Abstract:In Gauthier, Manolaki, and Nestoridis (2021, Advances in Mathematics 381, 107649), in order to correct a false Mergelyan-type statement given in Gamelin and Garnett (1969, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 143, 187–200) on uniform approximation on compact sets K in , the authors introduced a natural function algebra which is smaller than the classical one . In the present paper, we investigate when these two algebras coincide and compare them with the classes of all plausibly approximable functions by polynomials or rational functions or functions holomorphic on open sets containing the compact set K . Finally, we introduce a notion of O -hull of K and strengthen known results.

Abstract:We study the approximation of univariate and multivariate set-valued functions (SVFs) by the adaptation to SVFs of positive samples-based approximation operators for real-valued functions. To this end, we introduce a new weighted average of several sets and study its properties. The approximation results are obtained in the space of Lebesgue measurable sets with the symmetric difference metric. In particular, we apply the new average of sets to adapt to SVFs the classical Bernstein approximation operators, and obtain a set-valued analog of the Weierstrass approximation theorem. The rate of approximation of Hölder continuous SVFs by Bernstein operators is studied and shown to be asymptotically equal to that for real-valued functions. Finally, the results obtained in the metric space of sets are generalized to metric spaces endowed with an average satisfying certain properties.

Abstract:Bernstein polynomials provide a constructive proof for the Weierstrass approximation theorem, which states that every continuous function on a closed bounded interval can be uniformly approximated by polynomials with arbitrary accuracy. Interestingly the proof of this result can be done using elementary probability theory. This way one can even get error bounds for Lipschitz functions. In this note, we present these techniques and show how the method can be extended naturally to other interesting situations. As examples, we obtain in an elementary way results for the Szász-Mirakjan operator and the Baskakov operator.

Abstract:We consider the problem of approximation of a continuous function $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ by elements from a sum of two algebras. We prove a de la Vallée Poussin type theorem, which estimates the approximation error $E(f)$ from below. We also obtain a duality formula for the precise computation of $E(f)$.

Abstract:An extension of Szemerédi's Theorem is proved for sets of positive density in approximate lattices in general locally compact and second countable abelian groups. As a consequence, we establish a recent conjecture of Klick, Strungaru and Tcaciuc. Via a novel version of Furstenberg's Correspondence principle, which should be of independent interest, we show that our Szemerédi Theorems can be deduced from a general \emph{transverse} multiple recurrence theorem, which we establish using recent works of Austin.

Abstract:We study a class of non-local functionals that was introduced by Brezis-Seeger-Van Schaftingen-Yung (2022), and can be used to characterize functions of bounded variation. We give a new lower bound for the liminf of these functionals, involving the three different parts of the total variation, with sharp coefficients.

Abstract:In this manuscript, a new family of ( , )-Bernstein–Kantorovich operators are introduced. A Kovovkin type approximation theorem is obtained, the rate of convergence and A -statistical convergence are investigated by using the modulus of smoothness, Steklov mean and Korovkin-type statistical approximation theorem, graphical representations and numerical examples are also presented to compare the newly defined ones with other forms. Finally, an asymptotic estimate on the rate of convergence for some absolutely continuous functions are derived by using the Bojainc–Cheng decomposition method and some analysis techniques.

Abstract:In the work of Donoho and Stark, they study a manifestation of the uncertainty principle in signal recovery. They conjecture that, for a function with support of bounded size T, the maximum concentration of its Fourier transform in the low frequencies [-W/2,W/2] is achieved when the support of the function is an interval. They are able to prove a positive result under the extra assumption that WT $\leq$ 0.8, using an inequality with symmetric rearrangements. In our work, we present a more elementary proof of their result, while also relaxing the required bound to WT $\leq$ 1. Finally, we also study a discrete version of the problem, by considering complex polynomials and their concentration on subsets of the unit circle, and we prove an analogous problem. Lastly, this result is used to improve an inequality by Montgomery.

Abstract:We compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $\psi$-exactly approximable vectors, in the simultaneous case, in dimension strictly larger than $2$ and for approximating functions $\psi$ with order at infinity less than or equal to $-2$. Our method relies on the analogous result in dimension $1$, proved by Yann Bugeaud and Carlos Moreira, and a version of Jarník's Theorem on fibres.

Abstract:Let $v$ be an odd real polynomial (i.e. a polynomial of the form $\sum_{j=1}^\ell a_jx^{2j-1}$). We utilize sets of iterated differences to establish new results about sets of the form $\mathcal R(v,\epsilon)=\{n\in\mathbb{N}\,|\,\|v(n)\|{<\epsilon\}}$ where $\|\cdot\|$ denotes the distance to the closest integer. We then apply the new diophantine results to obtain applications to ergodic theory and combinatorics. In particular, we obtain a new characterization of weakly mixing systems as well as a new variant of Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem.

Abstract:This paper explores the concept of approximate Birkhoff–James orthogonality in the context of operators on semi-Hilbert spaces. These spaces are generated by positive semi-definite sesquilinear forms. We delve into the fundamental properties of this concept and provide several characterizations of it. Using innovative arguments, we extend a widely known result initially proposed by Magajna [17]. Additionally, we improve a recent result by Sen and Paul [24] regarding a characterization of approximate numerical radius orthogonality of two semi-Hilbert space operators, such that one of them is -positive. Here, is assumed to be a positive semi-definite operator.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 04, Page 595-608, December 2024. We study weak approximation with Brauer–Manin obstruction with respect to extensions of number fields. For any nontrivial extension [math], assuming a conjecture of M. Stoll, we prove that there exists a [math]-threefold satisfying weak approximation with Brauer–Manin obstruction off all archimedean places, while its base change to [math] fails. Then we illustrate this construction with an explicit unconditional example.

Abstract:We introduce new vanishing subspaces of the homogeneous Hölder space $\dot{C}^{0,\omega}(X,Y),$ in the generality of a doubling modulus $\omega$ and normed spaces $X$ and $Y.$ For many couples $X,Y,$ we show these vanishing subspaces to completely characterize those Hölder functions that admit approximations, in the Hölder seminorm, by smooth, Lipschitz and boundedly supported functions. Beyond the intrinsic interest of these results, we also present connections to bi-parameter harmonic analysis on the Euclidean space and in particular to compactness of the bi-commutator.
