Abstract:The presented material is devoted to the equivalent conversion from the vertex graphs to the edge graphs. We suggest that the proved theorems solve the problem of the isomorphism of graphs, the problem of the graph's enumeration with the help of the effective algorithms without their preliminary plotting, etc. The examining of the transformation of the vertex graphs into the edge graph and the opposite operation illustrates the reasons of the appearance of the NP-completeness from the point of view of the graph theory. We suggest that it also illustrates the synchronous possibility and impossibility of the struggle with the NP-completeness.

Existence results for some nonlinear elliptic systems on graphs

Abstract:In this paper, several nonlinear elliptic systems are investigated on graphs. One type of the sobolev embedding theorem and a new version of the strong maximum principle are established. Then, by using the variational method, the existence of different types of solutions to some elliptic systems is confirmed. Such problems extend the existence results on closed Riemann surface to graphs and extend the existence results for one single equation on graphs [A. Grigor'yan, Y. Lin, Y. Yang, J. Differential Equations, 2016] to nonlinear elliptic systems on graphs. Such problems can also be viewed as one type of discrete version of the elliptic systems on Euclidean space and Riemannian manifold.

On Connectedness of Solutions to Integer Linear Systems

Abstract:An integer linear system (ILS) is a linear system with integer constraints. The solution graph of an ILS is defined as an undirected graph defined on the set of feasible solutions to the ILS. A pair of feasible solutions is connected by an edge in the solution graph if the Hamming distance between them is 1. We consider a property of the coefficient matrix of an ILS such that the solution graph is connected for any right-hand side vector. Especially, we focus on the existence of an elimination ordering (EO) of a coefficient matrix, which is known as the sufficient condition for the connectedness of the solution graph for any right-hand side vector. That is, we consider the question whether the existence of an EO of the coefficient matrix is a necessary condition for the connectedness of the solution graph for any right-hand side vector. We first prove that if a coefficient matrix has at least four rows and at least three columns, then the existence of an EO may not be a necessary condition. Next, we prove that if a coefficient matrix has at most three rows or at most two columns, then the existence of an EO is a necessary condition.

Abstract:In the recent years, several polynomial algorithms of a dynamical nature have been proposed to address the graph isomorphism problem. In this paper we propose a generalization of an approach exposed in cond-mat/0209112 and find that this dynamical algorithm is covered by a combinatorial approach. It is possible to infer that polynomial dynamical algorithms addressing graph isomorphism are covered by suitable polynomial combinatorial approaches and thus are tackled by the same weaknesses as the last ones.

Abstract:The graph isomorphism problem is considered. We assign modified $n$-variable characteristic polynomials for graphs and reduce the graph isomorphism problem to the problem of the polynomials isomorphism. It is required to find out, is there such a numbering of the second graph's vertices that the polynomials of the graphs are equal. We present algorithms for the graph isomorphism problem that use the reduction. We prove the propositions that justify the possibility of numerical realization of the algorithms for the general case of the graph isomorphism problem. The algorithms perform equality checking of graphs polynomials. We show that probability of obtaining a wrong solution of the graph isomorphism problem by comparing values of graph polynomials is negligible if the mantissa length is sufficiently large. Since, for a graph on $n$ vertices, the graph polynomial has $2^n$ coefficients, its value at some point cannot be evaluated directly for large enough $n$. We show that we can check the equality of the polynomials at some points without direct evaluation of the polynomials values at these points. We prove that it is required $O(n^4)$ elementary machine operations and machine numbers with mantissas length $O(n^2)$ to check equality of the values for the graphs on $n$ vertices. For the worst, it needs an exponential from $n$ time to solve the graph isomorphism problem instance using the presented approach, but in practice, it is efficient even for well known computationally hard instances of the graph isomorphism problem.

Abstract:We introduce a broad class of equations that are described by a graph, which includes many well-studied systems. For these, we show that the number of solutions (or the dimension of the solution set) can be bounded by studying certain induced subgraphs. As corollaries, we obtain novel bounds in spectral graph theory on the multiplicities of graph eigenvalues, and in nonlinear dynamical system on the dimension of the equilibrium set of a network.

Abstract:We consider the problem of solving a linear system of equations which involves complex variables and their conjugates. We characterize when it reduces to a complex linear system, that is, a system involving only complex variables (and not their conjugates). In that case, we show how to construct the complex linear system. Interestingly, this provides a new insight on the relationship between real and complex linear systems. In particular, any real symmetric linear system of equations can be solved via a complex linear system of equations. Numerical illustrations are provided. The mathematics in this manuscript constitute an exciting interplay between Schur's complement, Cholesky's factorization, and Cauchy's interlace theorem.

Graph invariants from ideas in physics and number theory

Abstract: We study free scalar field theory on a graph, which gives rise to a modified version of discrete Green's function on a graph studied in \cite{CY}. We show that this gives rise to a graph invariant, which is closely related to the 2-dim Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm for graph isomorphism testing. We complement this invariant by another type of graph invariants, coming from viewing graphs as quadratic forms over the integers. We explain that the combination of these two ideas give rise to an interesting approach to the graph isomorphism problem.

