Abstract:Development of plasma methods for chemical transformation of CO2and CH4 into useful compounds is of paramount importance from two standpoints of C1 chemistry and so-called green chemistry.Thermal plasma which has high temperature and high enthalpy was used to study carbon dioxide decomposition,methane decomposition and carbon dioxide reforming of methane.The results show that thermal plasma is an effective means for carbon dioxide and methane transform.The mutual promotion between carbon dioxide and methane in reforming process should be considered in order to obtain high conversion of CH4 and CO2,and high chemical energy efficiency.

Abstract:Efforts to develop efficient methods for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) have drawn mounting interest due to incremental concerns over carbon emissions. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) technology has shown promise in this regard by producing numerous reactive substances at relatively low temperatures. However, an analysis of relevant literature reveals an underwhelming level of overall energy efficiency for this technology and an insufficient level of attention being paid to it. It is crucial to put forward more effective energy-saving schemes based on a comprehensive analysis of past research results to promote sustained development. This review highlights the latest advances in pertinent energy efficiency optimization studies and outlines state-of-the-art methods. In terms of energy efficiency optimization for plasma CO2 conversion, a comparison is made among different research results in four aspects as follows. Specifically, this study analyzes reactor structure optimization in terms of discharge characteristic, flow field, and plasma contact area; discusses pathways of heat transfer optimization to suppress the competing reaction; and explores catalyst optimization in terms of active sites, calcination temperature, and product selectivity; examines the potential of utilizing solar energy for clean energy applications. The analysis of energy efficiency data indicates an overall improvement when the aforementioned optimization measures are applied, which is essential to validate the effectiveness of each method. Finally, this paper discusses the potential difficulties and future research areas of NTP technology. Urgent further research is imperative on energy efficiency optimization methods for potential large-scale industrial applications in the future.

Abstract:With the escalation of global climate change, reducing carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality have gradually become significant concerns. Conversion of CO2 into valuable products is regarded as a viable solution to address these challenges. In comparison to other catalytic approaches, non-thermal plasma (NTP) offers diverse reaction pathways for CO2 conversion under mild process conditions and can ensure selective production of value-added chemicals and fuels when combined with catalytic materials. However, further research is needed to translate plasma-based technologies to the industrial scale. This article focuses on three crucial characteristics of CO2 conversion in NTP: energy efficiency, conversion rate, and selectivity. We overview recent research advances, outline challenges for technological innovations, and propose potential directions for future research.

Abstract:The transformation of CO2 into chemical building blocks for various industries is considered a key technology in a net‐zero energy future. To realize this, plasma discharges are one of the most promising approaches thanks to their electron‐driven reactions and high operational flexibility. Most studies focused on room‐temperature and vibrationally‐excited discharges, however, lately, the importance of thermal reactions is considered. Therefore, we developed a temperature‐dependent plasma‐chemical reaction mechanism to investigate the temperature dependence of plasma‐based CO2 conversion. Here, we present the various effects of thermally‐driven reactions on the CO2 conversion as a function of the gas temperature and specific energy input. Our analysis pinpointed the key reactions controlling the plasma‐based CO2 conversion, shifting from an electron‐driven to a thermal‐driven regime. Additionally, we used the mechanism to verify the theoretical upper boundary of the process' energy efficiency, and discussed how our findings could lead to the further development and optimization of plasma discharges for efficient CO2 conversion in the future.

Investigation of Highly Efficient CO2 Hydrogenation at Ambient Conditions Using Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma

Abstract:The increasing utilization of CO2 for synthesizing high-value fuels or essential chemicals is a potentially effective approach to mitigating global warming and climate change. Compared to thermal catalytic CO2 conversion under harsh operating conditions (400∼500°C, 10 MPa), non-thermal plasma can overcome kinetic barriers and trigger reactions beyond thermal equilibrium at ambient temperature and pressure. In this study, the effects of operating conditions (discharge frequency, input power, and gas flow rate) and geometrical parameters (discharge length, discharge gap, and dielectric materials) have been extensively analyzed using typical cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The discharge characteristics changed by operating conditions (including waveforms of applied voltage and current) are compared, indicating higher applied voltage and lower gas flow rate can strengthen the filamentary discharges. The results demonstrate CO2 conversion rate increases with the increase of applied voltage and the decrease of CO2/H2 ratio, achieving its maximum value of 43.0% at 20 mL/min. The highest energy efficiency of 3771.9 μg/kJ for CO generation is obtained at the applied voltage of 5.5 kV and gas flow rate of 40 mL/min, respectively. Besides, the structure of plasma reactor also impacts the performance of CO2 conversion. On the one hand, the discharge gap has a significant role in the variation of CO2 conversion and product selectivity, which is attributed to the electric field density and corresponding electron-induced reaction. On the other hand, the circulating water-cooling jacket was used to find out the influence of reaction temperature, which switched the product from CO to CH4. This work will pave the way for a sustainable alternative towards future CO2 conversion and utilization.

