Abstract:Batch experiments were carried on adsorption of the Congo red with the attapulgite activated carbon composite material.The influence of adsorption time,adsorbent dosage,temperature,pH and adsorbent regeneration were studied.The results showed that the adsorption of Congo red on attapulgite activated carbon composite material achieved equilibrium through 60 min at 25 ℃,the initial concentration of solution 50 mg/L in neutral Congo red solution.It’s a effective method to use attapulgite activated carbon composite material as an absorbent to Processe the waste water which contains the Congo red.

Abstract:We studied the effects of surface modification of bentonite with chitosan on its ability to adsorb Congo Red (CR) dye. The adsorption behavior of CR from aqueous solution onto raw (RB) and chitosan-modified (CMB) bentonite samples was investigated as a function of parameters such as initial CR concentration, contact time, pH and temperature. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to confirm the surface modification. Compared with RB, the adsorption capacity of CMB for CR was greatly enhanced. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption of CR on both RB and CMB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. From the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of CR on RB and CMB is spontaneous and endothermic. The results indicate that chitosan-modified bentonite provides an important advantage for CR dye adsorption over raw bentonite.

Abstract:Two novel adsorbents derived from shrimp shell were prepared and their adsorption performances on Congo red were investigated. The results suggested that treated shrimp shell powder exhibited a higher adsorption capacity than raw shrimp shell powder. The factors of initial concentration, solution pH, adsorption time, and temperature were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of treated shrimp shell powder calculated according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 288.2 mg/g, which is much higher than that of chitin. The adsorption behavior could be fitted well by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Intra-particle diffusion model was also used to study the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption. Shrimp shell powder exhibited enough advantages such as large adsorption capacity, low cost, simple processing methods and high specific gravity compared with chitin or chitosan. This work confirmed that the shrimp shell biosorbent had a potential to be applied in dye wastewater treatment area.

Abstract:Herein, high-activityand petal-like Zn-Al layered double hydroxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes supported sodium dodecyl sulfonate (Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs) composites were successfully synthesized as novel, eco-friendly and effective adsorbents. The particularly physical and chemical properties of Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs composites were characterized in detail. Besides, the adsorption performance and interaction mechanism of Congo red onto Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs were also investigated under various experiment conditions. The initial pH values and adsorbent concentration played significant part in adsorption performance of Congo red dye. The adsorption kinetics and temperature-dependent isotherms of Congo red onto Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs were respectively consistent with pseudo second-order model and Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Congo red was greatly achieved to 1.42 × 10−3 mol/g adopting Langmuir model, which was much better than those previously reported other composites to date. The experimental results illustrated that the adsorption performance of Congo red onto Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs composites was primarily contributed to surface complexation, ion change, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction together with hydrogen bond to some extent. The experimental results demonstrated that the as-synthesized Zn-Al LDH/SDS/MWCNTs composites are remarkable adsorbents for the wastewater treatment systems. Our study initials a new foresight for understanding the interaction mechanism and preparing highly efficient and eco-friendly adsorbents with excellent adsorption performance for the elimination of organic contaminants.

Abstract:Shell powder (SP) with chitosan (CS) immobilized was applied as a composite biosorbent (CS-SP) for adsorptive removal of Congo red from aqueous solution. The materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Dye adsorption onto SP and CS-SP was investigated under varied conditions such as chitosan content, initial dye concentration, pH, salt concentration, and temperature. The optimum CS content was determined as 15 wt%, under which CS-SP displayed a fine coating structure and a greater adsorption capacity of 258.53 mg/g compared with 36.50 mg/g for SP at 30 degrees C. The composite adsorbent maintained its performance in high-salinity, acidic or alkaline environment, and exhibited excellent reusability throughout five-recycle regeneration. The dynamic data conformed to pseudo-second-order and Elovich models while the equilibrium isotherms followed Langmuir and Temkin models, which revealed that chemisorption was involved in the adsorption mechanism. Besides, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for CS-SP reached 263.85, 283.29, 322.58 mg/g at 30 degrees C, 40 degrees C, and 50 degrees C, respectively, and adsorption on CS-SP was verified to be endothermic and spontaneous from thermodynamic study. The results indicated that the prepared CS-SP biosorbent is quite promising for dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A cellulose-based bio-absorbent with various and plenty of amino groups was successfully prepared from corn stalk to achieve quantitative removal of Congo red from wastewater with wide pH values (5 ≤ pH ≤ 10). The maximum removal amount was 8.0 mmol·g-1 (5572 mg·g-1) under pH = 6.0 and 45 °C, which was obviously higher than reported absorbents. Investigation on dynamic adsorption and recyclability in authentic wastewater found that the removal efficiency of Congo red was >98 % within 180 min and decreased slightly in industrial water after five cycles, denoting this adsorbent with great potential for environmental application. The characterization results proved that 7.58 mmol·g-1 of different amino groups (-NH2, -NH- and -NR2) were introduced on adsorbent surface by two steps of modification and were the major functional groups for adsorption of Congo red. The inferred adsorption mechanism revealed that Congo red could be adsorbed equivalently on the amino groups by strong electrostatic interactions or hydrogen bonds. Different amino groups played different roles in adsorption due to great differences in protonation ability in 5 ≤ pH ≤ 10. The study was expected to high-efficiently remove Congo red from acidic or alkaline wastewater, and offered an alternative strategy for biowaste treatment of corn stalks in a high value-added manner.

