Abstract: Subgraph isomorphism is a well-known NP-hard problem which is widely used in many applications, such as social network analysis and knowledge graph query. Its performance is often limited by the inherent hardness. Several insightful works have been done since 2012, mainly optimizing pruning rules and matching orders to accelerate enumerating all isomorphic subgraphs. Nevertheless, their correctness and performance are not well studied. First, different languages are used in implementation with different compilation flags. Second, experiments are not done on the same platform and the same datasets. Third, some ideas of different works are even complementary. Last but not least, there exist errors when applying some algorithms. In this paper, we address these problems by re-implementing seven representative subgraph isomorphism algorithms as well as their improved versions, and conducting comprehensive experiments on various graphs. The results show pros and cons of state-of-the-art solutions and explore new approaches to optimization.

Abstract:We propose a novel variational method for solving the sub-graph isomorphism problem on a gate-based quantum computer. The method relies (1) on a new representation of the adjacency matrices of the underlying graphs, which requires a number of qubits that scales logarithmically with the number of vertices of the graphs; and (2) on a new ansatz that can efficiently probe the permutation space. Simulations are then presented to showcase the approach on graphs up to 16 vertices, whereas, given the logarithmic scaling, the approach could be applied to realistic sub-graph isomorphism problem instances in the medium term.

Abstract:In this monography, it is proposed to consider the concepts of spectra of edge cuts and edge cycles of a graph as a basic mathematical structure for solving the problem of graph isomorphism. An edge cut is defined by an edge and the vertices incident to it. In contrast to the generation of iterated edge graphs, we consider an iterated chain of qualicuts of the original graph, generated by edge cuts and determined by a recurrence relation. An edge cycle is defined by the set of isometric cycles of a graph. The monography examines the issues of constructing the spectrum of edge cuts Ws and the spectrum of edge cycles Tc of a graph G. It is shown that the formation of spectra is based on the incidence matrix of the graph. The independence of the construction of the graph structure from the numbering of vertices and edges is shown. The necessity and sufficiency of the spectra of edge cuts and the spectrum of edge cycles for determining the isomorphism of graph structures is shown. The relation between the internal structures of the graph and Whitney's theorem is considered.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that a large family of pairs of graphs satisfy a polynomial dependence in asymmetric graph removal lemmas. In particular, we give an unexpected answer to a question of Gishboliner, Shapira and Wigderson by showing that for every , there are ‐abundant graphs of chromatic number . Using similar methods, we also extend work of Ruzsa by proving that a set which avoids solutions with distinct integers to an equation of genus at least two has size . The best previous bound was and the exponent of is best possible in such a result. Finally, we investigate the relationship between polynomial dependencies in asymmetric removal lemmas and the problem of avoiding integer solutions to equations. The results suggest a potentially deep correspondence. Many open questions remain.

Abstract:We show that the Graph Isomorphism (GI) problem and the more general problems of String Isomorphism (SI) andCoset Intersection (CI) can be solved in quasipolynomial(exp((logn)O(1))) time. The best previous bound for GI was exp(O( √n log n)), where n is the number of vertices (Luks, 1983); for the other two problems, the bound was similar, exp(O~(√ n)), where n is the size of the permutation domain (Babai, 1983). Following the approach of Luks’s seminal 1980/82 paper, the problem we actually address is SI. This problem takes two strings of length n and a permutation group G of degree n (the “ambient group”) as input (G is given by a list of generators) and asks whether or not one of the strings can be transformed into the other by some element of G. Luks’s divide-and-conquer algorithm for SI proceeds by recursion on the ambient group. We build on Luks’s framework and attack the obstructions to efficient Luks recurrence via an interplay between local and global symmetry. We construct group theoretic “local certificates” to certify the presence or absence of local symmetry, aggregate the negative certificates to canonical k-ary relations where k = O(log n), and employ combinatorial canonical partitioning techniques to split the k-ary relational structure for efficient divide-and- conquer. We show that in a well–defined sense, Johnson graphs are the only obstructions to effective canonical partitioning. The central element of the algorithm is the “local certificates” routine which is based on a new group theoretic result, the “Unaffected stabilizers lemma,” that allows us to construct global automorphisms out of local information.
Understanding the Complexity of Induced Subgraph Isomorphisms

