Abstract:Spurred by the new examples found by Kornel Szlachányi of a form of lax monoidal category, the author felt the time ripe to publish a reworking of Eilenberg-Kelly's original paper on closed categories appropriate to the laxer context. The new examples are connected with bialgebroids. With Stephen Lack, we have also used the concept to give an alternative definition of quantum category and quantum groupoid. Szlachányi has called the lax notion {\em skew monoidal}. This paper defines {\em skew closed category}, proves Yoneda lemmas for categories enriched over such, and looks at closed cocompletion.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of the Kleisli category KlT of a monad (T,{\lambda},{\mu}) on a category E and in particular the existence of (some kind of) pullbacks. This culminates when the monad is cartesian. In this case, we show that any T-category in E in the sense of A. Burroni coincides with a special kind of internal category in KlT . So, it is the case in particular for T -operads and T -multicategories. More unexpectedly, this, in turn, sheds new lights on internal categories and n-categories.

Abstract:A comprehensive account of the categorical properties of the category of small categories and asymmetric delta lenses is given in the recent works of Chollet et al. and Di Meglio. An important construction for proving many of these properties is Johnson and Rosebrugh's "pullback" of lenses, which we call the proxy pullback of lenses. We give a new treatment of the proxy pullback in terms of compatibility, a stronger notion of commutativity for squares of lenses. The proxy pullback is sometimes, but not always, a real pullback. Using new notions of sync-minimal and independent lens spans, we characterise when a lens span that forms a commuting square with a lens cospan has a comparison lens to a proxy pullback of the cospan.

Abstract:In this paper we show that if $\mathscr{C}$ is a category and if $F\colon\mathscr{C} \to \mathfrak{Cat}$ is a pseudofunctor such that for each object $X$ of $\mathscr{C}$ the category $F(X)$ is a tangent category and for each morphism $f$ of $\mathscr{C}$ the functor $F(f)$ is part of a strong tangent morphism $(F(f),\!{}_{f}{\alpha})$ and that furthermore the natural transformations $\!{}_{f}{\alpha}$ vary pseudonaturally in $\mathscr{C}^{\operatorname{op}}$, then there is a tangent structure on the pseudolimit $\mathbf{PC}(F)$ which is induced by the tangent structures on the categories $F(X)$ together with how they vary through the functors $F(f)$. We use this observation to show that the forgetful $2$-functor $\operatorname{Forget}:\mathfrak{Tan} \to \mathfrak{Cat}$ creates and preserves pseudolimits indexed by $1$-categories. As an application, this allows us to describe how equivariant descent interacts with the tangent structures on the category of smooth (real) manifolds and on various categories of (algebraic) varieties over a field.

Abstract:If $\mathbf{C}$ is a category with pullbacks then there is a bicategory with the same objects as $\mathbf{C}$, spans as morphisms, and maps of spans as 2-morphisms, as shown by Benabou. Fong has developed a theory of "decorated" cospans, which are cospans in $\mathbf{C}$ equipped with extra structure. This extra structure arises from a lax symmetric monoidal functor $F \colon \mathbf{C} \to \mathbf{D}$; we use this functor to "decorate" each cospan with apex $N \in \mathbf{C}$ with an element of $F(N)$. Using a result of Shulman, we show that when $\mathbf{C}$ has finite colimits, decorated cospans are morphisms in a symmetric monoidal bicategory. We illustrate our construction with examples from electrical engineering and the theory of chemical reaction networks.

Abstract:The cartesian structure possessed by relations, spans, profunctors, and other such morphisms is elegantly expressed by universal properties in double categories. Though cartesian double categories were inspired in part by the older program of cartesian bicategories, the precise relationship between the double-categorical and bicategorical approaches has so far remained mysterious, except in special cases. We provide a formal connection by showing that every double category with iso-strong finite products, and in particular every cartesian equipment, has an underlying cartesian bicategory. To do so, we develop broadly applicable techniques for transposing natural transformations and adjunctions between double categories, extending a line of previous work rooted in the concepts of companions and conjoints.

