Abstract:In a previous paper \cite{SV}, the authors studied the isolated singular fibers that can occur in algebraic fibrations of certain genus two fibrations. There the goal was to determine their monodromy factorizations with the goal of determining a dictionary between a set of curve configurations and certain words in the mapping class group. Each such curve configuration was originally cataloged by Namikawa and Ueno \cite{NamikawaUeno-list} in their list of genus two fibrations. We studied four families of polynomials, we restricted to fibrations whose fibers have boundary, considering the isolated affine singularity referenced in \cite{NamikawaUeno-list}. We resolved the singularities and, using carefully chosen perturbations, deformed them into Lefschetz fibrations and determined their monodromy factorizations. In two of those families, we also obtained strong information about how the central fiber compactifies in a fibration with closed fibers. In this paper we work on the other two cases by recreating the singular fibers using a different family of polynomials. In \cite{SV}, all the algebraic curves in the fibrations were given expressly as hyperelliptic equations. We utilized this symmetry both to construct the deformation and to recover the monodromy factorization. In this paper the curves are no longer expressly hyperelliptic--the quotient curve is no longer just $\CC$, the branch curves are no longer embedded in $\CC^2$, and the fibrations utilized in the quotient are now more complicated. We do, though, recover the desired behavior of the compactification of the central fiber, its deformation to a Lefschetz fibration, and the corresponding monodromy factorization.

Syzygies of Curves in Products of Projective Spaces

Abstract:Motivated by toric geometry, we lift machinery for understanding syzygies of curves in projective space to the setting of products of projective spaces. Using this machinery, we show an analogue of an influential result of Gruson, Peskine, and Lazarsfeld that gives a bound on the regularity of a possibly singular curve given its degree and the dimension of the ambient projective space. To do so, we show new results linking the shape of multigraded resolutions of a sheaf to its regularity region.

Torsion phenomena for zero-cycles on a product of curves over a number field

Abstract:For a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field $k$ a conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map of $X$ is a torsion group. In this article we consider a product $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true for $X$. Additionally, we produce many new examples of non-isogenous elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with positive rank over $\mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the natural map $E_1(\mathbb{Q})\otimes E_2(\mathbb{Q})\xrightarrow{\varepsilon} \text{CH}_0(E_1\times E_2)$ is finite, including the first known examples of rank greater than $1$. Combining the two results, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products $X=C_1\times\cdots\times C_d$ for which the analogous map $\varepsilon$ has finite image.

Non-algebraizable neighborhoods of curves

Abstract:We provide several families of compact complex curves embedded in smooth complex surfaces such that no neighborhood of the curve can be embedded in an algebraic surface. Different constructions are proposed, by patching neighborhoods of curves in projective surfaces, and blowing down exceptional curves. These constructions generalize examples recently given by S. Lvovski. One of our non algebraic argument is based on an extension theorem of S. Ivashkovich.

Cup products on curves over finite fields

Abstract:Suppose $k$ is a finite field, that $C$ is a smooth projective geometrically irreducible curve over $k$, and that $n$ is a positive integer not divisible by the characteristic of $k$. In this paper we compute cup products of elements of the étale cohomology groups $\mathrm{H}^1(C,\mathbb{Z}/n)$ and $\mathrm{H}^1(C,\mu_n)$. Over the algebraic closure $\overline{k}$ of $k$, such cup products are connected to values of the Weil pairing on the $n$-torsion of the Jacobian of $\overline{C} = \overline{k} \otimes_k C$ by using a fixed isomorphism between $\mathbb{Z}/n$ and $\mu_n$ over $\overline{C}$. Over $k$, such cup products are more subtle due to the fact that they take values in the group $\mathrm{H}^2(C,\mu_n)=\mathrm{Pic}(C)/n\cdot \mathrm{Pic}(C)$ rather than in the group $\mathrm{H}^2(\overline{C},\mu_n) = \mathbb{Z}/n$.

