Abstract:We employ a multiscale modeling approach to study the surface structure and composition of a Pd(100) model catalyst in reactive environments. Under gas phase conditions representative of technological CO oxidation (~1 atm, 300-600 K) we find the system on the verge of either stabilizing sub-nanometer thin oxide structures or CO adlayers at the surface. Under steady-state operation this suggests the presence or continuous formation and reduction of oxidic patches at the surface, which could be key to understand the observable catalytic function.

Abstract:We study a new variant of graph coloring by adding a connectivity constraint. A path in a vertex-colored graph is called conflict-free if there is a color that appears exactly once on its vertices. A connected graph $G$ is said to be strongly conflict-free vertex-connection $k$-colorable if $G$ admits a vertex $k$-coloring such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by a conflict-free $shortest$ path. Among others, we show that deciding whether a given graph is strongly conflict-free vertex-connection $3$-colorable is NP-complete even when restricted to $3$-colorable graphs with diameter $3$, radius $2$ and domination number $3$, and, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), cannot be solved in $2^{o(n)}$ time on such restricted input graphs with $n$ vertices. This hardness result is quite strong when compared to the ordinary $3$-COLORING problem: it is known that $3$-COLORING is solvable in polynomial time in graphs with bounded domination number, and assuming ETH, cannot be solved in $2^{o(\sqrt{n})}$ time in $n$-vertex graphs with diameter $3$ and radius $2$. On the positive side, we point out that a strong conflict-free vertex-connection coloring with minimum color number of a given split graph or a co-bipartite graph can be computed in polynomial time.

A note on graphs of $k$-colourings

Abstract:For a graph $G$, the $k$-colouring graph of $G$ has vertices corresponding to proper $k$-colourings of $G$ and edges between colourings that differ at a single vertex. The graph supports the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for $k$-colourings, and has been extensively studied from both extremal and probabilistic perspectives. In this note, we show that for every graph $G$, there exists $k$ such that $G$ is uniquely determined by its $k$-colouring graph, confirming two conjectures of Asgarli, Krehbiel, Levinson and Russell. We further show that no finite family of generalised chromatic polynomials for $G$, which encode induced subgraph counts of its colouring graphs, uniquely determine $G$.

List colorings of $k$-partite $k$-graphs

Abstract:A $k$-uniform hypergraph (or $k$-graph) $H = (V, E)$ is $k$-partite if $V$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that each edge in $E$ contains precisely one vertex from each $V_i$. In this note, we consider list colorings for such hypergraphs. We show that for any $\epsilon > 0$ if each vertex $v \in V(H)$ is assigned a list of size $|L(v)| \geq \left((k-1+\epsilon)\Delta/\log \Delta\right)^{1/(k-1)}$, then $H$ admits a proper $L$-coloring, provided $\Delta$ is sufficiently large. Up to a constant factor, this matches the bound on the chromatic number of simple $k$-graphs shown by Frieze and Mubayi, and that on the list chromatic number of triangle free $k$-graphs shown by Li and Postle. Our results hold in the more general setting of "color-degree" as has been considered for graphs. Furthermore, we establish a number of asymmetric statements matching results of Alon, Cambie, and Kang for bipartite graphs.

Abstract:A local k-coloring of a graph G is a function f:V(G)→{1,2,⋯,k} such that for each S⊆V(G), 2≤|S|≤3, there exist u,v∈S with |f(u)−f(v)| at least the size of the subgraph induced by S. The local chromatic number of G is χℓ(G)=min⁡{k:G has a local k-coloring}. Chartrand et al. [2] asked: does there exist a graph Gk such that χℓ(Gk)=χ(Gk)=k? Furthermore, they conjectured that for every positive integer k, there exists a graph Gk with χℓ(G)=k such that every local k-coloring of Gk uses all of the colors 1,2,⋯,k. In this paper we give a affirmative answer to the problem and confirm the conjecture.

