Abstract:We employ a multiscale modeling approach to study the surface structure and composition of a Pd(100) model catalyst in reactive environments. Under gas phase conditions representative of technological CO oxidation (~1 atm, 300-600 K) we find the system on the verge of either stabilizing sub-nanometer thin oxide structures or CO adlayers at the surface. Under steady-state operation this suggests the presence or continuous formation and reduction of oxidic patches at the surface, which could be key to understand the observable catalytic function.

Abstract:A graph G is k-vertex-critical if G has chromatic number k but every proper induced subgraph of G has chromatic number less than k. The study of k-vertex-critical graphs for graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there is a polynomial-time algorithm to decide if a graph in the class is (k - 1)-colorable. In this paper, we prove that for every fixed integer k > 1, there are only finitely many k-vertex-critical (P5, gem)-free graphs and (P5, P3 + P2)-free graphs. To prove the results we use a known structure theorem for (P5,gem)-free graphs combined with properties of k-vertex-critical graphs. Moreover, we characterize all k-vertex-critical (P5, gem) -free graphs and (P5, P3 + P2)-free graphs for k E {4, 5} using a computer generation algorithm. (c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every (2P_2,K_4)-free graph is 4-colorable. The bound is attained by the five-wheel and the complement of the seven-cycle. This answers an open question by Wagon in the 1980s. Our result can also be viewed as a result in the study of the Vizing bound for graph classes. A major open problem in the study of computational complexity of graph coloring is whether coloring can be solved in polynomial time for (4P_1,C_4)-free graphs. Lozin and Malyshev conjecture that the answer is yes. As an application of our main result, we provide the first positive evidence to the conjecture by giving a 2-approximation algorithm for coloring (4P_1,C_4)-free graphs.

Abstract:Given two graphs H-1 and H-2, a graph G is (H-1, H-2)-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to H-1 or H-2. Let P-t be the path on t vertices. A graph G is k-vertex-critical if G has chromatic number k but every proper induced subgraph of G has chromatic number less than k. The study of k-vertex-critical graphs for graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there is a polynomial-time algorithm to decide if a graph in the class is (k - 1)-colorable. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of the finiteness of k-vertex-critical graphs in subclasses of P-5-free graphs. Our main result is a complete classification of the finiteness of k-vertex-critical graphs in the class of (P-5, H)-free graphs for all graphs H on 4 vertices. To obtain the complete dichotomy, we prove the finiteness for four new graphs H using various techniques - such as Ramsey-type arguments and the dual of Dilworth's Theorem - that may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$, but $G$ has chromatic number $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for specific graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there exists a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of a graph in the class. In this paper, we show that: (1) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,4}+P_1)$-free graphs; (2) for $s \ge 1$, there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,s}+P_1)$-free graphs; (3) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,\overline{K_3+2P_1})$-free graphs. Moreover, we characterize all $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,H)$-free graphs where $H \in \{K_{1,3}+P_1,K_{1,4}+P_1,\overline{K_3+2P_1}\}$ using an exhaustive graph generation algorithm.

Abstract:A ( k , r ) -coloring of a graph G is a proper k-vertex coloring such that any vertex is adjacent to vertices with at least min { r , d G ( v ) } . The minimum integer k such that G has a ( k , r ) -coloring is called the r-hued chromatic number of G and denoted by χ r ( G ) . A graph does not have an induced subgraph isomorphic to P 5 is a P 5 -free graph. It is not known whether it is valid that χ r ( G ) ≤ r χ ( G ) among all P 5 -free graphs. In [Discrete Math. 342(2019)1904-1911], an affirmative answer is presented for all graphs G with χ ( G ) ≤ 2 . We verify that if G is a P 5 -free graph with χ ( G ) ≤ 3 , then χ r ( G ) ≤ r χ ( G ) .

Abstract:In this article we show that Maximum Partial List H-Coloring is polynomial-time solvable on P_5-free graphs for every fixed graph H. In particular, this implies that Maximum k-Colorable Subgraph is polynomial-time solvable on P_5-free graphs. This answers an open question from Agrawal, Lima, Lokshtanov, Saurabh & Sharma [SODA 2024]. This also improves the $n^{\omega(G)}$-time algorithm for Maximum Partial H-Coloring by Chudnovsky, King, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski & Spirkl [SIDMA 2021] to polynomial-time algorithm.

For a graph $G$, the chromatic number of $G$ (denoted by $\chi(G)$) is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ such that no two adjacent vertices receive the same color, and the clique number of $G$ is the size of a largest clique in $G$. Here, we are interested in the class of ($P_5$, kite)-free graphs with small clique number.
