Abstract:It is proposed that the physical universe is an instance of a mathematical structure which possesses a dual structure, and that this dual structure is the collection of all possible knowledge of the physical universe. In turn, the physical universe is then the dual space of the latter.

Abstract:This is an essay in what might be called ``mathematical metaphysics.'' There is a fundamental duality that run through mathematics and the natural sciences. The duality starts as the logical level; it is represented by the Boolean logic of subsets and the logic of partitions since subsets and partitions are category-theoretic dual concepts. In more basic terms, it starts with the duality between the elements (Its) of subsets and the distinctions (Dits, i.e., ordered pairs of elements in different blocks) of a partition. Mathematically, the Its $\&$ Dits duality is fully developed in category theory as the reverse-the-arrows duality. The quantitative versions of subsets and partitions are developed as probability theory and information theory (based on logical entropy). Classical physics was based on a view of reality as definite all the way down. In contrast, quantum physics embodies (objective) indefiniteness. And finally, there are the two fundamental dual mechanisms at work in biology, the selectionist mechanism and the generative mechanism, two mechanisms that embody the fundamental duality.

Abstract:In this essay I begin to lay out a conceptual scheme for: (i) analysing dualities as cases of theoretical equivalence; (ii) assessing when cases of theoretical equivalence are also cases of physical equivalence. The scheme is applied to gauge/gravity dualities. I expound what I argue to be their contribution to questions about: (iii) the nature of spacetime in quantum gravity; (iv) broader philosophical and physical discussions of spacetime. (i)-(ii) proceed by analysing duality through four contrasts. A duality will be a suitable isomorphism between models: and the four relevant contrasts are as follows: (a) Bare theory: a triple of states, quantities, and dynamics endowed with appropriate structures and symmetries; vs. interpreted theory: which is endowed with, in addition, a suitable pair of interpretative maps. (b) Extendable vs. unextendable theories: which can, respectively cannot, be extended as regards their domains of application. (c) External vs. internal intepretations: which are constructed, respectively, by coupling the theory to another interpreted theory vs. from within the theory itself. (d) Theoretical vs. physical equivalence: which contrasts formal equivalence with the equivalence of fully interpreted theories. I apply this scheme to answering questions (iii)-(iv) for gauge/gravity dualities. I argue that the things that are physically relevant are those that stand in a bijective correspondence under duality: the common core of the two models. I therefore conclude that most of the mathematical and physical structures that we are familiar with, in these models, are largely, though crucially never entirely, not part of that common core. Thus, the interpretation of dualities for theories of quantum gravity compels us to rethink the roles that spacetime, and many other tools in theoretical physics, play in theories of spacetime.

Abstract:Abstract We advocate an account of dualities between physical theories: the basic idea is that dual theories are isomorphic representations of a common core. We defend and illustrate this account, which we call a Schema, in relation to symmetries. Overall, the account meshes well with standard treatments of symmetries. But the distinction between the common core and the dual theories prompts a distinction between three kinds of symmetry: which we call ‘stipulated’, ‘accidental’ and ‘proper’.

Abstract:The Multiverse is collection of parallel universes. In this article a formal theory and a topos-theoretic models of the multiverse are given. For this the Lawvere-Kock Synthetic Differential Geometry and topos models for smooth infinitesimal analysis are used. Physical properties of multi-variant and many-dimensional parallel universes are discussed. The source of multiplicity of physical objects is set of physical constants.

Abstract:Theoretical equivalence and duality are two closely related notions: but their interconnection has so far not been well understood. In this paper I explicate the contribution of a recent schema for duality to discussions of theoretical equivalence. I argue that duality suggests a construal of theoretical equivalence in the physical sciences. The construal is in terms of the isomorphism of models, as defined by the Schema. This construal entails interpretative constraints that should be useful for theoretical equivalence more generally. I illustrate the construal in various formulations of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory.

Abstract:We show that the Einstein equations in the vacuum are invariant under an $SO(2)$ duality symmetry which rotates the curvature 2-form into its tangent space Hodge dual. Akin to electric-magnetic duality in gauge theory, the duality operation maps classical solutions into each other. As an example, we demonstrate that the Kerr solution is non-linearly mapped by duality into Kerr-Taub-NUT.