Abstract:We study left-hand side restrictions of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem: Fixing a class , for given graphs G and arbitrary H we ask for induced subgraphs of H isomorphic to G.For the homomorphism problem this kind of restriction has been studied by Grohe and Dalmau, Kolaitis and Vardi for the decision problem and by Dalmau and Jonsson for its counting variant.We give a dichotomy result for both variants of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem. Under some assumption from parameterized complexity theory, these problems are solvable in polynomial time if and only if contains no arbitrarily large graphs.All classifications are given by means of parameterized complexity. The results are presented for arbitrary structures of bounded arity which implies, for example, analogous results for directed graphs.Furthermore, we show that no such dichotomy is possible in the sense of classical complexity. That is, if there are classes such that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem on is neither in nor -complete. This argument may be of independent interest, because it is applicable to various parameterized problems.
On the Power of Symmetric Linear Programs

Abstract:We consider families of symmetric linear programs (LPs) that decide a property of graphs (or other relational structures) in the sense that, for each size of graph, there is an LP defining a polyhedral lift that separates the integer points corresponding to graphs with the property from those corresponding to graphs without the property. We show that this is equivalent, with at most polynomial blow-up in size, to families of symmetric Boolean circuits with threshold gates. In particular, when we consider polynomial-size LPs, the model is equivalent to definability in a non-uniform version of fixed-point logic with counting (FPC). Known upper and lower bounds for FPC apply to the non-uniform version. In particular, this implies that the class of graphs with perfect matchings has polynomial-size symmetric LPs while we obtain an exponential lower bound for symmetric LPs for the class of Hamiltonian graphs. We compare and contrast this with previous results (Yannakakis 1991) showing that any symmetric LPs for the matching and TSP polytopes have exponential size. As an application, we establish that for random, uniformly distributed graphs, polynomial-size symmetric LPs are as powerful as general Boolean circuits. We illustrate the effect of this on the well-studied planted-clique problem.

Abstract:The graph isomorphism problem is considered. We assign modified $n$-variable characteristic polynomials for graphs and reduce the graph isomorphism problem to the problem of the polynomials isomorphism. It is required to find out, is there such a numbering of the second graph's vertices that the polynomials of the graphs are equal. We present algorithms for the graph isomorphism problem that use the reduction. We prove the propositions that justify the possibility of numerical realization of the algorithms for the general case of the graph isomorphism problem. The algorithms perform equality checking of graphs polynomials. We show that probability of obtaining a wrong solution of the graph isomorphism problem by comparing values of graph polynomials is negligible if the mantissa length is sufficiently large. Since, for a graph on $n$ vertices, the graph polynomial has $2^n$ coefficients, its value at some point cannot be evaluated directly for large enough $n$. We show that we can check the equality of the polynomials at some points without direct evaluation of the polynomials values at these points. We prove that it is required $O(n^4)$ elementary machine operations and machine numbers with mantissas length $O(n^2)$ to check equality of the values for the graphs on $n$ vertices. For the worst, it needs an exponential from $n$ time to solve the graph isomorphism problem instance using the presented approach, but in practice, it is efficient even for well known computationally hard instances of the graph isomorphism problem.

Abstract:In the recent years, several polynomial algorithms of a dynamical nature have been proposed to address the graph isomorphism problem. In this paper we propose a generalization of an approach exposed in cond-mat/0209112 and find that this dynamical algorithm is covered by a combinatorial approach. It is possible to infer that polynomial dynamical algorithms addressing graph isomorphism are covered by suitable polynomial combinatorial approaches and thus are tackled by the same weaknesses as the last ones.

