Abstract:High quality, well (001) oriented LSMO/LAO thin films were fabricated by the sol-gel spin-coating method. The electrical and magnetic properties were investigated. It was found that the resistivity peak temperature (Tp) is almost equal to the ferromagnetic transition temperature (Tc), and the films showed higher Tc than that of the single-crystal samples.

Abstract:La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) films were prepared by the chemical solution deposition method with an external magnetic-field ( H ext =5 kOe) annealing process. Structural and magnetic properties were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction results show that both LSMO films are single-phase. The results of field-emission scanning electronic microscopy show that the mean grain size of the film annealed under H ext =5 kOe are about 2.5 times larger than that of the annealed film under H ext =0 kOe. The enhanced magnetic properties are explained reasonably by the magnetic-field annealing.

Abstract:Multi-ferroelectric and magnetoelectric thin films of La_(0.5)Ca_(0.5)MnxTi_(1-x)O_3(LCMTO) were deposited on Si (100) substrate by magneto controlled sputtering under different preparation conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic forced microscopy (AFM) and electronic diffraction spectroscopy (EDS) were respectively used to measure the morphologies, phase structures and composition. All the orthorhombic perovskite phases formed initially at heat treatment temperature of about 600 and thoroughly above 850 in the LCMTO thin film deposited on Si (100) substrate. The contents of the perovskite phase in the thin film increased with increasing heat treatment temperature up to 850. The lattice constant of the perovskite phase in LCMTO thin film deposited on Si (100) depended on the heat treatment temperature, thin film thickness and oxygen concentration in vacuum chamber during preparation of the LCMTO thin film which due to the existence of stress between the thin film and silicon substrate.

Abstract:Highly (00l)-oriented Li0.3Ni0.7O2 thin films have been fabricated on (001) MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The Pb0.4Sr0.6TiO3 (PST40) thin film deposited subsequently also shows a significant (00l)-oriented texture. Both the PST40 and Li0.3Ni0.7O2 have good epitaxial behavior. The epitaxial growth of the PST40 thin film is more perfect with the Li0.3Ni0.7O2 buffer layer due to the less distortion in the film. The dielectric tunability of the PST40 thin film with Li0.3Ni0.7O2 buffer layer therefore reaches 70%, which is 75% higher than that without Li0.3Ni0.7O2 buffer layer, and the dielectric loss of the PST40 thin film is 0.06.

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Tetragonal and Orthorhombic Pr0.5sr0.5mno3 Thin Films

Abstract:Pr0.5Sr0.5MO3 (PSMO) films with tetragonal and orthorhombic structures were epitaxially grown on a [0 0 1]-oriented LaAlO3 substrate (LAO) and a BaTiO3 substrate (BTO), respectively. It was found that the M(T) curves of the tetragonal PSMO films exhibit one/two distinguished magnetic transition peaks depending on the thickness of the film, which is related to the competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions in the films. The tetragonal film shows an insulator-to-metal transition (MIT) as well as a metal-to-semiconductor transition with increasing temperature from 10 to 300 K, and the AFM insulating state of the film can be transformed into the metallic state under a magnetic field of 5 T due to the collapse of the AFM insulator state. For the orthorhombic film on BTO substrate, only a FM metallic state is observed without MIT from 10 to 300 K. In addition, a significant colossal magnetoresistance effect is observed with a wide temperature range from T-C (182 K) to 10 K for the tetragonal films, while only around T-C (240 K) for the orthorhombic films.
Thickness-dependent self-polarization-induced intrinsic magnetoelectric effects in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 heterostructures

Abstract:The self-polarization of PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 thin film is switched by changing film thickness through the competition between the strain relaxation-induced flexoelectric fields and the interfacial effects. Without an applied electric field, this reversal of self-polarization is exploited to control the magnetic properties of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 by the competition/cooperation between the charge-mediated and the strain-mediated effects. Scanning transmission electron microscopy, polarized near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and half-integer diffraction measurements are employed to decode this intrinsic magnetoelectric effects in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 heterostructures. With PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 films < 48 nm, the self-polarization-driven carrier density modulation around La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 interface and the strain-mediated Mn 3d orbital occupancy work together to enhance magnetism of 14 unit cells La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film; with PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 layers > 48 nm, the strain-induced the change of bond length/angle of MnO6 accompanied with a modified spin configuration are responsible for the decrease in Curie temperature and magnetization of 14 unit cells La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film.

