Abstract:This paper studies the relationship between the sections and the Chern or Pontrjagin classes of a vector bundle by the theory of connection. Our results are natural generalizations of the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for real Finsler vector bundles with respect to any metric-compatible connection. The key idea is to modify any given metric-compatible connection to be a new metric-compatible connection with some special properties. As a corollary, a Gauss–Bonnet–Chern formula for Finsler manifolds with respect to any metric-compatible connection is established.

Abstract:In this work we study characteristic classes of possibly singular varieties embedded as a closed subvariety of a nonsingular variety. In special, we express the Schwartz-MacPherson class in terms of the $\mu$-class and Chern class of the sheaves of logarithmic and multi-logarithmic differential forms. As an application we show an expression for Euler characteristic of a complement of a singular variety.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:A $Q$-manifold $M$ is a supermanifold endowed with an odd vector field $Q$ squaring to zero. The Lie derivative $L_Q$ along $Q$ makes the algebra of smooth tensor fields on $M$ into a differential algebra. In this paper, we define and study the invariants of $Q$-manifolds called characteristic classes. These take values in the cohomology of the operator $L_Q$ and, given an affine symmetric connection with curvature $R$, can be represented by universal tensor polynomials in the repeated covariant derivatives of $Q$ and $R$ up to some finite order. As usual, the characteristic classes are proved to be independent of the choice of the affine connection used to define them. The main result of the paper is a complete classification of the intrinsic characteristic classes, which, by definition, do not vanish identically on flat $Q$-manifolds. As an illustration of the general theory we interpret some of the intrinsic characteristic classes as anomalies in the BV and BFV-BRST quantization methods of gauge theories. An application to the theory of (singular) foliations is also discussed.

Abstract:We extend the well-known formula for the Euler class of a real oriented even-dimensional vector bundle in terms of the curvature of a metric connection to the case of a general linear connection provided a metric is present. We rewrite the classical Gauss-Bonnet theorem in dimension two in light of this formula. We also discuss a potential application to a conjecture of Chern, and make a brief digression to discuss $m$-quasi-Einstein manifolds.

About extending the Chern-Weil classification to the simplicial principal bundles

Abstract:After introducing the simplicial manifolds, such as the different ways of defining the differential forms on them, we summarized a canonical way of calculating the characteristic classes of a $G$-principal bundle by computing them on the classifying bundle $EG\longrightarrow BG$. Finally, we calculated the first Pontryagin class on the classifying bundle of the Lie matrix groups and showed that for certain of them, the computed form is equal to the symplectic form on $BG$ given by some authors up to a constant coefficient.

Kontsevich's Characteristic Classes as Topological Invariants of Configuration Space Bundles

Abstract:Kontsevich's characteristic classes are invariants of framed smooth fiber bundles with homology sphere fibers. It was shown by Watanabe that they can be used to distinguish smooth $S^4$-bundles that are all trivial as topological fiber bundles. In this article we show that this ability of Kontsevich's classes is a manifestation of the following principle: the ``real blow-up'' construction on a smooth manifold essentially depends on its smooth structure and thus, given a smooth manifold (or smooth fiber bundle) $M$, the topological invariants of spaces constructed from $M$ by real blow-ups could potentially differentiate smooth structures on $M$. The main theorem says that Kontsevich's characteristic classes of a smooth framed bundle $\pi$ are determined by the topology of the 2-point configuration space bundle of $\pi$ and framing data.

Abstract:Given a smooth action of a Lie group on a manifold, we give two constructions of the Chern character of an equivariant vector bundle in the cyclic cohomology of the crossed product algebra. The first construction associates a cycle to the vector bundle whose structure maps are closely related to Getzler's model for equivariant cohomology. The second construction uses a direct map between this model and the (periodic) cyclic cohomology localized at the unit element. Finally, it is shown that the two constructions are equivalent when the action is proper.

Abstract:Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic Cartan geometry (for example, a holomorphic conformal structure or a holomorphic projective connection). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor by allowing noncompact and non-Kähler manifolds and by deriving invariants in cohomology of vector bundles, not just in scalar Dolbeault cohomology, and computing relations involving Chern--Simons invariants in Dolbeault cohomology. For the geometric structures previously considered in its predecessor, this paper gives stronger results and simplifies the computations. It gives the first results on Chern--Simons invariants of Cartan geometries.

Abstract:We prove a generalisation of Bott's vanishing theorem for the full transverse frame holonomy groupoid of any transversely orientable foliated manifold. As a consequence we obtain a characteristic map encoding both primary and secondary characteristic classes. Previous descriptions of this characteristic map are formulated for the Morita equivalent étale groupoid obtained via a choice of complete transversal. By working with the full holonomy groupoid we obtain novel geometric representatives of characteristic classes. In particular we give a geometric, non-étale analogue of the codimension 1 Godbillon-Vey cyclic cocycle of Connes and Moscovici in terms of path integrals of the curvature form of a Bott connection.

Characteristic conic connections and torsion-free principal connections

Abstract:We study the relation between torsion tensors of principal connections on G-structures and characteristic conic connections on associated cone structures. We formulate sufficient conditions under which the existence of a characteristic conic connection implies the existence of a torsion-free principal connection. We verify these conditions for adjoint varieties of simple Lie algebras, excluding those of type $\textsf{A}_{\ell \neq 2}$ or $\textsf{C}_{\ell}$. As an application, we give a complete classification of the germs of minimal rational curves whose VMRT at a general point is such an adjoint variety: nontrivial ones come from lines on hyperplane sections of certain Grassmannians or minimal rational curves on wonderful group compactifications.

Abstract:We provide a natural interpretation of the secondary Euler characteristic and introduce higher Euler characteristics. For a compact oriented manifold of odd dimension, the secondary Euler characteristic recovers the Kervaire semi-characteristic. We prove basic properties of the higher invariants and illustrate their use. We also introduce motivic variants.

Abstract:We show the compatibility of the differential geometric and the topological construction of equivariant characteristic classes for compact Lie groups. Our analysis motivates a differential geometric construction for equivariant characteristic classes in the non-compact case. This compatibility is generally assumed and used in various cases, but there is only a proof for compact connected Lie groups in the literature, see the work of Raoul Bott and Loring Tu. Our proof applies and generalizes ideas of Johan Dupont and Ezra Getzler.

Abstract:This article is concerned with Chern class and Chern number inequalities on polarized manifolds and nef vector bundles. For a polarized pair $(M,L)$ with $L$ very ample, our 1st main result is a family of sharp Chern class inequalities. Among them the 1st one is a variant of a classical result and the equality case of the 2nd one is a characterization of hypersurfaces. The 2nd main result is a Chern number inequality on it, which includes a reverse Miyaoka–Yau-type inequality. The 3rd main result is that the Chern numbers of a nef vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold are bounded below by the Euler number. As an application, we classify compact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature whose Chern numbers are all positive. A conjecture related to the Euler number of compact Kähler manifolds with nonpositive bisectional curvature is proposed, which can be regarded as a complex analogue to the Hopf conjecture.
