Abstract:The aim of this brief note for the volume in honor of S. S. Chern is to give a construction for $p$-torsion line bundles in characteristic $p>0$ which plays a similar rôle as the standard connection on an $n$-torsion line bundle in characteristic 0.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, let $\Omega_F$ be Drinfeld's upper half-plane over $F$ and let $G^0$ the subgroup of $GL_2(F)$ consisting of elements whose determinant has norm $1$. By working locally on $\Omega_F$, we construct and classify the torsion $G^0$-equivariant line bundles with integrable connection on $\Omega$ in terms of the smooth linear characters of the units of the maximal order of the quaternion algebra over $F$.

Torsion in $p$-adic étale cohomology: remarks and conjectures

Abstract:Let $C$ be a complete algebraically closed extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $\mathfrak{X}$ be a smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{O}_C$. By the work of Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze, it is known that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is proper, the length of the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of the generic fiber $\mathfrak{X}_C$ is bounded above by the length of the torsion in the crystalline cohomology of its special fiber. In this note, we focus on the non-proper case and observe that when $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ can even be expressed as a functor of the special fiber, unlike in the proper case. As a consequence, we show that, surprisingly, if $\mathfrak{X}$ is affine, the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology groups of $\mathfrak{X}_C$ have finite torsion subgroups. We discuss further applications and propose conjectures predicting the torsion in the integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of a broader class of rigid-analytic varieties over $C$.

Abstract:Let $Y\to X$ be an unramified Galois cover of curves over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(Y/X)\cong\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, and let $J_X$ and $J_Y$ be the Jacobians of $X$ and $Y$ respectively. We consider the $p$-torsion subgroup schemes $J_X[p]$ and $J_Y[p]$, analyze the Galois-module structure of $J_Y[p]$, and find restrictions this structure imposes on $J_Y[p]$ (for example, as manifested in its Ekedahl--Oort type) taking $J_X[p]$ as given.

Abstract:We study the relation between torsion tensors of principal connections on G-structures and characteristic conic connections on associated cone structures. We formulate sufficient conditions under which the existence of a characteristic conic connection implies the existence of a torsion-free principal connection. We verify these conditions for adjoint varieties of simple Lie algebras, excluding those of type $\textsf{A}_{\ell \neq 2}$ or $\textsf{C}_{\ell}$. As an application, we give a complete classification of the germs of minimal rational curves whose VMRT at a general point is such an adjoint variety: nontrivial ones come from lines on hyperplane sections of certain Grassmannians or minimal rational curves on wonderful group compactifications.

Boundedness of the $p$-primary torsion of the Brauer group of an abelian variety

Abstract:We prove that the $p^\infty$-torsion of the transcendental Brauer group of an abelian variety over a finitely generated field of characteristic $p>0$ is bounded. This answers a (variant of a) question asked by Skorobogatov and Zarhin for abelian varieties. To do this, we prove a "flat Tate conjecture" for divisors. In the text, we also study other geometric Galois-invariant $p^\infty$-torsion classes of the Brauer group which are not in the transcendental Brauer group. These classes, in contrast with our main theorem, can be infinitely $p$-divisible. We explain how the existence of these $p$-divisible towers is naturally related to the failure of surjectivity of specialisation morphisms of Néron--Severi groups in characteristic $p$.

Remarks on $p$-primary torsion of the Brauer group

Abstract:For a smooth and proper variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, the group $Br(X)[p^\infty]$ is a direct sum of finitely many copies of $\mathbb{Q}_p/\mathbb{Z}_p$ and an abelian group of finite exponent. The latter is an extension of a finite group $J$ by the group of $k$-points of a connected commutative unipotent algebraic group $U$. In this paper we show that (1) if $X$ is ordinary, then $U = 0$; (2) if $X$ is a surface, then $J$ is the Pontryagin dual of $NS(X)[p^\infty]$; (3) if $X$ is an abelian variety, then $J = 0$. Using Crew's formula, we compute $Br(X)[p^\infty]$ for Enriques surfaces and abelian $3$-folds. Generalizing a result of Ogus, we give a criterion for the injectivity of the canonical map from flat to crystalline cohomology in degree $2$.

Chern correspondence for higher principal bundles

Abstract:The classical Chern correspondence states that a choice of Hermitian metric on a holomorphic vector bundle determines uniquely a unitary 'Chern connection'. This basic principle in Hermitian geometry, later generalized to the theory of holomorphic principal bundles, provides one of the most fundamental ingredients in modern gauge theory, via its applications to the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau Theorem. In this work we study a generalization of the Chern correspondence in the context of higher gauge theory, where the structure group of the bundle is categorified. For this, we define connective structures on a multiplicative gerbe and propose a natural notion of complexification for an important class of 2-groups. Using this, we put forward a new notion of higher connection which is well-suited for describing holomorphic principal 2-bundles for these 2-groups, and establish a Chern correspondence in this way. As an upshot of our construction, we unify two previous notions of higher connections in the literature, namely those of adjusted connections and of trivializations of Chern-Simons 2-gerbes with connection.