Large Low-Field Magnetoresistance (LFMR) Effect in Free-Standing La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Films

Abstract:The realization of a large low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) effect in free-standing magnetic oxide films is a crucial goal toward promoting the development of flexible, low power consumption, and nonvolatile memory devices for information storage. La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) is an ideal material for spintronic devices due to its excellent magnetic and electronic properties. However, it is difficult to achieve both a large LFMR effect and high flexibility in LSMO films due to the lack of research on LFMR-related mechanisms and the strict LSMO growth conditions, which require rigid substrates. Here, we induced a large LFMR effect in an LSMO/mica heterostructure by utilizing a disorder-related spin-polarized tunneling effect and developed a simple transfer method to obtain free-standing LSMO films for the first time. Electrical and magnetic characterizations of these free-standing LSMO films revealed that all of the principal properties of LSMO were sustained under compressive and tensile conditions. Notably, the magnetoresistance of the processed LSMO film reached up to 16% under an ultrasmall magnetic field (0.1 T), which is 80 times that of a traditional LSMO film. As a demonstration, a stable nonvolatile multivalue storage function in flexible LSMO films was successfully achieved. Large Magnetoelectric Response in Sr2IrO4/SrTiO3 superlattices with non-equivalent interfaces

Abstract: Large magnetoelectric response in thin films is highly desired for high-throughput and high-density microelectronic applications. However, the d0 rule in single-phase compounds usually results in a weak interaction between ferroelectric and magnetic orders; the magnetoelectric coupling via elastic resonance in composites restricts their thin-film integration in broadband. Here, we effectuate a concurrence of ferroelectric-like and antiferromagnetic phase transitions in Sr2IrO4/SrTiO3 superlattices by artificial design periodically non-equivalent interfaces, where a maximum magnetoelectric coefficient of ~980 mV cm-1 Oe-1 can be measured. Evidenced by synchrotron X-ray absorption and electron energy loss spectroscopies, a lopsided electron occupation occurs at the interfacial Ti ions. From perturbative calculations and numerical results, a strong coupling of antiferromagnetism and asymmetric electron occupation mediated by spin-orbit interaction leads to a large bulk magnetoelectric response. This atomic tailoring of the quantum order parameters in 3d and 5d oxides provides an alternative pathway towards strong magnetoelectric effects with thin-film integrations.

Abstract:The magnetic behaviors and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of Pr0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (PSMO-7) film grown on a (001) SrTiO3 single-crystal substrate by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) were studied in this paper. X-ray diffraction with a high resolution (HRXRD) measurement shows that PSMO-7 film is grown with a (001) single orientation. The magnetic properties and the MCE related to the ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition of the PSMO-7 film are investigated using the temperature dependence of magnetization M(T) and the magnetic field dependence of magnetization M(H). The M(T) data suggest that with decreasing temperatures, the PSMO-7 film goes through the transition from the paramagnetic (PM) state to the FM state at around the Curie temperature (TC). The TC (about 193 K) can be obtained by the linear fit of the Curie law. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurements show that the PSMO-7 film exhibits the FM feature at temperatures of 10, 100, and 150 K (low magnetic hysteresis can be found), while the film reveals the PM feature with the temperature increased up to 200 and/or 300 K. The research results of M(H) data are consistent with the M(T) data. Furthermore, the magnetic entropy change () of the PSMO-7 film was studied. It was found that the maximum value of () near TC reaches about 4.7 J/kg·K under the applied field change of 20 kOe, which is comparable to that of metal Gd ( of 2.8 J/kg K under 10 kOe), indicating the potential applications of PSMO-7 film in the field of magnetic refrigeration.

