Abstract:Most of the physical properties of substances depend to a greater or lesser on isotopic composition. 95% or more of substances are mixture of different isotopes. We analyze and overview the main characteristics of the new isotope - based materials. Mainly the results of isotope - substituted substances based on lithium hydride and carbon are used. LiH has the largest isotopic shift. Carbon, being the second element after silicon on Earth, has unusually wide range of allotropic compounds with completely different physical properties that a highly dependent on isotopic composition. The use of our object allows the investigation of not only the isotope effects in lattice dynamics (vibrational, elastic and thermal properties), but also the influence of such effects on the electronic excitations (for example, the renormalization of the band - to - band transition energy Eg). We emphasize that the study of the isotope effect remains at the forefront not only in materials science, but also nuclear and high energy physics. The latter one is associated with the non - accelerating manifestation of strong nuclear interaction as well as the origin of mass in Nature.

Abstract:The precise position of a spectral line emitted by an atomic system depends on the mass of the atomic nucleus and is therefore different for isotopes belonging to the same element. The possible presence of an isotope effect followed from Bohr's atomic theory of 1913, but it took several years before it was confirmed experimentally. Its early history involves the childhood not only of the quantum atom, but also of the concept of isotopy. Bohr's prediction of the isotope effect was apparently at odds with early attempts to distinguish between isotopes by means of their optical spectra. However, in 1920 the effect was discovered in HCl molecules, which gave rise to a fruitful development in molecular spectroscopy. The first detection of an atomic isotope effect was no less important, as it was by this means that the heavy hydrogen isotope deuterium was discovered in 1932. The early development of isotope spectroscopy led to successes as well as problems. At the end of the paper I briefly comment on the relationship between theory, experiment and prediction in this area of spectral physics.

Abstract:Isotope effects on heat conduction and convection have been known for decades. However, whether thermal radiation can be isotopically engineered remains an open question. Here, we predict over three-orders-ofmagnitude variation of radiative heat flow with varying isotopic compositions for polar dielectrics at room temperature. We reveal this as an isotope mass effect which induces phonon line shift and broadening that in turn affect phonon-mediated resonant absorption both in the near and far field. In contrast, the isotope effect is negligible for metals and doped semiconductors which largely depend on free carriers. We also discuss the role of temperature with regard to surface mode excitation.
Boron Isotope Effects on Raman Scattering in Bulk BN, BP, and BAs: A Density-Functional Theory Study

Abstract:For many materials, Raman spectra are intricately structured and provide valuable information about compositional stoichiometry and crystal quality. Here we use density-functional theory calculations, mass approximation, and the Raman intensity weighted $\Gamma$-point density of state approach to analyze Raman scattering and vibrational modes in zincblende, wurtzite, and hexagonal BX (X = N, P, and As) structures. The influence of crystal structure and boron isotope disorder on Raman line shapes is examined. Our results demonstrate that long-range Coulomb interactions significantly influence the evolution of Raman spectra in cubic and wurtzite BN compounds. With the evolution of the compositional rate from $^{11}$B to $^{10}$B, a shift toward higher frequencies, as well as the maximum broadening and asymmetry of the Raman peaks, is expected around the 1:1 ratio. The calculated results are in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. This study serves as a guide for understanding how crystal symmetry and isotope disorder affect phonons in BX compounds, which are relevant to quantum single-photon emitters, heat management, and crystal quality assessments.

Abstract:The ability to generate materials with an enriched isotopic abundance, that is one that differs from natural abundance, is critical in terms of technology. Isotopes are used in a wide range of applications, including radioactive tracers, nondestructive tests, radiotherapy in human medicine, nuclear fuels, and isotope-substituted compounds for chemistry and biology research, as well as environmental geochemical signature tracers. A commonly discussed research topic is the isotopic separation of various elements—uranium, hydrogen, lithium, and iodine, among many others. Among these isotopes, lithium isotopes are especially important in various applications including strategic areas. These isotopes are light and hence their separation techniques are not very obvious. Herein, all the main categories of Li isotope separation are reviewed in depth with a focus on electrochemical technologies for stable lithium isotope separation.

Abstract:Systems with a focused ion beam, using gas field ion sources, are described. The principles of operation and ways of formation of these sources, in which the effective ionization region is determined by sizes of a single atom, are considered in the historical context. The described systems have a wide range of applications, both in the field of scanning ion microscopy in combination with various analytical methods and in the field of high-resolution modification of electrical, optical, magnetic, and other properties of materials. This modification, based on ion-induced changes in the structure of material, is most pronounced in crystalline semiconductors, superconductors, and magnets.

