Abstract:The theory of neutrino oscillations explains changes in neutrino flavor, count rates, and spectra from solar, atmospheric, accelerator, and reactor neutrinos. These oscillations are characterized by three mixing angles and two mass-squared differences. The solar mixing angle, θ12, and the atmospheric mixing angle, θ23, have been well measured, but until recently the neutrino mixing angle θ13 was not well known. The Daya Bay experiment, located northeast of Hong Kong at the Guangdong Nuclear Power Complex in China, has made a precise measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using six functionally-identical gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator-based detectors at three sites with distances between 364 and 1900 meters from six reactor cores. This proceeding describes the Daya Bay updated result, using 127 days of good run time collected between December 24, 2011 and May 11, 2012. For the far site, the ratio of the observed number of events to the expected number of events assuming no neutrino oscillation is 0.944±0.007(stat)±0.003(syst). A fit for θ13 in the three-neutrino framework yields sin22θ13=0.089±0.010(stat)±0.005(syst).

Abstract:Muon-neutrino and -antineutrino scattering off electrons was detected in a 19-ton Al spark chamber, exposed to the wide-band $\ensuremath{\nu}$ ($\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$) beam from the CERN proton synchrotron. The background was determined experimentally. 11 (10) genuine ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}}$ (${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}}$) $e$ scattering events were found. The respective cross sections are $(1.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}42}({E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}/\mathrm{GeV})$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ and $(2.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}42}({E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}/\mathrm{GeV})$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$. The analysis excludes a pure $V\ensuremath{-}A$ interaction, and makes a pure $V$ or $A$ theory improbable. The data agree well with the Salam-Weinberg model and ${{sin}^{2}\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{W}}=0.35\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08$.
Measurement of the muon anomaly to high and even higher precision

Abstract:Our recent series of measurements at Brookhaven National Laboratory determined the muon anomalous magnetic moment \amu to a precision of 0.5 ppm. The final result--representing the average of five running periods using both positive and negative muons--is $\amu ^\pm = 11 659 208(6) \times 10^{-10}$. It lies 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation, which is based on updates given at this Workshop. Importantly, only the $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation and new KLOE radiative return data are used for the hadronic vacuum polarization input. Because the systematic limit has not been reached in the experiment, a new effort has been proposed and approved with the highest scientific priority at Brookhaven. The goal is an experimental uncertainty of 0.2 ppm, a 2.5-fold reduction in the overall experimental uncertainty. To do so will require a suite of upgrades and several qualitative changes in the philosophy of how the measurement is carried out. I discuss the old and new experiments with a particular emphasis on the technical matters that require change for the future.

Self-consistent calculation of the reactor antineutrino spectra including forbidden transitions

Abstract:With the goal of determining the $\theta_{13}$ neutrino oscillation mixing angle, the measurements of reactor antineutrino fluxes at the Double Chooz, RENO and Daya Bay experimental facilities have uncovered a systematic discrepancy between the number of observed events and theoretical expectations. In the \emph{ab initio} approach, the total reactor antineutrino spectrum is a weighted sum of spectra resulting from all $\beta$ branches of all fission products in the reactor core. At all three facilities a systematic deviation of the number of observed events from the number of predicted events was noticed, i.e., approximately 6\% of the predicted neutrinos were not observed. This discrepancy was named the reactor neutrino anomaly. In theoretical studies it is assumed that all the decays are allowed in shape, but a quarter of all transitions are actually forbidden and may have a complex energy dependence that will affect the total reactor antineutrino spectrum. In order to estimate the effect of forbidden transitions, we perform a fully self-consistent calculation of spectra from all contributing transitions and compare the results with a purely allowed approximation.