Abstract:Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and transforming it into valuable fuels offers a dual benefit: the potential to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels and decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. Plasma‐assisted CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) conversion stands out within the various CO2 recycling methods, with research primarily emphasizing its energy efficiency and conversion efficacy. However, investigations of CO2 conversion under real air conditions are relatively scarce, and the effects of the other atmospheric molecules on the CO2 conversion process require further exploration. We have induced plasma chemical reactions by generating ultrashort pulse laser filaments inside a sealed‐off cavity with variable air pressures. Simultaneously, we applied mid‐infrared laser absorption spectroscopy to monitor the time evolution of the reaction products. The peak CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratio was achieved at an air pressure of 8000 Pa, which resulted in a CO concentration of 82 ppm. The experimental results suggested that nitrogen (N2) plays a promoting role in CO2‐to‐CO conversion, while the presence of oxygen (O2) seems to hinder the process. The hydroxyl radical (OH) arising from water molecules (H2O) limits the accumulation of CO at lower air pressures. However, at higher air pressures, the reduced OH radical concentration shows negligible impact on the CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratios. In addition, the study revealed that atmospheric plasmas produce a high concentration of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which is directly proportional to the levels of ambient humidity. This research contributes to the development of strategies to mitigate the production of harmful gases like HCN in CO2 conversion, thereby promoting the ecofriendly conversion of atmospheric CO2.

Abstract:We propose a plasma chemical looping CO2 splitting (PCLCS) approach that enables highly efficient CO2 conversion into O-2-free CO at mild temperatures. PCLCS achieves an impressive 84% CO2 conversion and a 1.3 mmol g(-1) CO yield, with no O-2 detected. Crucially, this strategy significantly lowers the temperature required for conventional chemical looping processes from 650 to 1000 degrees C to only 320 degrees C, demonstrating a robust synergy between plasma and the Ce0.7Zr0.3O2 oxygen carrier (OC). Systematic experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil the pivotal role of plasma in activating and partially decomposing CO2, yielding a mixture of CO, O-2/O, and electronically/vibrationally excited CO2*. Notably, these excited CO2* species then efficiently decompose over the oxygen vacancies of the OCs, with a substantially reduced activation barrier (0.86 eV) compared to ground-state CO2 (1.63 eV), contributing to the synergy. This work offers a promising and energy-efficient pathway for producing O-2-free CO from inert CO2 through the tailored interplay of plasma and OCs.
Boosting the Conversion of CO2 with Biochar to Clean CO in an Atmospheric Plasmatron: A Synergy of Plasma Chemistry and Thermochemistry

Abstract:In this work, the conversion of CO2 into O-2-free CO has been investigated in an atmospheric plasmatron via the reaction with biochar. The effects of the biochar source, pyrolysis temperature for biochar preparation, and gas-solid reaction patterns (fixed bed and fluidized bed) on the reaction performance were evaluated under different feed flow rates. The underlying mechanisms were explored using in situ optical emission spectroscopy focusing on understanding the role of plasma chemistry and thermochemistry in CO2 conversion. The results revealed that the presence of both biochar and plasma significantly facilitate CO2 conversion. In comparison to thermal CO2 splitting, the plasmatron CO2 + C process dramatically enhanced the CO2 conversion from 0 to 27.1%. Walnut shell biochar prepared at relatively high pyrolysis temperatures favored CO2 conversion due to a high carbon content. A fixed bed surprisingly provided remarkably better performance than a fluidized bed for the CO2 + C reaction, benefiting from a prompt consumption of the generated O-2 by biochar. The high electron density achieved in the plasmatron (10(15) cm(-3)) allows for a high processing capacity, and the moderate electron temperature (1.1-1.5 eV) with enhanced vibrational energy (6300-8200 K) obtained stimulates the most efficient CO2 activation routes through vibrational excitation. The relatively high rotational (gas) temperatures in the core plasma area (2100-2400 K) and in the gas-solid reaction region (<1573 K) detrimentally drive the reverse reactions of CO2 splitting and advantageously boost the biochar-involved reactions, respectively, by thermochemistry. The synergy of plasma-chemistry-dominated CO2 dissociation and the thermochemistry-dominated CO2 + C and O-2 + C reactions accounts for the high CO2 conversion obtained in the plasmatron CO2 + C process. The immediate study provides a novel route for efficient CO2 conversion by coupling plasma chemistry and thermochemistry.
Warm Plasma Activation of CO2 in a Rotating Gliding Arc Discharge Reactor

