Abstract:We studied the effects of surface modification of bentonite with chitosan on its ability to adsorb Congo Red (CR) dye. The adsorption behavior of CR from aqueous solution onto raw (RB) and chitosan-modified (CMB) bentonite samples was investigated as a function of parameters such as initial CR concentration, contact time, pH and temperature. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to confirm the surface modification. Compared with RB, the adsorption capacity of CMB for CR was greatly enhanced. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption of CR on both RB and CMB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. From the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of CR on RB and CMB is spontaneous and endothermic. The results indicate that chitosan-modified bentonite provides an important advantage for CR dye adsorption over raw bentonite.

Abstract:Chitin adsorbents with different degrees of deacetylation (DDA) were prepared from crab shells waste and applied in adsorptive removal of dye Congo Red (CR). The adsorbents were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. The effects of solid-liquid ratio, initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, pH value, salt concentration, and DDA on adsorption were studied. It was indicated from orthogonal experiments that the removal of CR reached 99.28% under the optimum condition (DDA = 17.85%, pH = 5.40, and time = 20 h) at 300 K. The equilibrium data were plotted by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and described better with Langmuir model (Q(m) = 366.3 mg/g, 300 K) as the temperature increased and the adsorption kinetics was well fitted by pseudo-second-order equation. It was verified from the thermodynamic parameters (Delta G, Delta H, and Delta S) that the adsorption was spontaneous, exothermic and entropy decreasing. Functional groups including amino, acetyl amino, O-glycosides, and -O- on the pyranose ring of chitin were involved in adsorption as active sites through van der Waals force and hydrogen-bonding with the adsorbate. Moreover, CR adsorption on chitin with different DDA further revealed that the crystallinity of chitin played a more important role than amino group content.
Congo red adsorption on shell powder and chitosan-coated shell powder biosorbents: experiments and theoretical calculation

Abstract:Shell powder (SP) with chitosan (CS) immobilized was applied as a composite biosorbent (CS-SP) for adsorptive removal of Congo red from aqueous solution. The materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Dye adsorption onto SP and CS-SP was investigated under varied conditions such as chitosan content, initial dye concentration, pH, salt concentration, and temperature. The optimum CS content was determined as 15 wt%, under which CS-SP displayed a fine coating structure and a greater adsorption capacity of 258.53 mg/g compared with 36.50 mg/g for SP at 30 degrees C. The composite adsorbent maintained its performance in high-salinity, acidic or alkaline environment, and exhibited excellent reusability throughout five-recycle regeneration. The dynamic data conformed to pseudo-second-order and Elovich models while the equilibrium isotherms followed Langmuir and Temkin models, which revealed that chemisorption was involved in the adsorption mechanism. Besides, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for CS-SP reached 263.85, 283.29, 322.58 mg/g at 30 degrees C, 40 degrees C, and 50 degrees C, respectively, and adsorption on CS-SP was verified to be endothermic and spontaneous from thermodynamic study. The results indicated that the prepared CS-SP biosorbent is quite promising for dye wastewater treatment.
Reusable kaolin impregnated aminated chitosan composite beads for efficient removal of Congo red dye: isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics studies

Abstract:In this investigation, Kaolin (K) impregnated aminated chitosan (AM-CTS) composite beads were fabricated with multi-features including low-cost, high performance, renewable and ease of separation for adsorption of anionic Congo red (CR) dye. Characterization tools such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, BET, XPS and Zeta potential were thoroughly employed to confirm the successful formulation process. The results revealed that K@ AM-CTS composite beads displayed higher specific surface area (128.52 m2/g), while the thermal stability was prominently improved compared to pure AM-CTS. In addition, the adsorption equilibrium of CR dye was accomplished rapidly and closely gotten within 45 min. The removal efficiency was significantly enriched and reached 90.7% with increasing kaolin content up to 0.75%, compared to 20.3 and 58% for pristine kaolin and AM-CTS, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption process obeyed the pseudo-first order kinetic model, while data were agreed with the Freundlich isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 104 mg/g at pH 6. Furthermore, D-R isotherm model demonstrated the physical adsorption process of CR dye, which includes the electrostatic interactions, ion exchange and H-bonding. Thermodynamics evidenced the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Interestingly, the developed K@AM-CTS composites beads showed better reusability for eight consecutive cycles, suggesting their feasible applicability for adsorptive removal anionic dyes from polluted aquatic bodies.

