Abstract:Given its widespread application in machine learning and optimization, the Kronecker product emerges as a pivotal linear algebra operator. However, its computational demands render it an expensive operation, leading to heightened costs in spectral approximation of it through traditional computation algorithms. Existing classical methods for spectral approximation exhibit a linear dependency on the matrix dimension denoted by $n$, considering matrices of size $A_1 \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times d}$ and $A_2 \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times d}$. Our work introduces an innovative approach to efficiently address the spectral approximation of the Kronecker product $A_1 \otimes A_2$ using quantum methods. By treating matrices as quantum states, our proposed method significantly reduces the time complexity of spectral approximation to $O_{d,\epsilon}(\sqrt{n})$.

Abstract:Extending an earlier estimate for the degree of approximation of overiterated univariate Bernstein operators towards the same operator of degree one, it is shown that an analogous result holds in the $d$-variate case. The method employed can be carried over to many other cases and is not restricted to Bernstein-type or similar methods.

Abstract:Kronecker product is a powerful operation in matrix computations. This paper presents a technique called multiple Kronecker product sum (or shortly MKPS) approximation. We show that a matrix can be exactly represented or approximated, to within a specific tolerance, by the sum of multiple Kronecker products of lower dimension matrices. Since an image can be viewed as a matrix, MKPS approximation serves as an alternative image representation. We develop an image decomposition-reconstruction framework based on MKPS approximation. Our current results show that MKPS approximation is an attractive and flexible transform which offers an alternative way for understanding images.

Abstract:The inhomogeneous Khintchine-Groshev Theorem is a classical generalization of Khintchine's Theorem in Diophantine approximation, by approximating points in $\mathbb{R}^m$ by systems of linear forms in $n$ variables. Analogous to the question considered by Duffin and Schaeffer for Khintchine's Theorem (which is the case $m = n = 1$), the question arises for which $m,n$ the monotonicity can be safely removed. If $m = n = 1$, it is known that monotonicity is needed. Recently, Allen and Ramirez showed that for $mn \geq 3$, the monotonicity assumption is unnecessary, conjecturing this to also hold when $mn = 2$. In this article, we confirm this conjecture for the case $(m,n)=(1,2)$ whenever the inhomogeneous parameter is a non-Liouville irrational number. Furthermore, under mild assumptions on the approximation function, we show an asymptotic formula (with almost square-root cancellation), which is not even known for homogeneous approximation. The proof makes use of refined overlap estimates in the 1-dimensional setting, which may have other applications including the inhomogeneous Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture.

Inhomogeneous Diophantine Approximation on $M_0$-sets

Abstract:We prove new quantitative Schmidt-type theorem for Diophantine approximations with restraint denominators on fractals (more precisely, on $M_0$-sets). Our theorems introduce a sharp balance condition between the growth rate of the sequence of denominators and the decay rate of the Fourier transform of a Rajchman measure. Among the other things, this allows applications to sequences of denominators of polynomial growth. In particular, we infer new inhomogeneous Khintchine-Järnik type theorems with restraint denominators for a broad family of denominator sequences. Furthermore, our results provide non-trivial lower bounds for Hausdorff dimensions of intersections of two sets of inhomogeneously well-approximable numbers with restraint denominators.

Abstract:In 1974, M. B. Nathanson proved that every irrational number $\alpha$ represented by a simple continued fraction with infinitely many elements greater than or equal to $k$ is approximable by an infinite number of rational numbers $p/q$ satisfying $|\alpha-p/q|<1/(\sqrt{k^2+4}q^2)$. In this paper we refine this result.

Abstract:We prove a version of the Khinchin–Groshev theorem for Diophantine approximation of matrices subject to a congruence condition. The proof relies on an extension of the Dani correspondence to the quotient by a congruence subgroup. This correspondence together with a multiple ergodic theorem are used to study rational approximations in several congruence classes simultaneously. The result in this part holds in the generality of weighted approximation but is restricted to simple approximation functions.