Abstract:In this study, a rotating gliding arc (RGA) warm plasma has been developed for the conversion of CO2 into CO and O-2. The effect of feed flow rate, applied voltage, arc current, and the addition of N-2 or Ar on the reaction performance has been investigated. The results show two variation patterns of CO2 conversion and energy efficiency, depending on the specific energy input (SEI): In Pattern A with SEI > 3.5 kJ/L, the CO2 conversion and energy efficiency decrease simultaneously with increasing SEI, while in Pattern B with SEI <= 3.5 kJ/L, the energy efficiency and the CO2 conversion show an opposite trend. The recombination of CO and O at high temperatures could be responsible for the decrease of CO2 conversion with rising SEI due to the increased retention time or gas temperature. A CO2 conversion of 4.0-4.4% and energy efficiency of 16-17% can be achieved. Compared to other non-thermal plasmas, the RGA plasma exhibits a lower CO2 conversion but higher energy efficiency, whilst maintaining a flow rate (e.g, 6-7 L/min) that is significantly higher than that of typical nonthermal plasmas (e.g., 20-125 ml/min in dielectric barrier and corona discharges). Increasing the fraction of N-2 or Ar promotes the conversion of CO2 but lowers the energy efficiency. N-2 is clearly more beneficial for enhancing the CO 2 conversion in comparison to Ar. Further enhancement of the reaction performance can be expected by cooling the plasma area to lower the gas temperature, to limit the recombination of CO and O.
Triboelectric Plasma CO2 Reduction Reaching a Mechanical Energy Conversion Efficiency of 2.3

Abstract:Mechanical energy-induced CO2 reduction is a promising strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously harvesting mechanical energy. Unfortunately, the low energy conversion efficiency is still an open challenge. Here, multiple-pulse, flow-type triboelectric plasma with dual functions of harvesting mechanical energy and driving chemical reactions is introduced to efficiently reduce CO2 . CO selectivity of 92.4% is achieved under normal temperature and pressure, and the CO and O2 evolution rates reach 12.4 and 6.7 µmol h-1 , respectively. The maximum energy conversion efficiencies of 2.3% from mechanical to chemical energy and 31.9% from electrical to chemical energy are reached. The low average electron energy in triboelectric plasma and vibrational excitation dissociation of CO2 with low barrier is revealed by optical emission spectra and plasma simulations, which enable the high energy conversion efficiency. The approach of triboelectric plasma reduction reported here provides a promising strategy for efficient utilization of renewable and dispersed mechanical energy.

The first prototype units are built even if most research is still at the laboratory scale. Many challenges still need to be solved, notwithstanding the recent mechanistic understanding. However, R&D still needs to be more focused on critical questions. The same is observed for plasma catalysis synergy. The recent results, prospects and gaps in plasma-activated CO2 conversion and the issue of catalyst design are critically discussed.

Inhibiting Recombination to Improve the Performance of Plasma-Based CO2 Conversion

Abstract:Warm plasma offers a promising route for CO2 splitting into valuable CO, yet recombination reactions of CO with oxygen, forming again CO2, have recently emerged as critical limitation. This study combines experiments and fluid dynamics + chemical kinetics modelling to comprehensively analyse the recombination reactions upon CO2 splitting in an atmospheric plasmatron. We introduce an innovative in -situ gas sampling technique, enabling 2D spatial mapping of gas product compositions and temperatures, experimentally confirming for the first time the substantial limiting effect of CO recombination reactions in the afterglow region. Our results show that the CO mole fraction at a 5 L/min flow rate drops significantly from 11.9 % at a vertical distance of z = 20 mm in the afterglow region to 8.6 % at z = 40 mm. We constructed a comprehensive 2D model that allows for spatial reaction rates analysis incorporating crucial reactions, and we validated it to kinetically elucidate this phenomenon. CO2 +MO reversible arrow CO +M and CO2 +O reversible arrow CO +O-2 are the dominant reactions, with the forward reactions prevailing in the plasma region and the backward reactions becoming prominent in the afterglow region. These results allow us to propose an afterglow quenching strategy for performance enhancement, which is further demonstrated through a meticulously developed plasmatron reactor with two-stage cooling. Our approach substantially increases the CO2 conversion (e.g., from 6.6 % to 19.5 % at 3 L/min flow rate) and energy efficiency (from 13.5 % to 28.5 %, again at 3 L/min) and significantly shortens the startup time (from similar to 150 s to 25 s). Our study underscores the critical role of inhibiting recombination reactions in plasma-based CO2 conversion and offers new avenues for performance enhancement.
The CO2 Conversion in a DBD Plasma: A 1D Synergistic Catalysis Model