Abstract:In this study, a Sodium alginate-g-poly (acrylamide-clay)/TiO 2 hydrogel nanocomposite [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] was synthesized using the biopolymer sodium alginate (SA), acrylamide (AM), and bentonite clay (Bn) as hybrid materials embedded with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) for the removal of toxic Congo Red (CR) dye from an aqueous solution. The [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] nanocomposite has been described on the basis of thermal stability, morphological analysis, estimation of functional group, and crystalline/amorphous character by TGA, EFSEM/EDX, TEM, FT-IR, and XRD analysis, respectively. The effects of operational parameters toward the CR dye adsorption on [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ], including contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, initial pH, and temperature were investigated. The maximum adsorption efficiency was found to be 185.12 mg/g for [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] in 100 mg/L of solution CR at pH 6.0 within 1 h. The equilibrium isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics parameters of adsorption were examined, and results showed that the isotherm fitted the Freundlich model and the kinetics adsorption model of CR followed pseudo-first-order, thus indicating physisorption of anionic-CR onto the sorbent due to the development of an electrostatic attraction bond. Thermodynamic parameters for [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] have values (ΔG and ΔH) reflecting the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption processes. Moreover, [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)/TiO 2 ] presented outstanding excellent reusability and recyclability with a relatively best removal percentage as compared to [SA-g-p(AM-Bn)] and suggested their applicability towards the textile industry and water purification purposes.

Abstract:The morphology and intermolecular interaction are two of the most important factors in the design of highly efficient dye adsorbent in the industry. Millimeter-sized, bead-type, bio-based lignin/chitosan (Lig/CS) adsorbent was designed for the removal of Congo red (CR), based on the electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding, which were synthesized through the emulsification of the chitosan/lignin mixture followed by chemical cross-linking. The effects of the lignin/chitosan mass ratio, initial pH, temperature, concentration, and contact time on the adsorption were thoroughly investigated. The highest adsorption capacity (173 mg/g) was obtained for the 20 wt% Lig/CS beads, with a removal rate of 86.5%. To investigate the adsorption mechanism and recyclability, an evaluation of the kinetic model and an adsorption/desorption experiment were conducted. The adsorption of CR on Lig/CS beads followed the type 1 pseudo-second-order model, and the removal rate for CR was still above 90% at five cycles.

Removal of Congo red dyes from aqueous solutions by porous γ-alumina nanoshells

Abstract:Porous alumina has been shown to be an excellent adsorbent for Congo Red (CR) dye. In this work, highly porous g-Al2O3 nanoshells were synthesized from alumina coated carbon black (CB) obtained from a new deposition technique and used for removal of CR dye from aqueous solutions. Adsorption experiments were conducted in a batch mode and a series of parameters were investigated, including contact time, initial dye concentrations, ionic strength and pH of the solutions. It was found that equilibrium for CR adsorption can be reached within 30 min, much faster than reported by other studies in the literature on similar adsorbents. It was also found that the adsorption capacity of Al2O3 nanoshells is 44.8 % higher than that of alumina/CB. The adsorption capacity of Al2O3 nanoshells was more favorable at lower pH, and the optimal adsorption ability was achieved at pH 4.0 with a removal efficiency at 98.6 %. The Al2O3 nanoshells have a maximum adsorption capacity of 370.4 mg g-1 (25 °C; pH 7; no salt added), better than or comparable to those reported in the literature. A pseudo-second-order kinetics model can best fit the kinetics of CR adsorption, which follows the Langmuir isotherm. The high adsorption capacity is attributed to the strong hydrogen-bonding interactions between the anionic dye and Al2O3 nanoshells surface as well as to the electrostatic interactions between CR dye and the Al2O3 nanoshells.

