Abstract:A fall k-coloring of a graph G is a proper k-coloring of G such that each vertex has at least one neighbor in each of the other color classes. A graph G which has a fall k-coloring is equivalent to having a partition of the vertex set V(G) in k independent dominating sets. In this paper, we first prove that for any fall k-colorable graph G with order n, the number of edges of G is at least (n(k−1)+r(k−r))/2, where r≡n(modk) and 0≤r≤k−1, and the bound is tight. Then, we obtain that if G is k-colorable (k≥2) and the minimum degree of G is at least k−2k−1n, then G is fall k-colorable and this condition of minimum degree is the best possible. Moreover, we give a simple proof for an NP-hard result of determining whether a graph is fall k-colorable, where k≥3. Finally, we show that there exist an infinite family of fall k-colorable planar graphs for k∈{5,6}.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, the $k$-colouring graph of $G$ has vertices corresponding to proper $k$-colourings of $G$ and edges between colourings that differ at a single vertex. The graph supports the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for $k$-colourings, and has been extensively studied from both extremal and probabilistic perspectives. In this note, we show that for every graph $G$, there exists $k$ such that $G$ is uniquely determined by its $k$-colouring graph, confirming two conjectures of Asgarli, Krehbiel, Levinson and Russell. We further show that no finite family of generalised chromatic polynomials for $G$, which encode induced subgraph counts of its colouring graphs, uniquely determine $G$.

Abstract:A local k-coloring of a graph G is a function f:V(G)→{1,2,⋯,k} such that for each S⊆V(G), 2≤|S|≤3, there exist u,v∈S with |f(u)−f(v)| at least the size of the subgraph induced by S. The local chromatic number of G is χℓ(G)=min⁡{k:G has a local k-coloring}. Chartrand et al. [2] asked: does there exist a graph Gk such that χℓ(Gk)=χ(Gk)=k? Furthermore, they conjectured that for every positive integer k, there exists a graph Gk with χℓ(G)=k such that every local k-coloring of Gk uses all of the colors 1,2,⋯,k. In this paper we give a affirmative answer to the problem and confirm the conjecture.

Abstract:Given a proper coloring $f$ of a graph $G$, a b-vertex in $f$ is a vertex that is adjacent to every color class but its own. It is a b-coloring if every color class contains at least one b-vertex, and it is a fall-coloring if every vertex is a b-vertex. The b-chromatic number of $G$ is the maximum integer $b(G)$ for which $G$ has a b-coloring with $b(G)$ colors, while the fall-chromatic number and the fall-acromatic number of $G$ are, respectively, the minimum and maximum integers $f_1(G),f_2(G)$ for which $G$ has a fall-coloring. In this article, we explore the concepts of b-homomorphisms and Type II homomorphisms, which generalize the concepts of b-colorings and fall-colorings, and present some meta-theorems concerning products of graphs. As a result, we derive some previously known facts about these metrics on graph products. We also give a negative answer to a question posed by Kaul and Mitillos about fall-colorings of perfect graphs.

Coloring of Graphs Avoiding Bicolored Paths of a Fixed Length

Abstract:The problem of finding the minimum number of colors to color a graph properly without containing any bicolored copy of a fixed family of subgraphs has been widely studied. Most well-known examples are star coloring and acyclic coloring of graphs (Grünbaum, 1973) where bicolored copies of $P_4$ and cycles are not allowed, respectively. In this paper, we introduce a variation of these problems and study proper coloring of graphs not containing a bicolored path of a fixed length and provide general bounds for all graphs. A $P_k$-coloring of an undirected graph $G$ is a proper vertex coloring of $G$ such that there is no bicolored copy of $P_k$ in $G,$ and the minimum number of colors needed for a $P_k$-coloring of $G$ is called the $P_k$-chromatic number of $G,$ denoted by $s_k(G).$ We provide bounds on $s_k(G)$ for all graphs, in particular, proving that for any graph $G$ with maximum degree $d\geq 2,$ and $k\geq4,$ $s_k(G)=O(d^{\frac{k-1}{k-2}}).$ Moreover, we find the exact values for the $P_k$-chromatic number of the products of some cycles and paths for $k=5,6.$

Abstract:Let $H=(V(H),E(H))$ be a graph. A $k$-coloring of $H$ is a mapping $\pi : V(H) \longrightarrow \{1,2,\ldots, k\}$ so that each color class induces a $K_2$-free subgraph. For a graph $G$ of order at least $2$, a $G$-free $k$-coloring of $H$ is a mapping $\pi : V(H) \longrightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ so that the subgraph of $H$ induced by each color class of $\pi$ is $G$-free, i.e. contains no copy of $G$. The $G$-free chromatic number of $H$ is the minimum number $k$ so that there is a $G$-free $k$-coloring of $H$, denoted by $\chi_G(H)$. A graph $H$ is uniquely $k$-$G$-free colouring if $\chi_G(H)=k$ and every $k$-$G$-free colouring of $H$ produces the same color classes. A graph $H$ is minimal with respect to $G$-free, or $G$-free-minimal, if for every edges of $E(H)$ we have $\chi_G(H\setminus\{e\})= \chi_G(H)-1$. In this paper we give some bounds and attribute about uniquely $k$-$G$-free colouring and $k$-$G$-free-minimal.

