Abstract:Let $F$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, let $\Omega_F$ be Drinfeld's upper half-plane over $F$ and let $G^0$ the subgroup of $GL_2(F)$ consisting of elements whose determinant has norm $1$. By working locally on $\Omega_F$, we construct and classify the torsion $G^0$-equivariant line bundles with integrable connection on $\Omega$ in terms of the smooth linear characters of the units of the maximal order of the quaternion algebra over $F$.

Abstract:Let $Y\to X$ be an unramified Galois cover of curves over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(Y/X)\cong\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, and let $J_X$ and $J_Y$ be the Jacobians of $X$ and $Y$ respectively. We consider the $p$-torsion subgroup schemes $J_X[p]$ and $J_Y[p]$, analyze the Galois-module structure of $J_Y[p]$, and find restrictions this structure imposes on $J_Y[p]$ (for example, as manifested in its Ekedahl--Oort type) taking $J_X[p]$ as given.

Abstract:For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.

On the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics

Abstract:Using Fourier-Mukai transformations, we prove some results about the ring of unipotent vector bundles on elliptic curves in positive characteristics. This ring was determined by Atiyah in characteristic zero, who showed that it is a polynomial ring in one variable. It turns out that the situation in characteristic p>0 is completely different and rather bizarre: the ring is nonnoetherian and contains a subring whose spectrum contains infinitely many copies of Spec(Z), which are glued with successively higher and higher infinitesimal identification at the point corresponding to the prime p.

Abstract:We give a classification of all equivariant line of bundles on the semi-stable model $\hat{\mathbb{H}}$ of the Drinfeld upper half plane $\mathbb{H}$ on $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for a certain subgroup $[G]_2$ of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ of index $2$. Then we study the cohomology groups of these line bundles that we restrict on the special fiber $\bar{\mathbb{H}}$ and this process provides a whole family of mod $p$ representations. In particular, we exhibit a class of $[G]_2$-equivariant line bundles on $\bar{\mathbb{H}}$ (the so-called positives of weight $-1$) and show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with the irreducible supersingular representations of $[G]_2$ (a notion we define) by taking the contragredient of the global sections.

Torsors on moduli spaces of principal $G$-bundles

Abstract:Let $G$ be a semisimple complex algebraic group with a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, and let $\mathcal{M}^0_{G}$ denote the moduli stack of topologically trivial stable $G$-bundles on a smooth projective curve $C$. Fix a theta characteristic $\kappa$ on $C$ which is even in case $\dim{\mathfrak{g}}$ is odd. We show that there is a nonempty Zariski open substack ${\mathcal U}_\kappa$ of $\mathcal{M}^0_{G}$ such that $H^i(C,\, \text{ad}(E_G)\otimes\kappa) \,=\, 0$, $i\,=\, 1,\, 2$, for all $E_G\,\in\, {\mathcal U}_\kappa$. It is shown that any such $E_G$ has a canonical connection. It is also shown that the tangent bundle $T{U}_\kappa$ has a natural splitting, where $U_{\kappa}$ is the restriction of $\mathcal{U}_{\kappa}$ to the semi-stable locus. We also produce an isomorphism between two naturally occurring $\Omega^1_{{M}^{rs}_{G}}$--torsors on the moduli space of regularly stable ${M}^{rs}_{G}$.

Cobordism Obstructions to Complex Sections II: Torsion Obstructions

Abstract:In the previous paper, we studied obstructions to the existence of complex sections on almost complex manifolds up to cobordism. We determined the obstruction rationally, in terms of the Chern classes. In this paper, we study the torsion obstructions, that is, the obstructions which vanish after tensoring with $\mathbb{Q}$ or multiplication by an integer. Calculations with the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence for the Thom spectra $\mathbf{MTU}(d)$ allow us to show the torsion obstructions for low $r$. For prime $p\geq 3$, we show that torsion obstructions for finding $r$ complex sections of order $p$ vanish for $r<p^2-p$.

Boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of products of varieties

Abstract:Let k be a field finitely generated over its prime subfield. We prove that the quotient of the Brauer group of a product of varieties over k by the Brauer groups of factors has finite exponent. The bulk of the proof concerns p-primary torsion in characteristic p. Our approach gives a more direct proof of the boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of an abelian variety, as recently proved by D'Addezio. We show that the transcendental Brauer group of a Kummer surface over k has finite exponent, but can be infinite when k is an infinite field of positive characteristic. This answers a question of Zarhin and the author.

Abstract:Replacing symmetric powers by divided powers and working over Witt vectors instead of ground fields, I generalize Kawamatas T^1-lifting theorem to characteristic p>0. Combined with the work of Deligne-Illusie on degeneration of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences, this gives unobstructedness for certain Calabi-Yau varieties with free crystalline cohomology modules.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field of degree $g$, and let $p$ be a prime number. We construct $g$ partial Hasse invariants on the characteristic $p$ fiber of the Pappas-Rapoport splitting model of the Hilbert modular variety for $F$ with level prime to $p$, extending the usual partial Hasse invariants defined over the Rapoport locus. In particular, when $p$ ramifies in $F$, we solve the problem of lack of partial Hasse invariants. Using the stratification induced by these generalized partial Hasse invariants on the splitting model, we prove in complete generality the existence of Galois pseudo-representations attached to Hecke eigenclasses of paritious weight occurring in the coherent cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties $\mathrm{mod}$ $p^m$, extending a previous result of M. Emerton and the authors which required $p$ to be unramified in $F$.

