Abstract:With the production of polar molecules in the quantum regime, long-range dipolar interactions are expected to facilitate understanding of strongly interacting many-body quantum systems and to realize lattice spin models for exploring quantum magnetism. In ordinary atomic systems, where contact interactions require wavefunction overlap, effective spin interactions on a lattice can be mediated by tunnelling, through a process referred to as superexchange; however, the coupling is relatively weak and is limited to nearest-neighbour interactions. In contrast, dipolar interactions exist even in the absence of tunnelling and extend beyond nearest neighbours. This allows coherent spin dynamics to persist even for gases with relatively high entropy and low lattice filling. Measured effects of dipolar interactions in ultracold molecular gases have been limited to the modification of inelastic collisions and chemical reactions. Here we use dipolar interactions of polar molecules pinned in a three-dimensional optical lattice to realize a lattice spin model. Spin is encoded in rotational states of molecules that are prepared and probed by microwaves. Resonant exchange of rotational angular momentum between two molecules realizes a spin-exchange interaction. The dipolar interactions are apparent in the evolution of the spin coherence, which shows oscillations in addition to an overall decay of the coherence. The frequency of these oscillations, the strong dependence of the spin coherence time on the lattice filling factor and the effect of a multipulse sequence designed to reverse dynamics due to two-body exchange interactions all provide evidence of dipolar interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the suppression of loss in weak lattices due to a continuous quantum Zeno mechanism. Measurements of these tunnelling-induced losses allow us to determine the lattice filling factor independently. Our work constitutes an initial exploration of the behaviour of many-body spin models with direct, long-range spin interactions and lays the groundwork for future studies of many-body dynamics in spin lattices.

Abstract:The thermodynamics of the lattice model of intercalation of ions in crystals is considered in the mean field approximation. Pseudospin formalism is used for the description of interaction of electrons with ions and the possibility of hopping of intercalated ions between different positions is taken into account. Phase diagrams are built. It is shown that the effective interaction between intercalated ions can lead to phase separation or to appearance of modulated phase (it depends on filling of the electron energy band). At high values of the parameter of ion transfer the ionic subsystem can pass to the superfluid-like state.

Abstract:Interactions between the different degrees of freedom form the basis of many manifestations of intriguing physics in condensed matter. In this respect, quantifying the dynamics of normal modes that themselves arise from these interactions and how they interact with other excitations is of central importance. Of the different types of coupling that are often important, spin-lattice coupling is relevant to several sub-fields of condensed matter physics; examples include spintronics, high-TC superconductivity, and topological materials. While theories of materials where spin-lattice coupling is relevant can sometimes be used to infer the magnitude and character of this interaction, experimental approaches that can directly measure it are rare and incomplete. Here we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction to directly access the spin-lattice coupling by measuring both ultrafast atomic motion and the associated spin dynamics following the excitation of a coherent electromagnon by an intense THz pulse in a multiferroic hexaferrite. Comparing the dynamics of the two different components, one striking outcome is the different phase shifts relative to the driving field. This phase shift provides insight into the excitation process of such a coupled mode. This direct observation of combined lattice and magnetization dynamics paves the way to access the mode-selective spin-lattice coupling strength, which remains a missing fundamental parameter for ultrafast control of magnetism and is relevant to a wide variety of correlated electron physics.