Abstract:The relationship between mathematics and physics has long been an area of interest and speculation. Subscribing to the recent definition by Tegmark, we present a mathematical structure involving the only division rings - the real, $\mathbb{R}$, the complex, $\mathbb{C}$, and the quaternion, $\mathbb{H}$ - known to meet the requirements of a mathematical description of our universe. The known forces and particle structure, in terms of families and color, can be associated with natural relationships within that structure. A "toy" scientific theory - based on the proposed mathematical structure - is presented to illustrate its applicability. It is shown how parity and time reversal invariance are broken. Two relevant predictions come from the formalism. First, there are no gravity waves and second, matter comes in three varieties, one of which is "dark" in the sense that it is oblivious to electromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:We consider the duality between General Relativity and the theory of Einstein algebras, in the extended setting where one permits non-Hausdorff manifolds. We show that the duality breaks down, and then go on to discuss a sense in which general relativity, formulated using non-Hausdorff manifolds, exhibits excess structure when compared to Einstein algebras. We discuss how these results bear on a class of algebraically-motivated deflationist views about spacetime ontology. We conclude with a conjecture concerning non-Hausdorff spacetimes with no bifurcate curves.

Abstract:Duality symmetries are reviewed. A sufficient condition for duality is the existence of a global symmetry. This can be used as a guideline to systematically prove duality between different field theories. Bosonization and T- duality, for abelian and non-abelian global symmetries, are discussed in detail as well as duality for general antisymmetric tensor field theories. In this case, the presence of topological defects break the global symmetry but duality survives manifesting itself in a different way. Open questions and current limitations of this approach to prove all known dualities are discussed.

Abstract:This thesis discusses various aspects of duality in quantum field theory and string theory. In the first part we consider duality in topological quantum field theories, concentrating on the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten theories as (dual) approaches to the study of four-manifolds. Lower-dimensional variants of these theories are also discussed. In the second part of the thesis we discuss duality in 2D sigma models by studying the interplay between renormalization group flows - as generated by the beta functions - and T-duality. The hypothesis put forward in the thesis is that for these to be mutually consistent, they should commute as operators in parameter space. The last part of the thesis bring these subjects into perspective by reviewing some nonperturbative dualities in string theory.

Abstract:We exploit a new theory of duality transformations to construct dual representations of models incompatible with traditional duality transformations. Hence we obtain a solution to the long-standing problem of non-Abelian dualities that hinges on two key observations: (i) from the point of view of dualities, whether the group of symmetries of a model is or is not Abelian is unimportant, and (ii) the new theory of dualities that we exploit includes traditional duality transformations, but also introduces in a natural way more general transformations.

Abstract:Dualities are mathematical mappings that reveal unexpected links between apparently unrelated systems or quantities in virtually every branch of physics. Systems that are mapped onto themselves by a duality transformation are called self-dual and they often exhibit remarkable properties, as exemplified by an Ising magnet at the critical point. In this Letter, we unveil the role of dualities in mechanics by considering a family of so-called twisted Kagome lattices. These are reconfigurable structures that can change shape thanks to a collapse mechanism easily illustrated using LEGO. Surprisingly, pairs of distinct configurations along the mechanism exhibit the same spectrum of vibrational modes. We show that this puzzling property arises from the existence of a duality transformation between pairs of configurations on either side of a mechanical critical point. This critical point corresponds to a self-dual structure whose vibrational spectrum is two-fold degenerate over the entire Brillouin zone. The two-fold degeneracy originates from a general version of Kramers theorem that applies to classical waves in addition to quantum systems with fermionic time-reversal invariance. We show that the vibrational modes of the self-dual mechanical systems exhibit non-Abelian geometric phases that affect the semi-classical propagation of wave packets. Our results apply to linear systems beyond mechanics and illustrate how dualities can be harnessed to design metamaterials with anomalous symmetries and non-commuting responses.
A Duality Web in 2+1 Dimensions and Condensed Matter Physics