Abstract:We show Poincaré Duality for $\mathbf{F}_p$-étale cohomology of a smooth proper rigid-analytic space over a non-archimedean field $K$ of mixed characteristic $(0, p)$. It positively answers the question raised by P. Scholze in [Sch13a]. We prove duality via constructing Faltings' trace map relating Poincaré Duality on the generic fiber to (almost) Grothendieck Duality on the mod-$p$ fiber of a formal model. We also formally deduce Poincaré Duality for $\mathbf{Z}/p^n\mathbf{Z}$, $\mathbf{Z}_p$, and $\mathbf{Q}_p$-coefficients.

Abstract:The Poincaré torsor of a Shimura family of abelian varieties can be viewed both as a family of semi-abelian varieties and as a mixed Shimura variety. We show that the special subvarieties of the latter cannot all be described in terms of the group subschemes of the former. This provides a counter-example to the relative Manin-Mumford conjecture, but also some evidence in favour of Pink's conjecture on unlikely intersections in mixed Shimura varieties. The main part of the article concerns mixed Hodge structures and the uniformization of the Poincaré torsor, but other, more geometric, approaches are also discussed.

Universal Extensions and Ext-Orthogonal Complements of Torsion Classes

Abstract:We show that torsion pairs in Krull--Schmidt abelian categories induce an equivalence between the subcategory of torsion-free objects admitting universal extensions to the torsion subcategory, and a quotient of the ext-orthogonal complement of the torsion subcategory. This generalize an equivalence described by Bauer--Botnan--Oppermann--Steen for tilting-torsion pairs and by Buan--Zhou for functorially finite torsion pairs. The result also provides a more direct proof of the functorially finite case, not relying on the machinery of two-term silting complexes. We illustrate the equivalence in the special case of tube categories. After first appearing on the arXiv, the author learnt that the equivalence has previously been described by Demonet--Iyama.

Semistable Non Abelian Hodge theorem in positive characteristic

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for any reductive group $G$ the moduli space of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles on a curve in characteristic $p$ is a twisted form of the moduli space of semistable flat $G$-connections. This is the semistable version of a previous result of Chen-Zhu, and the $G$-bundle version of a previous result of de Cataldo-Groechenig-Zhang. As a consequence, we show that the Decomposition Theorem for the Hitchin morphism for $G$-Higgs bundles has the same shape as that for the de Rham-Hitchin morphism for flat $G$-connections.

Lattice theory of torsion classes: Beyond $τ$-tilting theory

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish a lattice theoretical framework to study the partially ordered set $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} A$ of torsion classes over a finite-dimensional algebra $A$. We show that $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} A$ is a complete lattice which enjoys very strong properties, as bialgebraicity and complete semidistributivity. Thus its Hasse quiver carries the important part of its structure, and we introduce the brick labelling of its Hasse quiver and use it to study lattice congruences of $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} A$. In particular, we give a representation-theoretical interpretation of the so-called forcing order, and we prove that $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} A$ is completely congruence uniform. When $I$ is a two-sided ideal of $A$, $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} (A/I)$ is a lattice quotient of $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} A$ which is called an algebraic quotient, and the corresponding lattice congruence is called an algebraic congruence. The second part of this paper consists in studying algebraic congruences. We characterize the arrows of the Hasse quiver of $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} A$ that are contracted by an algebraic congruence in terms of the brick labelling. In the third part, we study in detail the case of preprojective algebras $\Pi$, for which $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} \Pi$ is the Weyl group endowed with the weak order. In particular, we give a new, more representation theoretical proof of the isomorphism between $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} k Q$ and the Cambrian lattice when $Q$ is a Dynkin quiver. We also prove that, in type $A$, the algebraic quotients of $\operatorname{\mathsf{tors}} \Pi$ are exactly its Hasse-regular lattice quotients.

Characteristic conic connections and torsion-free principal connections

Abstract:We study the relation between torsion tensors of principal connections on G-structures and characteristic conic connections on associated cone structures. We formulate sufficient conditions under which the existence of a characteristic conic connection implies the existence of a torsion-free principal connection. We verify these conditions for adjoint varieties of simple Lie algebras, excluding those of type $\textsf{A}_{\ell \neq 2}$ or $\textsf{C}_{\ell}$. As an application, we give a complete classification of the germs of minimal rational curves whose VMRT at a general point is such an adjoint variety: nontrivial ones come from lines on hyperplane sections of certain Grassmannians or minimal rational curves on wonderful group compactifications.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to formulate a notion, called a generalized GGP relevant pair, governing the quotient branching law for $p$-adic general linear groups. Such notion relies on a commutation relation between derivatives (from Jacquet functors) and integrals (from parabolic inductions), for which we provide both representation-theoretic and combinatorial perspectives. Our main result proves a duality on those relevant pairs, which is compatible with a dual restriction in branching law.
