Abstract:A conjecture in algorithmic model theory predicts that the model-checking problem for first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable on a hereditary graph class if and only if the class is monadically dependent. Originating in model theory, this notion is defined in terms of logic, and encompasses nowhere dense classes, monadically stable classes, and classes of bounded twin-width. Working towards this conjecture, we provide the first two combinatorial characterizations of monadically dependent graph classes. This yields the following dichotomy.

Abstract:The usage of elementary submodels is a simple but powerful method to prove theorems, or to simplify proofs in infinite combinatorics. First we introduce all the necessary concepts of logic, then we prove classical theorems using elementary submodels. We also present a new proof of Nash-Williams's theorem on cycle-decomposition of graphs, and finally we improve a decomposition theorem of Laviolette concerning bond-faithful decompositions of graphs.

Abstract:We show that the marginal semigroup of a binary graph model is normal if and only if the graph is free of K_4 minors. The technique, based on the interplay of normality and the geometry of the marginal cone, has potential applications to other normality questions in algebraic statistics.

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:A nearly platonic graph is a k-regular simple planar graph in which all but a small number of the faces have the same degree. We show that it is impossible for a finite graph to have exactly one disparate face, and offer some conjectures, including the conjecture that graphs with two disparate faces come in a small set of families.

Abstract:It is proved that for integers b , r such that , there exists a red/blue edge-colored graph such that the red degree of every vertex is r , the blue degree of every vertex is b , yet in the closed neighbourhood of every vertex there are more blue edges than red edges. The upper bound is best possible for any . We further extend this theorem to more than two colours, and to larger neighbourhoods. A useful result required in some of our proofs, of independent interest, is that for integers r , t such that , there exists an r -regular graph in which each open neighbourhood induces precisely t edges. Several explicit constructions are introduced and relationships with constant linked graphs, ( r , b )-regular graphs and vertex transitive graphs are revealed.

Abstract:This paper extends prior work on the connections between logics from finite model theory and propositional/algebraic proof systems. We show that if all non-isomorphic graphs in a given graph class can be distinguished in the logic Choiceless Polynomial Time with counting (CPT), then they can also be distinguished in the bounded-degree extended polynomial calculus (EPC), and the refutations have roughly the same size as the resource consumption of the CPT-sentence. This allows to transfer lower bounds for EPC to CPT and thus constitutes a new potential approach towards better understanding the limits of CPT. A super-polynomial EPC lower bound for a PTIME-instance of the graph isomorphism problem would separate CPT from PTIME and thus solve a major open question in finite model theory. Further, using our result, we provide a model theoretic proof for the separation of bounded-degree polynomial calculus and bounded-degree extended polynomial calculus.

Indiscernibles and Flatness in Monadically Stable and Monadically NIP Classes

Abstract:Monadically stable and monadically NIP classes of structures were initially studied in the context of model theory and defined in logical terms. They have recently attracted attention in the area of structural graph theory, as they generalize notions such as nowhere denseness, bounded cliquewidth, and bounded twinwidth. Our main result is the - to the best of our knowledge first - purely combinatorial characterization of monadically stable classes of graphs, in terms of a property dubbed flip-flatness. A class $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs is flip-flat if for every fixed radius $r$, every sufficiently large set of vertices of a graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$ contains a large subset of vertices with mutual distance larger than $r$, where the distance is measured in some graph $G'$ that can be obtained from $G$ by performing a bounded number of flips that swap edges and non-edges within a subset of vertices. Flip-flatness generalizes the notion of uniform quasi-wideness, which characterizes nowhere dense classes and had a key impact on the combinatorial and algorithmic treatment of nowhere dense classes. To obtain this result, we develop tools that also apply to the more general monadically NIP classes, based on the notion of indiscernible sequences from model theory. We show that in monadically stable and monadically NIP classes indiscernible sequences impose a strong combinatorial structure on their definable neighborhoods. All our proofs are constructive and yield efficient algorithms.

Abstract:We give results concerning two problems on the recently introduced flip colourings of graphs, a new class of local v. global phenomena. We prove that for $(b, r)$-flip sequences with $4 \leq b < r < b + 2 \left\lfloor\frac{b+2}{6}\right\rfloor^2$, small constructions of $(b,r)$-flip graphs on $O(b+r)$ vertices are possible. Furthermore, we prove that there exists $k$-flip sequences $(a_1, \dots, a_k)$ where $k > 4$, such that $a_k$ can be arbitrarily large whilst $a_i$ is constant for $1 \leq i < \frac{k}{4}$.

