Abstract:Kontsevich's characteristic classes are invariants of framed smooth fiber bundles with homology sphere fibers. It was shown by Watanabe that they can be used to distinguish smooth $S^4$-bundles that are all trivial as topological fiber bundles. In this article we show that this ability of Kontsevich's classes is a manifestation of the following principle: the ``real blow-up'' construction on a smooth manifold essentially depends on its smooth structure and thus, given a smooth manifold (or smooth fiber bundle) $M$, the topological invariants of spaces constructed from $M$ by real blow-ups could potentially differentiate smooth structures on $M$. The main theorem says that Kontsevich's characteristic classes of a smooth framed bundle $\pi$ are determined by the topology of the 2-point configuration space bundle of $\pi$ and framing data.

Abstract:A $Q$-manifold $M$ is a supermanifold endowed with an odd vector field $Q$ squaring to zero. The Lie derivative $L_Q$ along $Q$ makes the algebra of smooth tensor fields on $M$ into a differential algebra. In this paper, we define and study the invariants of $Q$-manifolds called characteristic classes. These take values in the cohomology of the operator $L_Q$ and, given an affine symmetric connection with curvature $R$, can be represented by universal tensor polynomials in the repeated covariant derivatives of $Q$ and $R$ up to some finite order. As usual, the characteristic classes are proved to be independent of the choice of the affine connection used to define them. The main result of the paper is a complete classification of the intrinsic characteristic classes, which, by definition, do not vanish identically on flat $Q$-manifolds. As an illustration of the general theory we interpret some of the intrinsic characteristic classes as anomalies in the BV and BFV-BRST quantization methods of gauge theories. An application to the theory of (singular) foliations is also discussed.

Abstract:We construct nearly topological Yang-Mills theories on eight dimensional manifolds with a special holonomy group. These manifolds are the Joyce manifold with $Spin(7)$ holonomy and the Calabi-Yau manifold with SU(4) holonomy. An invariant closed four form $T_{\mu\nu\rho\sigma}$ on the manifold allows us to define an analogue of the instanton equation, which serves as a topological gauge fixing condition in BRST formalism. The model on the Joyce manifold is related to the eight dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Topological dimensional reduction to four dimensions gives non-abelian Seiberg-Witten equation.

Explicit Construction of Hermitian Yang-Mills Instantons on Coset Manifolds

Abstract:In four dimensions, 't Hooft symbols offer a compact and powerful framework for describing the self-dual structures fundamental to instanton physics. Extending this to six dimensions, the six-dimensional 't Hooft symbols can be constructed using the isomorphism between the Lorentz group $Spin(6)$ and the unitary group $SU(4)$. We demonstrate that the six-dimensional self-dual structures governed by the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations can be elegantly organized using these generalized 't Hooft symbols. We also present a systematic method for constructing Hermitian Yang-Mills instantons from spin connections on six-dimensional manifolds using the generalized 't Hooft symbols. We provide a thorough analysis of the topological invariants such as instanton and Euler numbers.

Abstract:We consider 4D $SU(N)$ gauge theories coupled to gravity in the Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) approach, focusing on the topological classification of the gauge path-integral over fixed triangulations. We discretize the topological charge and, after checking the emergence of topology and the continuum scaling on flat triangulations, we show that topology emerges on thermalized triangulations only in the so-called $C$-phase of CDT, thus enforcing the link between such phase and semi-classical space-time. We also provide a tool to visualize the topological structures.

Abstract:This is an introductory survey written in Japanese on classical integrability from the viewpoint of symmetry reduction of 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Twistor construction methods are discussed in detail in 4-dimension. Exact local solutions are, in this article, presented in terms of quasideterminants in a compact form. Some integrable aspects in lower-dimension are clarified in the context of the reduction. Noncommutative extension and higher-dimensional extension are briefly discussed.

Abstract:In 1974, S.-S. Chern and J. Simons published a paper where they defined a new type of characteristic class, one that depends not just on the topology of a manifold but also on the geometry. The goal of this paper is to investigate what kinds of geometric information is contained in these classes by studying their behavior under the Ricci flow. In particular, it is shown that the Chern-Simons class corresponding to the first Pontryagin class is invariant under the Ricci flow on the warped products S 2 × f S 1 S^2\times _f S^1 and S 1 × f S 2 S^1 \times _f S^2 but that this class is not invariant under the Ricci flow on a generalized Berger sphere.