Abstract:In this study, a microporous activated carbon (AC) with excellent performance was successfully prepared by KOH impregnation activation method using edamame shell as raw material. The synthesized AC with high specific surface area and pore volume can be effectively used for the adsorption and removal of Congo red (CR) from wastewater. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta potential were used to characterize the structure of activated carbon. The ultra-high surface area and well-developed pore volume provided sufficient adsorption sites for CR adsorption, and the maximum adsorption effect of AC on CR was up to 1509.60 mg/g at 25 °C. The effects of pH, contact time, temperature and adsorbent mass on CR adsorption were investigated. In addition, the effects of different cations (Ca 2+ , Na + , K + , NH 4 + ) on the CR adsorption of anionic dyes were focused by adding different concentrations (10 mM, 20 mM, 30 mM) of cations. The results showed that Ca 2+ , Na + and K + had a significant promotion effect on the CR adsorption of AC, among which Ca 2+ had the most obvious promotion effect. Through model fitting, CR adsorption by AC conforms to Liu adsorption isotherm model and Elovich kinetic model. The results showed that the addition of cations could substantially improve the adsorption capacity of AC on the anionic dye CR, which has potential application in the field of dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A cellulose-based bio-absorbent with various and plenty of amino groups was successfully prepared from corn stalk to achieve quantitative removal of Congo red from wastewater with wide pH values (5 ≤ pH ≤ 10). The maximum removal amount was 8.0 mmol·g-1 (5572 mg·g-1) under pH = 6.0 and 45 °C, which was obviously higher than reported absorbents. Investigation on dynamic adsorption and recyclability in authentic wastewater found that the removal efficiency of Congo red was >98 % within 180 min and decreased slightly in industrial water after five cycles, denoting this adsorbent with great potential for environmental application. The characterization results proved that 7.58 mmol·g-1 of different amino groups (-NH2, -NH- and -NR2) were introduced on adsorbent surface by two steps of modification and were the major functional groups for adsorption of Congo red. The inferred adsorption mechanism revealed that Congo red could be adsorbed equivalently on the amino groups by strong electrostatic interactions or hydrogen bonds. Different amino groups played different roles in adsorption due to great differences in protonation ability in 5 ≤ pH ≤ 10. The study was expected to high-efficiently remove Congo red from acidic or alkaline wastewater, and offered an alternative strategy for biowaste treatment of corn stalks in a high value-added manner.

Effective removal of Congo red from aqueous solutions using ethylenediamine-modified wheat straw as adsorbent

Abstract:In this study, ethylenediamine (EDA)-modified wheat straw (EMWS) was prepared and used as an efficient adsorbent for removing Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. Adsorption of CR by EMWS was examined through static adsorption experiments to determine the effect of contact time, initial pH values, particle size of the adsorbent, solution concentration, and temperature. As pH ranged from 4.0 to 10.0, CR adsorption by the EMWS remained considerably elevated. The equilibrium adsorption capacity was determined to be 97.92 mg·g −1 for a CR concentration of 400 mg·L −1 , pH of 4.0, temperature of 318 K, and EMWS dose of 2 g·L −1 , which was found to be comparable to other materials used for CR adsorption. Following that, optimal conditions were used to conduct isothermal, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies. In the adsorption process of CR, the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics provided the best fit, indicating the presence of both physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms. Electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding were primarily responsible for CR adsorption onto the EMWS. Based on thermodynamic investigations, the adsorption of CR on EMWS is determined to be spontaneous (Δ G < 0) and endothermic (Δ H = 60.83 kJ·mol −1 ), while also exhibiting an increase in disorder (Δ S = 289.9 J·mol −1 ·K −1 ). The elution was carried out using 0.20 M HCl, followed by washing the EMWS with water, resulting in no loss of functionality. This study suggests that EMWS possesses the potential to serve as a feasible and efficient adsorbent for CR removal in wastewater.