Abstract:In this paper we explore conditions for a curve in a smooth projective surface to have a free product of cyclic groups as the fundamental group of its complement. It is known that if the surface is $\mathbb{P}^2$, then such curves must be of fiber type, i.e. a finite union of fibers of an admissible map onto a complex curve. In this setting, we exhibit an infinite family of Zariski pairs of fiber-type curves, that is, pairs of plane projective fiber-type curves whose tubular neighborhoods are homeomorphic, but whose embeddings in $\mathbb{P}^2$ are not. This includes a Zariski pair of curves in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with only nodes as singularities (and the same singularities at infinity) whose complements have non-isomorphic fundamental groups, one of them being free. Our examples show that the position of nodes also affects the topology of the embedding of fiber-type curves.

Cobordism of algebraic knots defined by Brieskorn polynomials, II

Abstract:In our previous paper, we obtained several results concerning cobordisms of algebraic knots associated with Brieskorn polynomials: for example, under certain conditions, we showed that the exponents are cobordism invariants. In this paper, we further obtain new results concerning the Fox--Milnor type relations, decomposition of the algebraic cobordism class of an algebraic knot associated with a Brieskorn polynomial that has a null-cobordant factor over the field of rational numbers, and cyclic suspensions of knots. As a corollary, we show that a spherical algebraic knot associated with a Brieskorn polynomial has infinite order in the knot cobordism group.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a physical realization of a family of non-compact Kahler threefolds with trivial canonical bundle in hybrid Landau-Ginzburg models, motivated by some recent non-Kahler solutions of Strominger systems, and utilizing some recent ideas from GLSMs. We consider threefolds given as fiber products of compact genus g Riemann surfaces and noncompact threefolds. Each genus g Riemann surface is constructed using recent GLSM tricks, as a double cover of P^1 branched over a degree 2g + 2 locus, realized via nonperturbative effects rather than as the critical locus of a superpotential. We focus in particular on special cases corresponding to a set of Kahler twistor spaces of certain hyperKahler four-manifolds, specifically the twistor spaces of R^4, C^2/Z_k, and S^1 x R^3. We check in all cases that the condition for trivial canonical bundle arising physically matches the mathematical constraint.

Products in spin$^c$-cobordism

Abstract:We calculate the mod $2$ spin$^c$-cobordism ring up to uniform $F$-isomorphism (i.e., inseparable isogeny). As a consequence we get the prime ideal spectrum of the mod $2$ spin$^c$-cobordism ring. We also calculate the mod $2$ spin$^c$-cobordism ring ``on the nose'' in degrees $\leq 33$. We construct an infinitely generated nonunital subring of the $2$-torsion in the spin$^c$-cobordism ring. We use our calculations of product structure in the spin and spin$^c$ cobordism rings to give an explicit example, up to cobordism, of a compact $24$-dimensional spin manifold which is not cobordant to a sum of squares, which was asked about in a 1965 question of Milnor.

Secular dynamics of the three body problem: application to the upsilon Andromedae planetary system

Abstract:(abbreviated) We use a semi-numerical approach to study the secular behavior of a system composed of a central star and two massive planets in eccentric co-planar orbits. We show that the secular dynamics of this system can be described using only two parameters, the ratios of the semimajor axes and the planetary masses. The main dynamical features of the system are presented in geometrical pictures that allows us to investigate a large domain of the secular phase space of this three-body problem without time-expensive numerical integrations of the equations of motion, and without any restriction on the magnitude of the planetary eccentricities. We show that three different regimes of secular motion with respect to the secular angle $\Delta\varpi$ are possible: they are circulation, oscillation (around 0 and $180^\circ$), and high eccentricity libration in a nonlinear secular resonance. The first two regimes are a continuous extension of the classical linear secular perturbation theory; the last is a new feature, hitherto unknown, in the secular dynamics of the three-body problem.