Abstract:This study investigates the potential use of activated carbon prepared from coffee waste (CW) as an adsorbent for the removal of congo red dye from aqueous solution. The oxygen-containing groups of activated carbon prepared from CW play an important role in dyes ions adsorption onto activated carbon prepared from CW. The activated carbon is characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Adsorption experiments were carried out as batch studies at different contact time, pH, and initial dye concentration. The dye adsorption equilibrium was attained after 120 min of contact time. Removal of dye in acidic solutions was better than in basic solutions. The adsorption of dye increased with increasing initial dye concentration. The equilibrium data were revealed that Langmuir model was more suitable to describe the congo red adsorption and demonstrated excellent reusability potential with desorption greater than 90% throughout six consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles. Experimental data founded that kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order equation. Thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption was a spontaneous and exothermic process. According to the FTIR analyses, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between dyes and oxygen-containing functional groups on activated carbon prepared from CW are dominant mechanisms for dye adsorption.

Abstract:The outstanding adsorption capabilities of Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles have been widely studied for water treatment, owing to its cost-effectiveness, straightforward synthesis method, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, the problem of agglomeration significantly decreases its adsorption capacity, and the difficulties in separation and recycling after adsorption impede its practical use. Herein, in this work, we introduce a more cost-effective and simplified approach to fabricate porous network Fe(OH) 3 /BC (bacterial cellulose) composites by adsorbing Fe 3+ on BC nanofibers and subsequently treating them with alkali. This method enables the in situ growth of dispersed Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles on the BC nanofibers surface, thus creating a high effective adsorbent. Moreover, anchoring Fe(OH) 3 to the surface of BC nanofibers addresses the issue of separating Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles from the solution after adsorption. The theoretical maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity ( q m ) of Fe(OH) 3 /BC for congo red at pH 7, 25°C and a shaking speed of 120 rpm reached 725.7 mg/g in 24 h, which was significantly higher than that achieved by BC or Fe(OH) 3 powder alone. In addition, Fe(OH) 3 /BC exhibited excellent reusability, with removal efficiencies exceeding 92% and 78% after the 5th and 10th cycles of adsorption, respectively. This innovative approach not only simplifies fabrication processes and enables easy separation after adsorption, but also improved capacity for congo red removal.

Abstract:The release of unspent dyes from industries constitutes hazard and environmental challenges. For rapid and efficient removal of Congo red from aqueous solutions, a composite was prepared from coconut husk, raw clay, Fe(II) and Fe(II) compounds. Adsorption variables (initial pH of the solution, contact time, temperature and initial concentration of Congo red) were varied to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of the adsorption process. The composite was characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)-Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and pH of the point zero charge (pHpzc). The optimal values of the pH, equilibrium time and temperature for adsorption of Congo red by the composite are 2, 40 min and 50 °C, respectively. The kinetic and equilibrium data followed Avrami fractional order and Langmuir models, respectively. A 1.0 g of the composite could maximally take up 1649.3 mg of Congo red at 50 °C. The values of ΔG° are in the range of - 27.901 to - 24.492 kJ mol-1 while the value of ΔH° is - 72.239 kJ mol-1. Hence, the removal of the Congo red by the composite was spontaneous, feasible and exothermic. The adsorption process was biphasic and followed physisorption process. Electrostatic interaction played a significant role in the removal of Congo red by the composite. The combine data in this study have proven that the clay composite, a cheap adsorbent, can be used for remediation of water contaminated with Congo red.

