in printed media such as books or journals. With the advent of the Internet, a new method of publication became available. To date, however, most online mathematical publications do not employ the full capabilities of the medium. We describe a project to modernize online mathematics presentation and build a community-focused environment in which the lines between "author" and "reader" are blurred, enhancing collaboration and improving publication quality.

Abstract:In this article we consider the basic ideas, approaches and results of developing of mathematical knowledge management technologies based on ontologies. These solutions form the basis of a specialized digital ecosystem OntoMath which consists of the ontology of the logical structure of mathematical documents Mocassin and ontology of mathematical knowledge OntoMathPRO, tools of text analysis, recommender system and other applications to manage mathematical knowledge. The studies are in according to the ideas of creating a distributed system of interconnected repositories of digitized versions of mathematical documents and project to create a World Digital Mathematical Library.

Abstract:The vast development and expansion of educational technology has led to the deconstruction of various barriers and challenges that the traditional approaches were incapable of overcoming. However, a field that still holds a great deal of interest and needs to be strengthened concerns the practices that surround mathematics education. Digital learning tools can provide a partial solution to this problem. In this study, we introduce a curriculum-driven digital practicing tool which accommodates diverse learning styles and educational needs. The representative sample of the pilot included 135 third-grade primary school students, randomly split in two groups, who participated in the 8-week experiment. The findings suggest that the digital practicing path can facilitate the development of subject mastery and increase the accuracy of arithmetic fact calculations. In addition, the use of learning analytics tools can facilitate the knowledge acquisition process and prevent learners from developing misconceptions toward the learning subject.

Digital Experiences in Mathematics Education

Abstract:Abstract The slow uptake of technology by mathematics teachers is in contrast with the rapid growth in the availability of different digital resources specifically designed to help teaching and learning mathematics. We refer to platforms that were designed to permit for mathematical communication between multiple users. We seek to explore the affordances of such digital platforms to support mathematics teachers who wish to integrate technology as part of their practice, when planning and enacting technology-based mathematical activity. Specifically, we ask: What are the affordances and constraints of the platforms that may support instrumentation and instrumentalization processes leading to the development of teacher’s didactic instrument for planning and enacting a mathematical activity in a digital environment? The four platforms we chose for analysis are STEP, DESMOS, WIMS and Labomep. Our analysis shows on the one hand that the platforms afford support to the teacher while enacting technology-based mathematics activities. On the other hand, we suggest several components of didactic instrumental genesis that mathematics teachers need to develop in order to take benefit from digital platform affordances. These components include the ability to base decision-making on data gathered and visualised in dashboard embedded in learning management systems.

Abstract:Digital competences, computer skills, information literacy and related abilities represent a crucial element in ICT education (Information and Communication Technologies). They are less frequently investigated in the frame of secondary education than in higher education. We assess these contexts in secondary education through science mapping and visualizing techniques, examining publishing patterns and trends. Databases Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus are used. Publishing exhibits logarithmic inverse relationship between rank and frequency (power laws). Only a few chief publications among hundreds account for an important share of all published research. WOS-based visualizations (VOSviewer software) of concepts used in titles, abstracts and keywords show several clusters of research: computer-, information-, as well as digital-related. Further analysis reveals that the major terms which define these clusters predominate in different periods. Computer-related are earlier terms, followed by information-related, and now digital-related. As some concepts mature terminology embraces more trendy novel concepts. Clusters of co-citing and co-cited sources shows differences among publications. Proceedings play an important role as sources of co-citations but are cited more weakly. Both co-citing and co-cited sources exhibit well defined clusters with little convergence between Library and Information Science on one side and Education and Educational Research, and Computer Science on the other even though the respective publications employ similar terminological concepts. The lack of exchange between these research domains calls for more co-operation in order to boost synergy in these critical twenty-first century skills.

Collaborative digital library of historical resources: Evaluation of first users

Abstract:This paper describes the digital library of historical resources, a research project which involves building a testbed for the purpose of developing and testing new collaborative digital library functionality and presents an initial analysis of the digital library's public use on the web. The digital library is modeled to focus on serving secondary students information needs in conducting history projects. As such, in the implementation of the digital library, the use of online resources would be an integral part of history project based learning activities. Students should be enabled to access digital resources, create and publish their own documents in the digital library and share them with others. As a testbed system, the collaborative digital library known as CoreDev has demonstrated its capabilities in serving an educational community as has been reflected by the positive feedback on the functional requirements from 44 users. Over 75% of the respondents in the user survey considered themselves capable of using the digital library easily. The beta tester demographics (n = 105) indicate that the digital library is reaching its target communities.

Abstract:This study describes a vision, how technology can help improving the efficiency in research. We propose a new clean-slate design, where more emphasis is given on the correctness and up-to-dateness of the scientific results, it is more open to new ideas and better utilize the research efforts worldwide by providing personalized interface for every researcher. The key idea is to reveal the structure and connections of the problems solved in the scientific studies. We will build the system with the main focus on the solved problems itself, and treat the studies only as one presentation form. By utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning on the network of the solved problems we could coordinate individual research activities in a large scale, that has never been seen before.

Abstract:In this paper the authors show an overview of Virtual Digital Mathematics Library in Japan (DML-JP), contents of which consist of metadata harvested from institutional repositories in Japan and digital repositories in the world. DML-JP is, in a sense, a subject specific repository which collaborate with various digital repositories. Beyond portal website, DML-JP provides subject-specific metadata through OAI-ORE. By the schema it is enabled that digital repositories can load the rich metadata which were added by mathematicians.