Abstract:The present investigation is aimed at fabricating a cheap and efficient adsorbent for the removal of refractory dyestuffs from wastewater. By using waste aluminium polishing solution as the raw material, a composite hydrated alumina (CHA) was successfully prepared and its properties were characterized by the methods of FTIR, SEM, EDS, BET, TGA , and XPS. It was shown that the resulting two-layer adsorbent exhibits a flower-like shape, in which, alumina acts as the core and the surface is modified by phosphate groups and hydrogen bonds in the outer layer. Various functional groups on the surface provide multiple interactions with anionic dyestuffs such as Congo red (CR) and Reactive blue (RB). However, due to the contained N- double bond in the molecular structure in CR, the adsorbent exhibits an especially excellent selectivity and adsorption capacity for the removal of CR, which is caused by the formation of the hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of CHA and the azo and aromatic rings in CR molecule. The obtained results provide a novel approach to remove refractory organic pollutants from wastewater by using a cheap adsorbent derived from industrial waste.

Abstract:A tetraethylenepentamine modified magnetic cellulose nanocrystal composites (Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA) was prepared by the coprecipitation method and Schiff base reaction, which could adsorb Congo red (CR) efficiently. The morphology and structure of the nanoparticles were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), zeta potential (ZETA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Subsequently, the Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA adsorbed CR was investigated by comparative experiments, selective adsorption experiments, effect of pH, effect of adsorbent dosage, adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics parameters, adsorption kinetics, leaching experiments, desorption and reusability experiments. Results revealed the fact that the nanoparticles showed excellent adsorption capacity of CR (1049 mg g−1) due to the abundant hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface of the Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA. The adsorption process was best described by the the Langmuir equation and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the Fe3O4@CNC-TEPA loaded with CR can be recycled with NaOH solution easily, which can be used repeatedly for CR adsorption. After six cycles, the adsorption capacity was still about 81.5% of the original particles'. Abstract:Developing an environmentally friendly adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and economic advantages is crucial for the treatment of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated wastewater. In this study, Bentonite (Bt), which is widely distributed in nature, was used to prepare a new type of chitosan (CS)-grafted polymerized aluminum-pillared bentonite (i.e., Al@Bt): CS@Al@Bt. This new material effectively addresses the issues of chitosan's poor mechanical strength, limited load capacity, and the weak adsorption properties of raw bentonite for Cd. The effects of synthesis conditions on Cd adsorption by modified bentonite were investigated through batch experiments. The adsorption mechanism was revealed by characterization tests such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption experiments, Scanning and Transmission electron microscopy (SEM-TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that compared to raw Bt, when the ratio of Al in polymerized aluminum to the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of Bt was increased to 5 (i.e., Al/CEC=5), the specific surface area (SSA) of Bt increased from 78.46 m2/g to 195.99 m2/g. Additionally, the interlayer spacing and total pore volume increased by 1.22 and 1.13 times, respectively. After grafting chitosan onto Al@Bt, CS@Al@Bt reached adsorption equilibrium rapidly within 15 min, achieving a removal rate of up to 99.82% (initial concentration of Cd(II) was 20 mg/L, and the solid-liquid ratio was 1 g/L). Additionally, CS@Al@Bt showed good adsorption performance over a wide pH range. The rich pore structure of CS@Al@Bt and the complexation between amino (-NH 2 ) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups with Cd(II) were the main mechanisms for the removal of Cd(II) from the solution. The application showed that CS@Al@Bt effectively reduced Cd-containing mining wastewater from class V to class II quality, underscoring its significant potential for treating Cd(II)-contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:Developing a green adsorbent to deal with Congo red dyes from wastewater was a significative exploration. In the work, we prepared an ionic liquid modified magnetic cellulose/sepiolite composite FSCS-cl-p(MBA-co-BVI) via a simple method, the process including the magnetic sepiolite/cellulose complex grafting the polymer of MBA and BVI. The high specific surface area of sepiolite and cellulose, the electropositivity of ionic liquids [Bvim][Br] and magnetic response of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoparticles jointly promoted the adsorption performance of adsorbents. The composites were characterized by SEM, XRD, EDS, FTIR, BET, TGA and VSM, the adsorption performances were evaluated containing the influence factors, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics. In brief, the adsorbents were suitable within the pH range of 3–9 and reach adsorption equilibrium during 120 min. Meanwhile, the maximum adsorption capacity for CR was up to 1374.10 mg/g at 45 °C. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were well-fitted to pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of FSCS-cl-p(MBA-co-BVI) for CR could be interpreted as electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction. Based on results, the as-obtained adsorbents were effective, inexpensive and expected to be applied to the treatment of dyestuff.