Abstract:In this study, a microporous activated carbon (AC) with excellent performance was successfully prepared by KOH impregnation activation method using edamame shell as raw material. The synthesized AC with high specific surface area and pore volume can be effectively used for the adsorption and removal of Congo red (CR) from wastewater. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta potential were used to characterize the structure of activated carbon. The ultra-high surface area and well-developed pore volume provided sufficient adsorption sites for CR adsorption, and the maximum adsorption effect of AC on CR was up to 1509.60 mg/g at 25 °C. The effects of pH, contact time, temperature and adsorbent mass on CR adsorption were investigated. In addition, the effects of different cations (Ca 2+ , Na + , K + , NH 4 + ) on the CR adsorption of anionic dyes were focused by adding different concentrations (10 mM, 20 mM, 30 mM) of cations. The results showed that Ca 2+ , Na + and K + had a significant promotion effect on the CR adsorption of AC, among which Ca 2+ had the most obvious promotion effect. Through model fitting, CR adsorption by AC conforms to Liu adsorption isotherm model and Elovich kinetic model. The results showed that the addition of cations could substantially improve the adsorption capacity of AC on the anionic dye CR, which has potential application in the field of dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The morphology and intermolecular interaction are two of the most important factors in the design of highly efficient dye adsorbent in the industry. Millimeter-sized, bead-type, bio-based lignin/chitosan (Lig/CS) adsorbent was designed for the removal of Congo red (CR), based on the electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding, which were synthesized through the emulsification of the chitosan/lignin mixture followed by chemical cross-linking. The effects of the lignin/chitosan mass ratio, initial pH, temperature, concentration, and contact time on the adsorption were thoroughly investigated. The highest adsorption capacity (173 mg/g) was obtained for the 20 wt% Lig/CS beads, with a removal rate of 86.5%. To investigate the adsorption mechanism and recyclability, an evaluation of the kinetic model and an adsorption/desorption experiment were conducted. The adsorption of CR on Lig/CS beads followed the type 1 pseudo-second-order model, and the removal rate for CR was still above 90% at five cycles.

Abstract:MIL-53(Fe)/chitosan composite hydrogel spheres were formed by chitosan (CS) coating MIL-53(Fe). The structural and physicochemical properties of the material were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, and Zeta potential. The adsorption properties of the adsorbents were systematically analyzed for different conditions, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, and temperature. The experimental data were fitted using adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and adsorption thermodynamics models. The results show that the pseudo-first-order model and Liu model are fitted to the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm respectively. The adsorption capacity of CR reached the maximum value of 590.8 mg g −1 at 298 K. The adsorption efficiency of the composite material for CR was high, and when 100 mg L −1 CR solution was used, 99.97% of CR could be removed by reaching adsorption equilibrium. After three times of adsorption, the recovery was still close to 85%. The adsorption mechanism is mainly the synergistic effect of pore filling, ionic interactions, and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Chitin adsorbents with different degrees of deacetylation (DDA) were prepared from crab shells waste and applied in adsorptive removal of dye Congo Red (CR). The adsorbents were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. The effects of solid-liquid ratio, initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, pH value, salt concentration, and DDA on adsorption were studied. It was indicated from orthogonal experiments that the removal of CR reached 99.28% under the optimum condition (DDA = 17.85%, pH = 5.40, and time = 20 h) at 300 K. The equilibrium data were plotted by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and described better with Langmuir model (Q(m) = 366.3 mg/g, 300 K) as the temperature increased and the adsorption kinetics was well fitted by pseudo-second-order equation. It was verified from the thermodynamic parameters (Delta G, Delta H, and Delta S) that the adsorption was spontaneous, exothermic and entropy decreasing. Functional groups including amino, acetyl amino, O-glycosides, and -O- on the pyranose ring of chitin were involved in adsorption as active sites through van der Waals force and hydrogen-bonding with the adsorbate. Moreover, CR adsorption on chitin with different DDA further revealed that the crystallinity of chitin played a more important role than amino group content.

Abstract:Rice hull ash (RHA) of large surface area was obtained by acid wash and then calcination at 600°C for 4 h. The white ash was then mixed with kaolin and starch to make pellet adsorbents with reasonable strength to be utilized in a packed column. Both ash and pellet samples showed good adsorption capacities toward the organic substances in wastewater. Furthermore, the surface nature of the white ash and pellet adsorbent could be modified through either hydration or esterification reactions. Corresponding changes in silanol concentrations were successfully correlated to changes in adsorption capacity toward either Congo red or vacuum pump oil molecules.