Recent advancements in atomic many-body methods for high-precision studies of isotope shifts

Abstract:The development of atomic many-body methods, capable of incorporating electron correlation effects accurately, is required for isotope shift (IS) studies. In combination with precise measurements, such calculations help to extract nuclear charge radii differences, and to probe for signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. We review here a few recently-developed methods in the relativistic many-body perturbation theory (RMBPT) and relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory frameworks for calculations of IS factors in the highly charged ions (HCIs), and neutral or singly-charged ions, respectively. The results are presented for a wide range of atomic systems in order to demonstrate the interplay between quantum electrodynamics (QED) and electron correlation effects. In view of this, we start our discussions with the RMBPT calculations for a few HCIs by rigorously treating QED effects; then we outline methods to calculate IS factors in the one-valence atomic systems using two formulations of the RCC approach. Then we present calculations for two valence atomic systems, by employing the Fock-space RCC methods. For completeness, we briefly discuss theoretical input required for the upcoming experiments, their possibilities to probe nuclear properties and implications to fundamental physics studies.

Orbital physics: glorious past, bright future

Abstract:Transition metal (TM) compounds present a very big class of materials with quite diverse properties. There are among them insulators, metals, systems with insulator-metal transitions; most magnetic systems are TM compounds; there are among them also (high-Tc) superconductors. Their very rich properties are largely determined by the strong interplay of different degrees of freedom: charge; spin; orbital; lattice. Orbital effects play a very important role in these systems -- and not only in them! The study of this field, initiated by Goodenough almost 70 years ago, turned out to be very fruitful and produced a lot of important results. In this short review I first discuss the basics of orbital physics, summarize the main achievements in this big field, in which Goodenough played a pivotal role and which are nowadays widely used to explain many properties of TM compounds. In the main part of the text I discuss novel developments and perspectives in orbital physics, which is still a very active field of research, constantly producing new surprises.

Abstract:Amorphous inorganics have attracted much attention because of their long-range disordered structure with advantageous functional properties. In this minireview, novel advances in amorphous inorganics (e.g., metal, metallic oxide, and metallic salts) and their preparation strategies are highlighted and summarized. The intrinsic atomic structure of amorphous materials in short-, medium-, and long-range orientations is discussed. The relationships between their structural features (e.g., disorderliness, defects, metastability, isotropy, and flexible structure) and related properties are demonstrated. Their current characterization techniques for amorphous structures are presented as well. The applications of these amorphous inorganics are illustrated, covering the fields of mechanical, electrical, biomedical, and catalytical materials. Finally, future challenges and perspectives in the field of amorphous inorganics are discussed, and this review emphasizes the unique and important role of amorphous inorganics in the development of more advanced materials. Amorphous inorganics have attracted much attention because of their long-range disordered structure with advantageous functional properties.
Far infrared and Radio emission in dusty starburst galaxies

Abstract:We revisit the nature of the FIR/Radio correlation by means of the most recent models for star forming galaxies. We model the IR emission with our population synthesis code, GRASIL (Silva et al. 1998). As for the radio emission, we revisit the simple model of Condon & Yin (1990). We find that a tightFIR/Radio correlation is natural when the synchrotron mechanism dominates over the inverse Compton, and the electrons cooling time is shorter than the fading time of the supernova rate. Observations indicate that both these conditions are met in star forming galaxies. However since the radio non thermal emission is delayed, deviations are expected both in the early phases of a starburst, when the radio thermal component dominates, and in the post-starburst phase, when the bulk of the NT component originates from less massive stars. This delay allows the analysis of obscured starbursts with a time resolution of a few tens of Myrs, unreachable with other star formation indicators. We suggest to complement the analysis of the deviations from the FIR/Radio correlation with the radio slope to obtain characteristic parameters of the burst. The analysis of a sample of compact ULIRGs shows that they are intense but transient starbursts, to which one should not apply usual SF indicators devised for constant SF rates. We also discuss the possibility of using the q- radio slope diagram to asses the presence of obscured AGN. A firm prediction of the models is an apparent radio excess during the post-starburst phase, which seems to be typical of a class of star forming galaxies in rich cluster cores. We discuss how deviations from the correlation, due to the evolutionary status of the starburst, affect the technique of photometric redshift determination widely used for high-z sources.