Abstract:A revisited study of perovskite-based manganite La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) deposited onto corning-glass (CG) substrates is reported here. The LSMO films were fabricated with RF sputtering with different deposition times, varying from 60 to 180 min, resulting in films with thicknesses of 35.0–109.7 nm. Rietveld refinements of the XRD spectrum showed that the samples exhibited hexagonal structures with a space group of R-3c (167) and remained unmodified structures. Clusters of monolayer growth were observed from the morphologies of the films. Interestingly, the average particle size obtained with an AFM perceived an insignificant variation of 31.7–35.6 nm despite the film thickness increment. Optical, electrical and magnetic properties were studied, as particle-size variation usually has a notable contribution to changes in these properties. It was found that the optical band gap (Eg) was in direct variation with the deposition time due to enhanced thickness and surface roughness. The temperature dependence of the resistivity graph was fitted with the percolation model to obtain further enlightenment on the electrical transport in the films. Low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) was observed for all samples. Ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition was observed in the vicinity of all samples' TC values.

Abstract:The alloy with first-order magnetic phase transition has an advantage to exhibit large magnetoelectric effect in strain-mediated multiferroic composites, since the strain can drive its phase transition and consequently lead to a large magnetic change. In the present paper, we investigate the electric field manipulation of magnetic and magnetocaloric properties in LaFe11.4Si1.6H1.5/Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 laminate. By applying an electric field on the ferroelectric substrate, the relative change of magnetization has a peak value of -8% around the Curie temperature, showing a large converse magnetoelectric effect. As for the magnetocaloric performance, the peak temperature of magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M) has a shift of 3 K to low temperature and the maximal value of Delta S-M keeps almost unchanged under an electric field of 8 kV cm(-1). Moreover, the thermal and magnetic hysteresis can be reduced as well with the application of the electric field.

Abstract:The converse magnetoelectric (ME) coupling of a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin film, deposited on piezoelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN–PT) single crystal substrate by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique, was investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) system. Because of the piezoelectric nature of the PMN–PT, the strain status of the LSMO thin film is tunable by the electric field applied on the substrate, as it is well-known that the Manganite thin film has very strong electron–phonon interaction; thus, the magnetic property change as a function of external electric field can be realized. The change of the Kerr signal of LSMO film upon applying direct current (DC) voltage to the PMN–PT single crystal was recorded. In particular, the voltage-induced change of the Kerr signal in the LSMO by applying the alternative current (AC) actuation voltage bias to the PMN–PT single crystal can be in situ recorded without external magnetic fields. Ferroelectric Self-Polarization Controlled Magnetic Stratification and Magnetic Coupling in Ultrathin La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 Films

Abstract:Multiferroic oxide heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric components hold the promise for nonvolatile magnetic control via ferroelectric polarization, advantageous for the low-dissipation spintronics. Modern understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling in these systems involves structural, orbital, and magnetic reconstructions at interfaces. Previous works have long proposed polarization-dependent interfacial magnetic structures; however, direct evidence is still missing, which requires advanced characterization tools with near-atomic-scale spatial resolutions. Here, extensive polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) studies have determined the magnetic depth profiles of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (PZT/LSMO) bilayers with opposite self-polarizations. When the LSMO is 2–3 nm thick, the bilayers show two magnetic transitions on cooling. However, temperature-dependent magnetization is different below the lower-temperature transition for opposite polarizations. PNR finds that the LSMO splits into two magnetic sublayers, but the inter-sublayer magnetic couplings are of opposite signs for the two polarizations. Near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy further shows contrasts in both the Mn valences and the Mn–O bond anisotropy between the two polarizations. Abstract:We synthesized La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 thin films on LaAlO3 (100) single-crystal substrates by a newly invented precursor film sintering technique. FTIR analysis shows that water evaporation and partial decomposition of PAM are the major reactions during the dry-off step, and oxidation of nitrate ions and the formation of MnOMn bonds only take place in the sintering step. LCMO thin films prepared by the PFS method are all epitaxially-grown thin films with good quality, and have the same crystal structure as the epitaxially-grown LCMO thin films prepared by the PLD method. The critical sintering temperature was carefully studied based on XRD patterns and SEM images. It is found that the MR of thin films is influenced by the critical sintering temperature, the length of sintering and oxygen temper. Besides, the advantages of the PFS method include simple equipments, common chemical compounds and a variety of shapes of the prepared thin films. Therefore, it is promising to fabricate electric devices by LCMO thin films with CMR effects via the PFS method in the future.