Abstract:Given a monotonically decreasing $\psi: \mathbb{N} \to [0,\infty)$, Khintchine's Theorem provides an efficient tool to decide whether, for almost every $\alpha \in \mathbb{R}$, there are infinitely many $(p,q) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ such that $\left\lvert \alpha - \frac{p}{q}\right\rvert \leq \frac{\psi(q)}{q}$. The recent result of Koukoulopoulos and Maynard provides an elegant way of removing monotonicity when only counting reduced fractions. Gallagher showed a multiplicative higher-dimensional generalization to Khintchine's Theorem, again assuming monotonicity. In this article, we prove the following Duffin-Schaeffer-type result for multiplicative approximations: For any $k\geq 1$, any function $\psi: \mathbb{N} \to [0,1/2]$ (not necessarily monotonic) and almost every $\alpha \in \mathbb{R}^k$, there exist infinitely many $q$ such that $\prod\limits_{i=1}^k \left\lvert \alpha_i - \frac{p_i}{q}\right\rvert \leq \frac{\psi(q)}{q^k}, p_1,\ldots,p_k$ all coprime to $q$, if and only if \[\sum\limits_{q \in \mathbb{N}} \psi(q) \left(\frac{\varphi(q)}{q} \right)^k\log \left(\frac{q}{\varphi(q)\psi(q)}\right)^{k-1} = \infty.\] This settles a conjecture of Beresnevich, Haynes, and Velani.

Abstract:In the present manuscript, we study the approximation properties of modified Szász Kantorovich operators with a new modification of blending type which depends on parameters, and . Further, we prove a Korovkin-type approximation theorem and obtain the rate of convergence of these operators. Next, their graphical depiction, error analysis and convergence behaviour of these operators for the different functional spaces are discussed. Moreover, univariate and bivariate version of these sequences of operators are introduced in their respective blocks. Rate of convergence, order of approximation, local approximation, global approximation in terms of weight function and A -statistical approximation results are investigated via first and second-order modulus of smoothness, Lipschitz classes, Peetre's K -functional in different spaces of functions.

Abstract:In this manuscript, a new family of ( , )-Bernstein–Kantorovich operators are introduced. A Kovovkin type approximation theorem is obtained, the rate of convergence and A -statistical convergence are investigated by using the modulus of smoothness, Steklov mean and Korovkin-type statistical approximation theorem, graphical representations and numerical examples are also presented to compare the newly defined ones with other forms. Finally, an asymptotic estimate on the rate of convergence for some absolutely continuous functions are derived by using the Bojainc–Cheng decomposition method and some analysis techniques.

Abstract:In Gauthier, Manolaki, and Nestoridis (2021, Advances in Mathematics 381, 107649), in order to correct a false Mergelyan-type statement given in Gamelin and Garnett (1969, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 143, 187–200) on uniform approximation on compact sets K in , the authors introduced a natural function algebra which is smaller than the classical one . In the present paper, we investigate when these two algebras coincide and compare them with the classes of all plausibly approximable functions by polynomials or rational functions or functions holomorphic on open sets containing the compact set K . Finally, we introduce a notion of O -hull of K and strengthen known results.

Abstract:We consider the problem of approximation of a continuous function $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ by elements from a sum of two algebras. We prove a de la Vallée Poussin type theorem, which estimates the approximation error $E(f)$ from below. We also obtain a duality formula for the precise computation of $E(f)$.

In particular, when approximating a function $f$ on a compact set $K$, the critical points of our approximants may be taken to lie in any given domain containing $K$, and all the critical values in any given neighborhood of the polynomially convex hull of $f(K)$.

Abstract:We prove a quantitative version of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with an almost sharp error term. Precisely, let $\psi:\mathbb{N}\to[0,1/2]$ be a function such that the series $\sum_{q=1}^\infty \varphi(q)\psi(q)/q$ diverges. In addition, given $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ and $Q\geqslant1$, let $N(\alpha;Q)$ be the number of coprime pairs $(a,q)\in\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{N}$ with $q\leqslant Q$ and $|\alpha-a/q|<\psi(q)/q$. Lastly, let $\Psi(Q)=\sum_{q\leqslant Q}2\varphi(q)\psi(q)/q$, which is the expected value of $N(\alpha;Q)$ when $\alpha$ is uniformly chosen from $[0, 1]$. We prove that $N(\alpha;Q)=\Psi(Q)+O_{\alpha,\varepsilon}(\Psi(Q)^{1/2+\varepsilon})$ for almost all $\alpha$ (in the Lebesgue sense) and for every fixed $\varepsilon>0$. This improves upon results of Koukoulopoulos-Maynard and of Aistleitner-Borda-Hauke.

Abstract:In this short note we provide a quantitative version of the classical Runge approximation property for second order elliptic operators. This relies on quantitative unique continuation results and duality arguments. We show that these estimates are essentially optimal. As a model application we provide a new proof of the result from \cite{F07}, \cite{AK12} on stability for the Calderón problem with local data.