Abstract:An isomorphism between two graphs is a bijection between their vertices that preserves the edges. We consider the problem of determining whether two finite undirected weighted graphs are isomorphic, and finding an isomorphism relating them if the answer is positive. In this paper we introduce effective probabilistic linear programming (LP) heuristics to solve the graph isomorphism problem. We motivate our heuristics by showing guarantees under some conditions, and present numerical experiments that show effectiveness of these heuristics in the general case.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime $e$ be a positive integer, $q = p^e$, and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field of $q$ elements. Let $m,n$, $1\le m,n\le q-1$, be integers. The monomial digraph $D= D(q;m,n)$ is defined as follows: the vertex set of $D$ is $\mathbb{F}_q^2$, and $((x_1,x_2),(y_1,y_2))$ is an arc in $D$ if $ x_2 + y_2 = x_1^m y_1^n $. In this note we study the question of isomorphism of monomial digraphs $D(q;m_1,n_1)$ and $D(q;m_2,n_2)$. Several necessary conditions and several sufficient conditions for the isomorphism are found. We conjecture that one simple sufficient condition is also a necessary one.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected, combinatorial graph on $n$ vertices and let $D \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ be its graph distance matrix $D_{ij} = d(v_i, v_j)$. Steinerberger (J. Graph Theory, 2023) empirically observed that the linear system of equations $Dx =\mathbf{1}$, where $\mathbf{1} = (1,1,\dots, 1)^{T}$, very frequently has a solution (even in cases where $D$ is not invertible). The smallest nontrivial example of a graph where the linear system is not solvable are two graphs on 7 vertices. We prove that, in fact, counterexamples exists for all $n\geq 7$. The construction is somewhat delicate and further suggests that such examples are perhaps rare. We also prove that for Erdős-Rényi random graphs the graph distance matrix $D$ is invertible with high probability. We conclude with some structural results on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector for a distance matrix.

Abstract:Conway's 99-graph problem is the second problem amongst the five 1000\$ 2017 open problems set. Four out of the five remain unsolved to this day, including the 99-graph problem. In this paper we quote Conway's definition of the problem and give an alternative interpretation of it, which we humorously name "not Conway's 99-graph problem". We solve the alternative interpretation completely.

Abstract:In this paper, a function on any pair of graphs is defined whose properties are similar to the properties of dot product in vector space. This function enables us to define graph orthogonality and, also, a new metric on isomorphism classes of $n$-vertex graphs. Using dot product of graphs, a coordinate system for graphs is provided which benefits us in graph isomorphism and related problems.

Abstract:Let G = (V, E) be a locally finite graph, whose measure μ(x) has positive lower bound, and Δ be the usual graph Laplacian. Applying the mountain-pass theorem due to Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz (1973), we establish existence results for some nonlinear equations, namely Δu + hu = f(x, u), x ∈ V. In particular, we prove that if h and f satisfy certain assumptions, then the above-mentioned equation has strictly positive solutions. Also, we consider existence of positive solutions of the perturbed equation Δu + hu = f(x, u) + ϵg. Similar problems have been extensively studied on the Euclidean space as well as on Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new family of graphs, matrix graphs, whose vertex set [Formula: see text] is the set of all [Formula: see text] matrices over a finite field [Formula: see text] for any positive integers [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. And any two matrices share an edge if the rank of their difference is [Formula: see text]. Next, we give some basic properties of such graphs and also consider two coloring problems on them. Let [Formula: see text] (resp., [Formula: see text]) denote the minimum number of colors necessary to color the above matrix graph so that no two vertices that are at a distance at most [Formula: see text] (resp., exactly [Formula: see text]) get the same color. These two problems were proposed in the study of scalability of optical networks. In this paper, we determine the exact value of [Formula: see text] and give some upper and lower bounds on [Formula: see text].

Abstract:Abstract We prove that a large family of pairs of graphs satisfy a polynomial dependence in asymmetric graph removal lemmas. In particular, we give an unexpected answer to a question of Gishboliner, Shapira and Wigderson by showing that for every , there are ‐abundant graphs of chromatic number . Using similar methods, we also extend work of Ruzsa by proving that a set which avoids solutions with distinct integers to an equation of genus at least two has size . The best previous bound was and the exponent of is best possible in such a result. Finally, we investigate the relationship between polynomial dependencies in asymmetric removal lemmas and the problem of avoiding integer solutions to equations. The results suggest a potentially deep correspondence. Many open questions remain.

A Graphical Approach to the Frobenius Number Problem in Three Variables

Abstract:The Frobenius number for a set of relatively prime positive integers, where the smallest integer in the set is at least 2, is the largest integer that cannot be expressed as a nonnegative linear combination of those integers. We analyze the Frobenius number for three variables by analyzing the lattice points associated with the line $ax+by = ab$ and its downward parallel translations, along with each lattice point's corresponding value $ax+by$. As an application of our graphical approach, we recover key theorems such as the results from Sylvester and Selmer by reducing them to a graphical problem of locating a lattice point, followed by an evaluation of the linear form $ax+by$ there. Therefore, an arithmetic problem of finding the Frobenius number is reduced to a visual/graphical problem of locating the lattice point, followed by an evaluation, both of which are simple tasks. We then derive relatively simple formulae for the general Frobenius number of three variables. Compared to known results, our results (Theorem 5.1) are not algorithmic in nature nor intricate, which constitutes a significant improvement.