Abstract:Accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments seek to measure the relative number of electron and muon neutrinos and antineutrinos at different $L/E$ values. However high statistics studies of neutrino interactions are almost exclusively measured using muon neutrinos and antineutrinos since the dominant flavor of neutrinos produced by accelerator based beams are of the muon type. This work reports new measurements of electron neutrino and antineutrino interactions in hydrocarbon, obtained by strongly suppressing backgrounds initiated by muon flavor neutrinos and antineutrinos. Double differential cross sections as a function of visible energy transfer, $E_\text{avail}$, and transverse momentum transfer, $p_T$, or three momentum transfer, $q_3$ are presented.

Abstract:Abstract Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations, we know that neutrinos have non-zero mass. However, the absolute neutrino-mass scale remains unknown. Here we report the upper limits on effective electron anti-neutrino mass, m ν , from the second physics run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment. In this experiment, m ν is probed via a high-precision measurement of the tritium β -decay spectrum close to its endpoint. This method is independent of any cosmological model and does not rely on assumptions whether the neutrino is a Dirac or Majorana particle. By increasing the source activity and reducing the background with respect to the first physics campaign, we reached a sensitivity on m ν of 0.7 eV c –2 at a 90% confidence level (CL). The best fit to the spectral data yields $${{\mbox{}}}{m}_{\nu }^{2}{{\mbox{}}}$$ m ν 2 = (0.26 ± 0.34) eV 2 c –4 , resulting in an upper limit of m ν < 0.9 eV c –2 at 90% CL. By combining this result with the first neutrino-mass campaign, we find an upper limit of m ν < 0.8 eV c –2 at 90% CL.

Abstract:The observation of neutrino oscillations is clear evidence for physics beyond the standard model. To make precise measurements of this phenomenon, neutrino oscillation experiments, including MiniBooNE, require an accurate description of neutrino charged current quasielastic (CCQE) cross sections to predict signal samples. Using a high-statistics sample of nu(mu) CCQE events, MiniBooNE finds that a simple Fermi gas model, with appropriate adjustments, accurately characterizes the CCQE events observed in a carbon-based detector. The extracted parameters include an effective axial mass, M-A(eff)=1.23 +/- 0.20 GeV, that describes the four-momentum dependence of the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon, and a Pauli-suppression parameter, kappa=1.019 +/- 0.011. Such a modified Fermi gas model may also be used by future accelerator-based experiments measuring neutrino oscillations on nuclear targets.

Abstract:Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

Abstract:In this contribution we review the status and perspectives of direct neutrino mass experiments. These experiments investigate the kinematics of $\beta$-decays of specific isotopes ($^3$H, $^{187}$Re, $^{163}$Ho) to derive model-independent information on the averaged electron (anti-) neutrino mass, which is formed by the incoherent sum of the neutrino mass eigenstates contributing to the electron neutrino. We first review the kinematics of $\beta$-decay and the determination of the neutrino mass, before giving a brief overview of past neutrino mass measurements (SN1987a-ToF studies, Mainz and Troitsk experiments for $^3$H, cryo-bolometers for $^{187}$Re). We then describe the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment which is currently under construction at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The large-scale setup will use the MAC-E-Filter principle pioneered earlier to push the sensitivity down to a value of 200 meV(90% C.L.). KATRIN faces many technological challenges that have to be resolved with regard to source intensity and stability, as well as precision energy analysis and low background rate close to the kinematic endpoint of tritium $\beta$-decay at 18.6 keV. We then review new experimental approaches such as the MARE, ECHO and Project8 experiments, which offer the promise to perform an independent measurement of the neutrino mass in the sub-eV region. This variety of methods and the novel technologies developed in all present and future experiments demonstrate the great potential of direct neutrino mass experiments in providing vital information on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos.