Abstract:Objective: Plasma catalysis is regarded as a promising technology in mitigating atmospheric CO2, but there is still a gap between industrial demand and current efficiency. This paper aimed to investigate the synergistic effect between vibrational states and catalyst surfaces in plasma catalysis, and to offer a theoretical guide on how to maximize the effectiveness of the synergistic effect in a more energy-efficient way. Methods: A novel 1D dielectric barrier discharge plasma catalysis model has been developed. The Arrhenius equations were used to solve the surface catalytic chemistry. The influence of CO2 vibrational excitation on surface reaction rates were expressed in the framework of the theoretical-informational approach. Results: The simulation suggested that a lower electron temperature fosters vibrational excitation, while a higher electron temperature promotes electronic excitation, therefore, the CO2 conversion rate and energy efficiency were difficult to be improved simultaneously. Furthermore, our model elucidates the pivotal role of catalysts in achieving efficient decomposition of vibrationally excited CO2 (CO2v). However, under conditions of low vibrational density, this synergistic effect fails to yield substantial improvements in catalytic efficiency under low vibrational density conditions. Conclusion: By increasing the pulse voltage, using narrow pulses with rapid rise times, implementing rapid cooling techniques and enlarging the surface catalytic area, the concentrations of CO2v can be augmented. Consequently, the dissociation rate via the V-V process and surface processes can both be enhanced, thereby potentially enabling simultaneous improvements in the CO2 conversion rate and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Although dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma is a promising technique for CO2 conversion, realizing CO2-to-alcohol is still challenging via the use of H2O. Herein, for the first time, efficient CO2 conversion was achieved via the synergism between the Cs2SnCl6 photocatalyst and DBD plasma assisted by H2O. The CO2 conversion ratio of plasma photocatalysis was 6.5% higher than that of only the plasma and photocatalysis, implying that the synergism of plasma catalysis and photocatalysis was achieved. Furthermore, the DBD plasma assisted by the Cs2SnCl6 photocatalyst could convert CO2 and H2O to CO and a small amount of methanol and ethanol. The CO2 conversion ratio was enhanced by 50.6% in the presence of H2O, which was attributed to the improvement of charge transfer due to the increased electrical conductivity of the photocatalyst surface during plasma discharge. This work provides a new idea for developing an efficient system for CO2 utilization.

Upscaling Plasma-Based CO2 Conversion: Case Study of a Multi-Reactor Gliding Arc Plasmatron

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure plasmas have shifted in recent years from being a burgeoning research field in the academic setting to an actively investigated technology in the chemical, oil, and environmental industries. This is largely driven by the climate change mitigation efforts, as well as the evident pathways of value creation by converting greenhouse gases (such as CO2) into useful chemical feedstock. Currently, most high technology readiness level (TRL) plasma-based technologies are based on volumetric and power-based scaling of thermal plasma systems, which results in large capital investment and regular maintenance costs. This work investigates bringing a quasi-thermal (so-called "warm") plasma setup, namely, a gliding arc plasmatron, from a lab-scale to a pilot-scale capacity with an increase in throughput capacity by a factor of 10. The method of scaling is the parallelization of plasmatron reactors within a single housing, with the aim of maintaining a warm plasma regime while simultaneously improving build cost and efficiency (compared to separate reactors operating in parallel). Special attention is also given to the safety and control features implemented in the setup, a key component required for integration into industrial systems. The performance of the multi-reactor gliding arc plasmatron (MRGAP) reactor is investigated, focusing on the influence of flow rate and the number of active reactors. The location of active reactors was deemed to have a negligible effect on the monitored metrics of conversion, energy efficiency, and energy cost. The optimum operating conditions were found to be with the most active reactors (five) at the highest investigated flow rate (80 L/min). Analysis of results suggests that an optimum conversion (9%) and plug power-based energy efficiency (19%) can be maintained at a specific energy input (SEI) around 5.3 kJ/L (or 1 eV/molecule). The concept of parallelization of plasmatron reactors within a singular housing was demonstrated to be a viable method for scaling up from a lab-scale to a prototype-scale device, with performance analysis suggesting that increasing the power (through adding more reactor channels) and total flow rate, while maintaining an SEI around 5.3 or 4.2 kJ/L, i.e., 1.3 or 1 eV/molecule (based on plug power and plasma-deposited power, respectively), can result in increased conversion rate without sacrificing absolute conversion or energy efficiency.