Non-Perturbative Determination of Isotope-induced Anomalous Vibrational Physics

Abstract:In general, vibrational physics has been well described by quantum perturbation theory to provide footprint characteristics for common crystals. However, despite weak phonon anharmonicity, the recently discovered cubic crystals have shown anomalous vibrational dynamics with elusive fundamental origin. Here, we developed a non-perturbative ab initio approach, in together with spectroscopy and high-pressure experiments, to successfully determine the exact dynamic evolutions of the vibrational physics for the first time. We found that the local fluctuation and coupling isotopes significantly dictate the vibrational spectra, through the Brillouin zone folding that has been previously ignored in literature. By decomposing vibrational spectra into individual isotope eigenvectors, we observed both positive and negative contributions to Raman intensity from constitutional atoms (10B, 11B, 75As or 31P). Importantly, our non-perturbative theory predicts that a novel vibrational resonance appears at high hydrostatic pressure due to broken translational symmetry, which was indeed verified by experimental measurement under a pressure up to 31.5 GPa. Our study develops fundamental understandings for the anomalous lattice physics under the failure of quantum perturbation theory and provides a new approach in exploring novel transport phenomena for materials of extreme properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the structure and dynamics for a trilayer Yukawa crystal. We firstly studied the optimal lattice structure by comparing lattice interaction energy from different lattice distribution, after that, we did the collective mode calculation and analyzed its eigenvectors, if the lattice structure is stable, all the eigenvalues of the dynamical matrix should be positive.

Abstract:Motivated by experimental progress in strongly coupled atom-photon systems in optical cavities, we study theoretically the quantum dynamics of atoms coupled to a one-dimensional dynamical optical lattice. The dynamical lattice is chosen to have a period that is incommensurate with that of an underlying static lattice, leading to a dynamical version of the Aubry-André model which can cause localization of single-particle wavefunctions. We show that atomic wavepackets in this dynamical lattice generically spread via anomalous diffusion, which can be tuned between super-diffusive and sub-diffusive regimes. This anomalous diffusion arises from an interplay between quantum localization and quantum fluctuations of the cavity field.

Abstract:Most of the physical properties of substances depend to a greater or lesser on isotopic composition. 95% or more of substances are mixture of different isotopes. We analyze and overview the main characteristics of the new isotope - based materials. Mainly the results of isotope - substituted substances based on lithium hydride and carbon are used. LiH has the largest isotopic shift. Carbon, being the second element after silicon on Earth, has unusually wide range of allotropic compounds with completely different physical properties that a highly dependent on isotopic composition. The use of our object allows the investigation of not only the isotope effects in lattice dynamics (vibrational, elastic and thermal properties), but also the influence of such effects on the electronic excitations (for example, the renormalization of the band - to - band transition energy Eg). We emphasize that the study of the isotope effect remains at the forefront not only in materials science, but also nuclear and high energy physics. The latter one is associated with the non - accelerating manifestation of strong nuclear interaction as well as the origin of mass in Nature.

Abstract:The lattice dynamics of coesite has been studied by a combination of diffuse x-ray scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering and an ab initio lattice dynamics calculation. The combined technique gives access to the full lattice dynamics in harmonic description and thus eventually provides detailed information on the elastic properties, the stability and metastability of crystalline systems. The experimentally validated calculation was used for the investigation of eigenvectors, mode character and their influence on the density of vibrational states. High symmetry sections of the reciprocal space distribution of diffuse scattering and inelastic x-ray scattering spectra as well as the density of vibrational states and the dispersion relation are reported and compared to the calculation. A critical point at the zone boundary is found to contribute strongly to the main peak of the low energy part in the density of vibrational states. Comparison with the most abundant SiO2 polymorph - alpha-quartz - reveals similarities and distinct differences in the low-energy vibrational properties.

Lattice Dynamics in the NASICON NaZr2(PO4)3 Solid Electrolyte from Temperature-Dependent Neutron Diffraction, NMR, and Ab Initio Computational Studies

