Abstract:Hard spheres crystallize due to purely entropic forces. The underlying excluded-volume interaction is completely anharmonic and the nature of the phonon spectrum is therefore of interest. To measure the single-particle motion and the phonon spectrum by dynamic light scattering we have used a collection of novel techniques including multispeckle cross correlation on a CCD chip and the growth of large single crystals using a temperature gradient. The random hexagonal close packed crystal has a dispersion relation closer to hcp than to fcc.

Abstract:The models of permanent lattice defect formation in rare-gas solids are discussed with a focus on a point defect formation in solid Ar. The processes of large-scale atomic displacements induced by electronic excitations were studied using the selective vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy method. The coexistence of intrinsic excitonic mechanism and extrinsic Rydberg state induced excited-state mechanism of Frenkel defect formation was found.

Abstract:This paper discusses non-radiative processes relevant to the luminescence characteristics of optically active ions doped into insulators or large-gap semiconductors, with particular attention to how these processes are affected as the particle size is reduced from bulk single crystals to as small as a few nanometers. The non-radiative processes discussed in this article are thermal line broadening and thermal line shifting, relaxation via phonons between excited electronic states, and vibronic emission and absorption. One prominent effect of confinement in the systems of interest is a reduction in the phonon density of states. Thus, we focus on how these non-radiative processes are altered due to the change in the phonon density of states as particle size decreases.

Abstract:We suggest a novel approach for probing of local fluctuations of the refractive index $n$ in solids by means of single-molecule (SM) spectroscopy. It is based on the dependence $T_1(n)$ of the effective radiative lifetime $T_1$ of dye centres in solids on $n$ due to the local field effects. Detection of SM zero-phonon lines at ultra-low temperatures gives the values of SM natural spectral linewidth (which is inverse proportional to $T_1$) and makes it possible to reveal the distribution of the local $n$ values in solids. Here we demonstrate this possibility on the example of amorphous polyethylene and polycrystalline naphthalene doped with terrylene.

Abstract:Exposure of a photoreactive single crystal to light with a wavelength offset from its absorption maximum can have two distinct effects. The first is the "direct" effect, wherein the excited state generated in individual chemical species is influenced. The second is the "indirect" effect, which describes the penetration of light into the crystal and hence the spatial propagation and completeness of transformation. We illustrate using the nitro-nitrito isomerization of [Co(NH3)5NO2]Cl(NO3) as an example that the direct and indirect effects can be independently determined. This is achieved by comparing the dynamics of macroscopic crystal deformation (bending curvature and crystal elongation) induced by the photochemical reaction when irradiating a crystal at the absorption maximum and at different band edges (above or below the maximum) of the same band. Quantitative description of the macroscopic strain dynamics in comparison with experiments allowed us to suggest that irradiation at different tails of the same absorption band causes isomerization to proceed via different excited states and an additional photochemical reaction (presumably, reverse nitrito-nitro isomerization) can occur on irradiation at the ligand-field band edges.

Abstract:In this review, we discuss several fundamental processes taking place in semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots (QDs)) when their electron subsystem interacts with electromagnetic (EM) radiation. The physical phenomena of light emission and EM energy transfer from a QD exciton to other electronic systems such as neighbouring nanocrystals and polarisable 3D (semi-infinite dielectric or metal) and 2D (graphene) materials are considered. In particular, emission decay and FRET rates near a plane interface between two dielectrics or a dielectric and a metal are discussed and their dependence upon relevant parameters is demonstrated. The cases of direct (II–VI) and indirect (silicon) band gap semiconductors are compared. We cover the relevant non-radiative mechanisms such as the Auger process, electron capture on dangling bonds and interaction with phonons. Some further effects, such as multiple exciton generation, are also discussed. The emphasis is on explaining the underlying physics and illustrating it with calculated and experimental results in a comprehensive, tutorial manner.
High-resolution Cryogenic Spectroscopy of Single Molecules in Nanoprinted Crystals

Abstract:We perform laser spectroscopy at liquid helium temperatures (T=2 K) to investigate single dibenzoterrylene (DBT) molecules doped in anthracene crystals of nanoscopic height fabricated by electrohydrodynamic dripping. Using high-resolution fluorescence excitation spectroscopy, we show that zero-phonon lines of single molecules in printed nanocrystals are nearly as narrow as the Fourier-limited transitions observed for the same guest-host system in the bulk. Moreover, the spectral instabilities are comparable to or less than one linewidth. By recording super-resolution images of DBT molecules and varying the polarization of the excitation beam, we determine the dimensions of the printed crystals and the orientation of the crystals' axes. Electrohydrodynamic printing of organic nano and microcrystals paves the way for a series of applications, where controlled positioning of quantum emitters with narrow optical transitions is desirable.