Abstract:The reconfiguration graph of the $k$-colorings, denoted $R_k(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent in $R_k(G)$ if they differ in color on exactly one vertex. A graph $G$ is said to be recolorable if $R_{\ell}(G)$ is connected for all $\ell\geq \chi(G)$+1. In this paper, we study the recolorability of several graph classes restricted by forbidden induced subgraphs. We prove some properties of a vertex-minimal graph $G$ which is not recolorable. We show that every (triangle, $H$)-free graph is recolorable if and only if every (paw, $H$)-free graph is recolorable. Every graph in the class of $(2K_2,\ H)$-free graphs, where $H$ is a 4-vertex graph except $P_4$ or $P_3$+$P_1$, is recolorable if $H$ is either a triangle, paw, claw, or diamond. Furthermore, we prove that every ($P_5$, $C_5$, house, co-banner)-free graph is recolorable.

List colorings of $k$-partite $k$-graphs

Abstract:A $k$-uniform hypergraph (or $k$-graph) $H = (V, E)$ is $k$-partite if $V$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that each edge in $E$ contains precisely one vertex from each $V_i$. In this note, we consider list colorings for such hypergraphs. We show that for any $\epsilon > 0$ if each vertex $v \in V(H)$ is assigned a list of size $|L(v)| \geq \left((k-1+\epsilon)\Delta/\log \Delta\right)^{1/(k-1)}$, then $H$ admits a proper $L$-coloring, provided $\Delta$ is sufficiently large. Up to a constant factor, this matches the bound on the chromatic number of simple $k$-graphs shown by Frieze and Mubayi, and that on the list chromatic number of triangle free $k$-graphs shown by Li and Postle. Our results hold in the more general setting of "color-degree" as has been considered for graphs. Furthermore, we establish a number of asymmetric statements matching results of Alon, Cambie, and Kang for bipartite graphs.

Abstract:Consider the following two ways to colour the vertices of a graph where the requirement that adjacent vertices get distinct colours is relaxed. A colouring has "defect" $d$ if each monochromatic component has maximum degree at most $d$. A colouring has "clustering" $c$ if each monochromatic component has at most $c$ vertices. This paper surveys research on these types of colourings, where the first priority is to minimise the number of colours, with small defect or small clustering as a secondary goal. List colouring variants are also considered. The following graph classes are studied: outerplanar graphs, planar graphs, graphs embeddable in surfaces, graphs with given maximum degree, graphs with given maximum average degree, graphs excluding a given subgraph, graphs with linear crossing number, linklessly or knotlessly embeddable graphs, graphs with given Colin de Verdière parameter, graphs with given circumference, graphs excluding a fixed graph as an immersion, graphs with given thickness, graphs with given stack- or queue-number, graphs excluding $K_t$ as a minor, graphs excluding $K_{s,t}$ as a minor, and graphs excluding an arbitrary graph $H$ as a minor. Several open problems are discussed.

Abstract:A local k-coloring of a graph G is a function f : V (G) -> {1, 2, ..., k} such that for each S subset of V (G), 2 <= vertical bar S vertical bar <= 3, there exist u, v is an element of S with vertical bar f (u) - f(v)vertical bar at least the size of the subgraph induced by S. The local chromatic number of G is chi(l)(G) = min{k : G has a local k-coloring}. In this paper, we show that it is NP-complete to determine whether a graph has a local k-coloring for fixed k = 4 or k = 2t - 1, where t >= 3. Coloring graphs with forbidden almost bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $\chi(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.

Abstract:We work with simple graphs in ZF (Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory without the Axiom of Choice (AC)) and assume that the sets of colors can be either well-orderable or non-well-orderable to prove that the following statements are equivalent to Kőnig Lemma: (a) Any infinite locally finite connected graph G such that the minimum degree of G is greater than k, has a chromatic number for any fixed integer k greater than or equal to 2. (b) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a chromatic index. (c) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing number. (d) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing index. Our results strengthen some results of Stawiski from a recent paper on the role of the Axiom of Choice in proper and distinguishing colorings since he assumed that the sets of colors can be well-ordered. We also formulate new conditions for the existence of irreducible proper coloring, minimal edge cover, maximal matching, and minimal dominating set in connected bipartite graphs and locally finite connected graphs, which are either equivalent to AC or Kőnig Lemma. Moreover, we show that if the Axiom of Choice for families of 2 element sets holds, then the Shelah--Soifer graph has a minimal dominating set.

Colorings of complements of line graphs

Abstract:Our purpose is to show that complements of line graphs enjoy nice coloring properties. We show that for all graphs in this class the local and usual chromatic numbers are equal. We also prove a sufficient condition for the chromatic number to be equal to a natural upper bound. A consequence of this latter condition is a complete characterization of all induced subgraphs of the Kneser graph $\operatorname{KG}(n,2)$ that have a chromatic number equal to its chromatic number, namely $n-2$. In addition to the upper bound, a lower bound is provided by Dol'nikov's theorem, a classical result of the topological method in graph theory. We prove the $\operatorname{NP}$-hardness of deciding the equality between the chromatic number and any of these bounds. The topological method is especially suitable for the study of coloring properties of complements of line graphs of hypergraphs. Nevertheless, all proofs in this paper are elementary and we also provide a short discussion on the ability for the topological methods to cover some of our results.

$k$-local Graphs

Abstract:In 2017 Day et al. introduced the notion of locality as a structural complexity-measure for patterns in the field of pattern matching established by Angluin in 1980. In 2019 Casel et al. showed that determining the locality of an arbitrary pattern is NP-complete. Inspired by hierarchical clustering, we extend the notion to coloured graphs, i.e., given a coloured graph determine an enumeration of the colours such that colouring the graph stepwise according to the enumeration leads to as few clusters as possible. Next to first theoretical results on graph classes, we propose a priority search algorithm to compute the $k$-locality of a graph. The algorithm is optimal in the number of marking prefix expansions, and is faster by orders of magnitude than an exhaustive search. Finally, we perform a case study on a DBLP subgraph to demonstrate the potential of $k$-locality for knowledge discovery.