Abstract:Natrium super ionic conductor (NASICON) compounds form a rich and highly chemically tunable family of crystalline materials that are of widespread interest because they include exemplars with high ionic conductivity, low thermal expansion, and redox tunability. This makes them suitable candidates for applications ranging from solid-state batteries to nuclear waste storage materials. The key to an understanding of these properties, including the origins of effective cation transport and low, anisotropic (and sometimes negative) thermal expansion, lies in the lattice dynamics associated with specific details of the crystal structure. Here we closely examine the prototypical NASICON compound, NaZr2(PO4)3, and obtain detailed insights into such behavior via variable-temperature neutron diffraction and 23Na and 31P solid-state NMR studies, coupled with comprehensive density functional theory-based calculations of NMR parameters. Temperature-dependent NMR studies yield some surprising trends in the chemical shifts and the quadrupolar coupling constants that are not captured by computation unless the underlying vibrational modes of the crystal are explicitly taken into account. Furthermore, the trajectories of the sodium, zirconium, and oxygen atoms in our dynamical simulations show good qualitative agreement with the anisotropic thermal parameters obtained at higher temperatures by neutron diffraction. The work presented here widens the utility of NMR crystallography to include thermal effects as a unique probe of interesting lattice dynamics in functional materials.
Dynamics of Nonlinear Lattices

Abstract:In this topical review we explore the dynamics of nonlinear lattices with a particular focus to Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou type models that arise in the study of elastic media and, more specifically, granular crystals. We first revisit the workhorse of such lattices, namely traveling waves, both from a continuum, but also from a genuinely discrete perspective, both without and with a linear force component (induced by the so-called precompression). We then extend considerations to time-periodic states, examining dark breather structures in homogeneous crystals, as well as bright breathers in diatomic lattices. The last pattern that we consider extensively is the dispersive shock wave arising in the context of suitable Riemann (step) initial data. We show how the use of continuum (KdV) and discrete (Toda) integrable approximations can be used to get a first quantitative handle of the relevant waveforms. In all cases, theoretical analysis is accompanied by numerical computations and, where possible, by a recap and illustration of prototypical experimental results. We close the chapter by offering a number of ongoing and potential future directions and associated open problems in the field.

Anisotropic glass-like properties in tetragonal disordered crystals

Abstract:The low temperature acoustic and thermal properties of amorphous, glassy materials are remarkably similar. All these properties are described theoretically with reasonable quantitative accuracy by assuming that the amorphous solid contains dynamical defects that can be described at low temperatures as an ensemble of two-level systems (TLS), but the deep nature of these TLSs is not clarified yet. Moreover, glassy properties were found also in disordered crystals, quasicrystals, and even perfect crystals with a large number of atoms in the unit cell. In crystals, the glassy properties are not universal, like in amorphous materials, and also exhibit anisotropy. Recently it was proposed a model for the interaction of two-level systems with arbitrary strain fields (Phys. Rev. B 75, 64202, 2007), which was used to calculate the thermal properties of nanoscopic membranes at low temperatures. The model is also suitable for the description of anisotropic crystals. We describe here the results of the calculation of anisotropic glass-like properties in crystals of various lattice symmetries, emphasizing the tetragonal symmetry.

Mode-coupling theory of lattice dynamics for classical and quantum crystals

Abstract:The dynamical properties of nuclei, carried by the concept of phonon quasiparticles (QP), are central to the field of condensed matter. While the harmonic approximation can reproduce a number of properties observed in real crystals, the inclusion of anharmonicity in lattice dynamics is essential to accurately predict properties such as heat transport or thermal expansion. For highly anharmonic systems, non perturbative approaches are needed, which result in renormalized theories of lattice dynamics. In this article, we apply the Mori-Zwanzig projector formalism to derive an exact generalized Langevin equation describing the quantum dynamics of nuclei in a crystal. By projecting this equation on quasiparticles in reciprocal space, and with results from linear response theory, we obtain a formulation of vibrational spectra that fully accounts for the anharmonicity. Using a mode-coupling approach, we construct a systematic perturbative expansion in which each new order is built to minimize the following ones. With a truncation to the lowest order, we show how to obtain a set of self-consistent equations that can describe the lineshapes of quasiparticles. The only inputs needed for the resulting set of equations are the static Kubo correlation functions, which can be computed using (fully quantum) path-integral molecular dynamics or approximated with (classical or ab initio) molecular dynamics. We illustrate the theory with an application on fcc 4He, an archetypal quantum crystal with very strong anharmonicity.