High resolution spectroscopy of thulium atoms implanted in solid noble gas crystals

Abstract:Optically active defects in solid-state systems have many applications in quantum information and sensing. However, unlike free atoms, which have fixed optical transition frequencies, the inhomogeneous broadening of the transitions in solid-state environments limit their use as identical scatterers for such applications. Here we show that crystals of argon and neon prepared in a closed-cycle cryostat doped with thulium atoms at cryogenic temperatures are an exception. High resolution absorption and emission spectroscopy show that the 1140 nm magnetic dipole transition is split into multiple components. The origin of this splitting is likely a combination of different classes of trapping sites, crystal field effects within each site, and hyperfine interactions. The individual lines have ensemble widths as small as 0.6 GHz, which temperature dependence and pump-probe spectroscopy indicate is likely a homogeneous effect, suggesting inhomogeneity is well below the GHz scale.

Super- and subradiance in dilute disordered cold atomic samples: observations and interpretations

Abstract:When a photon is sent onto an atomic ensemble, it interacts collectively with the $N$ atoms of the sample and not simply with one of them. This results in measurable modifications in the scattering rate, the emission diagram or the temporal dynamics. Among these collective effects, here, we study in detail the temporal dynamics of the decay of the scattered light after switching off the driving laser. Right after the switch-off, the decay can be faster than for a single atom, whereas at later time, the decay becomes slower. We refer to this behavior as superradiance and subradiance, respectively. We present in this Chapter our investigations of super- and subradiance in disordered cold atomic ensembles, mainly with low-density samples (dilute regime) and a weak excitation (linear-optics regime), but we also studied the first corrections beyond these limiting cases. We emphasize the different possible interpretations of these phenomena, with in particular the presentation of an optical description of these effects, which sheds a new light on cooperative scattering in disordered samples and provides a more intuitive understanding of the physical mechanisms at play.

Accelerated expansion in a stochastic self-similar fractal Universe

Abstract:In a recent paper, a cosmological model based on El Naschie {\it E} infinity cantorian spacetime was presented [Iovane, G.; Chaos, Solitons and Fractals, 20: 657-667, (2004)]. In that work it was claimed that the present accelerated expansion of the Universe can be obtained as the effect of a scaling law on newtonian cosmology with a certain time dependent gravitational constant ($G$). In the present work we show that it may be problematic to explain the present accelerated expansion of the Universe using the approach presented in \cite{iovane}. As a better alternative we apply the same scaling law and a time-dependent gravitational constant, that follows from the observational constraints, to relativistic cosmology, i.e. the Friedmann's model. We are able to show that for a matter-dominated flat Universe, with the scaling law and a varying $G$, an accelerated expansion emerges in such a way that the function luminosity distance vs redshift can be made close to the corresponding function that comes from the usual Friedmann's model supplemented with a cosmological constant of value $\Omega_{\Lambda}\simeq0.7$. Then the measurements of high redshift supernovae, could be interpreted as a consequence of the fractal-self similarity of the $G$ varying relativistic universe.

Investigating meV-scale Equilibrium Atomic Dynamics with X-Rays: focus on disordered materials

Abstract:This paper reviews non-resonant meV-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) as a complementary method to inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Two aspects of IXS that are notable in this context are (1) that IXS allows straightforward measurements of phonons in small (sub-mm, and even $\sim 0.01$ mm) samples with $\sim 1$ meV resolution and excellent Q resolution and (2) that IXS avoids the kinematic constraints of INS. The first allows both new geometries (thin films, diamond anvil cells) and easy access to new materials, while the second allows high quality data on disordered materials, such as scans with sub-meV resolution to arbitrarily high energy transfer become possible , even at momentum transfers as small as 1/nm. The review briefly discusses the spectrometers and compares the practical forms for the dynamic structure factor for crystals, glasses and liquids. This is followed by a longer review of work on liquids and then shorter discussion of work on glasses, crystals, and discussion of specific geometries. This paper complements the longer introduction/review of IXS at <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.01098" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.01098">arXiv:1504.01098</a> .

Abstract:In situ straining experiments in a transmission electron microscope provide a unique way to investigate in real time the influence of various parameters (temperature, electron beam intensity, etc.) on the dislocation behaviour in semiconductors. A systematic study of the influence of electronic excitation on the dislocation behaviour in single phase ZnS crystals is reported. The observed radiation enhanced dislocation motion is attributed to a lowering of the lattice friction, due to non-radiative recombination of carriers at electronic levels associated with dislocations. Analysis of the results makes it possible to determine which elementary mechanism of dislocation glide is affected by this effect. The defect dynamics in a ZnSe/GaAs heterostructure in the course of in situ heating experiments is investigated. Different dislocation mechanisms are analyzed, which emphasize the influence of electronic excitation on the dislocation behaviour. The contribution of these mechanisms to the strain relaxation is discussed.