Abstract:In this study, we employed a straightforward in-situ synthesis strategy to fabricate multi-site adsorption functional composites known as aminated chitosan@ZIF-8 (AmCs@ZIF-8) for the efficient removal of Cu(II) and Congo red. The AmCs@ZIF-8 adsorbed Cu(II) at pH 5 and Congo red at pH 3 with excellent removal efficiency values of 94 % and 100 % respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Congo red are obtained as 785 mg g −1 and 1156 mg g −1 , respectively. Interestingly, AmCs@ZIF-8 composites exhibited an excellent removal efficiency (>80 %) after reusing them for four sequential cycles. Analysis of the adsorption isotherm and kinetic data indicated that chemisorption primarily governed the adsorption of Cu(II) and Congo red by AmCs@ZIF-8. Furthermore, we elucidated the adsorption energy of Cu(II) and Congo red on the AmCs@ZIF-8 composite through density functional theory. Specifically, the adsorption energy values for Cu(II) with AmCs and ZIF-8 were −20.907 and −57.809 kcal·mol −1 , and −26.514 and −16.242 kcal·mol −1 for Congo red, respectively. The efficient adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) and Congo red on the AmCs@ZIF-8 composite can be attributed to the synergistic effects of chelation, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding through the analysis of experimental characterization and theoretical calculation. Therefore, AmCs@ZIF-8 composites elevate the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Congo red in a single-component system and exhibit high removal efficiency (>90 %) in the context of the Cu(II)-Congo red binary system.

Abstract:Batch experiments were carried on adsorption of the Congo red with the attapulgite activated carbon composite material.The influence of adsorption time,adsorbent dosage,temperature,pH and adsorbent regeneration were studied.The results showed that the adsorption of Congo red on attapulgite activated carbon composite material achieved equilibrium through 60 min at 25 ℃,the initial concentration of solution 50 mg/L in neutral Congo red solution.It’s a effective method to use attapulgite activated carbon composite material as an absorbent to Processe the waste water which contains the Congo red.