Flip-width: Cops and Robber on dense graphs

Abstract:We define new graph parameters, called flip-width, that generalize treewidth, degeneracy, and generalized coloring numbers for sparse graphs, and clique-width and twin-width for dense graphs. The flip-width parameters are defined using variants of the Cops and Robber game, in which the robber has speed bounded by a fixed constant $r\in\mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$, and the cops perform flips (or perturbations) of the considered graph. We then propose a new notion of tameness of a graph class, called bounded flip-width, which is a dense counterpart of classes of bounded expansion of Nešetril and Ossona de Mendez, and includes classes of bounded twin-width of Bonnet, Kim, Thomass{é}, and Watrigant. This unifies Sparsity Theory and Twin-width Theory, providing a common language for studying the central notions of the two theories, such as weak coloring numbers and twin-width -- corresponding to winning strategies of one player -- or dense shallow minors, rich divisions, or well-linked sets, corresponding to winning strategies of the other player. We prove that boundedness of flip-width is preserved by first-order interpretations, or transductions, generalizing previous results concerning classes of bounded expansion and bounded twin-width. We provide an algorithm approximating the flip-width of a given graph, which runs in slicewise polynomial time (XP) in the size of the graph. Finally, we propose a more general notion of tameness, called almost bounded flip-width, which is a dense counterpart of nowhere dense classes. We conjecture, and provide evidence, that classes with almost bounded flip-width coincide with monadically dependent (or monadically NIP) classes, introduced by Shelah in model theory. We also provide evidence that classes of almost bounded flip-width characterise the hereditary graph classes for which the model-checking problem is fixed-parameter tractable.

Abstract:We prove that for any two minimal models of an lc algebraically integrable foliated triple on potentially klt varieties, there exist small birational models that are connected by a sequence of flops. In particular, any two minimal models of lc algebraically integrable foliated triples on $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt varieties are connected by a sequence of flops. We also discuss the connection between minimal models for possibly non-algebraically integrable foliations on threefolds, assuming the minimal model program for generalized foliated quadruples.

Small but Unwieldy: A Lower Bound on Adjacency Labels for Small Classes

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 5, Page 1578-1601, October 2024. We show that for any natural number [math], there is a constant [math] and a subgraph-closed class having, for any natural [math], at most [math] graphs on [math] vertices up to isomorphism, but no adjacency labeling scheme with labels of size at most [math]. In other words, for every [math], there is a small—even tiny—monotone class without universal graphs of size [math]. Prior to this result, it was not excluded that every small class has an almost linear universal graph, or equivalently a labeling scheme with labels of size [math]. The existence of such a labeling scheme, a scaled-down version of the recently disproved Implicit Graph Conjecture, was repeatedly raised [Gavoille and Labourel, Proceedings of the 15th Annual European Symposium on Algorithms, Lecture Notes in Comput. Sci. 4698, Springer, 2007, pp. 582–593; Dujmović et al., J. ACM, 68 (2021), pp. 1–33; Bonamy, Gavoille, and Pilipczuk, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 36 (2022), pp. 2082–2099; Bonnet et al., Comb. Theory, 2 (2022)]. Furthermore, our small monotone classes have unbounded twin-width and thus simultaneously disprove the already-refuted Small conjecture, but this time with a self-contained proof, not relying on elaborate group-theoretic constructions. As our main ingredient, we show that with high probability an Erdős–Rényi random graph [math] with [math] has, for every [math], at most [math] subgraphs on [math] vertices, up to isomorphism. As a barrier to our general method of producing even more complex tiny classes, we show that when [math], the latter no longer holds. More concretely, we provide an explicit lower bound on the number of unlabeled [math]-vertex induced subgraphs of [math] when [math]. We thereby obtain a threshold for the property of having exponentially many unlabeled induced subgraphs: if [math] with [math], then with high probability even the number of all unlabeled (not necessarily induced) subgraphs is [math], whereas if [math] for sufficiently large [math], then with high probability the number of unlabeled induced subgraphs is [math]. This result supplements the study of counting unlabeled induced subgraphs that was initiated by Erdős and Rényi with a question on the number of unlabeled induced subgraphs of Ramsey graphs, eventually answered by Shelah.