Abstract:For over a century, x-ray scattering has been the most powerful tool for determining the equilibrium structure of crystalline materials. Deviations from perfect periodicity, for example due to thermal motion of the atoms, reduces the intensity of the Bragg peaks as well as produces structure in the diffuse scattering background. Analysis of the thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) had been used to determine interatomic force constants and phonon dispersion in relatively simple cases before inelastic neutron scattering became the preferred technique to study lattice dynamics. With the advent of intense synchrotron x-ray sources, there was a renewed interest in TDS for measuring phonon dispersion. The relatively short x-ray pulses emanating from these sources also enables the measurement of phonon dynamics in the time domain. Prior experiments on nonequilibrium phonons were either limited by time-resolution and/or to relatively long wavelength excitations. Here we present the first images of nonequilibrium phonons throughout the Brillouin zone in photoexcited III-V semiconductors, indium-phosphide and indium-antimonide, using picosecond time-resolved diffuse scattering. In each case, we find that the lattice remain out of equilibrium for several hundred picoseconds up to nanoseconds after laser excitation. The non-equilibrium population is dominated by transverse acoustic phonons which in InP are directed along high-symmetry directions. The results have wide implications for the detailed study of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling in solids.

Abstract:Ultrafast transient vibrational action spectra of cryogenically cooled Re(CO)3(CH3CN)3+ ions are presented. Nonlinear spectra were collected in the time domain by monitoring the photodissociation of a weakly bound N2 messenger tag as a function of delay times and phases between a set of three infrared pulses. Frequency-resolved spectra in the carbonyl stretch region show relatively strong bleaching signals that oscillate at the difference frequency between the two observed vibrational features as a function of the pump–probe waiting time. This observation is consistent with the presence of nonlinear pathways resulting from underlying cross-peak signals between the coupled symmetric–asymmetric C≡O stretch pair. The successful demonstration of frequency-resolved ultrafast transient vibrational action spectroscopy of dilute molecular ion ensembles provides an exciting, new framework for the study of molecular dynamics in isolated, complex molecular ion systems.

Microscopic crystallographic analysis of dislocations in molecular crystals

Abstract:Organic molecular crystals encompass a vast range of materials from pharmaceuticals to organic optoelectronics and proteins to waxes in biological and industrial settings. Crystal defects from grain boundaries to dislocations are known to play key roles in mechanisms of growth and also in the functional properties of molecular crystals. In contrast to the precise analysis of individual defects in metals, ceramics, and inorganic semiconductors enabled by electron microscopy, significantly greater ambiguity remains in the experimental determination of individual dislocation character and slip systems in molecular materials. In large part, nanoscale dislocation analysis in molecular crystals has been hindered by the severely constrained electron exposures required to avoid irreversibly degrading these crystals. Here, we present a low-dose, single-exposure approach enabling nanometre-resolved analysis of individual extended dislocations in molecular crystals. We demonstrate the approach for a range of crystal types to reveal dislocation character and operative slip systems unambiguously.

Spectroscopically resolved resonant interatomic Coulombic decay in photoexcited large He nanodroplets

Abstract:Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) processes play a crucial role in weakly bound complexes exposed to intense or high-energy radiation. Using large helium nanodroplets, we demonstrate that ICD is efficient even when the droplets are irradiated by weak synchrotron radiation at relatively low photon energies. Below the ionization threshold, resonant excitation of multiple centers efficiently induces resonant ICD as previously observed for intense pulses [A. C. LaForge et al., PRX 11, 021011 (2021)]. More surprisingly, we observe ICD even above the ionization threshold due to recombination of photoelectrons and ions into excited states which subsequently decay by ICD. This demonstrates the importance of secondary processes, in particular electron scattering and recombination, in inducing ICD in extended condensed phase systems. In addition, we show that ICD can serve as a diagnostic tool for monitoring the relaxation dynamics of highly-excited and ionized weakly-bound nanosystems.

Effects of Bulk Resonance Diffraction on Inelastic Scattering of High-Energy Electrons by Crystals

Abstract:The general dynamical theory of bulk resonance diffraction developed in the preceding paper is used to study the effects of bulk resonance diffraction on the cross-section of inelastic collisions of high energy electrons in crystals. It is shown that the bulk resonance diffraction of incident high energy electrons leads to an enhancement in the characteristic X-ray yield as a result of the strong localization of electrons around atom strings. On the other hand, the bulk resonance diffraction of the inelastically scattered emerging electrons, on the other hand, leads to the formation of Kikuchi ring patterns observed both in transmission and electron backscattering patterns.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising materials for classical and quantum light emission. To understand these outstanding properties, a thorough analysis of the band-edge exciton emission is needed, which is not reachable in ensemble and room-temperature studies because of broadening effects. Here, we report on a cryogenic-temperature study of the photoluminescence of single CsPbBr3 nanocrystals in the intermediate quantum confinement regime. We reveal the size-dependence of the spectral features observed: the bright triplet exciton energy splittings, the trion and biexciton binding energies, and the optical phonon replica spectrum. In addition, we show that bright triplet energy splittings are consistent with a pure exchange model and that the variety of polarization properties and spectra recorded can be rationalized simply by considering the orientation of the emitting dipoles and the populations of the emitting states.
