Abstract:The convergence of the King-Werner method for finding zeros of nonlinear operators is analyzed. Under the hypothesis that the derivative of f satisfies the radius Lipschitz condition with L-average, the convergence criterion and the Convergence ball for the King-Werner method are given. Applying the results to some particular functions L(u), we get the convergence theorems in [7] and [1] as well as some new results.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish results fully addressing two open problems proposed recently by I. Ivanov, see Nonlinear Analysis 69 (2008) 4012-4024, with respect to the convergence of the accelerated Riccati iteration method for solving the continuous coupled algebraic Riccati equation, or CCARE for short. These results confirm several desirable features of that method, including the monotonicity and boundedness of the sequences it produces, its capability of determining whether the CCARE has a solution, the extremal solutions it computes under certain circumstances, and its faster convergence than the regular Riccati iteration method.

Abstract:The famous Newton-Kantorovich hypothesis has been used for a long time as a sufficient condition for the convergence of Newton's method to a solution of an equation. Here we present a ''Kantorovich type'' convergence analysis for the Gauss-Newton's method which improves the result in [W.M. Hauszler, A Kantorovich-type convergence analysis for the Gauss-Newton-method, Numer. Math. 48 (1986) 119-125.] and extends the main theorem in [I.K. Argyros, On the Newton-Kantorovich hypothesis for solving equations, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 169 (2004) 315-332]. Furthermore, the radius of convergence ball is also obtained.

Abstract:Consider the following variational inclusion problem: where f is differentiable in a neighbourhood of a solution and g is differentiable at , and F is a set-valued mapping, and the method introduced in Jean-Alexis and Pietrus [C. Jean-Alexis and A. Pietrus, On the convergence of some methods for variational inclusions, Rev. R. Acad. Cien. serie A. Mat. 102(2) (2008), pp. 355–361] for solving this problem: where ∇f(x) denotes the Fréchet derivative of f at x and [x, y; g] the first-order divided difference of g on the points x and y. Local converge analysis are provided for the method under the weaker conditions than Jean-Alexis and Pietrus (2008). Moreover, if ∇f and the first-order divided difference of g are p-Hölder continuous at a solution, then we show that this method converges superlinearly. In particular, our results extend the corresponding ones Jean-Alexis and Pietrus (2008), and fix a gap in the proof in (Jean-Alexis and Pietrus (2008), Theorem 1).

Abstract:In this paper, the estimate of the radius of the convergence ball of the modified Halley’s method for finding multiple zeros of nonlinear equations is provided under the hypotheses that the derivative f ( m + 1) of function f is Hölder continuous, and f ( m + 1) is bounded. The uniqueness ball of solution is also established. Finally, some examples are provided to show applications of our theorem.

Abstract:With the classical assumptions on f, a convergence criterion of Newton's method (independent of affine connections) to find zeros of a mapping f from a Lie group to its Lie algebra is established, and estimates of the convergence domains of Newton's method are obtained, which improve the corresponding results in Owren & Welfert (2000, BIT Numer. Math., 40, 121-145) and Wang & Li (2006, J. Zhejiang Univ. Sci. A, 8, 978-986). Applications to optimization are provided and the results due to Mahony (1996, Linear Algebra Appl., 248, 67-89) are extended and improved accordingly.

Abstract:We Study the convergence properties for some inexact Newton-like methods including the inexact Newton methods for solving nonlinear operator equations on Banach spaces. A new type of residual control is presented. Under the assumption that the derivative of the operator satisfies the Holder condition, the radius of convergence ball of the inexact Newton-like methods with the new type of residual control is estimated, and a linear and/or superlinear convergence property is proved, which extends the corresponding result of [B. Morini, Convergence behaviour of inexact Newton methods, Math. Comput. 68 (1999) 1605-1613]. As an application, we show that the inexact Newton-like method presented in [R.H. Chan, H.L. Chang, S.F. Xu, The inexact Newton-like method for inverse eigenvalue problem, BIT Numer. Math. 43 (2003) 7-20] for solving inverse eigenvalue problems can be regarded equivalently as one of the inexact Newton-like methods considered in this paper.