Torsors under finite and flat group schemes of rank p with Galois action

Abstract:In this note we study the geometry of torsors under flat and finite commutative group schemes of rank p above curves in characteristic p and above relative curves over a complete discrete valuation ring of inequal characteristics. In bothe cases we study the Galois action of the Galois group of the base field on these torsors. We also study degeneration of $\mu_p$-torsors from characteristic 0 to characteristic p and show that this degeneration is compatible with the Galois action. We then discuss the lifting of torsors under flat and commutative group schemes of rank p from positive to 0 characteristics. finally, for a proper and smooth curve X over a complete discrete valuation field of inequal characteristics we show the existence of a canonical Galois equivariant filtration on the first etale cohomology group of the geometric fibre of X with values in $\mu_p$. This apaper is the first of a series of papers [Sa] and [Sa-1] where we compute the vanishing cycles arising from degeneration of $\mu_p$-torsors above curves as well as the semi-stable reduction of these torsors and the Galois action on them.

Abstract:The $\bar{\partial}_{_{J}}$ operator over an almost complex manifold induces canonical connections of type $(0,1)$ over the bundles of $(p,0)$-forms. If the almost complex structure is integrable then the previous connections induce the canonical holomorphic structures of the bundles of $(p,0)$-forms. For $p=1$ we can extend the corresponding connection to all Schur powers of the bundle of $(1,0)$-forms. Moreover using the canonical $\C$-linear isomorphism betwen the bundle of $(1,0)$-forms and the complex cotangent bundle $T^*_{X,J}$ we deduce canonical connections of type $(0,1)$ over the Schur powers of the complex cotangent bundle $T^*_{X,J}$. If the almost complex structure is integrable then the previous $(0,1)$-connections induces the canonical holomorphic structures of those bundles. In the non integrable case those $(0,1)$-connections induces just the holomorphic canonical structures of the restrictions of the corresponding bundles to the images of smooth $J$-holomorphic curves. We introduce the notion of Chern curvature for those bundles. The geometrical meaning of this notion is a natural generalisation of the classical notion of Chern curvature for the holomophic vector bundles over a complex manifold. We have a particular interest for the case of the tangent bundle in view of applications concerning the regularisation of $J$-plurisubharmonic fonctions by means of the geodesic flow induced by a Chern connection on the tangent bundle. This method has been used by Demailly in the complex integrable case. Our specific study in the case of the tangent bundle gives an asymptotic expanson of the Chern flow which relates in a optimal way the geometric obstructions caused by the torsion of the almost complex structure, and the non symplectic nature of the metric.

Abstract:For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.

Cobordism Obstructions to Complex Sections II: Torsion Obstructions

Abstract:In the previous paper, we studied obstructions to the existence of complex sections on almost complex manifolds up to cobordism. We determined the obstruction rationally, in terms of the Chern classes. In this paper, we study the torsion obstructions, that is, the obstructions which vanish after tensoring with $\mathbb{Q}$ or multiplication by an integer. Calculations with the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for the Thom spectra $\mathbf{MTU}(d)$ allow us to show the torsion obstructions for low $r$. For prime $p\geq 3$, we show that torsion obstructions for finding $r$ complex sections of order $p$ vanish for $r<p^2-p$.

On p-torsions of geometric Brauer groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.

Abstract:We give a classification of all equivariant line of bundles on the semi-stable model $\hat{\mathbb{H}}$ of the Drinfeld upper half plane $\mathbb{H}$ on $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for a certain subgroup $[G]_2$ of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ of index $2$. Then we study the cohomology groups of these line bundles that we restrict on the special fiber $\bar{\mathbb{H}}$ and this process provides a whole family of mod $p$ representations. In particular, we exhibit a class of $[G]_2$-equivariant line bundles on $\bar{\mathbb{H}}$ (the so-called positives of weight $-1$) and show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with the irreducible supersingular representations of $[G]_2$ (a notion we define) by taking the contragredient of the global sections.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{X}=[X_1\rightrightarrows X_0]$ be a Lie groupoid equipped with a connection, given by a smooth distribution $\mathcal{H} \subset T X_1$ transversal to the fibers of the source map. Under the assumption that the distribution $\mathcal{H}$is integrable, we define a version of de Rham cohomology for the pair $(\mathbb{X}, \mathcal{H})$, and we study connections on principal $G$-bundles over $(\mathbb{X}, \mathcal{H})$ in terms of the associated Atiyah sequence of vector bundles. We also discuss associated constructions for differentiable stacks. Finally, we develop the corresponding Chern-Weil theory and describe characteristic classes of principal G-bundles over a pair $(\mathbb{X}, \mathcal{H})$.