Dislocation Dynamics in a Crystal Lattice (Peierls-Nabarro) Relief

Abstract:The theory of the dislocation motion in the periodic potential relief of the crystal lattice (the Peierls-Nabarro barriers) is reviewed. On the basis of the kink mechanism the temperature dependence of the flow stress is described for a wide class of materials. The theory of quantum mechanical dislocation tunnelling through the Peierls-Nabarro barriers is extended and compared with experimental data on the plasticity of alkali halides, BCC and HCP metals at low temperatures. The behavior of the flow stress at the range of athermic anomalies is modeled by changing the mechanism of the dislocation motion from the thermally activated hopping over the barriers to the quantum tunnelling through them. Some results of previous calculations are represented in a more explicit convenient for applications form. The pronounced effect of the switching between the normal and the superconducting states on the flow stress of metals is explained on the basis of the change in the dissipative properties of the electron subsystem affecting the dislocation motion.

Anomalous lattice dynamics in a sigma-Fe60V40 alloy: Mossbauer spectroscopic study

Abstract:Lattice dynamics in a sigma-Fe60V40 compound, which shows a re-entrant magnetism and orders ferromagnetic ally at ca. 170K, was investigated with the Mossbauer spectroscopy in the temperature interval of 5-300 K. Two relevant spectral parameters viz. the average center shift, <CS>, and the relative recoil-free fraction, f/fo, were explored. The former yielded the Debye temperature, T_D1, and the mean-square velocity of vibration, <v^2>, while the latter T_D2 and the mean-square amplitude of vibrations, <x^2>. Significant differences in the lattice-dynamical behaviors in the magnetic and paramagnetic phases were revealed. In particular, the values of T_D were notably lower and those of f/fo greatly higher in the former. This anomalous result has likely its origin in a remarkably high inharmonic contribution to the vibrations found for the ground magnetic state (spin-glass). Especially anomalous behavior vs. temperature exhibits <x^2> where four well defined ranges could have been identified and ascribed to the paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and two spin-glass phases. Linear correlations between <v^2>-<x^2> were found within each of the four ranges. They enabled determination of force constants, hence a change of the potential energy, Ep, in each of the ranges. The total change of Ep=30 meV while the corresponding one of the kinetic energy, determined from the knowledge of <v^2>, was Ek=21 meV. The lack of balance between Ep and Ek follows from the anharmonic lattice-dynamical behavior observed in the spin-glass state. The results give a strong evidence that magnetism can significantly affect the lattice dynamics.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics B, Ahead of Print. An analytical and numerical formalism is developed to study the influence of the various positions of substitution atoms B on the scattering and transmission vibration modes in quasi-1D monatomic structures A. The matching technique is employed to calculate the dynamical properties and transmittance spectra of two substituted atomic sites. The theoretical formalism gives a complete description of the lattice dynamics and the vibration-waves propagation in the presence of the impurity sites. Numerical calculations are performed for three different positions of the two substituted atoms B in the low-dimensional structure consisting of double monatomic parallel chains. First, we examine the position where the two B atoms are adjacent in the y-direction, afterwards, we place the two sites side by side in the x-direction. Lastly, the two sites are placed in oblique configuration. The obtained results show that phonons associated to the inhomogeneous structures are strongly dependent on the scattering frequency, elastic force parameters and the position of the atomic substituted sites. In the three considered positions, the presence of the B atoms gives rise to localized vibration effects. The fluctuations observed in the vibration spectra are related to resonances due to the coherent coupling between travelling phonons and the localized vibration modes in the neighborhood of the impurity sites.