Abstract:The experience of foreign digital libraries of the universities of Marburg (Germany), Chalmers (Sweden) and Graz (Austria) is discussed. The structure of the libraries being reviewed comprises six key elements of DELOS conceptual model, i. e. content, users, functionality, quality, policy, and architecture. The Marburg University Library cooperates with many German libraries and possesses vast collections and resources of various types, both it owns and shares with other libraries. The e-library of Chalmers University of Technology is based on the service-oriented Central Knowledge Database comprising paper and digital collections of full texts and metadata being administered with data import-export applications on the Discovery platform. The Graz Library is the bibliographic and information center; it supports scientific research and learning with literature in printed and digital formats, and preserves the cultural heritage in natural sciences and technology. Based on the review of the mentioned digital libraries, the author concludes that Russian libraries must study the foreign experience to develop the model of an inter-university digital library.

Abstract:Educational institutions are struggling to keep up with the accelerated technological advancements; hence, sustainable and supportive tools have become essential to reshape traditional models into intelligent learning systems. This paper introduces Lib2Life, a digital library that uses advanced Natural Language Processing techniques to facilitate the digital transformation of historical documents provided by Central University Libraries in Romania. The platform enables Central University Libraries in Romania to preserve the cultural heritage of historically valuable documents, facilitating open-source access to old, printed materials such as books, manuscripts, newspapers, or literary magazines no longer protected by copyright. Lib2Life offers comprehensive functionalities, allowing librarians to benefit from automated text processing and indexing workflows that facilitate digitization, ensuring a consistent representation of original documents. For readers, the platform presents a user-friendly interface with semantic search capabilities and a recommendation engine. The system employs an ontology to organize and manage documents in a unified and structured way, contributing to the evolution of intelligent education technologies. The innovative contributions of Lib2Lifeinclude identifying new solutions for cultural heritage preservation, promoting patrimony through modern methodologies, increasing access to documentary resources, enhancing library services, and fostering the transfer of knowledge and technology to society.

Abstract:OpenDreamKit --- "Open Digital Research Environment Toolkit for the Advancement of Mathematics" --- is an H2020 EU Research Infrastructure project that aims at supporting, over the period 2015--2019, the ecosystem of open-source mathematical software systems. From that, OpenDreamKit will deliver a flexible toolkit enabling research groups to set up Virtual Research Environments, customised to meet the varied needs of research projects in pure mathematics and applications. An important step in the OpenDreamKit endeavor is to foster the interoperability between a variety of systems, ranging from computer algebra systems over mathematical databases to front-ends. This is the mission of the integration work package (WP6). We report on experiments and future plans with the \emph{Math-in-the-Middle} approach. This information architecture consists in a central mathematical ontology that documents the domain and fixes a joint vocabulary, combined with specifications of the functionalities of the various systems. Interaction between systems can then be enriched by pivoting off this information architecture.

Abstract:In the social sciences, researchers search for information on the Web, but this is most often distributed on different websites, search portals, digital libraries, data archives, and databases. In this work, we present an integrated search system for social science information that allows finding information around research data in a single digital library. Users can search for research data sets, publications, survey variables, questions from questionnaires, survey instruments, and tools. Information items are linked to each other so that users can see, for example, which publications contain data citations to research data. The integration and linking of different kinds of information increase their visibility so that it is easier for researchers to find information for re-use. In a log-based usage study, we found that users search across different information types, that search sessions contain a high rate of positive signals and that link information is often explored.

Abstract:Abstract Hungarian librarianship and related research are sadly underrepresented in international literature. With this article we intend to fill this gap and inform the experts of library and information science of some of the most recent Hungarian innovations. After showcasing the international professional connections of Hungarian librarianship, we present the structure of the Hungarian public library network and its mode of operation. We also analyse current and future main digital development plans, projects and the most important related professional activities of Hungarian libraries. Emphasis is placed on information systems promoting cooperation between libraries and the issues of the National Library System Project, which is a large-scale modernisation programme carried out between 2016 and 2018, designed to develop the IT system of the National Széchényi Library. After introducing the information systems of academic and specialised libraries and the access models of scientific databases provided by multinational and Hungarian content services, we also discuss the endeavours of public libraries aiming for multifunctionality and community organisation. The paper ends by providing insights into how the outcomes of the recent initiatives have been fed back into Hungarian LIS training courses offered in higher education.
RcdMathLib: An Open Source Software Library for Computing on Resource-Limited Devices

Abstract:We developped an open source library called RcdMathLib for solving multivariate linear and nonlinear systems. RcdMathLib supports on-the-fly computing on low-cost and resource-constrained devices, e.g., microcontrollers. The decentralized processing is a step towards ubiquitous computing enabling the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. RcdMathLib is modular- and layer-based, whereby different modules allow for algebraic operations such as vector and matrix operations or decompositions. RcdMathLib also comprises a utilities-module providing sorting and filtering algorithms as well as methods generating random variables. It enables solving linear and nonlinear equations based on efficient decomposition approaches such as the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) algorithm. The open source library also provides optimization methods such as Gauss-Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithms for solving problems of regression smoothing and curve fitting. Furthermore, a positioning module permits computing positions of IoT devices using algorithms for instance trilateration. This module also enables the optimization of the position by performing a method to reduce multipath errors on the mobile device. The library is implemented and tested on resource-limited IoT as well as on full-fledged operating systems. The open source software library is hosted on a GitLab repository.