Abstract:With each holomorphic map $f: R \rightarrow \mathbb C\mathbb P^1$ between compact Riemann surfaces one can associate a combinatorial datum consisting of the genus $g$ of $R$, the degree $n$ of $f$, the number $q$ of branching points of $f$, and the $q$ partitions of $n$ given by the local degrees of $f$ at the preimages of the branching points. These quantities are related by the Riemann-Hurwitz formula, and the Hurwitz existence problem asks whether a combinatorial datum that fits this formula actually corresponds to some $f$. In this paper, using results and techniques related to fiber products of holomorphic maps between compact Riemann surfaces, we prove a number of results that enable us to uniformly explain the non-realizability of many previously known non-realizable branch data, and to construct a large amount of new such data. We also deduce from our results the theorem of Halphen, proven in 1880, concerning polynomial solutions of the equation $A(z)^a+B(z)^b=C(z)^c$, where $a,b,c$ are integers greater than one.

Non-algebraic geometrically trivial cohomology classes over finite fields

Abstract:We give the first examples of smooth projective varieties $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ admitting a non-algebraic torsion $\ell$-adic cohomology class of degree $4$ which vanishes over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}$. We use them to show that two versions of the integral Tate conjecture over $\mathbb{F}$ are not equivalent to one another and that a fundamental exact sequence of Colliot-Thélène and Kahn does not necessarily split. Some of our examples have dimension $4$, and are the first known examples of fourfolds with non-vanishing $H^{3}_{\text{nr}}(X,\mathbb{Q}_{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{2}(2))$.

Abstract:Cofibration categories are a formalization of homotopy theory useful for dealing with homotopy colimits that exist on the level of models as colimits of cofibrant diagrams. In this paper, we deal with their enriched version. Our main result claims that the category $[\mathcal{C},\mathcal{M}]$ of enriched diagrams equipped with the projective structure inherits a structure of a cofibration category whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is locally cofibrant (or, more generally, locally flat).

A geometric approach to Feigin-Loktev fusion product and cluster relations in coherent Satake category

Abstract:We propose a geometric realization of the Feigin-Loktev fusion product of graded cyclic modules over the current algebra. This allows us to compute it in several new cases. We also relate the Feigin-Loktev fusion product to the convolution of perverse coherent sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of the adjoint group. This relation allows us to establish the existence of exact triples, conjecturally corresponding to cluster relations in the Grothendieck ring of coherent Satake category.

Singular fibers in algebraic fibrations of genus 2 and their monodromy factorizations

Abstract:Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic curves which degenerate into a single singular fiber. We determine the resolution of each of the singularities in the family and find a flat deformation of the resolution into simpler pieces, resulting in a fibration of Lefschetz type. We then record the description of the Lefschetz as a positive factorization in Dehn twists. This gives us a dictionary between configurations of curves and monodromy factorizations for some singularities of genus 2 fibrations.

Products of manifolds with fibered corners

Abstract:Manifolds with fibered corners arise as resolutions of stratified spaces, in many body compactifications of vector spaces, moduli spaces, and other settings. We define a category of fibered corners manifolds which has products and transverse fiber products, generalizing both the resolutions of products of stratified spaces and many body products, which are special cases. The product in the fibered corners category is a resolution of the cartesian product by blow-up which we call the 'ordered product'. This ordered product is a natural product for wedge (aka incomplete edge) metrics and quasi-fibered boundary metrics, a class which includes QAC and QALE metrics.

Abstract:There exists a dictionary between hereditary orders and smooth stacky curves, resp. tame orders of global dimension 2 and Azumaya algebras on smooth stacky surfaces. We extend this dictionary by explaining how the restriction of a tame order to a curve on the underlying surface corresponds to the fiber product of the curve with the stacky surface. By considering "bad" intersections we can start extending the dictionary in the 1-dimensional case to include non-hereditary orders and singular stacky curves. Two applications of these results are a novel description and classification of noncommutative conics in graded Clifford algebras, giving a geometric proof of results of Hu-Matsuno-Mori, and a complete understanding and classification of skew cubics, generalizing the work of Kanazawa for Fermat skew cubics.