Abstract:Highly conductive perovskite La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 thin films were grown on (012) LaAlO3 by pulsed-laser deposition at different substrate temperatures. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements show only a negative effect for the films grown at a temperature of 800 °C. However, a positive MR effect was found for the films grown at lower temperatures of 400 and 500 °C. The sign of the magnetoresistance changed from positive to negative near 150 K under an applied magnetic field of 5.0 T, and the largest positive MR of 2.6% was obtained at a temperature of 4.2 K for the film grown at 500 °C. Low-temperature magnetic hysteresis of the films was also studied, and it is suggested that the scattering of the carrier at the domain boundary may lead to the positive-MR effect.

Abstract:The nanocrystalline films of perovskite-like manganites La1-xSrxMnO3(LSMO, x = 0 similar to 0.6) on the single silicon (100) substrates have been fabricated by sol-gel method. The annealing dependence of the phase formation, grain size and film morphorlogy have been investigated. The measurement on the magnetoresistance of the films with standard four-electrode method shows a widened peak of resistance for each sample due to the boundary effect and a MR value of about -30% at room temperature in 6 T magnetic field for the sample La0.7Sr0.3MnO3.

Abstract:La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO) thin films were deposited on LaAlO3(LAO)(001) by means of channel spark ablation.X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the LSMO thin films are highly c-axis oriented.The lattice mismatch between LSMO and LAO has compressive strain in-plane and stretching the lattice along c-axis,which resulting in appearence of two phases in the sample.The magnetic hysteresis and electric resistance were investigated by a VSM magnetometer and the standard four probe measurement,respectively.At room temperature the film has characteristics of a soft magnet with a coercivity of 13 Oe.The zero-field resistivity ρ(0) is 19.4 mΩ·cm and the magnetoresistance value under 4800 Oe at T = 305 K is 2.25 %.Double exchange mechanism is used to qualitatively account for the magnetoresistance effect.

Abstract:Highly (100) oriented lead strontium titanate (Pb0.4Sr0.6TiO3) thin films were deposited on LaNiO3 ‐coated Si substrate via radio‐frequency magnetron sputtering method with substrate temperature ranging from 300 to 500°C. The PST thin films were crystallized at a temperature as low as 300°C, which may result from the well‐controlled stoichiometry and the in situ crystallization on seed layer. At an electric field of 400 kV/cm, high tunability of 43% and 57% can be achieved for PST films deposited at 300°C and 500°C, respectively. Moreover, the dielectric response shows weak frequency dependence and the loss factor stays relatively low. The results suggest that such films should be promising candidate for the microwave tunable devices compatible with the current Si technology.
Structural Studies of (La0.52Y0.15)(Ca0.17Sr0.16)MnO3/SrTiO3 Fhin Films

Abstract:Manganites are very interesting materials for their abundant physics and possible potential applications in industry. Well crystallized (La0.52Y0.15)(Ca0.17Sr0.16)MnO3/SrTiO3 (LYCSMO) thin films are fabricated on (001) SrTiO3 substrate with TiO2 end-surface by rf-magnetron sputtering. The cations of La,Y,Ca,Sr are disorderly interspersed occupying at A-site in ABO3 unit cell, which benefits for growing LYCSMO films. The averaged surface roughness for the film of 0.37 nm is obtained. A two-dimension growth mode is deduced. A tetragonal distortion, which may results from the distribution between the alternated a-axis unit cell and b-axis unit cell, occurs for the films grown on STO although the target of LYCSMO is confirmed to be orthorhombic with the lattice parameters of 5.4537(7) Å, 7.7063(11) Å, and 5.4601(8) Å for a, b, and c, respectively. Two set of phi scanning reflections with four-fold symmetry corresponding to (163) and (361) reflections are obtained using high resolution X-ray diffraction, which indicates the well four-fold symmetry along b-direction. Temperature dependence of resistance shows that a metal-to-insulator transition occurs at ~270K, which well higher than that of the bulk (T~220K). A relatively larger magnetoresistance is also observed in this material, which we believe that the physical properties may result from the distortion in MnO6 in the unit cell.