Abstract:The presented material is devoted to the equivalent conversion from the vertex graphs to the edge graphs. We suggest that the proved theorems solve the problem of the isomorphism of graphs, the problem of the graph's enumeration with the help of the effective algorithms without their preliminary plotting, etc. The examining of the transformation of the vertex graphs into the edge graph and the opposite operation illustrates the reasons of the appearance of the NP-completeness from the point of view of the graph theory. We suggest that it also illustrates the synchronous possibility and impossibility of the struggle with the NP-completeness.

Abstract:The isomorphism of polynomials (IP), one of the hard problems in multivariate public key cryptography induces an equivalence relation on a set of systems of polynomials. Then the enumeration problem of IP consists of counting the numbers of different classes and counting the cardinality of each class that is highly related to the scale of key space for a multivariate public key cryptosystem. In this paper we show the enumeration of the equivalence classes containing $\sum\nolimits_{i = 0}^{n - 1} {a_i X^{2q^i } } $ when char$(\mathbb{F}_q )$ = 2, which implies that these polynomials are all weak IP instances. Moreover, we study the cardinality of an equivalence class containing the binomial $aX^{2q^i } + bX^{2q^j } (i \ne j)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n } $ without the restriction that char($(\mathbb{F}_q )$) = 2, which gives us a deeper understanding of finite geometry as a tool to investigate the enumeration problem of IP.

Abstract:Using the Wold-von Neumann decomposition for the isometric covariant representations due to Muhly and Solel, we prove an explicit representation of the commutant of a doubly commuting pure isometric representation of the product system over $\mathbb{N}_0^{k}.$ As an application, we study a complete characterization of invariant subspaces for a doubly commuting pure isometric representation of the product system. This provides us a complete set of isomorphic invariants. Finally, we classify a large class of commuting isometric representations of the product system.

Abstract:Building on work of Cai, Furer, and Immerman [18], we show two hardness results for the Graph Isomorphism problem. First, we show that there are pairs of nonisomorphic n-vertex graphs G and H such that any sum-of-squares (SOS) proof of nonisomorphism requires degree Ω(n). In other words, we show an O(n)-round integrality gap for the Lasserre SDP relaxation. In fact, we show this for pairs G and H which are not even (1--10-14)-isomorphic. (Here we say that two n-vertex, m-edge graphs G and H are α-isomorphic if there is a bijection between their vertices which preserves at least αm edges.) Our second result is that under the R3XOR Hypothesis [23] (and also any of a class of hypotheses which generalize the R3XOR Hypothesis), the robust Graph Isomorphism is hard. I.e. for every e > 0, there is no efficient algorithm which can distinguish graph pairs which are (1 -- e)-isomorphic from pairs which are not even (1 -- e0)-isomorphic for some universal constant e0. Along the way we prove a robust asymmetry result for random graphs and hypergraphs which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:The monography examines the problem of constructing a group of automorphisms of a graph. A graph automorphism is a mapping of a set of vertices onto itself that preserves adjacency. The set of such automorphisms forms a vertex group of a graph or simply a graph group. The basis for constructing a group of graph automorphisms is the concept of orbit. The construction of an orbit is closely related to the quantitative assessment of a vertex or edge of a graph, called weight. To determine the weight of an element, graph invariants built on the spectrum of edge cuts and the spectrum of edge cycles are used. The weight of the graph elements allows identifying generating cycles and forming orbits. Examples are given of constructing a group of automorphisms for some types of graphs.

Abstract:The graph polynomial for the number of independent sets of size $k$ in a general undirected graph is shown to be equal to an elementary symmetric polynomial of the vertex monomials, which are determined by the edges incident at the vertices. The edge variables that comprise the vertex monomials are shown to be nilpotent of degree two. The index of nilpotency of the algebra generated by the graph's vertex monomials is the order of a maximum independent set of the graph. Graph polynomials for the number of cliques and vertex covers are derived from the graph polynomial for independent sets. The graph polynomial for the number of bipartite cuts is given as a coefficient of a multivariate Laurent polynomial.