Abstract:Adsorption is a popular water treatment technique that encounters several challenges in practical applications, such as rapidly achieved adsorption equilibrium and selective recovery. In this work, a quaternary-ammonium-salt modified chitosan adsorbent with porous structure (porous CS-CTA) was obtained conveniently by removing embedded inorganic nanoparticles from a previously well-prepared chitosan-based magnetic composite adsorbent (CS-CTA-MCM). Compared with CS-CTA-MCM and CS-CTA without porous structures, porous CS-CTA shows clearly improved and rapid adsorption of both methyl orange and chromium [Cr(VI)] from water because of its larger specific surface area. It also presents significantly enhanced selective adsorption of methyl orange over Cr(VI) in their aqueous mixture at neutral and alkaline conditions, an outcome that is ascribed to the stronger affinity of methyl orange to porous CS-CTA compared with that of Cr(VI). The porous microstructure of CS-CTA results in its higher adsorption efficiency in the removal of those two pollutants in comparison with the other adsorbents.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment is of utmost importance in providing all equitable and safe drinking water. In the present study, a chitosan impregnated sugarcane bagasse biochar SCNC biocomposite has been synthesized for the removal of Congo red (CR) dye from an aqueous solution. The SCNC biocomposite was thoroughly characterized through Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) and N 2 adsorption isotherm, point of zero charge (pH PZC ), elemental analysis, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis. Moreover, SCNC biocomposite was further employed to remove CR dye from the aqueous solution in batch mode. The SCNC biocomposite could remove more than 95.0% of CR at an initial concentration of (100mgL − 1 ), adsorbent dosage (0.05 g), time (200 min), pH ~ 3. The SCNC biocomposite achieved maximum adsorption capacity of 170mgg − 1 . The equilibrium adsorption data for CR dye were best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model with R 2 , 0.999. The kinetic and isotherm were statistically investigated using the chi-square statistic (χ2 ), mean square error (MSE), and the sum of squares error (SSE) Because of the higher correlation coefficient (R 2 ≥ 0.999) and lower error functions, the equilibrium CR adsorption isotherms for a single-dye system fit Langmuir and the PSO kinetic model. The thermodynamic studies revealed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption of CR dye onto SCNC biocomposite. The SCNC biocomposite can be regenerated up to the 5th cycle successfully. The mechanism of CR adsorption onto SCNC was elucidated.

Abstract:Attapulgite (APT) is widely used in wastewater treatment due to its exceptional adsorption and colloidal properties, as well as its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness. However, low-grade APT generally limits its performance. Here, a colloid mill-assisted ultrasonic-fractional centrifugal purification method was developed to refine low-grade APT. This process successfully separated and removed impurity minerals such as quartz and dolomite from the raw ore, resulting in a refined APT purity increase from 16.9% to 60% with a specific surface area of 135.5 m2∙g−1. Further modifying of the refined APT was carried out through the hydrothermal method using varying dosages of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), resulting in the production of four different APT adsorbents denoted as QAPT-n (n = CTAC mole number) ranging from 0.5 to 5 mmol. Using Congo red (CR) as the target pollutant, the QAPT-5 sample exhibited the best adsorption capacity with the maximum quantity of 1652.2 mg∙g−1 in a neutral solution at 30 °C due to the highest surface charge (zeta potential = 8.25 mV). Moreover, the QAPT-5 pellets (~2.0 g adsorbent) shaped by the alginate-assisted molding method removed more than 96% of 200 mL aqueous solution containing 200 mg∙L−1 CR and maintained this efficiency in 10 adsorption–elution cycles, which exhibited the promising practical application.

Abstract:This study presents the first known exploration of Congo red dye (CR) adsorption by a polycationic Fe/Al Di-metal nanostructured composite (PDFe/Al) synthesised using Fe(III) and Al(III) recovered from authentic acid mine drainage (AMD). The PDFe/Al successfully removed CR from the aqueous solution. The mineralogical, microstructural, and chemical properties of the synthesised PDFe/Al adsorbent (before and after adsorption) were studied using state-of-the-art analytical instruments. The optimum conditions were observed to be 100 mg·L−1 CR, 1 g of the PDFe/Al in 500 mL adsorbate solution, 20 min of shaking, pH = 3–8, and a temperature of 35 °C. At optimised conditions, the PDFe/Al showed ≥99% removal efficacy for CR dye and an exceptionally high Langmuir adsorption capacity of 411 mg·g−1. Furthermore, a diffusion-limited adsorption mechanism was observed, with two distinct surfaces involved in the adsorption of CR from an aqueous solution. It was determined that the adsorption of CR induced internal strain and deformation within the matrices and interlayers of the PDFe/Al which resulted in a marked increase in the adsorbent pore surface area and pore volume. The remarkably high adsorption capacity could be attributed to the high surface area. A regeneration study showed that the adsorbent could be reused more than four times for the adsorption of CR. The findings from this study demonstrated the feasibility of recovering valuable minerals from toxic and hazardous AMD and demonstrated their potential for the treatment of industrial wastewaters.