Abstract:A possible strategy to increase the added value from CCS, is to consider it as a raw material for the production of liquid fuels, or chemical products. The most studied ways related to CO2 reduction, with formation of molecules such as CH3OH or syngas, is the reaction with H2 (exothermic reaction needing catalytic activation), or CH4 (endothermic reaction taking place at high temperature) with the use of a catalyst. The synthesis of CH3OH is performed on Lewis acid type sites (default of electrons) Cu/Zn/Al2O3. However the products of the reaction i.e. the water and methanol molecules, are very polar, resulting in a very low desorption rate. So in this reaction the key step is water desorption (Lewis basis). The increase of temperature in order to increase this desorption rate, leads to a cracking and the deposition of carbon in the catalyst, limiting its lifetime. Plasma driven catalysis allows firstly, a vibrational activation of CO2, H2 or CH4 through electron-molecule collisions, making easier their dissociation at low temperature and secondly expels water from the catalyst sites by supplying electrons (electropolarisation). The results show an increase of the yield in CH3OH with plasma and catalyst, confirming the action of the plasma. However energy consumption remains relatively high.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) through non-thermal plasma catalysis has received significant attention as a promising approach to address both environmental and energy challenges. This review paper offers a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in CO 2 conversion utilizing non-thermal plasma (NTP), focusing on its potential to achieve efficient and selective transformations of CO 2 into valuable products, such as fuels and chemicals, at moderate reaction conditions. The unique ability of NTP to activate CO 2 at ambient room temperature and atmospheric pressure offers a promising pathway to mitigate the greenhouse effect and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. We highlight the utilization of catalysts in combination with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor, showcasing encouraging results in enhancing product selectivity and overall CO 2 conversion. Nevertheless, challenges associated with the conversion of CO 2 into specific oxygenates, like methanol, are also discussed. The maximum methanol selectivity reported from recent studies was ~86% from CO 2 hydrogenation reaction with DBD reactor. This review provides valuable insights for researchers working on sustainable CO 2 utilization strategies and aids in guiding future investigations in this burgeoning field.

Abstract:Membrane reactors offer a promising approach to converting CO 2 into chemicals, fuels, and value-added products. However, challenges remain in its high energy input and deactivation of the catalyst. Here, we report a breakthrough strategy that uses dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to enhance the CO 2 splitting in a perovskite-based La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3-δ (LSCF) membrane reactor where a traditional catalyst is not required however instead relies on the highly reactive species generated by the CO 2 plasma. The CO 2 conversion, physical and chemical evolution of membranes at different temperatures, CO 2 plasma power, and purging gas were systematically investigated. The maximum CO 2 conversion was achieved at 800 °C and 25 W while reaching 10.6%, 20.0%, and 28.0% via helium, complete oxidation of methane, and partial oxidation of methane purging on the permeate side, respectively. The experimental results obtained under low plasma power consumption suggest that the plasma-assisted membrane reactor strategy has the potential to be energy-efficient and sustainable, particularly when combined with renewable energy sources.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 and CH4 greenhouse gases (GHGs) into high-value products using cleaner, sustainable, and renewable-energy-electrified processes is a critical step towards the ultimate decarbonization of our economy and society. Here, we demonstrate an industry-relevant, scalable, plasma-electrified roll-to-roll process to produce vertical graphenes (VGs) for energy storage and syngas from the GHG feedstock with a one-round conversion efficiency of similar to 80%. The growth temperature of VGs from an appropriate mixture of CO2 and CH4 is reduced from the expected 700 degrees C to only 300 degrees C due to the effective dissociation of CH4 caused by reactive plasma-generated oxygen-containing species. A new pilot-scale process is developed to fabricate highly-branched VGs from CH4 + CO2 gas mixture on a large area (10 x 100 cm(2)) nickel foil under plasmas generated by a roll-toroll linear microwave antenna. The analysis of gaseous products and carbon mass flow reveals that most of the GHG mix is effectively converted into the high-value syngas (CO and H-2). Our results demonstrate the integrated re-carbon (re-use of GHGs), up-carbon (conversion of GHG into high-value carbon-based products, HVCBPs), and de-carbon (using the electrification to reduce process-related carbon emissions while producing HVCBPs for clean energy storage) approach that is environmentally benign, scalable, and industry-relevant. Widespread adoption of similar re-carbon - up-carbon - de-carbon process cycles at industry-relevant scales will significantly enhance the production of active nanocarbon materials for diverse applications, while contributing to the achievement of the ultimate zero-carbon-emissions global targets.