Abstract:Abstract Complex plasma fluctuation processes have been extensively studied in many aspects, especially lattice waves in strongly coupled plasma crystals, which is of great significance for understanding fundamental physical phenomena. A challenge of experimental investigations in two-dimensional strongly coupled complex plasma crystals is to keep the main body and foreign particles of different masses on the same horizontal plane. To solve the problem, we proposed a potential well formed by two negatively biased grids to bind the negatively charged particles in a two-dimensional (2D) plane, thus achieving a 2D plasma crystal in the microgravity environment. Then, the study of such phenomena in complex plasma crystals under microgravity environment becomes possible. In this paper, we focus on the continuum spectrum, including both phonon and optic branches of the impurity mode in a 2D system in microgravity environment. The results show the dispersion relation of the longitudinal and transverse impurity oscillation modes and their properties. Considering the macroscopic visibility of complex mesoscopic particle lattices, theoretical and experimental studies on this kind of complex plasma systems will help us further understand the physical nature of a wide range of condensed matters.

Abstract:Dynamics for localized spin-wave packets (localized magnons) are studied in a two-component ultra-cold atom system trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices. The centre of the Gaussian wave packet produced in a ferromagnetic chain shows Bloch oscillations under an additional transverse gradient magnetic field, which can be applied to measure the many-body superexchange interaction between the nearest-neighbour atoms.
Lattice thermal expansion of complex oxides with intrinsic anharmonicity

Abstract:The lattice thermal expansion of crystalline solids cannot be adequately modeled by Grüneisen approximation using either Einstein single harmonic frequency or Debye frequency spectrum because a true phonon spectrum does not follow either of the two kinds. The Debye model misfits to many observations due to the fact that real solids comprises of axial anisotropy, lattice waves with dispersion at the Brillouin zone boundaries, low/high frequency optical vibrations in excess of the Debye spectrum. The actual frequency distribution is a complicated function of frequency instead of a simple parabolic Debye spectrum. The frequency distribution can be simplified using power series [1] leading to singularities before and after the Debye cutoff frequency. Using multiple Debye or Einstein oscillators, or their mixtures, is also common practice to better describe the lattice expansion, however, these models extremely suffer from intrinsic anharmonicity in particular at high temperatures. It was demonstrated that even the noble monoatomic solids required inclusion of anharmonic terms in the harmonic model to better explain the observed values [2]. Worse even, when anharmonicity becomes dominant due to formation of vacancies and defects, anomalies of hard/soft modes or change of stereochemical activities of lone electron pairs (LEPs) as function of temperature. Herein we approach an extended Grüneisen approximation that includes harmonic, quasiharmonic and intrinsic anharmonic potentials to describe the internal energy of the crystal as function of temperature. The model has been applied to several complex oxides with LEPs (Bi 2 Ga 4 O 9 [3]) along with axial negative thermal expansion (PbFeBO 4 ) and rigid-unit-modes (KAsW 2 O 9 ) reported here. The metric parameters were obtained from quality data collected from temperature-dependent neutron and X-ray powder diffractions.
Mindlin–Eringen anisotropic micromorphic elasticity and lattice dynamics representation

Abstract:To account for certain essential features of material such as dispersive behaviour and optical branches in dispersion curves, a fundamental departure from classical elasticity to polar theories is required. Among the polar theories, micromorphic elasticity of appropriate grades and anisotropy is capable of capturing these physical phenomena completely. In the mathematical framework of micromorphic elasticity, in addition to the traditional elastic constants, some additional constants are introduced in the pertinent governing equations of motion. A precise evaluation of the numerical values of the aforementioned elastic constants in the realm of the experimentations poses serious difficulties. Thus this paper aims to provide a remedy as how to determine the micromorphic elastic constants theoretically in terms of the atomic force constants and lattice parameters of the crystalline solid with general anisotropy. In this treatment capture of the discrete nature of matter becomes an essential factor. To this end, the discrete lattice dynamics equations of a crystal are related to the pertinent anisotropic micromorphic equations of motion. This approach allows incorporating the symmetry groups of the crystals within lattice dynamics equations conveniently. For the illustration of the current theoretical developments, the micromorphic elastic constants of diamond and silicon crystals are computed in conjunction with ab initio density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Moreover, the longitudinal and transverse optical and acoustic branches pertinent to [100] and [110] directions are presented.
