Abstract:The famous Newton-Kantorovich hypothesis has been used for a long time as a sufficient condition for the convergence of Newton's method to a solution of an equation. Here we present a ''Kantorovich type'' convergence analysis for the Gauss-Newton's method which improves the result in [W.M. Hauszler, A Kantorovich-type convergence analysis for the Gauss-Newton-method, Numer. Math. 48 (1986) 119-125.] and extends the main theorem in [I.K. Argyros, On the Newton-Kantorovich hypothesis for solving equations, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 169 (2004) 315-332]. Furthermore, the radius of convergence ball is also obtained.

Abstract:Assuming that the first derivative of an operator satisfies the Lipschitz condition, a Kantorovich-type convergence criterion for inexact Newton methods is established, which includes the well-known Kantorovich's theorem as a special case. Comparisons and a numerical example are presented to illustrate that our results obtained in the present paper improve and extend some recent results in [X.P. Abstract:The convergence criterion of Newton’s method to find the zeros of a map f from a Lie group to its corresponding Lie algebra is established under the assumption that f satisfies the classical Lipschitz condition, and that the radius of convergence ball is also obtained. Furthermore, the radii of the uniqueness balls of the zeros of f are estimated. Abstract:With the classical assumptions on f, a convergence criterion of Newton's method (independent of affine connections) to find zeros of a mapping f from a Lie group to its Lie algebra is established, and estimates of the convergence domains of Newton's method are obtained, which improve the corresponding results in Owren & Welfert (2000, BIT Numer. Math., 40, 121-145) and Wang & Li (2006, J. Zhejiang Univ. Sci. A, 8, 978-986). Applications to optimization are provided and the results due to Mahony (1996, Linear Algebra Appl., 248, 67-89) are extended and improved accordingly.

Abstract:We prove that under semi-local assumptions, the inexact Newton method with a fixed relative residual error tolerance converges Q-linearly to a zero of the non-linear operator under consideration. Using this result we show that Newton method for minimizing a self-concordant function or to find a zero of an analytic function can be implemented with a fixed relative residual error tolerance. In the absence of errors, our analysis retrieve the classical Kantorovich Theorem on Newton method.

Abstract:The Newton-Kantorovich theorem is extended to validate the convergence of the NewtonJosephy method for solving variational inequality problem. All the convergence conditions can be tested in digital computer. Moreover, the validation delivers automatically the existence domain of the solution and the error estimate. The ideas are illustrated by numerical results.

Abstract:It is well known that Newton's iteration will abort due to the overflow if the derivative of the function at an iterate is singular or almost singular. In this paper, we study a robust revised Newton's method for solving nonlinear equations, which can be carried out with a starting point with a degenerate derivative at an iterative step. It is proved that the method is convergent under the conditions of the Newton-Kantorovich theorem, which implies a larger convergence domain of the method. We also show that our method inherits the fast convergence of Newton's method. Numerical experiments are performed to show the robustness of the proposed method in comparison with the standard Newton's method.

Abstract:One kind of the L-average Lipschitz condition is introduced to covariant derivatives of sections on Riemannian manifolds. A convergence criterion of Newton's method and the radii of the uniqueness balls of the singular points for sections on Riemannian manifolds, which is independent of the curvatures, are established under the assumption that the covariant derivatives of the sections satisfy this kind of the L-average Lipschitz condition. Some applications to special cases including Kantorovich's condition and the γ-condition as well as Smale's α-theory are provided. In particular, the result due to Ferreira and Svaiter [Kantorovich's Theorem on Newton's method in Riemannian manifolds, J. Complexity 18 (2002) 304–329] is extended while the results due to Dedieu Priouret, Malajovich [Newton's method on Riemannian manifolds: covariant alpha theory, IMA J. Numer. Anal. 23 (2003) 395–419] are improved significantly. Moreover, the corresponding results due to Alvarez, Bolter, Munier [A unifying local convergence result for Newton's method in Riemannian manifolds, Found. Comput. Math. to appear] for vector fields and mappings on Riemannian manifolds are also extended.

Abstract:We Study the convergence properties for some inexact Newton-like methods including the inexact Newton methods for solving nonlinear operator equations on Banach spaces. A new type of residual control is presented. Under the assumption that the derivative of the operator satisfies the Holder condition, the radius of convergence ball of the inexact Newton-like methods with the new type of residual control is estimated, and a linear and/or superlinear convergence property is proved, which extends the corresponding result of [B. Morini, Convergence behaviour of inexact Newton methods, Math. Comput. 68 (1999) 1605-1613]. As an application, we show that the inexact Newton-like method presented in [R.H. Chan, H.L. Chang, S.F. Xu, The inexact Newton-like method for inverse eigenvalue problem, BIT Numer. Math. 43 (2003) 7-20] for solving inverse eigenvalue problems can be regarded equivalently as one of the inexact Newton-like methods considered in this paper. Abstract:The notions of Lipschitz conditions with L average are introduced to the study of convergence analysis of Gauss–Newton’s method for singular systems of equations. Unified convergence criteria ensuring the convergence of Gauss–Newton’s method for one kind of singular systems of equations with constant rank derivatives are established and unified estimates of radii of convergence balls are also obtained. Applications to some special cases such as the Kantorovich type conditions, γ-conditions and the Smale point estimate theory are provided and some important known results are extended and/or improved.