Abstract:Activated carbons were prepared from ashitaba waste and a walnut shell to study the adsorption mechanism of congo red and methylene blue dyes in aqueous solution. These adsorbents were characterized via XRD, FTIR and SEM techniques and the dye adsorption isotherms at three temperatures were quantified. A statistical physics model was applied to interpret the adsorption mechanism of tested dyes and adsorbents. Modeling results showed that these dyes were practically separated in the solution leading to an absence of the aggregation process. Adsorption orientations of dye molecules on the adsorbents changed depending on the temperature and nature of systems. The adsorption capacity of ashitaba waste activated carbon for the removal of congo red was significant thus indicating strong interactions between this dye and tested adsorbent. Calculated adsorption energy varied from 7.25 to 20.43 kJ/mol and they showed that the adsorption of both adsorbates occurred via physical interactions at different temperatures where the removal process was endothermic.

Abstract:The adsorption properties of microporous carbon materials modified with iron citrate were investigated. The carbon materials were produced based on resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, treated in a microwave assisted solvothermal reactor, and next carbonized in the tube furnace at a temperature of 700 °C under argon atmosphere. Iron citrate was applied as a modifier, added to the material precursor before the synthesis in the reactor, in the quantity enabling to obtain the nanocomposites with C:Fe mass ratio equal to 10:1. Some samples were additionally activated using potassium oxalate or potassium hydroxide. The phase composition of the produced nanocomposites was determined using the X-ray diffraction method. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy was applied to characterize the changes in samples' morphology resulting from the activation process and/or the introduction of iron into the carbon matrix. The adsorption of nitrogen from gas phase and dyes (methylene blue and congo red) from water solution on the obtained materials was investigated. In the case of methylene blue, the adsorption equilibrium isotherms followed the Langmuir isotherm model. However, in the case of congo red, a linear dependency of adsorption and concentration in a broad equilibrium concentration range was found and well-described using the Henry equation. The most efficient adsorption of methylene blue was noticed for the sample activated with potassium hydroxide and modified with iron citrate, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 696 mg/g was achieved. The highest congo red adsorption was noticed for the non-activated sample modified with iron citrate, and the partition coefficient for this material equaled 171 dm3/g.

Abstract:The development of effective and practical adsorbents for eliminating pollutants still remains a significant challenge. Herein, we synthesized a novel magnetically separable composite, Co 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 /MIL-101-NH 2 , through the in-situ growth of MIL-101-NH 2 on magnetic nanoparticles, designed specifically for the removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. MIL-101-NH 2 possessed high BET surface area (240.485 m 2 •g −1 ) and facile magnetic separation function and can be swiftly separated (within 30 s) through an external magnetic field post-adsorption. The investigation systematically explored the influence of crucial parameters, including adsorbent dosage, pH, adsorption duration, temperature, and the presence of interfering ions, on CR adsorption performance. Findings indicate that CR adsorption adheres to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic analysis reveals the spontaneity, endothermic nature, and orderly progression of the adsorption process. Remarkably, the adsorbent with 0.1 g•L −1 boasts an impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 1756.19 mg•g −1 for CR at 298.15 K, establishing its competitive advantage. The reuse of the adsorbent over 5 cycles remains 78% of the initial adsorption. The CR adsorption mechanisms were elucidated, emphasizing the roles of π-π interactions, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, and metal coordination. Comparison with other dyes, such as methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), and exploration of adsorption performance in binary dye systems, demonstrates the superior capacity and selectivity of this adsorbent for CR. In conclusion, our magnetically separable metal–organic framework (MOF)based composite presents a versatile and effective solution for CR removal, with promising applications in water treatment and environmental remediation.

Abstract:In the present study, the potential of fungal cells ( Aspergillus tubingensis KJ650338 and Aspergillus pseudonomius MH279416) immobilized on activated carbon (AC) derived from rice husks for biosorption of dye in a continuous flow-packed bed column, was assessed. The effects of different process parameters including inlet Congo red concentration, feed flow rate, biosorbent dose, and internal column diameter on the breakthrough curves of the fixed bed sorption system were evaluated for the different treatment groups. Non-linear forms of well-established models such as Yoon-Nelson, modified dose-response, and Thomas were used to describe the data obtained from the breakthrough curves under different conditions. The results suggested that high biosorbent dose (4 g), low column diameter (1.5 cm), low initial Congo red concentration (50 mg/ml), and reduced flow rate (0.5 ml/min) were the best conditions for biosorption of Congo red from solution. The modified dose-response model had the best correlation with the obtained data (R 2 = 0.920–0.995) compared with Thomas model (R 2 = 0.645–0.982) and Yoon-Nelson (R 2 = 0.731–0.982). The maximum absorptive capacity (66.15 mg/g) was predicted at using modified dose-response (R 2 =0.987). These findings show that the dead biomasses of Aspergillus pseudonomius and Aspergillus tubingensis immobilized on powdered AC derived from rice husk could be cost-effective biosorbent for Congo red removal from aqueous solution in a fixed-bed column system.