Abstract:The novel isotope and magnetic effects on two level system echoes in glasses observed by Nagel et al.(<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Phys.Rev.Lett" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. 92, 245511 (2004)) provide unique experimental insight into the nature of tunneling systems in amorphous solids. We show their observations are consistent with tunneling systems being extended systems having of order 100 moving units, as predicted by theory (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Phys.Rev.Lett" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. 87, 195901 (2001)). The numerous nuclear quadrupole interactions within a tunneling center explain the magnitude of the magnetic and frequency dependence observed in deuterated glycerol. The extended nature of two level systems explains why a small residual effect can still be observed in regular glycerol even with its low abundance of quadrupolar nuclei.

Abstract:Ab initio simulations that account for nuclear quantum effects have been used to examine the order-disorder transition in squaric acid, a prototypical H-bonded antiferroelectric crystal. Our simulations reproduce the >100 K difference in transition temperature observed upon deuteration as well as the strong geometrical isotope effect observed on intermolecular separations within the crystal. We find that collective transfer of protons along the H-bonding chains - facilitated by quantum mechanical tunneling - is critical to the order-disorder transition and the geometrical isotope effect. This sheds light on the origin of isotope effects and the importance of tunneling in squaric acid which likely extends to other H-bonded ferroelectrics.

Abstract:Isotopic fractionation in the photodissociation of N2 could explain the considerable variation in the 14N/15N ratio in different regions of our galaxy. We previously proposed that such an isotope effect is due to coupling of photoexcited bound valence and Rydberg electronic states in the frequency range where there is strong state mixing. We here identify features of the role of the mass in the dynamics through a time-dependent quantum-mechanical simulation. The photoexcitation of N2 is by an ultrashort pulse so that the process has a sharply defined origin in time and so that we can monitor the isolated molecule dynamics in time. An ultrafast pulse is necessarily broad in frequency and spans several excited electronic states. Each excited molecule is therefore not in a given electronic state but in a superposition state. A short time after excitation, there is a fairly sharp onset of a mass-dependent large population transfer when wave packets on two different electronic states in the same molecule overlap. This coherent overlap of the wave packets on different electronic states in the region of strong coupling allows an effective transfer of population that is very mass dependent. The extent of the transfer depends on the product of the populations on the two different electronic states and on their relative phase. It is as if two molecules collide but the process occurs within one molecule, a molecule that is simultaneously in both states. An analytical toy model recovers the (strong) mass and energy dependence.
Effect of quantization of vibrations on the structural properties of crystals

Abstract:We study the structural effects produced by the quantization of vibrational degrees of freedom in periodic crystals at zero temperature. To this end we introduce a methodology based on mapping a suitable subspace of the vibrational manifold and solving the Schroedinger equation in it. A number of increasingly accurate approximations ranging from the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) to the vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) method and the exact solution are described. A thorough analysis of the approximations is presented for model monoatomic and hydrogen-bonded chains, and results are presented for a linear HF chain where the potential energy surface is obtained via first-principles electronic structure calculations. We focus on quantum nuclear effects on the lattice constant, and show that the VSCF is an excellent approximation, meaning that correlation between modes is not extremely important. The QHA is excellent for covalently-bonded, mildly anharmonic systems, but it fails for hydrogen-bonded ones. In the latter, the zero-point energy exhibits a non-analytic behavior at the lattice constant where the H-atoms center, which leads to a spurious secondary minimum in the quantum-corrected energy curve. An inexpensive anharmonic appoximation of non-interacting modes appears to produce rather good results for hydrogen-bonded chains, for small system sizes. However, it converges to the incorrect QHA results for increasing size. Isotope effects are studied for the first-principles HF chain. We show how the lattice constant and the HF distance increase with decreasing mass, and how the QHA proves to be insufficient to reproduce this behavior.

Abstract:Isotopic dependence of the Casimir force is key to probing new physics and pushing novel technologies at the micro and nanoscale, but is largely unexplored. In 2002, an isotope effect of 10−4 was estimated for metals—orders of magnitude beyond the experimental resolution. Here, by employing the Lifshitz theory, we reveal a significant isotope effect of over 10−1 for polar dielectrics. This effect arises from the isotope-mass-induced line shift of the zone-center optical phonons and is insensitive to the linewidth. We perform numerical analyses on both the imaginary and real-frequency axes, and derive analytical formulas for predicting the isotope effect. The three-orders-of-magnitude difference between polar dielectrics and metals arises from the distinct isotopic dependence of the phonon and plasma frequencies. Our work opens up a new avenue for engineering forces at small scales and may also facilitate the quest for the fifth force of nature.