Abstract:A local k-coloring of a graph G is a function f : V (G) -> {1, 2, ..., k} such that for each S subset of V (G), 2 <= vertical bar S vertical bar <= 3, there exist u, v is an element of S with vertical bar f (u) - f(v)vertical bar at least the size of the subgraph induced by S. The local chromatic number of G is chi(l)(G) = min{k : G has a local k-coloring}. In this paper, we show that it is NP-complete to determine whether a graph has a local k-coloring for fixed k = 4 or k = 2t - 1, where t >= 3. In particular, it is NP-complete to determine whether a planar graph has a local 5-coloring even restricted to the maximum degree Delta = 7 or 8. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply an equivalent color transform (ECT) for a minimal k-coloring of any graph G. It contracts each color class of the graph to a single vertex and produces a complete graph K_k for G by removing redundant edges between any two vertices. Based on ECT, a simple proof for four color theorem for planar graph is then proposed.

Abstract:List k-Coloring (Li k-Col) is the decision problem asking if a given graph admits a proper coloring compatible with a given list assignment to its vertices with colors in {1,2,..,k}. The problem is known to be NP-hard even for k=3 within the class of 3-regular planar bipartite graphs and for k=4 within the class of chordal bipartite graphs. In 2015, Huang, Johnson and Paulusma asked for the complexity of Li 3-Col in the class of chordal bipartite graphs. In this paper we give a partial answer to this question by showing that Li k-Col is polynomial in the class of convex bipartite graphs. We show first that biconvex bipartite graphs admit a multichain ordering, extending the classes of graphs where a polynomial algorithm of Enright, Stewart and Tardos (2014) can be applied to the problem. We provide a dynamic programming algorithm to solve the Li k-Col in the calss of convex bipartite graphs. Finally we show how our algorithm can be modified to solve the more general Li H-Col problem on convex bipartite graphs.

Abstract:In 2012, Lévêque, Maffray, and Trotignon conjectured that each graph $G$ that contains no induced subdivision of $K_4$ is $4$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds when $G$ contains a $K_{1,2,3}$.

Abstract:The problem of list coloring of graphs appears in practical problems concerning channel or frequency assignment. In this paper, we study the minimum number of choosability of planar graphs. A graph G is edge-k-choosable if whenever every edge x is assigned with a list of at least k colors, L(x)), there exists an edge coloring $\phi $ such that $\phi (x) \in L(x)$. Similarly, A graph G is toal-k-choosable if when every element (edge or vertex) x is assigned with a list of at least k colors, L(x), there exists an total coloring $\phi $ such that $\phi (x) \in L(x)$. We proved $\chi '_{l}(G)=\Delta $ and $\chi ''_{l}(G)=\Delta +1$ for a planar graph G with maximum degree $\Delta \ge 8$ and without chordal 6-cycles, where the list edge chromatic number $\chi '_{l}(G)$ of G is the smallest integer k such that G is edge-k-choosable and the list total chromatic number $\chi ''_{l}(G)$ of G is the smallest integer k such that G is total-k-choosable.

Abstract:We work with simple graphs in ZF (Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory without the Axiom of Choice (AC)) and assume that the sets of colors can be either well-orderable or non-well-orderable to prove that the following statements are equivalent to Kőnig Lemma: (a) Any infinite locally finite connected graph G such that the minimum degree of G is greater than k, has a chromatic number for any fixed integer k greater than or equal to 2. (b) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a chromatic index. (c) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing number. (d) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing index. Our results strengthen some results of Stawiski from a recent paper on the role of the Axiom of Choice in proper and distinguishing colorings since he assumed that the sets of colors can be well-ordered. We also formulate new conditions for the existence of irreducible proper coloring, minimal edge cover, maximal matching, and minimal dominating set in connected bipartite graphs and locally finite connected graphs, which are either equivalent to AC or Kőnig Lemma. Moreover, we show that if the Axiom of Choice for families of 2 element sets holds, then the Shelah--Soifer graph has a minimal dominating set.

Abstract:We show that any proper coloring of a Kneser graph KGn,k with n−2k+2 colors contains a trivial color class (i.e., a color class consisting of sets that all contain a fixed element), provided n>(2+ε)k2 , where ε→0 as k→∞ . This bound is essentially tight. This is a consequence of a more general result on the minimum number of non-trivial color classes needed to properly color KGn,k .

Abstract:In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $\chi(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.