Antineutrino Opacity in Neutron Stars in the Models Constrained by Recent Terrestrial Experiments and Astrophysical Observations

Abstract:In the present paper, I have investigated a neutral current (NC) antineutrinos scattering with neutron star (NS) matter constituents at zero temperature. The modeling of the standard matters in NS is constructed in the framework of both extended relativistic mean-field (E-RMF) and nonrelativistic Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU energy density functional (KIDS-EDF) models. In the E-RMF model, I use a new parameter of G3(M), which was constrained by the recent PREX II experiment measurement of neutron distribution of $^{208}\rm{Pb}$, while the KIDS-EDF models are constrained by terrestrial experiments, gravitational-wave signals, and astrophysical observations. Using both realistic and well-constrained matter models, I then calculate the antineutrino differential cross-section (ADCS) and antineutrino mean free path (AMFP) of the antineutrinos-NS matter constituents interaction using a linear response theory. It is found that the AMFP for the KIDS0 and KIDSA models are smaller in comparison to the SLy4 model and the E-RMF model with the G3(M) parameter. The AMFP result of the Skyrme model with the SLy4 parameter set is found to have an almost similar prediction to that of the E-RMF model with the G3(M) parameter. Contributions of each nucleon to total AMFP are also presented for the G3(M) model.

Abstract:The ILL experiment, one of the "reactor anomaly" experiments, is re-examined. ILL's baseline of 8.78 m is the shortest of the short baseline experiments, and it is the experiment that finds the largest fraction of the electron anti-neutrinos disappearing -- over 20%. Previous analyses, if they do not ignore the ILL experiment, use functional forms for chisquare which are either totally new and unjustified, are the magnitude chi-square (also termed a "rate analysis"), or utilize a spectral form for chi-square which double counts the systematic error. We do an analysis which utilizes the standard, conventional form for chi-square as well as a derived form for a spectral chi-square. Results for the ILL, Huber, and Daya Bay fluxes are given. We find that the implications of the ILL experiment in providing evidence for a sterile, fourth neutrino are significantly enhanced. Moreover, we find that the ILL experiment provides a set of choices for specific values of the mass squared difference. The value of the mass square difference for the deepest minimum and its statistical significance, using the flux independent spectral chi-square and the Huber or Daya Bay flux are 0.92 eV$^2$ and 2.9 $\sigma$; for the conventional chi-square and the Daya Bay flux are 0.95 eV$^2$ and 3.0 $\sigma$; and for the conventional chi-square and Huber flux are 0.90 eV$^2$ and 3.3 $\sigma$. These probabilities are significantly larger than the 1.8 $\sigma$ found for the ILL experiment using a rate analysis.

Abstract:The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron's electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties. We present results from a novel measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using quasielastic scattering from the mirror nuclei H3 and He3 , where the nuclear effects are larger than for deuterium but expected to largely cancel in the cross-section ratios. We extracted values of the neutron magnetic form factor for low-to-modest momentum transfer, 0.6<q2<2.9 gev2 , where existing measurements give inconsistent results. Improving the accuracy of neutrino energy reconstruction in charged-current quasielastic scattering off nuclear targets

Abstract:We report the results of a theoretical study of quasielastic electron and neutrino interactions with carbon. Our approach takes into account the effects of final-state interactions between the struck nucleon and the residual nucleus, neglected in the impulse approximation, through a generalization of the spectral function formalism. The calculated electron-scattering cross sections turn out to be in very good agreement with the available data over a broad kinematical region. The impact of nuclear effects on the reconstruction of neutrino energy in charged-current quasielastic processes is also studied, and the results of our approach are compared to the predictions of the relativistic Fermi gas model, routinely employed in most Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, we discuss the limitations of the existing procedure for energy reconstruction and propose a new, improved, one. At energy ~600 MeV, we observe a sizable difference between neutrino and antineutrino scattering, important for the measurements of charge-parity symmetry violation. Our analysis suggests that a reliable determination of neutrino energy can only be obtained from models validated by a systematic comparison to the available electron-scattering data.

Abstract:The long standing negative (mass){sup 2} anomaly encountered in attempts to measure the mass of the electron neutrino may be an indication of physics beyond the standard model. It is demonstrated that an additional charged current interaction which is not of V--A form, and which is at least an order of magnitude weaker than the standard model charged current interaction, will produce a spectrum, which, if fitted by the standard model, may give a negative value for m{sub {nu}}{sup 2}. A possible physical explanation of the time dependent effects seen by the Troitsk experiment is also provided.