Abstract:In the early 1970's, Gelfand, Kalinin and Fuks found an exotic characteristic class of degree 7 in the Gelfand-Fuks cohomology of the Lie algebra of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on the plane. We prove that this cohomology class can be decomposed as a product of a certain leaf cohomology class of degree 5 and the transverse symplectic class. This is similar to the well known factorization of the Godbillon-Vey class for codimension n foliations. We also interpret the characteristic classes of transversely symplectic foliations introduced by Kontsevich in terms of the known classes and prove non-triviality for some of them.

Abstract:We construct supersymmetric fermionic Wilson loops along general curves in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and along general planar curves in $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ quiver theory. These loops are generalizations of the Zarembo loops and are cohomologically equivalent to them. In $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, we compute their expectation values and verify the cohomological equivalence relation up to the order $g^4$ in perturbation theory.

Abstract:We perform a topological-holomorphic twist of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theory on a four-manifold of the form $M_4=\Sigma_1 \times \Sigma_2$ with Riemann surfaces $\Sigma_{1,2}$, and unravel the mathematical implications of its physics. In particular, we consider different linear combinations of the resulting scalar supercharges under $S$-duality, where this will allow us to derive novel topological and holomorphic invariants of $M_4$ and their Langlands duals. As the twisted theory can be topological along $\Sigma_1$ whence we can dimensionally reduce it to 2d, via the effective sigma-model on $\Sigma_2$, we can also relate these 4d invariants and their Langlands duals to the mirror symmetry of Higgs bundles and that of quasi-topological strings described by the sheaf of chiral differential operators. As an offshoot, we would be able to obtain a fundamental understanding from 4d gauge theory, why chiral differential operators are purely perturbative objects.

Abstract:We classify four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs whose Seiberg-Witten (SW) geometries can be written as hyperelliptic families. By using special Kähler condition of SW geometry, we reduce the problem to one parameter quasi-homogeneous hyperelliptic families $y^2=f(x,t)$. The classification is given by further demanding that the complex algebraic surface defined by $y^2=f(x,t)$ has an isolated singularity. We then write down the full SW geometry by looking at mini-versal deformations of the one parameter family, and the SW differential is also written down. The detailed physical data for these theories are found by matching the theory with other known construction. Our solutions recover the known rank one and rank two results, and give some infinite sequences valid at arbitrary ranks. We also studied $Z_2$ quotient of above hyperelliptic families which give rise to $B$ type and $D$ type conformal gauge theory, and further generalizations.

Generalized complex structure on certain principal torus bundles

Abstract:A principal torus bundle over a complex manifold with even dimensional fiber and characteristic class of type $(1,1)$ admits a family of regular generalized complex structures (GCS) with the fibers as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation. We show that such a generalized complex structure is equivalent to the product of the complex structure on the base and the symplectic structure on the fiber in a tubular neighborhood of an arbitrary fiber if and only if the bundle is flat. This has consequences for the generalized Dolbeault cohomology of the bundle that includes a Künneth formula. On a more general note, if a principal bundle over a complex manifold with a symplectic structure group admits a GCS with the fibers of the bundle as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation, and the GCS is equivalent to a product GCS in a neighborhood of every fiber, then the bundle is flat and symplectic.

Abstract:We classify topological $4$-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$, under some assumptions on the boundary. We apply this to classify surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds with $S^3$ boundary, where the fundamental group of the surface complement is $\mathbb{Z}$. We then compare these homeomorphism classifications with the smooth setting. For manifolds, we show that every Hermitian form over $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm 1}]$ arises as the equivariant intersection form of a pair of exotic smooth 4-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. For surfaces we have a similar result, and in particular we show that every $2$-handlebody with $S^3$ boundary contains a pair of exotic discs.

Abstract:We propose a construction of Kähler and non-Kähler Calabi–Yau manifolds by branched double covers of twistor spaces. In this construction we use the twistor spaces of four-manifolds with self-dual conformal structures, with the examples of connected sum of n ${\mathbb{P}^{2}}$s. We also construct K3-fibered Calabi–Yau manifolds from the branched double covers of the blow-ups of the twistor spaces. These manifolds can be used in heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions. We also construct stable and polystable vector bundles. Some classes of these vector bundles can give rise to supersymmetric grand unified models with three generations of quarks and leptons in four dimensions.