Abstract:A linear graph code is a family C of graphs on n vertices with the property that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two graphs in C is also the edge set of a graph in C. In this article, we investigate the maximal size of a linear graph code that does not contain a copy of a fixed graph H . In particular, we show that if H has an even number of edges, the size of the code is O(2n2/logn) , making progress on a question of Alon. Furthermore, we show that for almost all graphs H with an even number of edges, there exists εH>0 such that the size of a linear graph code without a copy of H is at most 2n2/nεH .

Abstract:A countable, bounded degree graph is almost finite if it has a tiling with isomorphic copies of finitely many Følner sets, and we call it strongly almost finite, if the tiling can be randomized so that the probability that a vertex is on the boundary of a tile is uniformly small. We give various equivalents for strong almost finiteness. In particular, we prove that Property A together with the Følner property is equivalent to strong almost finiteness. Using these characterizations, we show that graphs of subexponential growth and Schreier graphs of amenable groups are always strongly almost finite, generalizing the celebrated result of Downarowicz, Huczek and Zhang about amenable Cayley graphs, based on graph theoretic rather than group theoretic principles. We give various equivalents to Property A for graphs, and show that if a sequence of graphs of Property A (in a uniform sense) converges to a graph $G$ in the neighborhood distance (a purely combinatorial analogue of the classical Benjamini-Schramm distance), then their Laplacian spectra converge to the Laplacian spectrum of $G$ in the Hausdorff distance. We apply the previous theory to construct a new and rich class of classifiable $C^{\star}$-algebras. Namely, we show that for any minimal strong almost finite graph $G$ there are naturally associated simple, nuclear, stably finite $C^{\star}$-algebras that are classifiable by their Elliott invariants.

Abstract:We show that the model-checking problem for successor-invariant first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable on graphs with excluded topological subgraphs when parameterised by both the size of the input formula and the size of the exluded topological subgraph. Furthermore, we show that model-checking for order-invariant first-order logic is tractable on coloured posets of bounded width, parameterised by both the size of the input formula and the width of the poset. Our result for successor-invariant FO extends previous results for this logic on planar graphs (Engelmann et al., LICS 2012) and graphs with excluded minors (Eickmeyer et al., LICS 2013), further narrowing the gap between what is known for FO and what is known for successor-invariant FO. The proof uses Grohe and Marx's structure theorem for graphs with excluded topological subgraphs. For order-invariant FO we show that Gajarsk\'y et al.'s recent result for FO carries over to order-invariant FO.

Abstract:Let be a digraph. For an integer , a k - arc-connected flip is an arc subset of D such that after reversing the arcs in it the digraph becomes (strongly) k -arc-connected. The first main result of this paper introduces a sufficient condition for the existence of a k -arc-connected flip that is also a submodular flow for a crossing submodular function. More specifically, given some integer , suppose for all , where and denote the number of arcs in A leaving and entering U , respectively. Let be a crossing family over ground set V , and let be a crossing submodular function such that for all . Then D has a k -arc-connected flip J such that for all . The result has several applications to Graph Orientations and Combinatorial Optimization. In particular, it strengthens Nash-Williams' so-called weak orientation theorem , and proves a weaker variant of Woodall's conjecture on digraphs whose underlying undirected graph is -edge-connected. The second main result of this paper is even more general. It introduces a sufficient condition for the existence of capacitated integral solutions to the intersection of two submodular flow systems. This sufficient condition implies the classic result of Edmonds and Giles on the box-total dual integrality of a submodular flow system. It also has the consequence that in a weakly connected digraph, the intersection of two submodular flow systems is totally dual integral.

Abstract:It is well-known that the size of propositional classical proofs can be huge. Proof theoretical studies discovered exponential gaps between normal or cut free proofs and their respective non-normal proofs. The aim of this work is to study how to reduce the weight of propositional deductions. We present the formalism of proof-graphs for purely implicational logic, which are graphs of a specific shape that are intended to capture the logical structure of a deduction. The advantage of this formalism is that formulas can be shared in the reduced proof. In the present paper we give a precise definition of proof-graphs for the minimal implicational logic, together with a normalization procedure for these proof-graphs. In contrast to standard tree-like formalisms, our normalization does not increase the number of nodes, when applied to the corresponding minimal proof-graph representations.