Abstract:Inspired by recent work on the categorical semantics of dependent type theories, we investigate the following question: When is logical structure (crucially, dependent-product and subobject-classifier structure) induced from a category to categories of diagrams in it? Our work offers several answers, providing a variety of conditions on both the category itself and the indexing category of diagrams. Additionally, motivated by homotopical considerations, we investigate the case when the indexing category is equipped with a class of weak equivalences and study conditions under which the localization map induces a structure-preserving functor between presheaf categories.

Abstract:Cartesian differential categories come equipped with a differential combinator which axiomatizes the fundamental properties of the total derivative from differential calculus. The objective of this paper is to understand when the Kleisli category of a monad is a Cartesian differential category. We introduce Cartesian differential monads, which are monads whose Kleisli category is a Cartesian differential category by way of lifting the differential combinator from the base category. Examples of Cartesian differential monads include tangent bundle monads and reader monads. We give a precise characterization of Cartesian differential categories which are Kleisli categories of Cartesian differential monads using abstract Kleisli categories. We also show that the Eilenberg-Moore category of a Cartesian differential monad is a tangent category.

Abstract:We study the spectrum of closed subcategories in a quasi-scheme, i.e. a Grothendieck category $X$. The closed subcategories are the direct analogs of closed subschemes in the commutative case, in the sense that when $X$ is the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a quasi-projective scheme $S$, then the closed subschemes of $S$ correspond bijectively to the closed subcategories of $X$. Many interesting quasi-schemes, such as the noncommutative projective scheme Qgr-$B$ = Gr-$B$/Tors-$B$ associated to a graded algebra $B$, arise as quotient categories of simpler abelian categories. In this paper we will show how to describe the closed subcategories of any quotient category $X/Y$ in terms of closed subcategories of $X$ with special properties, when $X$ is a category with a set of compact projective generators.

Abstract:We delve into the concept of categories with products that distribute over coproducts, which we call doubly-infinitary distributive categories. We show various instances of doubly-infinitary distributive categories aiming for a comparative analysis with established notions such as extensivity, infinitary distributiveness, and cartesian closedness. Our exploration reveals that this condition represents a substantial extension beyond the classical understanding of infinitary distributive categories. Our main theorem establishes that free doubly-infinitary distributive categories are cartesian closed. We end the paper with remarks on non-canonical isomorphisms, open questions, and future work.

Abstract:An important result in quasi-category theory due to Lurie is the that cocartesian fibrations are exponentiable, in the sense that pullback along a cocartesian fibration admits a right Quillen right adjoint that moreover preserves cartesian fibrations; the same is true with the cartesian and cocartesian fibrations interchanged. To explicate this classical result, we prove that the pullback along a cocartesian fibration between quasi-categories forms the oplax colimit of its "straightening," a homotopy coherent diagram valued in quasi-categories, recovering a result first observed by Gepner, Haugseng, and Nikolaus. As an application of the exponentiation operation of a cartesian fibration by a cocartesian one, we use the Yoneda lemma to construct left and right adjoints to the forgetful functor that carries a cartesian fibration over B to its obB-indexed family of fibers, and prove that this forgetful functor is monadic and comonadic. This monadicity is then applied to construct the reflection of a cartesian fibration into a groupoidal cartesian fibration, whose fibers are Kan complexes rather than quasi-categories.

Abstract:Let $\kappa$ be a regular cardinal, $\lambda<\kappa$ be a smaller infinite cardinal, and $\mathsf K$ be a $\kappa$-accessible category where colimits of $\lambda$-indexed chains exist. We show that various category-theoretic constructions applied to $\mathsf K$, such as the inserter and the equifier, produce $\kappa$-accessible categories $\mathsf E$ again, and the most obvious expected description of the full subcategory of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf E$ in terms of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf K$ holds true. In particular, if $\mathsf C$ is a $\kappa$-small category, then the category of functors $\mathsf C\rightarrow\mathsf K$ is $\kappa$-accessible, and its $\kappa$-presentable objects are precisely all the functors from $\mathsf C$ to the $\kappa$-presentable objects of $\mathsf K$. We proceed to discuss the preservation of $\kappa$-accessibility by conical pseudolimits, lax and oplax limits, and weighted pseudolimits. The results of this paper go back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our motivation comes from the theory of flat modules and flat quasi-coherent sheaves.