Abstract:Building on earlier work in the high energy and condensed matter communities, we present a web of dualities in $2+1$ dimensions that generalize the known particle/vortex duality. Some of the dualities relate theories of fermions to theories of bosons. Others relate different theories of fermions. For example, the long distance behavior of the $2+1$-dimensional analog of QED with a single Dirac fermion (a theory known as $U(1)_{1/2}$) is identified with the $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher fixed point. The gauged version of that fixed point with a Chern-Simons coupling at level one is identified as a free Dirac fermion. The latter theory also has a dual version as a fermion interacting with some gauge fields. Assuming some of these dualities, other dualities can be derived. Our analysis resolves a number of confusing issues in the literature including how time reversal is realized in these theories. It also has many applications in condensed matter physics like the theory of topological insulators (and their gapped boundary states) and the problem of electrons in the lowest Landau level at half filling. (Our techniques also clarify some points in the fractional Hall effect and its description using flux attachment.) In addition to presenting several consistency checks, we also present plausible (but not rigorous) derivations of the dualities and relate them to $3+1$-dimensional $S$-duality.

Abstract:This paper posits that the cosmic digital code as the law of all physical laws contains two mutually exclusive values: attachment space attaching to object and detachment space detaching from object. However, the cosmic physical system could not start with mutually exclusive attachment space and detachment space at the same time in the beginning. The way out of this impasse is that the complete cosmic system consists of both the cosmic physical system and the unphysical cosmic digital code. The unphysical cosmic digital code allows the coexistence of attachment space and detachment space at the same time. The cosmic digital code behaves as gene in organism, and the cosmic physical system behaves as organ. Under different conditions and times, different spaces in the cosmic digital code are activated to generate different spaces in the cosmic physical systems with different physical laws for different universes in the multivese. All universes start from the primitive multiverse, which only has attachment space attaching to 10D string without the four force fields. During the big bang in our universe, detachment space emerged to detach particle from its four force fields. Such detachment, however, cannot be completely and permanently detached, because particle still attaches to its force fields. The result is hybrid space, combining both attachment space and detachment space in coherent state, such as particle and its force fields. Hybrid space is the space for wavefunction whose probability density is proportional to attachment space, and inversely proportional to detachment space. The collapse of wavefunction in decoherent state is the separation of attachment space and detachment space in such way that attachment space attaches to particle, and detachment space separately detaches from all probability density.

An Extendable Galaxy Number Count Model

Abstract:I review galaxy number count models and present ncmod, an extendable and general purpose model for comparing and interpreting the results of field galaxy survey data. I develop techniques and software for converting the results of a survey done in one filter into another filter, for direct comparison with other surveys. Comparison of the data from surveys which differ greatly in wavelength coverage or sensitivity is of necessity model-dependent, but comparison between similar surveys can be done in a relatively model-independent way. I extrapolate existing number counts into the ultraviolet and thermal infrared. The model is used to predict the results of future space missions, including STIS and NICMOS on HST, ISO, SIRTF and NGST.

Abstract:We use the Jordan frame–Einstein frame correspondence to explore dual universes with contrasting cosmological evolutions. We study the mapping between Einstein and Jordan frames where the Einstein frame universe describes the late-time evolution of the physical universe, which is driven by dark energy and non-relativistic matter. The Brans–Dicke theory of gravity is considered to be the dual scalar–tensor theory in the Jordan frame. We show that an Einstein frame universe, with cosmological evolution of the CDM model, always corresponds to a bouncing Jordan frame universe governed by a Brans–Dicke theory. On the other hand, quintessence models of dark energy with non-relativistic matter component are shown to be always dual to a Brans–Dicke Jordan frame with a turn-around, i.e., a bounce or a collapse. The evolution of the equation of state of the quintessence field determines whether the turn-around is a bounce or a collapse. The point of the Jordan frame turn-around for all the cases can be tuned anywhere by choosing an appropriate Brans–Dicke parameter. This essentially leads to alternative descriptions of the late-time evolution of the physical universe, in terms of bouncing or collapsing Brans–Dicke universes in the Jordan frame. Therefore, the effect of dark energy can equivalently be seen as collapse of space in a conformally connected universe. We further study the stability of such conformal maps against linear perturbations. The effective bouncing and collapsing descriptions of the current accelerating universe may have interesting implications for the evolutions of perturbations and quantum fluctuations in the cosmological background.
